Cross-Border Cultural Production - Economic Runaway or Globalization? (Hardcover, New): Janet Wasko, Mary Erickson Cross-Border Cultural Production - Economic Runaway or Globalization? (Hardcover, New)
Janet Wasko, Mary Erickson
R2,880 Discovery Miles 28 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume addresses issues revolving around the production of mediated cultural products across borders. More specifically, the authors consider cross-border cultural production in the film and television industries and how it affects and is affected by media centers, and, more recently, established production locations. The film and television industries have long been recognized as playing important economic, political and cultural roles. And while it could be argued that, historically, these forms of cultural production often have been international endeavors, the choice of production sites has become an especially contentious issue during the last few decades as global production has expanded. While some factions, notably from the US film and television industries, refer to this issue as "runaway production," this book looks at this issue in a much broader look at the implications and consequences of this phenomenon. Basically, cross-border production involves the expansion of production away from traditional centers, whether to other countries or to other locations within the same country. Thus, this study covers a wide range of issues involving economic and political considerations, as well as creative and aesthetic decision-making. This is an important book for those in communication, international business, and economics.

Privacy in the New Media Age (Hardcover): Jon L Mills Privacy in the New Media Age (Hardcover)
Jon L Mills
R790 R698 Discovery Miles 6 980 Save R92 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Balancing personal dignity and first amendment concerns has become increasingly challenging in the new media age, when, for example, bloggers have no editors and perhaps no moral restraints. Unlimited and unrestricted internet speech has left thousands of victims in its wake, most of them silenced after the media cycle moves on. While the history of free speech and press has noble origins rooted in democratic theory, can society protect those who are harassed, stalked, and misrepresented online while maintaining a free society? Jon Mills, one of the nation's top provacy experts and advocates, maps out this complex problem. He discuses the need for forethought and creative remedies, looking at solutions already implemented by the European Union and comparing them to the antiquated provacy laws still extant in the United States. In his search for solutions, Mills closely examines an array of cases, some of them immediately recognizable beacuse of their notoriety and extensive media coverage. In a context of almost instantaneous global communications, where technology moves faster than the law, Mills traces the sharp edge between freedom of expression and the individual dignity that privacy preseves.

From Lying to Perjury - Linguistic and Legal Perspectives on Lies and Other Falsehoods (Hardcover): Laurence R. Horn From Lying to Perjury - Linguistic and Legal Perspectives on Lies and Other Falsehoods (Hardcover)
Laurence R. Horn
R3,952 Discovery Miles 39 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume provides new insights on lying and (intentionally) misleading in and out of the courtroom, a timely topic for scholarship and society. Not all deceptive statements are lies; not every lie under oath amounts to perjury-but what are the relevant criteria? Taxonomies of falsehood based on illocutionary force, utterance context and speakers' intentions have been debated by linguists, moral philosophers, social psychologists and cognitive scientists. Legal scholars have examined the boundary between actual perjury and garden-variety lies. The fourteen previously unpublished essays in this book apply theoretical and empirical tools to delineate the landscape of falsehood, half-truth, perjury, and verbal manipulation, including puffery, bluffing, and bullshit. The papers in this collection address conceptual and ethical aspects of lying vs. misleading and the correlation of this opposition with the Gricean pragmatic distinction between what is said and what is implicated. The questions of truth and lies addressed in this volume have long engaged the attention of scholars in linguistics, philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, organizational research, and the law, and researchers from all these fields will find this book of interest.

Theorising Culture - A Chinese Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Jinghe Han Theorising Culture - A Chinese Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jinghe Han
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks for an alternative perspective in analysing cultural phenomena to supplement the norm of Western dominant theorising and conceptualisation. It engages notions and concepts of culture developed by Chinese cultural theorists when addressing Chinese teachers' cross-cultural experiences in Australian school settings. This alternative approach acknowledges the fact that the generation and development of cultural theories is contextually based. Through the reciprocated theory-data examination, it enables the arguments: Chinese culture is rooted in its written language (hanzi) which makes culture inseparable from language teaching; the core of the culture is linked back to, streamlined with and continues from China's elongated history; this core has been consistently influential on these teachers' practices and the observable cultural shift in them could be non-genuine mimicry for survival. Document analysis witnesses the current political push for the culture's stability and continuity through the national education system across sectors. This book provides background information for teachers with cultural backgrounds different from their students', and draws on a bank of practice-based evidence to suggest ways to enhance teacher-student relationships in cross-cultural settings.

Populist Communication - Ideology, Performance, Mediation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Lone Sorensen Populist Communication - Ideology, Performance, Mediation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Lone Sorensen
R3,275 Discovery Miles 32 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How can we make sense of the current age of global political disruption when populism leaves norms overturned and the future form of democracy unpredictable? Political representatives are no longer elected for their experience and expertise but out of a desire for an ephemeral sense of authenticity, a direct connection to citizens, and the certainty of the truths they tell. But when populists project these ideas and claim to represent the citizenry, what is reality and what is strategic performance for the media? This conceptually rich book explores the performative strategies of the populist politicians who disrupt the normative order with acts of 'truth-telling'. It disentangles their complex use of media-from their appeal to news values through spectacular disruptions to sophisticated social media commentary-in repertoires of mediated performances. Based on vigorous empirical research in both established and transitional democracies, it develops a theoretical framework of populist communication in the new media environment.

