The basal ganglia are involved in complex brain functions, from voluntary movement control to learning and reward processing, and they are implicated in numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders. Information from the cerebral cortex and thalamus is conveyed to basal ganglia nuclei via glutamate release, while dopamine from the midbrain is released in close proximity to glutamate. At the heart of both function and dysfunction of basal ganglia circuits is the interaction of these two neurotransmitters, dopamine and glutamate. Elucidating the relationship between their molecular and cellular effects and behavioural significance has been challenging, but in the past 5 10 years, improved labeling, imaging, recording, and genetic manipulation approaches have yielded new information on how dopamine and glutamate interact to generate the circuit activity underpinning basal ganglia function. Dopamine Glutamate Interactions in the Basal Ganglia synthesizes this recent research from the level of receptor molecules all the way to complex behaviours and disease. Current insights from research on individual neurons and synapses, detailed circuit analysis, and learning and action functions of the basal ganglia are presented against a historical perspective. The book also discusses compromised dopamine glutamate interaction in disorders of basal ganglia function, including Parkinson s disease, Huntington s disease, and drug addiction.

Although written in the middle of the 19th century, 'Gray's Anatomy' is still the most famous and important medical reference book ever written. An essential element of the book is the illustrative work of Henry Carter, undisputedly the most talented medical artist of his day.
The Royal College of Radiologists' First Anatomy module aims to ensure that this critical area in the interpretation of radiological images is thoroughly learned in the first year of training. This revision aid includes ten FRCR Part 1 practice exams with answers, equating to 200 high quality radiological images of normal anatomy that include CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopic studies and plain radiography. Following the examination format, five questions are set for each image, while detailed answers, clinical points and gems provide explanations and highlight learning points. This book will be ideal for trainees sitting the First FRCR examination, but also for those in other surgical or medical specialties who are exposed to radiology on a daily basis and wish to increase their understanding of radiological studies. Medical students and prospective radiology trainees may also find this book a helpful introduction and revision aid. 'A comprehensive, well structured and above all highly relevant book for all candidates approaching the new RCR anatomy exam.' - from the Foreword by Niall Power
Beneath the original Venetian glass and rosewood case at La Specola in Florence lies Clemente Susini's Anatomical Venus (c. 1790), a perfect object whose luxuriously bizarre existence challenges belief. It - or, better, she - was conceived of as a means to teach human anatomy without need for constant dissection, which was messy, ethically fraught and subject to quick decay. This life-sized wax woman is adorned with glass eyes and human hair and can be dismembered into dozens of parts revealing, at the final remove, a beatific foetus curled in her womb. Sister models soon appeared throughout Europe, where they not only instructed the specialist students, but also delighted the general public. Deftly crafted dissectable female wax models and slashed beauties of the world's anatomy museums and fairgrounds of the 18th and 19th centuries take centre stage in this disquieting volume. Since their creation in late 18th-century Florence, these wax women have seduced, intrigued and amazed. Today, they also confound, troubling the edges of our neat categorical divides: life and death, science and art, body and soul, effigy and pedagogy, spectacle and education, kitsch and art. Incisive commentary and captivating imagery reveal the evolution of these enigmatic sculptures from wax effigy to fetish figure and the embodiment of the uncanny.
Since its inception two generations ago, oculoplastic surgery has constantly evolved. What was once dogma may now be passe. Procedures that were once passe may be resurrected and utilized again. Providing simplified solutions to complex problems, Atlas of Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery is a practical, problem-orientated guide to the management of common oculoplastic and orbital disorders. Based on Dr. Spoor s thirty years of practice, the book emphasizes the more common oculoplastic conditions likely to present to a busy ophthalmologist. The text covers upper and lower eyelid surgery and repair, orbital surgery, and the prevention and treatment of potential complications. The procedures are described with surgical photos and illustrations in a casual, didactic fashion, as a senior doctor would use instructing a resident or fellow. The book is essential reading for ophthalmologists, oculoplastic surgeons, neuro-ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons."
For surgeons, physicians, and anatomists involved in the management and study of disorders of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas, eponyms are part of everyday communication. They help to describe anatomical features, operative procedures, surgical instruments, and diseases. Unfortunately, many have become distorted or are inaccurately applied. Few of us understand their derivation or the remarkable people and controversies behind them. This book explores the origins of seventy eponyms in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and anatomy. Each section is deliberately short and intended for quick reference, providing accurate information about the origin of the eponym and the figure behind it. Meticulously researched, and beautifully illustrated with more than 150 photographs, Eponyms in Surgery and Anatomy of the Liver, Bile Ducts and Pancreas is aimed at surgeons, physicians and anatomists, and is sure to enrich the reader's historical perspective of this fascinating branch of surgery and anatomy.
Disease Pathways: An Atlas of Human Disease Signaling Pathways is designed to fill a void of illustrated reviews about the cellular mechanisms of human diseases. It covers 42 of the most common non-oncologic diseases and illustrates the connections between the molecular causes of the disease and its symptoms. This resource provides readers with detailed information about the disease molecular pathways, while keeping the presentation simple. Pathway models that aggregate the knowledge about protein-protein interactions have become indispensable tools in many areas of molecular biology, pharmacology, and medicine. In addition to disease pathways, the book includes a comprehensive overview of molecular signaling biology and application of pathway models in the analysis of big data for drug discovery and personalized medicine. This is a must-have reference for general biologists, biochemists, students, medical workers, and everyone interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human disease.
Histology is the discipline of biology that involves the microscopic examination of thin stained tissue sections in order to study their structure and correlate it with function. Histology can detect signs of disease not easily recognized on gross examination and can therefore be of interest in fish health supervision. The aim of this volume is to present a general reference guide providing an extensive set of histological images of fishes (about 40 species). This atlas is designed for use by students and researchers, biologists, ichthyologists, fish farmers, veterinarians working in fisheries and, of course, by comparative histologists who want to learn more about the fish world.

This book is the first modern history of medieval European anatomical images. Richly illustrated, it explores the many ways in which medieval surgeons, doctors, monks and artists understood and depicted human anatomy. Taylor McCall refutes the common misconception that Renaissance artists and anatomists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Andreas Vesalius were the ‘fathers’ of anatomy, and the first to perform scientific human dissection; on the contrary, she proves these Renaissance figures drew upon centuries of visual and written tradition in their works. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to general audiences interested in the history of the body and medical professionals curious about the history of their discipline, as well as historians of art, medicine and medieval culture.
