It has been claimed that the natural sciences have abstracted for themselves a 'material world' set apart from human concerns, and social sciences, in their turn, constructed 'a world of actors devoid of things'. While a subject such as archaeology, by its very nature, takes objects into account, other disciplines, such as psychology, emphasize internal mental structures and other non-material issues. This book brings together a team of contributors from across the social sciences who have been taking 'things' more seriously to examine how people relate to objects. The contributors focus on every day objects and how these objects enter into our activities over the course of time. Using a combination of different theoretical approaches, including actor network theory, ecological psychology, cognitive linguistics and science and technology studies, the book argues against the standard notion of objects and their properties as inert and meaningless and argues for the need to understand the relations between people and objects in terms of process and change.

Knowledge Cities are cities that possess an economy driven by high
value-added exports created through research, technology, and
brainpower. In other words, these are cities in which both the
private and the public sectors value knowledge, nurture knowledge,
spend money on supporting knowledge dissemination and discovery (ie
learning and innovation) and harness knowledge to create products
and services that add value and create wealth. Currently there are
65 urban development programs worldwide formally designated as
"knowledge cities." Knowledge-based cities fall under a new area of
academic research entitled Knowledge-Based Development, which
brings together research in urban development and urban studies and
planning with knowledge management and intellectual capital.
Using mixed and augmented reality in communities is an emerging media practice that is reshaping how we interact with our cities and neighbors. From the politics of city hall to crosswalks and playgrounds, mixed and augmented reality will offer a diverse range of new ways to interact with our communities. People either love new urbanism or hate it. Some find compact new
neighborhoods of brownstone row houses, elegant Victorian mansions,
or country cottages delightful: places that celebrate the city and
its history, and offer hope for a sustainable future. Others see
these 'urban villages' as up-graded suburbs mired in the aesthetics
of another time and place: cloyingly nostalgic anachronisms for
affluent elites. This book examines new urban approaches both in
theory and practice. Taking a critical look at how new urbanism
lives up to its theory in its practice, it asks whether new urban
approaches offer a viable path to the good community.
Concentrating on the planning and design of cities, the three

The focus of most capacity building programs is poor and disadvantaged communities. However, the appropriateness of capacity building for these groups, whether located in "developing" or "developed" countries, is always presented as self-evident. In much of the discussion of "how to" build capacity, critical questions regarding the determination of whose capacities are to be built, the methods by which capacity will be built and the consequences for wider relationships of those whose capacity is being built (and presumably for those whose capacity is being left to be built at another time!) are not investigated. A deeper understanding of the meaning, practice and potential of capacity building is required. This book challenges capacity building by critically interrogating its central ideas and practices. But it also considers the ways in which capacity building itself can challenge disadvantage and inequality, by offering a self-determining way forward for communities.

This, the first book on Latinos in America from an urban planning/policy perspective, covers the last century, and includes a substantial historical overview the subject. This research was supported by Grant no. 14-24977P from the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic as part of the project "Contested Czech cities: Citizen participation in post-socialist urban restructuring. This book focuses on urban grassroots movements in post-socialist Czechia and their struggle against unprofessional and nondemocratic urban processes in their cities. It shows that in the context of neoliberal urban restructuring, weakly consolidated democracy, and corporate capture of the local state, urban activists often resort to entering electoral competition as the only efficient way of improving the situation in their cities. The book is based on four case studies from different Czech cities, narrating stories of activists struggling against a controversial flood protection project, the demolition of public buildings, an unhealthy land-use plan, arrogant development, and overpriced city halls. It offers valuable insight into the obstacles created by institutionalized forms of power abuse which urban activists must deal with and discusses the pro-democratic potential of urban grassroot movements' efforts to overcome their limited ability to influence political processes via standard means of civic engagement and protest activities.

This book tackles these questions by looking at the contested identities of areas facing industrial and agricultural change in Scotland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. The book draws on collaboration between local governments from these four countries in analyzing the changes that are happening in places, identities, and public engagement in the planning process, such as the emergence of new regional bodies which sidestep the nation state in their dealings with the EU. also altering relations between governments and voters, as welfare state paternalism and local representative democracy is overtaken by a new, fragmented politics of identity and lifestyle. These overall themes are introduced in the first three chapters and then explored in relation to specific examples in the second part of the book.
