From Fourier Analysis to Wavelets (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Jonas Gomes, Luiz Velho From Fourier Analysis to Wavelets (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Jonas Gomes, Luiz Velho
R2,634 R1,836 Discovery Miles 18 360 Save R798 (30%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text introduces the basic concepts of function spaces and operators, both from the continuous and discrete viewpoints. Fourier and Window Fourier Transforms are introduced and used as a guide to arrive at the concept of Wavelet transform. The fundamental aspects of multiresolution representation, and its importance to function discretization and to the construction of wavelets is also discussed. Emphasis is given on ideas and intuition, avoiding the heavy computations which are usually involved in the study of wavelets. Readers should have a basic knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and some familiarity with complex analysis. Basic knowledge of signal and image processing is desirable. This text originated from a set of notes in Portuguese that the authors wrote for a wavelet course on the Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium in 1997 at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro.

Interpolation and Sidon Sets for Compact Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Colin Graham, Kathryn E. Hare Interpolation and Sidon Sets for Compact Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Colin Graham, Kathryn E. Hare
R3,367 Discovery Miles 33 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding special sets of integers was classically of interest to Hadamard, Zygmund and others, and continues to be of interest today. This book is a modern treatment of the subject of interpolation and Sidon sets. It is a unique book, aimed at both new and experienced researchers. In particular, this is the only book in English which features a complete treatment of the Pisier-Bourgain results on Sidon sets, many of which were originally in French, in hard to access publications. Applications of the P-B results, due to Pisier, Bourgain, Ramsey, and the authors are included. The book introduces the reader to a wealth of methods important in mathematics today: topological, probabilistic, algebraic, combinatoric and analytic. It prepares students to perform research in the area and provides both exercises and open problems. The book also provides direction to the literature for topics it does not fully cover. The book is self-contained, with appendices covering results that are required, but not necessarily in the pre-requisite background of a student ready to choose an area for research in harmonic analysis.

The Beltrami Equation - A Geometric Approach (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Vladimir Gutlyanskii, Vladimir Ryazanov, Uri Srebro, Eduard... The Beltrami Equation - A Geometric Approach (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Vladimir Gutlyanskii, Vladimir Ryazanov, Uri Srebro, Eduard Yakubov
R4,045 Discovery Miles 40 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is devoted to the Beltrami equations that play a significant role in Geometry, Analysis and Physics and, in particular, in the study of quasiconformal mappings and their generalizations, Riemann surfaces, Kleinian groups, Teichmuller spaces, Clifford analysis, meromorphic functions, low dimensional topology, holomorphic motions, complex dynamics, potential theory, electrostatics, magnetostatics, hydrodynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics.

The purpose of this book is to present the recent developments in the theory of Beltrami equations; especiallythose concerning degenerate and alternating Beltrami equations. The authors study a wide circle of problems like convergence, existence, uniqueness, representation, removal of singularities, local distortion estimates and boundary behaviorof solutions to the Beltrami equations. The monographcontains a number of new types of criteria in the given problems, particularly new integral conditions for the existence of regular solutions to the Beltrami equations that turned out to be not only sufficient but also necessary.

The most important feature of this bookconcerns the unified geometric approach based on the modulus method that is effectively applied to solving the mentioned problems. Moreover, it is characteristic for the book application of many new concepts as strong ring solutions, tangent dilatations, weakly flat and strongly accessible boundaries, functions of finite mean oscillations and new integral conditions that make possible to realize a more deep and refined analysis of problems related to the Beltrami equations. Mastering and using these new tools alsogives essential advantages for the reader in the research of modern problems in many other domains. Every mathematics graduate library should have a copy of this book. "

