Jacques Fantini, Nouara Yahi
R2,437 Discovery Miles 24 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lipids are the most abundant organic compounds found in the brain, accounting for up to 50% of its dry weight. The brain lipidome includes several thousands of distinct biochemical structures whose expression may greatly vary according to age, gender, brain region, cell type, as well as subcellular localization. In synaptic membranes, brain lipids specifically interact with neurotransmitter receptors and control their activity. Moreover, brain lipids play a key role in the generation and neurotoxicity of amyloidogenic proteins involved in the pathophysiology of neurological diseases. The aim of this book is to provide for the first time a comprehensive overview of brain lipid structures, and to explain the roles of these lipids in synaptic function, and in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob s and Parkinson s. To conclude the book, the authors present new ideas that can drive innovative therapeutic strategies based on the knowledge of the role of lipids in brain disorders.
*Written to provide a "hands-on" approach for readers
*Biochemical structures explained with molecular models, and molecular mechanisms explained with simple drawings
*Step-by-step guide to memorize and draw lipid structures

Freezing Fertility - Oocyte Cryopreservation and the Gender Politics of Aging (Hardcover): Lucy Van de Wiel Freezing Fertility - Oocyte Cryopreservation and the Gender Politics of Aging (Hardcover)
Lucy Van de Wiel
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Welcomed as liberation and dismissed as exploitation, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has rapidly become one of the most widely-discussed and influential new reproductive technologies of this century. In Freezing Fertility, Lucy van de Wiel takes us inside the world of fertility preservation—with its egg freezing parties, contested age limits, proactive anticipations and equity investments—and shows how the popularization of egg freezing has profound consequences for the way in which female fertility and reproductive aging are understood, commercialized and politicized. Beyond an individual reproductive choice for people who may want to have children later in life, Freezing Fertility explores how the rise of egg freezing also reveals broader cultural, political and economic negotiations about reproductive politics, gender inequities, age normativities and the financialization of healthcare. Van de Wiel investigates these issues by analyzing a wide range of sources—varying from sparkly online platforms to heart-breaking court cases and intimate autobiographical accounts—that are emblematic of each stage of the egg freezing procedure. By following the egg’s journey, Freezing Fertility examines how contemporary egg freezing practices both reflect broader social, regulatory and economic power asymmetries and repoliticize fertility and aging in ways that affect the public at large. In doing so, the book explores how the possibility of egg freezing shifts our relation to the beginning and end of life.

The Protective Arm of the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) - Functional Aspects and Therapeutic Implications (Paperback): Thomas... The Protective Arm of the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) - Functional Aspects and Therapeutic Implications (Paperback)
Thomas Unger, U. Muscha Steckelings, Robson Augusto Souza Dos Santos
R2,529 Discovery Miles 25 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Protective Arm of the RAS: Functional Aspects and Therapeutic Implications" is the first comprehensive publication to signal the protective role of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) providing readers with early insight into a system which will become of major medical importance. It is extensively demonstrated that the RAS, when over activated, represents a disease-promoting and disease-sustaining system. But recently the protective role of the RAS has emerged supported by a large number of experimental studies. In fact, specific components of the RAS, namely angiotensin AT2 receptors (AT2R), the angiotensin (1 7) peptide with its receptor Mas, and the enzyme ACE 2 exert significant beneficial actions by counter-balancing the well-known harmful side of the RAS.
Provides a complete understanding of the protective, beneficial role of the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS).Combines the knowledge of editors who pioneered research on protective renin angiotensin system including Dr. Robson Santos who discovered angiotensins-(1-7) and its receptor Mas; and Dr. U. Muscha Steckelings and Dr. Thomas Unger who made contributions to AT2 receptor research and were the first to use a novel specific AT2-antagonist in preclinical studies.Shows the protective RAS axes are able to ameliorate the course of several cardiovascular, renal and neurological diseases.

Allosteric Modulation of G Protein-Coupled Receptors (Paperback): Robert Laprairie Allosteric Modulation of G Protein-Coupled Receptors (Paperback)
Robert Laprairie
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Allosteric Modulation of G Protein-Coupled Receptors reviews fundamental information on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and allosteric modulation, presenting original research in the area and collectively providing a comprehensive description of key issues in GPCR allosteric modulation. The book provides background on core concepts of molecular pharmacology while also introducing the most important advances and studies in the area. It also discusses key methodologies. This is an essential book for researchers and advanced students engaged in pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceutical sciences training and research. Many of the GPCR-targeted drugs released in the past decade have specifically worked via allosteric mechanisms. Unlike direct orthosteric-acting compounds that occupy a similar receptor site to that of endogenous ligands, allosteric modulators alter GPCR-dependent signaling at a site apart from the endogenous ligand. Recent methodological and analytical advances have greatly improved our ability to understand the signaling mechanisms of GPCRs. We now know that allostery is a common regulatory mechanism for all GPCRs and not - as we once believed - unique to a few receptor subfamilies.