Inherently Parallel Algorithms in Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications, Volume 8 (Hardcover): D. Butnariu, S.... Inherently Parallel Algorithms in Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications, Volume 8 (Hardcover)
D. Butnariu, S. Reich, Y. Censor
R5,166 Discovery Miles 51 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Haifa 2000 Workshop on "Inherently Parallel Algorithms for Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications" brought together top scientists in this area. The objective of the Workshop was to discuss, analyze and compare the latest developments in this fast growing field of applied mathematics and to identify topics of research which are of special interest for industrial applications and for further theoretical study.

Inherently parallel algorithms, that is, computational methods which are, by their mathematical nature, parallel, have been studied in various contexts for more than fifty years. However, it was only during the last decade that they have mostly proved their practical usefulness because new generations of computers made their implementation possible in order to solve complex feasibility and optimization problems involving huge amounts of data via parallel processing. These led to an accumulation of computational experience and theoretical information and opened new and challenging questions concerning the behavior of inherently parallel algorithms for feasibility and optimization, their convergence in new environments and in circumstances in which they were not considered before their stability and reliability. Several research groups all over the world focused on these questions and it was the general feeling among scientists involved in this effort that the time has come to survey the latest progress and convey a perspective for further development and concerted scientific investigations. Thus, the editors of this volume, with the support of the Israeli Academy for Sciences and Humanities, took the initiative of organizing a Workshop intended to bring together the leading scientists in the field. The current volume is the Proceedings of the Workshop representing the discussions, debates and communications that took place. Having all that information collected in a single book will provide mathematicians and engineers interested in the theoretical and practical aspects of the inherently parallel algorithms for feasibility and optimization with a tool for determining when, where and which algorithms in this class are fit for solving specific problems, how reliable they are, how they behave and how efficient they were in previous applications. Such a tool will allow software creators to choose ways of better implementing these methods by learning from existing experience.

The Great Recession in Fiction, Film, and Television - Twenty-First-Century Bust Culture (Hardcover): Kirk Boyle, Daniel... The Great Recession in Fiction, Film, and Television - Twenty-First-Century Bust Culture (Hardcover)
Kirk Boyle, Daniel Mrozowski; Contributions by Rebecca Barrett-Fox, Jesseca Cornelson, Sarah Domet, …
R3,253 Discovery Miles 32 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Great Recession in Fiction, Film, and Television: Twenty-First-Century Bust Culture sheds light on how imaginary works of fiction, film, and television reflect, refract, and respond to the recessionary times specific to the twenty-first century, a sustained period of economic crisis that has earned the title the "Great Recession." This collection takes as its focus "Bust Culture," a concept that refers to post-crash popular culture, specifically the kind mass produced by multinational corporations in the age of media conglomeration, which is inflected by diminishment, influenced by scarcity, and infused with anxiety. The multidisciplinary contributors collected here examine mass culture not typically included in discussions of the financial meltdown, from disaster films to reality TV hoarders, the horror genre to reactionary representations of women, Christian right radio to Batman, television characters of color to graphic novels and literary fiction. The collected essays treat our busted culture as a seismograph that registers the traumas of collapse, and locate their pop artifacts along a spectrum of ideological fantasies, social erasures, and profound fears inspired by the Great Recession. What they discover from these unlikely indicators of the recession is a mix of regressive, progressive, and bemused texts in need of critical translation.

Foreign Aid and Journalism in the Global South - A Mouthpiece for Truth (Hardcover): Jairo Lugo-Ocando Foreign Aid and Journalism in the Global South - A Mouthpiece for Truth (Hardcover)
Jairo Lugo-Ocando
R2,822 Discovery Miles 28 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Foreign Aid and Journalism in the Global South: A Mouthpiece for Truth examines the way in which foreign aid has shaped professional ideologies of journalism as part of systematic and orchestrated efforts since the beginning of the twentieth century to shape journalism as a political institution of the Global South. Foreign aid pushed for cultural convergence around a set of ideologies as a way of exporting ideology and expanding markets, reflecting the market society along with the expansion of U.S. power and culture across the globe. Jairo Lugo-Ocando argues that these policies were not confined to the Cold War and were not a purely modern phenomenon; today's journalism grammar was not invented in one place and spread to the rest, but was instead a forced colonial and post-colonial nation-building exercise that reflected both imposition and contestation to these attempts. As a result, Lugo-Ocando claims, journalism grammar and ideology differ between societies in the Global South, regardless of claims of universality. Scholars of journalism, international relations, Latin American Studies, and history will find this book particularly useful.

