The original publication of The Tourist-Historic City in 1990
reflected the growing importance of heritage to cities, and cities
to the creation and marketing of heritage products, not least
within tourism. In response to the continuing rapid growth of
interest in this field, the concepts and models it introduced have
subsequently been applied by urban planners and tourism managers in
many different contexts throughout the world. This extensively
rewritten and restructured account of the tourist-historic city
takes into consideration the importance of these applications in
reformulating and modifying theoretical concepts, developing
practical methods of analysis and policy formulation, as well as
extending the geographical scope worldwide. Changes in the last
decade include not only the growing importance of heritage and
associated heritage industries serving many social, political and
economic users, but also the expanding role of cultural products
within tourism. In addition, the opening up of central and eastern
Europe and the export of heritage ideas from western cities to a
wider world have emphasised the tension between a globalisation and
a localisation of heritage and its expression in the
tourist-historic city.
This book presents several perspectives on the COVID-19 crisis as it impacted the United States, focusing on policies, practices, and patterns. It considers the relationship between government policies and neo-liberalism, (anti)federalism, economies of scale, and material culture. The COVID-19 crisis became the primary current event in the United States in March 2020 and continued for several years. In the early days of the crisis, the United States lacked a cohesive, comprehensive approach to combating its spread. As a result, the pandemic was experienced differently in different parts of the United States and at different scales. The chapters in this volume include both quantitative and qualitative explorations of the pandemic as it occurred in the United States. Collectively, they help the reader to better understand this geographically salient issue and provide lessons to learn from so as to improve upon responses to crises in the future. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of Geography, Sociology, Political Science, and Economics with an interest in United States and the socio-political effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Urbanization affects wetlands in direct and indirect ways. Over the past several decades it has become increasingly apparent that unmanaged runoff is the primary threat to the country's watershed resources.

This book discusses the protection, planning, and design of sustainable urban water environments. Against the backdrop of environmental changes, it addresses issues of water resource protection and sustainable development in China and Germany at different stages of urbanization, as well as relevant strategies and lessons learned. It focuses on three topics: balance between water environment protection and utilization in the urbanization process; sustainable use of water resources in the urbanization process; and water-related planning and design strategies in urbanization and local cultural development processes. Cities affect every person's life, yet across the traditional
divides of class, age, gender and political affiliation, armies of
people are united in their dislike of the transformations that
cities have undergone in recent times. The physical form of the
urban environment is not a designer add-on to 'real' social issues;
it is a central aspect of the social world. Yet in many people's
experience, the cumulative impacts of recent urban development have
created widely un-loved urban places. To work towards better-loved
urban environments, we need to understand how current problems have
arisen and identify practical action to address them.
This volume analyzes sustainability-related innovations in the building sector and discusses how regional contexts articulate transition trajectories toward green building. It presents 'biographies' of drivers and processes of green building innovation in four case studies: Brisbane (AUS), Freiburg (GER), Luxembourg (LU), and Vancouver (CA). Two of them are relatively well known for their initiatives to mitigate climate change - particularly in the building sector, whereas the other two have only recently become more active in promoting green building. The volume places emphasis on development paths, learning processes, and innovations. The focus of the case studies is not restricted to purely technological aspects but also integrates regulatory, procedural, institutional, and other processes and routines and their influence on the variations of the building sector. The diversity of the selected case studies offers the reader the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of how sustainability developments have unfolded in different city regions. The catalogues identify crucial innovations (technological, regulatory, etc.) and explain the factors and circumstances that have led to their success and broader acceptance in Freiburg, Vancouver, Luxembourg, and Brisbane. The book represents the outcome of the GreenRegio project, which stands for 'Green building in regional strategies for sustainability: multi-actor governance and innovative building technologies in Europe, Australia, and Canada.' Our societies need to solve difficult issues to attain sustainability. The main challenges include, among others, global warming, demographic change, an energy crisis, and loss of biodiversity. In tackling these issues, a holistic understanding of our living space is important. The field of landscape planning and design is at the core the holistic concept and it makes several contributions to achieving sustainability. First, landscape planning and design connects different spatial scales: from site to region to the planet. Second, it focuses on close interrelationships between human activities and nature. Third, it is concerned with people's values toward their surroundings.