This volume consists of twenty peer-reviewed papers from the special session on pseudodifferential operators and the special session on generalized functions and asymptotics at the Eighth Congress of ISAAC held at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia in Moscow on August 22-27, 2011. The category of papers on pseudo-differential operators contains such topics as elliptic operators assigned to diffeomorphisms of smooth manifolds, analysis on singular manifolds with edges, heat kernels and Green functions of sub-Laplacians on the Heisenberg group and Lie groups with more complexities than but closely related to the Heisenberg group, Lp-boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on the torus, and pseudo-differential operators related to time-frequency analysis. The second group of papers contains various classes of distributions and algebras of generalized functions with applications in linear and nonlinear differential equations, initial value problems and boundary value problems, stochastic and Malliavin-type differential equations. This second group of papers are related to the third collection of papers via the setting of Colombeau-type spaces and algebras in which microlocal analysis is developed by means of techniques in asymptotics. The volume contains the synergies of the three areas treated and is a useful complement to volumes 155, 164, 172, 189, 205 and 213 published in the same series in, respectively, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Application of Holomorphic Functions in Two and Higher Dimensions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Klaus Gurlebeck, Klaus Habetha,... Application of Holomorphic Functions in Two and Higher Dimensions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Klaus Gurlebeck, Klaus Habetha, Wolfgang Sproessig
R3,840 Discovery Miles 38 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents applications of hypercomplex analysis to boundary value and initial-boundary value problems from various areas of mathematical physics. Given that quaternion and Clifford analysis offer natural and intelligent ways to enter into higher dimensions, it starts with quaternion and Clifford versions of complex function theory including series expansions with Appell polynomials, as well as Taylor and Laurent series. Several necessary function spaces are introduced, and an operator calculus based on modifications of the Dirac, Cauchy-Fueter, and Teodorescu operators and different decompositions of quaternion Hilbert spaces are proved. Finally, hypercomplex Fourier transforms are studied in detail. All this is then applied to first-order partial differential equations such as the Maxwell equations, the Carleman-Bers-Vekua system, the Schroedinger equation, and the Beltrami equation. The higher-order equations start with Riccati-type equations. Further topics include spatial fluid flow problems, image and multi-channel processing, image diffusion, linear scale invariant filtering, and others. One of the highlights is the derivation of the three-dimensional Kolosov-Mushkelishvili formulas in linear elasticity. Throughout the book the authors endeavor to present historical references and important personalities. The book is intended for a wide audience in the mathematical and engineering sciences and is accessible to readers with a basic grasp of real, complex, and functional analysis.

This monograph is a unified presentation of several theories of finding explicit formulas for heat kernels for both elliptic and sub-elliptic operators. These kernels are important in the theory of parabolic operators because they describe the distribution of heat on a given manifold as well as evolution phenomena and diffusion processes.
Heat Kernels for Elliptic and Sub-elliptic Operators is an ideal reference for graduate students, researchers in pure and applied mathematics, and theoretical physicists interested in understanding different ways of approaching evolution operators.

Hyperbolic Manifolds and Kleinian Groups (Hardcover): Katsuhiko Matsuzaki, Masahiko Taniguchi Hyperbolic Manifolds and Kleinian Groups (Hardcover)
Katsuhiko Matsuzaki, Masahiko Taniguchi
R5,289 Discovery Miles 52 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Kleinian group is a discrete subgroup of the isometry group of hyperbolic 3-space, which is also regarded as a subgroup of Moebius transformations in the complex plane. The present book is a comprehensive guide to theories of Kleinian groups from the viewpoints of hyperbolic geometry and complex analysis. After 1960, Ahlfors and Bers were the leading researchers of Kleinian groups and helped it to become an active area of complex analysis as a branch of Teichmuller theory. Later, Thurston brought a revolution to this area with his profound investigation of hyperbolic manifolds, and at the same time complex dynamical approach was strongly developed by Sullivan. This book provides fundamental results and important theorems which are needed for access to the frontiers of the theory from a modern viewpoint.

Hypercomplex analysis is the extension of complex analysis to higher dimensions where the concept of a holomorphic function is substituted by the concept of a monogenic function. In recent decades this theory has come to the forefront of higher dimensional analysis. There are several approaches to this: quaternionic analysis which merely uses quaternions, Clifford analysis which relies on Clifford algebras, and generalizations of complex variables to higher dimensions such as split-complex variables. This book includes a selection of papers presented at the session on quaternionic and hypercomplex analysis at the ISAAC conference 2013 in Krakow, Poland. The topics covered represent new perspectives and current trends in hypercomplex analysis and applications to mathematical physics, image analysis and processing, and mechanics.

Schur Functions, Operator Colligations and Reproducing Kernel Pontryagin Spaces (Hardcover): Daniel Alpay, Etc, James Rovnyak,... Schur Functions, Operator Colligations and Reproducing Kernel Pontryagin Spaces (Hardcover)
Daniel Alpay, Etc, James Rovnyak, Hendrik de Snoo, Aad Dijksma
R2,395 Discovery Miles 23 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Generalized Schur functions are scalar- or operator-valued holomorphic functions such that certain associated kernels have a finite number of negative squares. This book develops the realization theory of such functions as characteristic functions of coisometric, isometric, and unitary colligations whose state spaces are reproducing kernel Pontryagin spaces. This provides a modern system theory setting for the relationship between invariant subspaces and factorization, operator models, Krein-Langer factorizations, and other topics. The book is intended for students and researchers in mathematics and engineering. An introductory chapter supplies background material, including reproducing kernel Pontryagin spaces, complementary spaces in the sense of de Branges, and a key result on defining operators as closures of linear relations. The presentation is self-contained and streamlined so that the indefinite case is handled completely parallel to the definite case.