Sexual Violence Against Children in Britain Since 1965 - Trailing Abuse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Nick Basannavar Sexual Violence Against Children in Britain Since 1965 - Trailing Abuse (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Nick Basannavar
R3,570 Discovery Miles 35 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the changes and continuities in the ways in which sexual violence has been interpreted and represented in Britain since 1965. It explores the representational trail of the Moors murders and subsequent trial of 1966, the emergence of age of consent abolitionism in the 1970s, Cleveland's child sexual abuse crisis of 1987-8, and 2010 and 20s contemplations on the Jimmy Savile scandal. Harnessing research into popular media forms and a huge range of personal, political and professional records, Nick Basannavar carefully parses and illustrates the ways in which journalists, medical workers, politicians, lobbyists and other groups assembled and animated their narratives, revealing complex rhetorical and emotional processes. This book challenges problematic conceptual dichotomies such as silence/noise or ignorance/knowledge. It shows instead that although categories such as 'child sexual abuse' and 'paedophilia' may be relatively recent linguistic value-constructs, sexual violence against children has existed and been represented across historical moments, in changeable and challenging ways.

The Evolution of Popular Communication in Latin America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Ana Cristina Suzina The Evolution of Popular Communication in Latin America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Ana Cristina Suzina
R3,285 Discovery Miles 32 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together twelve contributions that trace the empirical-conceptual evolution of Popular Communication, associating it mainly with the context of inequalities in Latin America and with the creative and collective appropriation of communication and knowledge technologies as a strategy of resistance and hope for marginalized social groups. In this way, even while emphasizing the Latin American and even ancestral identity of this current of thought, this book positions it as an epistemology of the South capable of inspiring relevant reflections in an increasingly unequal and mediatized world. The volume's contributors include both early-career and more established professionals and natives of seven countries in Latin America. Their contributions reflect on the epistemological roots of Popular Communication, and how those roots give rise to a research method, a pedagogy, and a practice, from decolonial perspectives.

The Theory of Love - Ideals, Limits, Futures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Timothy Laurie, Hannah Stark The Theory of Love - Ideals, Limits, Futures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Timothy Laurie, Hannah Stark
R1,856 Discovery Miles 18 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Theory of Love: Ideals, Limits, Futures explores stories about love that recuperate a vision of intimate life as a resource for creating bonds beyond heterosexual coupledom. This book offers a variety of ethical frames through which to understand changing definitions of love, intimacy, and interdependency in the context of struggles for marriage equality and the increasing recognition of post-nuclear forms of kinship and care. It commits to these post-nuclear arrangements, while pushing beyond the false choice between a politics of collective action and the celebration of deeply personal and incommunicable pleasures. In exploring the vicissitudes of love across contemporary philosophy, politics, film, new media, and literature, The Theory of Love: Ideals, Limits, Futures develops an original post-sentimental concept of love as a way to explain emergent intimacies and affiliations beyond the binary couple. This book will appeal to academics and postgraduate students across the humanities and social sciences, as well as being a teachable resource for undergraduate students. It will appeal to a wide range of academics and students in literary and film studies, philosophy, gender and sexuality studies, and critical and cultural studies.

Multiculturalism as Multimodal Communication - A Semiotic Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Alin Olteanu Multiculturalism as Multimodal Communication - A Semiotic Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Alin Olteanu
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This highly readable book develops a numanistic, and specifically semiotic approach to multiculturalism. It reveals how semiotics provides fresh and valuable insights into multiculturalism: in contrast to the binary logic of dualistic philosophy, semiotic logic does not understand the value of truth in rigid terms of 'true' or 'false', 'right' or 'wrong' only. The value of truth resides in meaning, which is a dynamic, evolutionary phenomenon, rooted, nevertheless, in factuality. Drawing on recent developments in biosemiotics, the book presents a theoretical approach to multiculturalism, regarding the lives of people living in multicultural environments. Rather than analyzing political or economic phenomena, it offers a semiotic analysis of multiculturalism and discusses its educational implications. It also invites readers to regard learning as a phenomenon of ecological sign growth and to understand multiculturalism along the same lines. As such, it brings together the life and social sciences and the humanities in a unified perspective, in an approach fitting postmodernism. Developing a postmodern philosophy for contemporary non-experts, which allows distancing from political discourse in favor of a posthumanistic stand, where altruism is seen as an opportunity, not a threat, this book appeals to a wide readership, from scholars seeking state-of-the-art theories to general readers looking for a thought-provoking and enlightening read.

Communicating Across Cultures and Languages in the Health Care Setting - Voices of Care (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Claire Penn,... Communicating Across Cultures and Languages in the Health Care Setting - Voices of Care (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Claire Penn, Jennifer Watermeyer
R3,087 Discovery Miles 30 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a novel approach to understanding the complexities of communication in culturally and linguistically diverse health care contexts. It marks the culmination of two decades of research in South Africa, a context that has obvious application in a wider international climate given current globalization and migration trends. The authors draw from a large body of evidence based across different sites and illnesses, scrutinising both the language dynamics of intercultural health interactions and the perceptions and narratives of multiple participants. Including a range of theoretical, methodological and empirical considerations, the volume sheds light upon qualitative research methods and their application in the intercultural context. This book will be a valuable resource for health professionals, medical educators and language practitioners as well as students and scholars of discourse analysis and the medical humanities.
