Software Product Quality Control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013): Stefan Wagner Software Product Quality Control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013)
Stefan Wagner
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Quality is not a fixed or universal property of software; it depends on the context and goals of its stakeholders. Hence, when you want to develop a high-quality software system, the first step must be a clear and precise specification of quality. Yet even if you get it right and complete, you can be sure that it will become invalid over time. So the only solution is continuous quality control: the steady and explicit evaluation of a product's properties with respect to its updated quality goals. This book guides you in setting up and running continuous quality control in your environment. Starting with a general introduction on the notion of quality, it elaborates what the differences between process and product quality are and provides definitions for quality-related terms often used without the required level of precision. On this basis, the work then discusses quality models as the foundation of quality control, explaining how to plan desired product qualities and how to ensure they are delivered throughout the entire lifecycle. Next it presents the main concepts and techniques of continuous quality control, discussing the quality control loop and its main techniques such as reviews or testing. In addition to sample scenarios in all chapters, the book is rounded out by a dedicated chapter highlighting several applications of different subsets of the presented quality control techniques in an industrial setting. The book is primarily intended for practitioners working in software engineering or quality assurance, who will benefit by learning how to improve their current processes, how to plan for quality, and how to apply state-of-the-art quality control techniques. Students and lecturers in computer science and specializing in software engineering will also profit from this book, which they can use in practice-oriented courses on software quality, software maintenance and quality assurance.

Applied Nonparametric Statistics in Reliability (Paperback, 2011 ed.): M. Luz Gamiz, K. B. Kulasekera, Nikolaos Limnios, Bo... Applied Nonparametric Statistics in Reliability (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
M. Luz Gamiz, K. B. Kulasekera, Nikolaos Limnios, Bo Henry Lindqvist
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nonparametric statistics has probably become the leading methodology for researchers performing data analysis. It is nevertheless true that, whereas these methods have already proved highly effective in other applied areas of knowledge such as biostatistics or social sciences, nonparametric analyses in reliability currently form an interesting area of study that has not yet been fully explored. Applied Nonparametric Statistics in Reliability is focused on the use of modern statistical methods for the estimation of dependability measures of reliability systems that operate under different conditions. The scope of the book includes: smooth estimation of the reliability function and hazard rate of non-repairable systems; study of stochastic processes for modelling the time evolution of systems when imperfect repairs are performed; nonparametric analysis of discrete and continuous time semi-Markov processes; isotonic regression analysis of the structure function of a reliability system, and lifetime regression analysis. Besides the explanation of the mathematical background, several numerical computations or simulations are presented as illustrative examples. The corresponding computer-based methods have been implemented using R and MATLAB (R). A concrete modelling scheme is chosen for each practical situation and, in consequence, a nonparametric inference procedure is conducted. Applied Nonparametric Statistics in Reliability will serve the practical needs of scientists (statisticians and engineers) working on applied reliability subjects.

Simulator-based Human Factors Studies Across 25 Years - The History of the Halden Man-Machine Laboratory (Paperback, 2011 ed.):... Simulator-based Human Factors Studies Across 25 Years - The History of the Halden Man-Machine Laboratory (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Ann Britt Skjerve, Andreas Bye
R5,167 Discovery Miles 51 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Halden Man-Machine Laboratory (HAMMLAB) has been at the heart of human factors research at the OECD Halden Reactor Project (HRP). The HRP is sponsored by a group of national organizations, representing nuclear power plant regulators, utilities, and research institutions. The HRP is hosted by the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) in Halden, Norway. HAMMLAB comprises three full-scale nuclear power plant control room research simulators. The simulator studies performed in HAMMLAB have traditionally been experimental in nature. In a simulator it is possible to study events as they unfold in real time, in a highly realistic operational environment under partially controlled conditions. This means that a wide range of human factors issues, which would be impossible or highly impracticable to study in real-life settings, can thus be addressed in HAMMLAB. Simulator-based Human Factors Studies Across 25 Years celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of HAMMLAB by reviewing the human factors studies performed in HAMMLAB across this time-span. A range of human factors issues have been addressed, including: * human-system interfaces; * alarm systems; * computerized procedures; * human-automation interaction; * staffing, teamwork and human reliability. The aim of HAMMLAB studies has always been the same: to generate knowledge for solving current and future challenges in nuclear power plant operation to contribute to safety. The outcomes of HAMMLAB studies have been used to support design and assessment of nuclear power plant control rooms.

ESD - The Scourge of Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998): Sten Hellstroem ESD - The Scourge of Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
Sten Hellstroem
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book on electrostatic discharge phenomena is essentially a translation and update ofa Swedish edition from 1992. The book is intended for people working with electronic circuits and equipments, in application and development. All personnel should be aware of the ESD-hazards, especially those responsible for quality. ESD-prevention is a part of TQM (Total Quality Management). The book is also usable for courses on the subject. Background It was soon realised that the MOS-circuits (MOS=Metal Oxide Semiconductor), which appeared in the beginning of the 1960-ties were sensitive to electrostatic discharges. But a severe accident accelerated the search for materials that do not generate electric charges. In April 1964 three people were working inside a satellite at Cape Kennedy Space Center. They suddenly screamed "we are burning". They died. The satellite incapsulation was covered with untreated plastics to protect against dust. When the plastics was pulled off both this and the metal incapsulating got charged. A discharge from the metal ignited inflammable parts of the satellite. Eleven more people were injured and the cost of the accident amounted to about 55 billions USD.