R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book, intended to commemorate the work of Paul Dirac, highlights new developments in the main directions of Clifford analysis. Just as complex analysis is based on the algebra of the complex numbers, Clifford analysis is based on the geometric Clifford algebras. Many methods and theorems from complex analysis generalize to higher dimensions in various ways. However, many new features emerge in the process, and much of this work is still in its infancy. Some of the leading mathematicians working in this field have contributed to this book in conjunction with "Clifford Analysis and Related Topics: a conference in honor of Paul A.M. Dirac," which was held at Florida State University, Tallahassee, on December 15-17, 2014. The content reflects talks given at the conference, as well as contributions from mathematicians who were invited but were unable to attend. Hence much of the mathematics presented here is not only highly topical, but also cannot be found elsewhere in print. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mathematicians and physicists working in these areas, as well as students seeking to catch up on the latest developments.

Elegant Chaos: Algebraically Simple Chaotic Flows (Hardcover): Julien Clinton Sprott Elegant Chaos: Algebraically Simple Chaotic Flows (Hardcover)
Julien Clinton Sprott
R2,677 Discovery Miles 26 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This heavily illustrated book collects in one source most of the mathematically simple systems of differential equations whose solutions are chaotic. It includes the historically important systems of van der Pol, Duffing, Ueda, Lorenz, Rssler, and many others, but it goes on to show that there are many other systems that are simpler and more elegant. Many of these systems have been only recently discovered and are not widely known. Most cases include plots of the attractor and calculations of the spectra of Lyapunov exponents. Some important cases include graphs showing the route to chaos. The book includes many cases not previously published as well as examples of simple electronic circuits that exhibit chaos.

No existing book thus far focuses on mathematically elegant chaotic systems. This book should therefore be of interest to chaos researchers looking for simple systems to use in their studies, to instructors who want examples to teach and motivate students, and to students doing independent study.

Complex Kleinian Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Angel Cano, Juan Pablo Navarrete, Jose Seade Complex Kleinian Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Angel Cano, Juan Pablo Navarrete, Jose Seade
R1,435 Discovery Miles 14 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph lays down the foundations of the theory of complex Kleinian groups, a newly born area of mathematics whose origin traces back to the work of Riemann, Poincare, Picard and many others. Kleinian groups are, classically, discrete groups of conformal automorphisms of the Riemann sphere, and these can be regarded too as being groups of holomorphic automorphisms of the complex projective line CP1. When going into higher dimensions, there is a dichotomy: Should we look at conformal automorphisms of the n-sphere?, or should we look at holomorphic automorphisms of higher dimensional complex projective spaces? These two theories are different in higher dimensions. In the first case we are talking about groups of isometries of real hyperbolic spaces, an area of mathematics with a long-standing tradition. In the second case we are talking about an area of mathematics that still is in its childhood, and this is the focus of study in this monograph. This brings together several important areas of mathematics, as for instance classical Kleinian group actions, complex hyperbolic geometry, chrystallographic groups and the uniformization problem for complex manifolds. R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book features papers presented during a special session on algebra, functional analysis, complex analysis, and pluripotential theory. Research articles focus on topics such as slow convergence, spectral expansion, holomorphic extension, m-subharmonic functions, pseudo-Galilean group, involutive algebra, Log-integrable measurable functions, Gibbs measures, harmonic and analytic functions, local automorphisms, Lie algebras, and Leibniz algebras. Many of the papers address the theory of harmonic functions, and the book includes a number of extensive survey papers. Graduate and researchers interested in functional analysis, complex analysis, operator algebras and non-associative algebras will find this book relevant to their studies. The special session was part of the second USA-Uzbekistan Conference on Analysis and Mathematical Physics held on August 8-12, 2017 at Urgench State University (Uzbekistan). The conference encouraged communication and future collaboration among U.S. mathematicians and their counterparts in Uzbekistan and other countries. Main themes included algebra and functional analysis, dynamical systems, mathematical physics and partial differential equations, probability theory and mathematical statistics, and pluripotential theory. A number of significant, recently established results were disseminated at the conference's scheduled plenary talks, while invited talks presented a broad spectrum of findings in several sessions. Based on a different session from the conference, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems is also published in the Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics Series.

