Political races in the United States rely heavily on highly paid
political consultants. In Building a Business of Politics, Adam
Sheingate traces the history of political consultants from its
origins in the publicity experts and pollsters of the 1920s and
1930s to the strategists and media specialists of the 1970s who
transformed political campaigns into a highly profitable business.
Today, consultants command a hefty fee from politicians as they
turn campaign cash from special interest groups and wealthy donors
into the advertisements, polls, and direct mail solicitations
characteristic of modern campaigns. The implications of this system
on the state of American democracy are significant: a professional
political class stands between the voters and those who claim to
represent them. Building a Business of Politics is both a
definitive account of the consulting profession and a powerful
reinterpretation of how political professionals reshaped American
democracy in the modern era.

The "gig economy" is a relatively recent term coined to describe a
range of working arrangements that have previously been denoted as
precarious, flexible and contingent. These may include casual
workers, temporary agency workers, those on zero-hours contracts
and dependent contractors. This books seeks to get behind the
contemporary buzz surrounding the term and provide some theoretical
and empirical analysis of the gig work phenomenon. The book seeks
to assess more critically some of the rhetorical claims made about
gig work and to provide a balanced appraisal of the ramifications
for individuals, employers and the economy and society in general
of an increasingly insecure workforce. The regulatory framework, in
particular, is examined and is shown to have lagged behind crucial
developments in the gig economy, with many labour laws still
historically rooted to the notion that a worker has to be an
employee to be covered by employment rights. The authors show that
in many respects there is nothing new about the gig economy and
that its growth in recent years was in some sense predictable.
Perhaps its real significance, they argue, is its potential as a
business model to "gig-ize" other business operations far beyond
relatively low-skilled work. When combined with automation and
digitalization, the gig economy presents us with an opportunity to
re-evalute our understanding of the nature of work.
In The World's Newest Profession Christopher McKenna offers a
history of management consulting in the twentieth century. Although
management consulting may not yet be a recognized profession, the
leading consulting firms have been advising and reshaping the
largest organizations in the world since the 1920s. This
groundbreaking study details how the elite consulting firms,
including McKinsey & Company and Booz Allen & Hamilton,
expanded after US regulatory changes during the 1930s, how they
changed giant corporations, nonprofits, and the state during the
1950s, and why consultants became so influential in the global
economy after 1960. As they grew in number, consultants would
introduce organizations to 'corporate culture' and
'decentralization' but they faced vilification for their role in
the Enron crisis and for legitimating corporate blunders. Through
detailed case studies based on unprecedented access to internal
files and personal interviews, The World's Newest Profession
explores how management consultants came to be so influential
within our culture and explains exactly what consultants really do
in the global economy.
Outsourcing has become one of the key restructuring tools for
companies seeking to boost their growth and business performance.
As the outsourcing phenomenon has mushroomed, so a range of
academic studies have sought to define and describe a unifying
theoretical model. Outsourcing: Design, Process and Performance
draws upon managerial, economic, sociological, historical and
psychological perspectives to bring about a new understanding of
how outsourcing design and the outsourcing process feed into the
performance of firms. Blending empirical insights from a range of
international cases and large-scale statistical tests with existing
theoretical perspectives, the author argues that a negative
curvilinear relationship exists between outsourcing and firm
performance. A critical analysis of current outsourcing strategies,
together with a discussion of future trends, offers a new agenda
for academic researchers and business managers alike.
This dynamic and innovative new core textbook examines and explores
the theoretical underpinnings of this complex and fascinating
subject and provides students with the practical skills required to
become a successful management consultant. Rooted in change
management theory, it explores the role of the internal and
external change agents and their impact on organizational
development and transformation. The experience and highly-regarded
expertise of the author team ensures that the text is built on
solid academic foundations, while six of the chapters feature
extended 'Consultancy in Action' sections penned by practitioners
who provide invaluable insights into the reality of working as a
management consultant in a wide range of contexts. Written in a
lively and accessible style, the authors carefully guide the
student through each stage of consulting, presenting a wealth of
experiential learning exercises and activities to help hone skills
and develop a consultant's mindset. This is an essential textbook
for MBA, postgraduate and undergraduate students studying modules
on Management Consulting. It is also a useful supplementary text
for modules on change management. Accompanying online resources for
