Did you know that at certain times of the month, women are inclined to dance more? Flirt more? Or that PMS may have evolved to remove boyfriends with unfit sperm? Why? Hormones.
Hormones help women choose mates, produce healthy offspring, raise them successfully, and, ultimately, make better decisions.
In this paradigm-shifting book, Martie Haselton explains how hormonal intelligence works – both its strengths and its weaknesses – and how women can track and understand their desires, fears and perceptions. By exploring the biological processes that profoundly influence our behaviour, Hormonal sets forth a radical, new understanding of women's bodies, one that sees hormonal cycles as adaptive solutions to genuine biological challenges.
This book will empower women everywhere to embrace their biology.

'The final step to equality has to be turning the menopause into a
topic we can happily discuss, and even celebrate. In these pages,
Christa D'Souza puts us firmly on that path.' - MARIELLA FROSTRUP
'Been there... survived that... but how I wish I'd had this
menopause tour guide to get me through. Brilliant and beautifully
written.' - CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR 'Warm, witty and wise. No woman -
or man, come to that - should be without this book.' - CRESSIDA
CONNOLLY There has never been a better time to be a menopausal
woman. Technology is such that 60 really is the new 40 (or even
35). But, for Christa D'Souza, some nagging questions remain...
What is the point of us now that we are officially biologically
irrelevant? Are hormones safe, even if you've had cancer? Is there
a cut-off point for plaits? In this fabulously confessional romp
through the menopause, D'Souza tells us what it was like for her,
and what it will be like for you. She meets a bunch of menopausal
nuns in San Francisco, goes hunter-gathering with the Hadza tribe
in Tanzania, interviews experts around the world to get the latest
science... and discovers along the way some surprising silver
linings to this key milestone of maturity. Menopause: The True
Story is a treat of a book - liberating, empowering and
unexpectedly moving in its truth-telling. *Menopause: The True
Story is an updated edition of The Hot Topic, first published in
2016*
Breast cancer is reaching epidemic levels, especially among black
women. This survival guide provides tools that women—black women
in particular—can use to identify and combat this all-too-common
threat. This "what you need to know" guide is unique in its common
sense, "laywoman's" approach and particular relevance to women of
color. Its premise is simple: ignorance and lack of education about
breast cancer signs and symptoms are still all too prevalent among
black women. Many women are not informed about resources available
for early detection screening and are not referred for mammography
screening. They may also receive significantly delayed
treatment—especially black women. For those reasons and more,
black women with or at risk for breast cancer need an advocate who
speaks for them and tells them the truth. They have that advocate
in Cheryl Holloway, PhD—and in this book. A breast cancer
survivor and cancer researcher, Dr. Holloway draws on her personal
experience and research to offer something far different than the
usual medical/oncological works. Her book provides support, current
information, and practical advice for confronting and beating the
disease. The book is divided into four parts. "Dealing with the
Basics" explains how breast cancer hits black women harder and
discusses the types of breast cancer they may develop, with an
emphasis on the most dangerous. The second section offers practical
information, such as how screenings work and the meaning of various
breast cancer tests. Part three describes treatments, including
surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, combined
therapy, and other options. The final section describes how to stay
vigilant after the cancer is gone and also discusses other forms of
cancer for which black women are at risk, such as lung cancer,
colon cancer, and cervical cancer.
This memoir chronicles the unique ordeals of identical twin sisters
Diana and Julia Lockwood. Even among twins, Diana and Julia were
especially close and deeply entwined- they were more than just
sisters or best friends, they were like one soul in two bodies.
While their total attunement sometimes saved them in funny and
unexpected ways, it also eventually destroyed them. A survivor of
sexual assault and anorexia and living with Asperger's, the author
tells her own life story and weaves Julia's letters and journal
entries into the text. While Diana survived the struggles that led
her to three suicide attempts, her twin unfortunately took her own
life only a year after their father did the same. This book
explores the life and relationship of twins separated by tragedy
and follows a woman's struggle to make it on her own.
'A book that'll change your perspective on life. You'll not be able