Nevanlinna Theory in Several Complex Variables and Diophantine Approximation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Junjiro Noguchi, Joerg... Nevanlinna Theory in Several Complex Variables and Diophantine Approximation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Junjiro Noguchi, Joerg Winkelmann
R3,866 Discovery Miles 38 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive account of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory and its relations with Diophantine approximation theory for graduate students and interested researchers. This book with nine chapters systematically describes Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic maps between algebraic varieties or complex spaces, building up from the classical theory of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with full proofs in Chap. 1 to the current state of research. Chapter 2 presents the First Main Theorem for coherent ideal sheaves in a very general form. With the preparation of plurisubharmonic functions, how the theory to be generalized in a higher dimension is described. In Chap. 3 the Second Main Theorem for differentiably non-degenerate meromorphic maps by Griffiths and others is proved as a prototype of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory. Establishing such a Second Main Theorem for entire curves in general complex algebraic varieties is a wide-open problem. In Chap. 4, the Cartan-Nochka Second Main Theorem in the linear projective case and the Logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai Theorem in the case of general algebraic varieties are proved. Then the theory of entire curves in semi-abelian varieties, including the Second Main Theorem of Noguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi, is dealt with in full details in Chap. 6. For that purpose Chap. 5 is devoted to the notion of semi-abelian varieties. The result leads to a number of applications. With these results, the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problems are discussed in Chap. 7. In the last two chapters Diophantine approximation theory is dealt with from the viewpoint of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory, and the Lang-Vojta conjecture is confirmed in some cases. In Chap. 8 the theory over function fields is discussed. Finally, in Chap. 9, the theorems of Roth, Schmidt, Faltings, and Vojta over number fields are presented and formulated in view of Nevanlinna theory with results motivated by those in Chaps. 4, 6, and 7.

R2,651 R1,886 Discovery Miles 18 860 Save R765 (29%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The monograph is devoted to integral representations for holomorphic functions in several complex variables, such as Bochner-Martinelli, Cauchy-Fantappie, Koppelman, multidimensional logarithmic residue etc., and their boundary properties. The applications considered are problems of analytic continuation of functions from the boundary of a bounded domain in C^n. In contrast to the well-known Hartogs-Bochner theorem, this book investigates functions with the one-dimensional property of holomorphic extension along complex lines, and includes the problems of receiving multidimensional boundary analogs of the Morera theorem. This book is a valuable resource for specialists in complex analysis, theoretical physics, as well as graduate and postgraduate students with an understanding of standard university courses in complex, real and functional analysis, as well as algebra and geometry.

The purpose of the corona workshop was to consider the corona problem in both one and several complex variables, both in the context of function theory and harmonic analysis as well as the context of operator theory and functional analysis. It was held in June 2012 at the Fields Institute in Toronto, and attended by about fifty mathematicians. This volume validates and commemorates the workshop, and records some of the ideas that were developed within. The corona problem dates back to 1941. It has exerted a powerful influence over mathematical analysis for nearly 75 years. There is material to help bring people up to speed in the latest ideas of the subject, as well as historical material to provide background. Particularly noteworthy is a history of the corona problem, authored by the five organizers, that provides a unique glimpse at how the problem and its many different solutions have developed. There has never been a meeting of this kind, and there has never been a volume of this kind. Mathematicians-both veterans and newcomers-will benefit from reading this book. This volume makes a unique contribution to the analysis literature and will be a valuable part of the canon for many years to come.

Harmonic Analysis and Boundary Value Problems in the Complex Domain (Hardcover): Mkhitar M. Djrbashian Harmonic Analysis and Boundary Value Problems in the Complex Domain (Hardcover)
Mkhitar M. Djrbashian
R2,407 Discovery Miles 24 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The present book is a valuable continuation of the large cycle of the author's investigations on harmonic analysis in the complex domain. For certain sets of segments in the complex domain, the elegant and explicit apparatus of the biorthogonal Fourier type systems (basis systems in the Rieszian sense), is constructed by purely analytic methods of classical function theory. This is done using the remarkable asymptotic properties of the Mittag-Leffler type entire functions and new interpolation theorems for the Banach spaces of entire functions. It is especially noteworthy that at the same time the constructed basis systems are eigenfunctions for quite non-ordinary boundary value problems in the complex domain for differential equations of fractional order. Such boundary value problems, the solutions of which are carried through to a logical conclusion, i.e. up to the theorems of expansions into eigenfunctions, are considered in the book for the first time.

From Holomorphic Functions to Complex Manifolds (Hardcover): Klaus Fritzsche, Hans Grauert From Holomorphic Functions to Complex Manifolds (Hardcover)
Klaus Fritzsche, Hans Grauert
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is an introduction to the theory of complex manifolds. The authors¿ intent is to familiarize the reader with the most important branches and methods in complex analysis of several variables and to do this as simply as possible. Therefore, the abstract concepts involving sheaves, coherence, and higher-dimensional cohomology have been completely avoided. Only elementary methods such as power series, holomorphic vector bundles, and one-dimensional cocycles are used. Nevertheless, deep results can be proved. The book can be used as a first introduction to several complex variables as well as a reference for the expert.
