Paolo Fornasiero, Mauro Graziani
R2,198 Discovery Miles 21 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As energy demands continue to surge worldwide, the need for more efficient and environmentally neutral energy production also becomes increasingly apparent. Renewable Resources and Renewable Energy: A Global Challenge presents a well-rounded perspective on the development of bio-based feedstocks, biodegradable plastics, hydrogen energy, fuel cells, and other aspects related to renewable resources and sustainable energy production. The book first examines the transformation of bio-based renewable feedstock into valuable, clean, and economically attractive products. It explains the catalytic processes involved and surveys the relevant commercial technologies that are available. The book highlights how these technologies can be used for efficient waste management solutions, particularly for the synthetic polymers industry, as well as energy production. The authors also pay particular attention to current trends for hydrogen-based and fuel cell-based technologies and provide real-world case studies of renewable energy projects in Asia and South America. An accessible reference for both scientists and non-scientists, Renewable Resources and Renewable Energy offers valuable insight into the chemical processes and practical considerations as well as the advantages, challenges, and opportunities for developing these technologies and achieving more sustainable energy production.

Constitutive Models for Rubber IX (Hardcover): Bohdana Marvalova, Iva Petrikova Constitutive Models for Rubber IX (Hardcover)
Bohdana Marvalova, Iva Petrikova
R6,311 Discovery Miles 63 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The unique properties of rubber make it ideal for use in a wide variety of engineering applications such as tyres, engine mounts, shock absorbers, flexible joints and seals. Developing diverse elastomeric elements for various structures involves numerical simulations of their performance, which are based on reliable constitutive models of the material being simulated. Numerical modelling should be underpinned by a detailed experimental investigation into the thermomechanical behaviour of rubber components in operating conditions. The 9th volume of Constitutive Models for Rubber, containing the papers presented at the the Ninth European Conference on Constitutive Models for Rubber (ECCMR 2015, Prague, Czech Republic, 1-4 September 2015), offers engineers, scientists and postgraduate students an overview of recent theoretical and experimental research on the behaviour, properties and modelling of rubber. The contributions have been grouped under to the following headings: Ageing, Friction & Abrasion, Adhesion, Swelling, Continuum Mechanical Models & Numerical Implementation, Hyperelasticity, Micromechanical Approaches, Fracture, Fatigue & Lifetime Prediction, Mullins Effect, Strain Induced Crystallization, Thermal Effects, Reinforcement & Vulcanization, Design & Applications, Magnetosensitive, Ionic & Electroactive Elastomers and Foams. The papers presented are, however, not limited to these topics but reflect the complexity of diverse and exciting problems in the modelling of the behaviour of rubber.

Simultaneous Sulfate Reduction and Metal Precipitation in an Inverse Fluidized Bed Reactor - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Paperback):... Simultaneous Sulfate Reduction and Metal Precipitation in an Inverse Fluidized Bed Reactor - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Paperback)
Denys Kristalia Villa Gomez
R2,423 Discovery Miles 24 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Industrial activities like textile processing and mining are typical sources of heavy metal-rich wastewaters. The sulfate reducing process has become an attractive method for the production of sulfide to precipitate metals since most of these streams also contain sulfate, which is the electron acceptor and, in less common cases, chemical oxygen demand which is the electron donor of sulfate reducing bacteria. The inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor is a system for the production of biogenic sulfide and metal precipitation in the same unit due to its configuration: the biomass floats on top of the reactor, whereas metal sulfide precipitates settle and thus can be recovered at the bottom. The main objective of this thesis was to elucidate the factors affecting simultaneous sulfate reduction and precipitation of heavy metals in an IFB reactor in order to optimize the metal recovery from wastewaters such as acid mine drainage. Therefore, this thesis focused on varying different operational conditions to study their effect on the solid-liquid separation and purity of the metal sulfide precipitates as well as on their effect on the sulfate reducing process. Furthermore, one chapter was focused on the study of strategies for sulfide control in the IFB reactor. In addition, recommendations for further research to improve the recovery of the metal sulfides in bioreactors are given.

Part I reviews the evolution of theoretical models for surfactant self-assembly, and introduces a model for interpreting ion-specific effects on aggregate properties. Part II focuses on interactions of surfactant solutions with solid supports; uses contact angles to understand hydrophobic/hydrophilic changes in a lipid layer; uses surface tension to understand molecular arrangements at interfaces; reviews spreading phenomena; discusses pattern formation on solid surfaces; and applies tensiometry to probe flavor components of espresso. Part III discusses novel DNA-based materials, multifunctional poly(amino acid)s-based graft polymers for drug delivery, and polymeric surfactants for stabilizing suspensions and emulsions. Part IV introduces farm-based biosurfactants from natural products and "greener" biosurfactants from bacteria. Part V explores lyotropic liquid crystals and their applications in triggered drug release; microemulsion properties and controlled drug release; the role of hydrotopes in formulations and in enhancing solubilization in liquid crystals; the potential of ionic liquids to generate tunable and selective reaction media; and provides an overview of stimuli-responsive surfactants. Focusing on emulsions, Part VI reviews the design of emulsion properties for various commercial applications, the role of surfactants in the oil and gas industries, and surfactant mechanisms for soil removal via microemulsions and emulsification.
