The purpose of this atlas is to illustrate how to achieve reliable diagnoses when confronted by the different abnormalities, or "disease patterns," that may be visualized on CT scans of the chest. The task of pattern recognition has been greatly facilitated by the advent of multidetector CT (MDCT), and the focus of the book is very much on the role of state-of-the-art MDCT. A wide range of disease patterns and distributions are covered, with emphasis on the typical imaging characteristics of the various focal and diffuse lung diseases. In addition, clinical information relevant to differential diagnosis is provided and the underlying gross and microscopic pathology is depicted, permitting CT-pathology correlation. The entire information relevant to each disease pattern is also tabulated for ease of reference. This book will be an invaluable handy tool that will enable the reader to quickly and easily reach a diagnosis appropriate to the pattern of lung abnormality identified on CT scans.

An Introduction to Radiobiology 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): A.H.W. Nias An Introduction to Radiobiology 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
A.H.W. Nias
R3,486 Discovery Miles 34 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new edition of A.H.W. Nias’ successful book provides an updated and revised introduction to quantitative radiobiology, particularly, to those aspects of the subject which have a practical application. Radiation is used to cure cancer but can also cause it. Radiation is also used in medical diagnosis and in nuclear power stations. In these areas, where questions of benefit and detriment arise, the biological effects of the radiation can now be predicted. There are few aspects of life where risk estimates are so firmly founded on quantitative data. This is not only because of the precision with which radiation dose can be measured but also because of the large body of radiobiological observations which have been made since X-rays were discovered. Written by a scientist with many years experience in the field, An Introduction to Radiobiology will appeal to a wide variety of readers who need to understand the mechanisms by which ionizing radiation causes cellular damage. It will be of interest to technologists in radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiography, cancer research students and technicians, medical physicists, trainee radiotherapists and nuclear medicine specialists.

Reviews of the First Edition: "In summary, this is an excellent general text that should fill an important gap in many teaching needs, especially those where the major focus is on the biological effects of radiation on humans." Journal of the National Cancer Institute "This is undoubtedly one of the better introductions to the subject which I have read, and I would certainly recommend it not only to beginners but also to mature students of the subject." The British Journal of Radiology

The Failed Rotator Cuff - Diagnosis and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Felix H. Savoie III, Emilio Calvo, Augustus D.... The Failed Rotator Cuff - Diagnosis and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Felix H. Savoie III, Emilio Calvo, Augustus D. Mazzocca
R5,031 Discovery Miles 50 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rotator cuff surgery is currently the most common surgical procedure involving the shoulder. Unfortunately despite major technical advances, there is still a significant rate of failure of primary rotator cuff repair, ranging from 10% to 40%. This book describes the diagnosis, classification, assessment, and management of failed rotator cuff repairs. It also explores the etiology of the failed repairs, presents a series of treatment options, and discusses the complications. In a multidisciplinary format it addresses both how to prevent failure and how to diagnose and manage the failed rotator cuff, including imaging, laboratory testing, nutrition, surgery and rehabilitation. This comprehensive book, published in collaboration with ISAKOS, appeals to all stakeholders in orthopedic medicine and surgery.

Charge Transfer Photochemistry of Coordination Compounds (Hardcover): O. Horvath Charge Transfer Photochemistry of Coordination Compounds (Hardcover)
O. Horvath
R10,284 Discovery Miles 102 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book summarizes the results of studies on charge transfer photochemistry of metal complexes of the past few years. The material covered is organized in such a manner that each chapter discusses the photoredox properties of complexes of a series of metals which belong to the same column of the periodic table, including both transition metals and main group metals (for those that show photoactivity). Foremostly, the book covers photoinduced processes in which the primary step is a charge transfer reaction of the excited metal complex. It is concerned primarily with in-depth descriptions and discussions of the photochemistry of complexes themselves, with less emphasis on theoretical discussions.
This book is aimed at professional photochemical researchers as well as students and chemists who are interested in organometallic and inorganic metal complexes and plan to become familiar with their charge transfer photochemistry.

Marcelo F. di Carli, Maurizio Dondi, Raffaele Giubbini, Diana Paez
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book presents a wide portfolio of examples of positron emission tomography coupled with computer tomography (PET/CT) studies in various cardiac conditions in order to provide a rationale for the implementation of this technology in an array of clinical conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are a major contributor to premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are particularly affected by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with more than 75% of all CVDs deaths occurring in these countries. For this reason, target 3.4 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda aims at a 30% reduction in premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which include CVDs, by 2030. Among CVDs, ischemic heart disease (IHD) plays an important role and, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), it was responsible for 15.96% of global deaths in 2017. Between 2000 and 2017, the number of IHD deaths worldwide increased by 0.26% per year. Several imaging tools help to non-invasively diagnose, stratify risk and guide management in cardiac disease. They include nuclear cardiology techniques, using either SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) or PET/CT. While myocardial imaging with SPECT has been fully embraced by the cardiology community and is widely available worldwide, PET/CT introduction has been slower, due not only to its higher costs, but also to the limited availability of PET/VCT scanners, mostly utilized for oncological applications. This book is an invaluable tool for nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists and radiologists.

It was instigated following a recommendation in ICRP Publication 103 (2007), and it provides updated estimates of 'practical' threshold doses for tissue injury defined at the level of 1% incidence. Estimates are given for morbidity and mortality endpoints in all organ systems following acute, fractionated, or chronic exposure. The organ systems comprise the haematopoietic, immune, reproductive, circulatory, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and nervous systems; the digestive and urinary tracts; the skin; and the eye.
