Modern approaches to practice, including the use of imaging to guide anaesthetic practice, add further depth to the fine full-colour anatomical illustrations. Designed for anaesthetists, Anatomy for Anaesthetists covers: The Respiratory Pathway, Lungs, Thoracic Wall and Diaphragm The Heart and Great Veins of the Neck The Peripheral Nerves The Autonomic Nervous System The Cranial Nerves The Anatomy of Pain Clinical Notes throughout provide the clinical context for the anatomical detail. Designed for trainees, but of continuing relevance to practicing anaesthetists, and now in its Golden Jubilee edition, Anatomy for Anaesthetists provides a central pillar of anaesthetic knowledge.

Guide to Dissection of the Human Body (Hardcover): F.P. Lisowski Guide to Dissection of the Human Body (Hardcover)
F.P. Lisowski
R1,280 Discovery Miles 12 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This manual is intended to guide and facilitate human anatomical dissections. It is flexible enough for use in long as well as short courses. It can be particularly useful as a link with real anatomy when used together with computerised-anatomy programs, or where students do not dissect but merely look at atlases, prosections and models. There is an introduction for each anatomical region; and for each section to be dissected there is an overview, a dissection schedule which guides the student through a set of instructions, a summary and a list of objectives that are clinically important. The terminology used is the latest. The manual is suitable for medical and dental students. It is also of value for advanced knowledge of anatomy for surgery and in relation to the interpretation of normal anatomy in non-invasive imaging of anatomy for clinical diagnosis, surgical practice on cadaveric material, and in discussions about clinical problems.

Guide To Dissection Of The Human Body, A (Hardcover): Frederick Peter Lisowski Guide To Dissection Of The Human Body, A (Hardcover)
Frederick Peter Lisowski
R2,539 Discovery Miles 25 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This invaluable manual is intended to guide and facilitate human anatomical dissections. It is flexible enough for use in long as well as short courses, and is thus structured in such a way that the dissection of the body can be completed in 110 to 160 hours. Although some medical schools have reduced the amount of dissection, the North American schools have lengthened their courses. The manual can also be used in those courses where only part of the body is dissected and even in the study of prosected material. It can be particularly useful as a link with real anatomy when used together with computerised-anatomy programs; many curricula emphasise that the student should go back and forth between the body and computer programs. The guide is also useful where students do not dissect but merely look at atlases, prosections and models, by providing a link to real, living and variable anatomy.Nowadays many anatomy courses are aimed solely at systems anatomy. Although important as systems are, regions are clinically vital since many more problems concern damage to several systems because the lesions are regional. This is where the guide is of considerable help. There is an introduction for each anatomical region; and for each section to be dissected there is an overview, a dissection schedule which guides the student through a set of instructions, a summary and a list of objectives that are clinically important. The terminology used is the latest. This manual is suitable for medical, dental, osteopathy and chiropody schools as well as human biology and science programs that include dissection in their undergraduate gross anatomy course. It is also of value for advanced knowledge of anatomy for surgery as required by further qualifications and in relation to specialised training involving interpretation of normal anatomy in non-invasive imaging of anatomy for clinical diagnosis, practice of clinical (surgical) skills on cadaveric material, and in discussions about clinical problems.

Jan Kopriva, Jan Zizka
R3,655 R3,354 Discovery Miles 33 540 Save R301 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, featuring more than 180 high spatial resolution images obtained with state-of-the-art MDCT and MRI scanners, depicts in superb detail the anatomy of the temporal bone, recognized to be one of the most complex anatomic areas. In order to facilitate identification of individual anatomic structures, the images are presented in the same way in which they emanate from contemporary imaging modalities, namely as consecutive submillimeter sections in standardized slice orientations, with all anatomic landmarks labeled. While various previous publications have addressed the topic of temporal bone anatomy, none has presented complete isotropic submillimeter 3D volume datasets of MDCT or MRI examinations. The Temporal Bone MDCT and MRI Anatomy offers radiologists, head and neck surgeons, neurosurgeons, and anatomists a comprehensive guide to temporal bone sectional anatomy that resembles as closely as possible the way in which it is now routinely reviewed, i.e., on the screens of diagnostic workstations or picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).

Cytokines and Growth Factors in Blood Transfusion - Proceedings of the Twentyfirst International Symposium on Blood... Cytokines and Growth Factors in Blood Transfusion - Proceedings of the Twentyfirst International Symposium on Blood Transfusion, Groningen 1996, organized by the Red Cross Blood Bank Noord Nederland (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)