Assessment of Power System Reliability - Methods and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Marko Cepin Assessment of Power System Reliability - Methods and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Marko Cepin
R4,019 Discovery Miles 40 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The importance of power system reliability is demonstrated when our electricity supply is disrupted, whether it decreases the comfort of our free time at home or causes the shutdown of our companies and results in huge economic deficits. The objective of Assessment of Power System Reliability is to contribute to the improvement of power system reliability. It consists of six parts divided into twenty chapters. The first part introduces the important background issues that affect power system reliability. The second part presents the reliability methods that are used for analyses of technical systems and processes. The third part discusses power flow analysis methods, because the dynamic aspect of a power system is an important part of related reliability assessments. The fourth part explores various aspects of the reliability assessment of power systems and their parts. The fifth part covers optimization methods. The sixth part looks at the application of reliability and optimization methods. Assessment of Power System Reliability has been written in straightforward language that continues into the mathematical representation of the methods. Power engineers and developers will appreciate the emphasis on practical usage, while researchers and advanced students will benefit from the simple examples that can facilitate their understanding of the theory behind power system reliability and that outline the procedure for application of the presented methods.

Stochastic Modeling for Reliability - Shocks, Burn-in and Heterogeneous populations (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Maxim Finkelstein,... Stochastic Modeling for Reliability - Shocks, Burn-in and Heterogeneous populations (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Maxim Finkelstein, Ji Hwan Cha
R5,032 Discovery Miles 50 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Focusing on shocks modeling, burn-in and heterogeneous populations, Stochastic Modeling for Reliability naturally combines these three topics in the unified stochastic framework and presents numerous practical examples that illustrate recent theoretical findings of the authors. The populations of manufactured items in industry are usually heterogeneous. However, the conventional reliability analysis is performed under the implicit assumption of homogeneity, which can result in distortion of the corresponding reliability indices and various misconceptions. Stochastic Modeling for Reliability fills this gap and presents the basics and further developments of reliability theory for heterogeneous populations. Specifically, the authors consider burn-in as a method of elimination of 'weak' items from heterogeneous populations. The real life objects are operating in a changing environment. One of the ways to model an impact of this environment is via the external shocks occurring in accordance with some stochastic point processes. The basic theory for Poisson shock processes is developed and also shocks as a method of burn-in and of the environmental stress screening for manufactured items are considered. Stochastic Modeling for Reliability introduces and explores the concept of burn-in in heterogeneous populations and its recent development, providing a sound reference for reliability engineers, applied mathematicians, product managers and manufacturers alike.

Reliability and Risk Evaluation of Wind Integrated Power Systems (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Roy Billinton, Rajesh Karki, Ajit Kumar... Reliability and Risk Evaluation of Wind Integrated Power Systems (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Roy Billinton, Rajesh Karki, Ajit Kumar Verma
R2,986 Discovery Miles 29 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The world is witnessing a rapid growth in wind and other renewable based electricity generation due to environmental concerns associated with electricity generation from the conventional sources. Wind power behaves quite differently than conventional electric power generating units due to its intermittent and diffuse nature. System planners and operators face the variability and uncertainty of wind power availability, and therefore, encounter considerable challenges in making decisions to maintain the adequacy and security of wind integrated power systems. This volume intends to bring out the original research work of researchers from academia and industry in understanding, quantifying and managing the risks associated with the uncertainty in wind variability in order to plan and operate a modern power system integrated with a significant proportion of wind power generation with an acceptable level of reliability. Accurate modeling of wind power variability and proper incorporation of the models in reliability and risk evaluation is very important for the planning and operation of electric power systems, and will play a crucial role in defining the requirement of various types of resources and services, such as storage and ancillary services in power systems.

Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Matthew E Benfer, Joseph L Scheffey Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)
Matthew E Benfer, Joseph L Scheffey
R1,529 Discovery Miles 15 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This SpringerBrief offers careful assessments of the appropriateness and effectiveness of currently available methodologies for fire flow. It explains the water supply requirements for firefighting including rate of flow, the residual pressure required at that flow, and the duration that is necessary to control a major fire in a specific structure. First reviewing existing fire flow calculation methodologies in the U.S. and globally, the authors determine the new information necessary to validate the existing fire flow calculation methodologies. After identifying 19 methods from the U.S., UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New England, and Canada, two types of methods are evaluated: those for building planning based on fire and building code requirements, and those for on-scene fire service use. Building planning methods are also examined, including an explanation of the range of building variables that determine fire flow. A survey form for fire departments is provided to help fire departments identify key predictive features based on construction and building parameters. Researchers and professionals in fire engineering will find the recommendations in Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies valuable.

Towards a Territorial Multi-Disaster Buildings' Resistance Certification (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Daniele Fabrizio Bignami Towards a Territorial Multi-Disaster Buildings' Resistance Certification (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Daniele Fabrizio Bignami
R1,741 Discovery Miles 17 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Disaster risk is increasing, not only in number of events, but also in incurred losses. Such increases are being driven also by the growing exposure of assets, due to the rapid urban growth, because vulnerability decreases as countries develop, but not enough to compensate. The situation will be more and more critical, due to the growth of the amount of the building stock. Thus we need new initiatives to foster upgrading of existing building and enhancement of land planning strategies. "Safe Home" scheme is aimed at increasing urban safety requirements against hazards under an advanced labeling approach. It provides a quantitative evaluation of building performance through an objective, reproducible approach, assessing risks at a land, urban and building scale. Aim of this rating system is to result in useful information to different users, like land planning decision makers, owners, purchasers, tenants or property and real estate managers.
