Until now, no comprehensive handbook on industrial biocatalysis has been available. Soliciting chapters on virtually every aspect of biocatalysis from international experts most actively researching the field, the Handbook of Industrial Biocatalysis fills this need. The handbook is divided into three sections based on types of substrates. The first section describes the newest biotechnology and bioprocesses for producing industrial products from hydrophobic substrates such as oils and fats. The discussion of biocatalysis covers single and multiple catalytic reactions involved in the creation of products as well as molecular manipulation of enzymes and product recovery. The products include healthy food, nutritional supplements, nutraceuticals, specialty chemicals, surfactants, biopolymers, and antimicrobial agents. The second section covers the production of value-added products from carbohydrate substrates. The scope of this section includes ethanol production, oligosaccharides and glycosides, utilization of hemicelluloses, and carbohydrate-active enzymes. The third section is dedicated to other potential industrial applications such as bioelectrocatalysis for synthesizing chemicals, fuels, and new drugs. The authors explore novel nutrition delivery systems, green chemistry, and the industrial applications of extremophiles. Specific Interactions and the Miscibility of Polymer Blends - Practical Guides For Predicting & Designing Miscible Polymer... Specific Interactions and the Miscibility of Polymer Blends - Practical Guides For Predicting & Designing Miscible Polymer Mixtures (Paperback)
Michael M. Coleman, John F. Graf, Paul C. Painter
R1,870 Discovery Miles 18 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book with software provides powerful tools for the analysis, prediction and creation of new polymer blends, an area of significant commercial potential. The R&D approaches and methods described in the book have attracted the interest of polymer R&D leaders in industry, and have been put into use in several major chemical companies. The companion set of computer programs speeds and facilitates work in this area. FROM THE AUTHORS' PREFACE: During the 1980's a steadily increasing number of compatible systems [polymer blends] have been reported. We believe that miscible mixtures will prove to be fairly common and the purpose of this book is to explore the circumstances in which single phase materials can be obtained. We will also describe a model for the phase behavior of these mixtures which we believe to have a predictive value, or be used as a practical guide to polymer miscibility. Our approach is based on the use of association models which have until recently been largely ignored in treating hydrogen bonding in polymer mixtures. They have most frequently been applied to mixtures of alcohols with simple hydrocarbons, where the equilibrium constants used to describe association have most frequently been determined by a fit to thermodynamic data (e.g., vapor pressures, heat of mixing). In our work we have sought to, first, adapt this approach to a description of the phase behavior of polymer mixtures; second, develop spectroscopic methods that provide an independent measurement of the equilibrium constants. Our purpose in this book is to explore and describe this approach and illustrate its broad utility. We address two overlapping yet different audiences. One would be primarily interested in the broad nature of this approach and the practical applications of a simple model. The second would be more interested in the derivations of the equations and some of the fundamental aspects of the spectroscopy of these systems. Accor

Interfacial Phenomena and Convection (Paperback): Alexander A. Nepomnyashchy, Manuel G. Velarde, Pierre Colinet Interfacial Phenomena and Convection (Paperback)
Alexander A. Nepomnyashchy, Manuel G. Velarde, Pierre Colinet
R1,851 Discovery Miles 18 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Benard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

Organic Pollutants - An Ecotoxicological Perspective, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): C.H. Walker Organic Pollutants - An Ecotoxicological Perspective, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
C.H. Walker
R1,858 Discovery Miles 18 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Difficult to measure accurately and deal with effectively, organic pollutants continue to be a major hazard in the environment. Significantly expanded, the second edition of Organic Pollutants: An Ecotoxicological Perspective describes the mechanistic basis of ecotoxicology, using major groups of pollutants as illustrative examples, and explores the problem of complex mixtures of chemicals. New in the Second Edition: Expanded coverage of complex pollution problems and the exploitation of recent scientific and technological developments to investigate them New chapters: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and their Environmental Impacts and Neurotoxicity and Behavioral Effects Additional information on biomarker approaches and new technologies, such as microarrays assays, developed to address complex pollution problems Tried-and-True Format Presents Updated Information Keeping the same format that made the first edition so popular, the text begins with coverage of the basic principles underpinning the environmental behavior and effects of organic pollutants. It then describes the properties and ecotoxicology of major pollutants, discusses some issues that arise after consideration of the material in the second part of the text, and explores future prospects. Mechanistic Approach Provides Basis for Development of New Strategies The book takes a bottom up approach, describing the mechanisms by which pollutants have harmful effects on living organisms and how these effects are translated into adverse changes at the population level. This mechanistic approach supplies the basis for development of new mechanistic biomarker assays, which in turn provide measures of toxic effect and not merely of exposure, and subsequently provide evidence of causality between pollutant levels and ecological changes.