Cytokines are cellular growth factors which also provide communication between cells and their milieu. This clearly is an exciting area in modern medicine that will have significant impact on various facets of transfusion. Erythropoietin therapy stimulates red cell production while thrombopoietin seems to positively affect megakaryopoiesis and can be an added armamentarium for the thrombocytopenic patient. Using haematnopoietic growth factors, stem cells could be mobilized early to the peripheral blood for collection and subsequent transplantation into haemato-oncology patients instead of bone marrow transplantation. Using a cocktail of cytokines in cell culture, stem cells could be expanded and selected for therapy. Cytokines and growth factors can even be modified, which may lead to successful gene therapy in malignancies, including solid tumour vaccines. However, the presence of cytokines in certain blood products could have biological effects following transfusion, although its clinical relevance needs to be ascertained. There is much potential for the use of cytokines in the treatment of infections. Early diagnostic methods are now available to monitor their levels and relevance. It is likely that cytokines will increasingly play a role in therapy and could develop our fundamental knowledge about the development of T-cells. An ethical dilemma remains, however, regarding the use of cytokines in healthy donors for harvesting suitable specific cells. Longer clinical observation will be necessary to gather the necessary information. Cytokines and growth factors in blood transfusion was the theme of the 21st International Symposium in Blood Transfusion, where twenty clinicians and scientists, experts in their own fields, were invited to update the above information. Their findings are presented in four sections in this volume: Fundamental aspects - cytokines in development of T-cells, growth factors in haematopoiesis, growth factor receptors and signal transduction, cytokine response in platelet and whole blood transfusions. Function, production and diagnosis &endash; laboratory diagnostics of cytokines and growth factors, cytokines in blood components, cytokines and growth factors in cell expansions, cytokines for genetic modification towards gene therapy, progenitor cells from healthy donors. Application in clinical medicine &endash; clinical relevance of cytokines in transfusion products, cytokines and growth factors in solid tumours, gene therapy in malignancies, vaccine strategies inducing T-cell immunity against tumours, cytokines in the treatment of infections, thrombopoietin and megakaryopoiesis. Future potential use in transfusion medicine &endash; erythropoietin, immunotherapy, ethical aspects of the use of cytokines and growth factors in donors, potential of cytokines and growth factors in transfusion medicine.

Immunopharmacology of Epithelial Barriers (Hardcover): Clive Page Immunopharmacology of Epithelial Barriers (Hardcover)
Clive Page; Volume editing by Roy Goldie
R3,439 Discovery Miles 34 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The realization that epithelial tissues are not simply passive barriers to the adsorption of materials into internal environments has brought about an enormous growth of investigation of mucosal functions and their active and passive protective roles. Epithelia are highly organized but complex structures, subserving numerous functions, including immunological defence. The use of pharmacological tools in these systems is increasing, which is improving our understanding of epithelial immunobiology.;This volume adopts a step-by-step approach whereby each chapter builds upon the previous one, progressively adding important foundation information, culminating in a series of chapters concerning particular epithelia, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal and ocular. The result is a comprehensive, but integrated, treatise of piethelial function and its immunopharmacology, which aims to scrve as an appropriate starting point at which the clinical pulmonologist and the research scientist can obtain an appreciation of some aspects of epithelial immununopharmacology as they are currently understood.

Biomechanics - Circulation (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997): Y. C. Fung Biomechanics - Circulation (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997)
Y. C. Fung
R5,009 Discovery Miles 50 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The theory of blood circulation is one of the oldest in science, and remains a vigorous field of study with many features that have been described in physical and mathematical terms. In Biomechanics: Circulation, Fung presents a treatment of the fundamental biomechanics of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, using a mathematical approach to illuminate problems in experiemental design, data collection, modeling, observations, and theory. This second edition includes extensive changes incorporating major advances in hemodynamics that have occurred during the past decade. There are new chapters on coronary blood flow and skeletal muscle microcirculation. As in the first edition, Biomechanics: Circulation emphasizes the coupling of fluids and solids in the cardiovascular pulmonary systems, and consistently brings both morphology and rheology to bear on the analysis of blood flow. Numerous exercises are proposed to encourage the reader to formulate and solve problems. Together with his other two treatises on biomechanics (Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissue and Biomechanics: Motion, Flow, Stress and Growth), this book confirms that "although it is clear that Fung has made substantial contributions as a researcher...it can equally well be said that he is an exceptional teacher" (Quart. Rev. Biol.). Y.C. Fung is professor emeritus in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California at San Diego.

David J. Lim, Janet Stoeckert
R4,248 Discovery Miles 42 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dr. Howard House, founder of the House Ear Institute and House Ear Clinic often uses the analogy of planting a seed when referring to establishing the House Ear Institute in 1946. Two grateful patients of Dr. House put forth the idea that his knowledge and innovative skills could be used to expand the understanding of hearing impairment and its treatment. Those two early patients provided the "seed money" to begin the Institute. Since that time, the growth has been phenomenal from a one-man laboratory to a multidisciplinary facility boasting over 175 scien tists, physicians, and support staff, all dedicated to the advancement of otologic research and education. Six years ago after a half-century of remarkable success with prosthetic and device research, the Institute began cultivating a new field of endeavor-cell and molecular biology. Don Nielsen, then the Institute's Executive Vice President for Research and Scientific Director, began exploring the potential for hair cell regen eration and presented his ideas to the Board of Trustees. For a period of six months, we did a lot of fact finding to assess what role the Institute might take in this excit ing new field."

Principles of Anatomy according to the Opinion of Galen by Johann Guinter and Andreas Vesalius (Hardcover): Vivian Nutton Principles of Anatomy according to the Opinion of Galen by Johann Guinter and Andreas Vesalius (Hardcover)
Vivian Nutton
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Principles of Anatomy according to the Opinion of Galen is a translation of Johann Guinter's textbook as revised and annotated by Guinter's student, Andreas Vesalius, in 1538. Despite Vesalius' fame as an anatomist, his 1538 revision has attracted almost no attention. However, this new translation shows the significant rewrites and additional information added to the original based on his own dissections. 250 newly discovered annotations by Vesalius himself, published here in full for the first time, also show his working methods and ideas. Together they offer remarkable insights into Vesalius' intellectual biography and the development of his most famous work: De humani corporis fabrica, 1543. An extensive introduction by Vivian Nutton also provides new information on Johann Guinter, and his substantial use of Vesalius' work for his own revised version of the text in 1539. Their joint production, a student textbook, is set against a background of the development of Renaissance anatomy, and of attitudes to their ancient Greek predecessor, Galen of Pergamum. This text will be of great interest to historians of science and medicine, as well as to Renaissance scholars.
