Brilliant, witty, perceptive essays about fly-fishing, the natural
world, and life in general by the acknowledged master of fishing
writers.
This guide describes ascents of 30 Lake District fells that can be climbed from Keswick, the Whinlatter Pass, Bassenthwaite, Hesket Newmarket, Mungrisdale and Threlkeld. The giants of the region Skiddaw and Blencathra need little introduction, their myriad routes attracting many a visitor and promising fantastic far-reaching views. The summits to the north, however, are less frequented, offering probably the closest experience to wilderness walking the Lakes has to offer, whereas to the west, the Whinlatter group present a sylvan alternative. Unlike other guidebooks which describe a single or limited number of routes to a particular destination, the aim of the Walking the Lake District Fells series is to offer all the options. These are presented as numbered sections which can be combined to create infinite possibilities - from simple ascents to longer ridge routes. You'll find the classics and popular routes alongside less traditional alternatives perfect for the wandering spirit. The series gives you both the freedom to devise your own routes and the information to make informed decisions, thanks to the clear descriptions of the routes, terrain, hazards, interesting features and safe descent paths should the weather close in. Also included are a handful of classic ridge routes for longer fell days. Mark Richards' inimitable text is complemented by HARVEY mapping and the author's own beautiful sketch topos and panoramas. Perfect for keen hillwalkers and peak-baggers alike and ideal both for pre-planning and use on the hill, Walking the Lake District Fells is the new incarnation of the Fellranger series, which sees the volumes updated and trimmed to a more practical size. These true connoisseurs' guides are sure to inspire you to get out and explore the beautiful fells of Lakeland. For those collecting fell summits, a 'Fellrangers' hill list register can be found on the Long Distance Walkers Association website.

Background information on local geology, wildlife and history, and planning details on when to go, where to stay and what to take are included to make the most out of any trip to Torridon. The region boasts spectacular and distinctive landscapes and breathtaking views. Steep-sided rocky mountains rise above long winding lochs, both freshwater and sea. This is a land for those who love open spaces, vast horizons, and the domination of nature.
The origins of the game of rugby and the codification of the rules which defined the game have been glorified in numerous legends, some of which are little more than sporting hagiography. Following on from the success of The Rules of Association Football 1863 and in time for the Rugby World Cup in September - October 2007, this book investigates the origins of the game of rugby and reproduces for the first time in a single book both the first rules of the game, drawn up at Rugby School in 1845 and the first rules of the Rugby Football Union, published in 1871. The introduction by Jed Smith, the curator of the Rugby Football Museum in Twickenham, will provide the first systematic exploration of the origin of the rules of the game and their development. Includes images from the unique manuscript held at the Rugby Football Union as well as nineteenth-century illustrations of the game as it was first played, capturing its early spirit and enthusiasm.

Here's what Liz Yelling (Double Olympian and Commonwealth Bronze Medalist) said about it: "If you are new to running this is a basic beginners guide to getting started. It will cover all your questions about where to start and how to start. The author Annie has written this from her heart, enlightening others from her own experiences as a beginner. Now a regular runner and coach she now hopes to help others embarking on their own running campaign." The author Annie Page is a qualified UK Athletics Running Coach, an NLP Trainer and Master Practitioner and a Coaching Master - who really enjoys running! She says "I had not run since leaving school, where I was probably one of the few who actually enjoyed cross country. I started running again in 2004, with a friend and we started off not being able to run for more than a couple of minutes and then needing to walk, which was great because the plan we were following told us to do just that (there is one at the end of the book). From there I fell back in love with running, with racing and getting out in the fresh air and enjoying the countryside. I joined my local club Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers and have enjoyed the camaraderie that goes with belonging to a fun, friendly, supportive and social club. I wanted to give something back to the club and so became a coach and have attended various UK Athletics run courses over the years to keep my knowledge up to date." Content includes... Why Run? An incredibly entertaining and perceptive look at the most controversial moment in Premier League history. 25th January 1995 A cold winter's evening. Manchester United away against Crystal Palace at a packed-out Selhurst Park. Eric Cantona, United's mercurial talisman, has been man-marked closely all game by Richard Shaw and become increasingly frustrated. In the 48th minute, Cantona's temper boils over and he kicks out at Shaw. The ref shows him a red card. On his way off the pitch, a Palace fan rushes towards the hoardings to hurl abuse. The Frenchman loses it. He launches into the crowd, aiming a kung-fu kick at the fan's chest. He is forcibly restrained and then taken off down the tunnel. The football world is stunned. Nothing like this has ever happened before. What followed has entered football folklore: the media furore, the seagulls following the trawler, and the longest domestic ban ever handed to a player; it would end up lasting 250 days. As Manchester United's campaign stuttered towards a trophy-less conclusion, surrendering the league on the last day of the season and losing the FA Cup final, Cantona withdrew from the public eye. But, behind closed doors, Ferguson was planning the most remarkable of fresh starts for his star player and for a new-look United. 250 Days tells the story in brilliant detail of one of the most turbulent times in United's recent history. Showing Cantona in a new light, and the genius of Ferguson's man management and vision in close relief, it is an incredibly entertaining and insightful look at the most controversial episode of the Premier League era. |
