Educational Partnerships and the State is a compelling collection of essays by an international group of scholars that provides a critical exploration of the role of partnerships in contemporary educational reform. Their focus is on the expanding role that collaboration between the public and private sector has come to play in the governing of schools, children, and families in response to an array of worldwide economic and social changes. The contributors to this volume highlight the new relationship between civil society and the state through partnerships and what that linkage has come to mean for an array of educational issues including academic achievement, school governance, school parent-relationships, teacher education, the construction of family and community involvement, and the discourses of reform as practices that order participation and action.

English Language Standards in Higher Education has been written in a context in which the English language skills of students are increasingly under the spotlight due to the monumental impact of globalisation on the higher education sector. The underpinning tenets of the book are that in all contexts in which English is the medium of instruction English language acquisition is central to academic success, and that this requires continuous and systematic development throughout the course of study. The authors are unwavering in this conviction and offer a variety of constructive approaches, acknowledging that there is no `one-size-fits-all' approach to developing English language proficiency in higher education. This book synthesises current research in English language standards to offer new approaches to addressing a growing challenge for those leading and teaching in higher education institutions around the world. A concise, accessible book, English Language Standards in Higher Education provides both a comprehensive analysis of English language challenges in higher education and more importantly offers a framework for institutional and pedagogical planning, with practical advice and suggestions. The focus of this book and the evidence-based suggestions it provides will strongly resonate in countries where English is the main language of communication, as well as in countries where English is used as the medium of instruction in higher education. Key points Provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges of teaching students for whom English is an additional language. Offers a framework for institutional and pedagogical planning with practical advice and suggestions.
How does the home experience of children from poor and ethnic minority communities influence their adaptation to school? How does the traditional "child-centred" and progressive pedagogy of early years classrooms meet the needs of children from culturally diverse backgrounds? This title seeks to address these key questions by tracing the learning experiences of individual children from a poor inner-urban neighbourhood - half of them from Bangladeshi families - as they acquire the knowledge appropriate to their home culture and then take this knowledge to their reception class. The book highlights the small differences in family life - in parenting practices, in perspectives on childhood, and in beliefs about work and play - which make a big difference to children's adaptations to school. In other words, it shows how children succeed and fail from their early days at school.; It shows too how the "good intentions" of good teachers can sometimes allow children from certain backgrounds to become disaffected, and learn to fail; and it suggests ways of working with children from working class and multicultural families which may help both children and parents to gain a better understandi
Ever since the massive immigration from Europe of the late 19th
century, American society has accommodated people of many cultures,
religions, languages, and expectations. The task of integration has
increasingly fallen to the schools, where children are taught a
common language and a set of democratic values and sent on their
ways to become productive members of society. How American schools
have set about educating these diverse students, and how these
students' needs have altered the face of education, are issues
central to the social history of the United States in the 20th
century.
This textbook is a comprehensive introduction to the assessment of students in K-12 schools who use two or more languages in their daily life: English Language Learners (ELLs), or Emergent Bilinguals. The book includes a thorough examination of the policy, history and assessment/measurement issues that educators should understand in order to best advocate for their students. The author presents a decision-making framework called PUMI (Purpose, Use, Method, Instrument) that practitioners can use to better inform assessment decisions for bilingual children. The book will be an invaluable resource in teacher preparation programs, but will also help policy-makers and educators make better decisions to support their students.
The second volume of the Finnish course introduces the learner to structures needed in writing, as well as speech, especially the use of participles and infinitives as substitutes for various subordinate clauses. Dialogs and narratives are without English translations and the number of new words listed for each chapter has been somewhat reduced. This exercise book helps reinforce the lessons learned through the Audio and Text.

Public education at the crossroads Confronting a reality that many policy makers would prefer to ignore, contributors to this volume offer the latest information on the trend toward the racial and socioeconomic resegregation of southern schools. In the region that has achieved more widespread public school integration than any other since 1970, resegregation, combined with resource inequities and the current ""accountability movement,"" is now bringing public education in the South to a critical crossroads. In thirteen essays, leading thinkers in the field of race and public education present not only the latest data and statistics on the trend toward resegregation but also the legal and policy analysis of why these trends are accelerating, how they are harmful, and what can be done to counter them. What's at stake is the quality of education available to both white and nonwhite students, they argue. This volume will help educators, policy makers, and concerned citizens begin a much-needed dialogue about how America can best educate its increasingly multiethnic student population in the twenty-first century.
An increasingly popular approach to second and foreign language education, this book focuses on incidental learning: how students learn words from reading. Despite its popularity, some researchers have questioned this theory that students can learn new words by inferring meanings based on a text they are reading. So, why does the incidental method not work for some students? What are the conditions for naturalistic learning to occur? What do students need to be able to do while reading in order to learn words successfully? Tackling these questions head-on, this book provides researchers and educators with a more specific account of the processes behind the seemingly naturalistic method. Clarifying the connection between reading and word learning processes, Megumi Hamada proposes a new model, the Cognitive Model of Word-Meaning Inference, to describe how we obtain and use word-form and contextual information for learning words and the pedagogical applications of this. A significant new contribution to research in the field, Learning Words from Reading provides a cognitive perspective on how students learn new words from reading in a second or foreign language.