Recent Advances in Psychology and Aging, Volume 15 (Hardcover): P. Costa, I. C. Siegler Recent Advances in Psychology and Aging, Volume 15 (Hardcover)
P. Costa, I. C. Siegler
R3,496 Discovery Miles 34 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Recent Events in the Psychology of Aging" documents the successful integration of aging into the mainstream of psychology. Leading psychologists present overviews of the key issues and research findings on mainstream topics. These include cognitive neuroscience, visual attention, learning, memory and cognition, as well as personality and happiness. The intersection of aging content with mainstream psychology is also prominent in the areas of emotions, personality, and social psychology as seen in the chapters on subjective well-being, emotional development, self-esteem and personality trajectories.
The seven chapters of this book offer information on such topics as: the seven sins of memory, categorizing the common breakdowns of memory in everyday life and the special breakdown of sins that increase with aging; problems with attention and learning; and offers answers to questions such as do emotions get blunted with age; do older people focus more on positive feelings; and the age old question of whether older people are happier than younger people is given in the chapter on the evolving concept of subjective well-being and the multifaceted nature of happiness. Questions about what occurs to one's self-esteem and personality are also masterfully discussed and the answers may be surprising. The concluding seventh chapter provides a cultural lens on the biopsychosocial study of aging.

Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke (Hardcover): Sudha Seshadri, Stephanie Debette Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke (Hardcover)
Sudha Seshadri, Stephanie Debette
R2,970 Discovery Miles 29 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke address the relationship of a wide variety of vascular risk factors in the spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases. An international group of professionals the forefront of research and education, provide their expertise about environmental and genetic determinants for cerebrovascular disease and stroke. The authors aim to provide information on developments of genetic, environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors of various subtypes of stroke, and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular disease. One in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women after the age of 40, will develop a stroke in their lifetime. The burden of cerebrovascular disease extends far beyond that of acute clinical events such as stroke, with "covert " vascular injury on brain MRI being highly prevalent in older community-dwelling persons. Therefore, improving our understanding of the risk factors for stroke and cerebrovascular disease is of paramount importance for improving prevention strategies. Secular trends in stroke epidemiology, risk factors, and intermediate markers (including carotid ultrasound, brain MRI and circulating biomarkers) are presented. Cutting edge information on genetic, environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors of various subtypes of stroke and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular diseases are displayed. This important book is an essential reference to physicians interested in more effective primary prevention of stroke.

Not Trying - Infertility, Childlessness, and Ambivalence (Hardcover): Kristin J. Wilson Not Trying - Infertility, Childlessness, and Ambivalence (Hardcover)
Kristin J. Wilson
R2,146 Discovery Miles 21 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

One message that comes along with ever-improving fertility treatments and increasing acceptance of single motherhood, older first-time mothers, and same-sex partnerships, is that almost any woman can and should become a mother. The media and many studies focus on infertile and involuntarily childless women who are seeking treatment. They characterize this group as anxious and willing to try anything, even elaborate and financially ruinous high-tech interventions, to achieve a successful pregnancy.

But the majority of women who struggle with fertility avoid treatment. The women whose interviews appear in "Not Trying" belong to this majority. Their attitudes vary and may change as their life circumstances evolve. Some support the prevailing cultural narrative that women are meant to be mothers and refuse to see themselves as childfree by choice. Most of these women, who come from a wider range of social backgrounds than most researchers have studied, experience deep ambivalence about motherhood and non-motherhood, never actually choosing either path. They prefer to let life unfold, an attitude that seems to reduce anxiety about not conforming to social expectations.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Laurence A. Cole Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Laurence A. Cole
R2,710 Discovery Miles 27 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced during pregnancy by the embryo. It promotes progesterone production by corpus luteal cells. It also functions in pregnancy to promote angiogenesis in uterine vasculature, it immuno-blands the invading placental tissue so it is not rejected by the maternal uterine tissues, promotes the growth of the uterus in line with the growth of the fetus, promotes the differentiation of growing cytotrophoblast cells, promotes the quiescence of contractions in the uterine myometrium during the course of pregnancy, and also has function in growth and development of fetal organs. The first edition described the detailed biology, clinical chemistry, and clinical perspectives of hCG and associated molecules, and examines hCG, hyperglycosylated hCG and hCG free ss-subunit, 3 separate and independent molecules with totally sovereign physiological functions. The second edition will include coverage of the many new discoveries that have been made in the last five years: hCG analogues may be the actual driving signal of all human cancers. The editor estimates that 40% of the out of date material will be excluded and replaced with 40% of the exciting new findings. The book will also have a much clearer pregnancy and cancer focus.