Sophie Morgan is the epitome of grit and determination. Her writing

Mail on Sunday As seen on 'Living Wild; How to Change your Life' a
two-part prime-time series on Channel 4, Loose Women and The Great
Celebrity Bake Off for SU2C On the precipice of starting her adult
life, aged eighteen, Sophie, a rebellious and incorrigible wild
child, crashed her car and was instantly paralysed from the chest
down. Rushed to hospital, everything she had dreamed for her life
was instantly forgotten and her journey to rediscover herself and
build a different life began. But being told she would never walk
again would come to be the least of her concerns. Over the next
eighteen years, as she strived to come to terms with the change in
her body, her relationships were put to the test; she has had to
learn to cope with the many unexpected and unpredictable setbacks
of living with paralysis; she has had to overcome her own and other
people's perceptions of disability and explore the limits of her
abilities, all whilst searching for love, acceptance, meaning,
identity, and purpose. Driving Forwards is a remarkable and
powerful memoir, detailing Sophie's life-changing injury, her
recovery, and her life since. Strikingly honest, her story is
unusual and yet relatable, inspiring us to see how adversity can be
channelled into opportunity and how ongoing resilience can
ultimately lead to empowerment. 'Raw, life affirming and gorgeously
written - this book is filled with extraordinary honesty, courage
and warmth. Sophie's words will make us all braver and more
hopeful.' Daisy Buchanan 'A truly astonishing read about the power
of never giving up.' Sun 'F***king hell!! This book is absolutely
brilliant . . . One of the best memoirs I've ever read. Honest and
so blooming human, it's fantastic.' Kathy Burke
According to the popular press in the mid twentieth century,
American women, in a misguided attempt to act like men in work and
leisure, were drinking more. "Lady Lushes" were becoming a
widespread social phenomenon. From the glamorous hard-drinking
flapper of the 1920s to the disgraced and alcoholic wife and mother
played by Lee Remick in the 1962 film "Days of Wine and Roses,"
alcohol consumption by American women has been seen as both a
prerogative and as a threat to health, happiness, and the social
order. In Lady Lushes, medical historian Michelle L. McClellan
traces the story of the female alcoholic from the late-nineteenth
through the twentieth century. She draws on a range of sources to
demonstrate the persistence of the belief that alcohol use is
antithetical to an idealized feminine role, particularly one that
glorifies motherhood. Lady Lushes offers a fresh perspective on the
importance of gender role ideology in the formation of medical
knowledge and authority.

Out of the 100 million women-almost 11 million in the United States
alone-who are on the pill, roughly 60 percent take it for
non-contraceptive reasons like painful periods, endometriosis,
PCOS, and acne. While the birth control pill is widely prescribed
as a quick-fix solution to a variety of women's health conditions,
taking it can also result in other more serious and dangerous
health consequences. Did you know that women on the pill are more
likely to be prescribed an antidepressant? That they are at
significantly increased risk for autoimmune disease, heart attack,
thyroid and adrenal disorders, and even breast and cervical cancer?
That the pill can even cause vaginal dryness, unexplained hair
loss, flagging libido, extreme fatigue, and chronic infection. As
if women didn't have enough to worry about, that little pill we're
taking to manage our symptoms is only making things worse. Jolene
Brighten, ND, author of the groundbreaking new book BEYOND THE
PILL, specializes in treating women's hormone imbalances caused by
the pill and shares her proven 30-day program designed to reverse

manageable period free of cramps, acne, stress, or PMS without the
harmful side effects that come with the pill * Detox the liver,
support the adrenals and thyroid, heal the gut, reverse metabolic
mayhem, boost fertility, and enhance mood * Transition into a

hormone-balancing recipes Featuring simple diet and lifestyle
