Educational Leadership for Social Justice and Improving High-Needs Schools - Findings from 10 Years of International... Educational Leadership for Social Justice and Improving High-Needs Schools - Findings from 10 Years of International Collaboration (Hardcover)
Bruce G Barnett, Philip A. Woods
R3,008 R2,679 Discovery Miles 26 790 Save R329 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the International School Leadership Development Network (ISLDN), this book is a compilation of the work conducted by network scholars. This volume is the first comprehensive overview of the studies conducted by ISLDN members engaged in examining how social justice leaders and leaders of high-needs schools address the social conditions, learning experiences, and performance of their students. Other international school leadership research consortia have emerged in the 21st century; however, the ISLDN is the second longest operating project, after the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP). Since its creation in 2010, ISLDN scholars have delivered papers at a variety of international conferences and shared findings in research publications, including books and special issues of journals. Until now, ISLDN research findings have been disseminated separately for the project's two strands: (a) social justice leadership and (b) leadership in underperforming high-needs schools. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to document the history and evolution of the ISLDN and to provide descriptions and reflections of the project's research findings, methodologies, and collaborative processes across the two strands. This volume captures studies of school leaders from 19 countries representing six continents - Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America. The authors examine important external and internal contextual factors influencing schools in different cultural settings and provide insights about the values and practices of social justice leaders working in high-needs school settings. Numerous practical strategies are provided for school leaders working in schools with similar conditions. The concluding chapter by the co-editors synthesizes the structural factors, personal beliefs and values, and contextualized change management strategies that shape school leaders' actions aimed at ensuring the best learning outcomes for their students. Besides capturing the range of findings emerging from various ISLDN studies conducted over the past decade, several chapters critically examine the project's current contributions to the field. Authors suggest broadening the dissemination of our findings to increase the visibility of the project, expanding the research methods beyond qualitative interviews, incorporating studies from non-Anglophone countries, and augmenting the scope of our analyses and research focus. These researchers' journeys also reveal the obstacles to and benefits of engaging in these types of international collaborative research ventures.

ManagingPerformance Strategically in Education Agencies - A Guidebook for Strategic Performance Management (SPM) (Paperback):... ManagingPerformance Strategically in Education Agencies - A Guidebook for Strategic Performance Management (SPM) (Paperback)
Allison Layland, Sam Redding
R1,354 Discovery Miles 13 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book gives an education leader a practical path to organizational effectiveness, shared sense of direction, and clear focus on outcomes for students. Setting a clear direction, structuring personnel for the greatest productivity, engaging everyone in meaningful work, tracking organizational performance, and encouraging innovation are fundamental concerns for every kind of education organization-schools, districts, state agencies included. Yet, education leaders struggle to give due attention to these organizational matters while also tackling the challenges of meeting the needs of their students. They are searching for a path leading to both organizational productivity and excellence in learning for students, a path that enlists the passions and efforts of all personnel. Strategic Performance Management (SPM) integrates strategic planning with performance management into a seamless process by which an education organization develops and operationalizes a strategic direction. This direction goes beyond the basic elements of vision, mission, values, goals, and strategies to include careful analysis of the functions performed by the organization, its units, and its positions (roles) to facilitate effective placement, assignment, and training of personnel. SPM emphasizes planning through strategic thinking that enables the organization to make critical adjustments as needs and context change. It provides the flexibility to act in times of crisis. Most of all, it gets everyone moving in the same direction, aimed at goals for students.

Mastering the Moneyed Mind, Volume I - The Causes, Culprits, and Context of our Money Troubles (Paperback): Christopher Bayer Mastering the Moneyed Mind, Volume I - The Causes, Culprits, and Context of our Money Troubles (Paperback)
Christopher Bayer
R613 R548 Discovery Miles 5 480 Save R65 (11%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Causes, Culprits, and Context of Our Money Troubles is the first book in a series about the psychology of money by Dr. Christopher Bayer, the Wall Street Psychologist. Informed by more than 30 years of research in the areas of economics/finance and psychology, Dr. Bayer explores the history of our relationship with money-specifically the role morality, and the concept of "virtue," has played in that history, and the wealth versus money dichotomy. Filled with tales and exemplifications, the book introduces readers, pseudonymously, to sample patients of money -mind imbalances, such as the "11 million-dollar man" who becomes corrupted by money's influence, that unbalances their internal gyroscope (internal moral compass). It draws readers to examine past- and present-day corruptions derived from money's influence and compels them to examine concepts and theories from great economists of yore (e.g., Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and J.M. Keynes) to create a theoretical foundation for what the author calls a Gyroscope methodology. As a foundational tool in the series, this book invites readers to consider, for themselves, stories of mass mind-control perpetrated by marketing mavens who utilize (and perhaps manipulate) insights from behavioral psychology to generate rank materialism, manifested in ever-increasing consumption, palatable to the public.

The Bottomless Line-Important Lessons They Did Not Teach You in Business School is the second book in a series about the psychology of money by Dr. Christopher A. Bayer, the Wall Street Psychologist. This book builds on the key concepts in the first volume, to draw the reader's attention to the "dark side" of the business world. Structured in a way that enables readers to examine contemporary examples of willful co-optation, misuse, and misinterpretation of old texts and ideas, run-of-the-mill corruption, and dangerous groupthink, the author examines the personal and broad- scale financial troubles generated by reckless financial misunderstandings. The book is an exploration of how direct and indirect psychological conditioning eliminates morality from decision making in the world of finance. It provides evidence that ties systemic corruption on Wall Street to the lessons of the storied Milgram experiments (obedience, effects of perceived hierarchy and status, immoral actions-"just following orders"). In the end, readers are led to the "big takeaway": the need to cultivate and maintain a core of character in order to weather any ethical storm. It also summarizes the history of financial psychopathy, details the rise and fall of a few notorious Wall Street perpetrators-from the brass at Enron to the infamous Bernard Madoff-and examines how their hardwired psychopathy leaves them bereft of moral qualities necessary to build a functioning and responsive moral compass of Gyroscope.

Body and Mind-The Effects of Money Problems is the third book in a series about the psychology of money by Dr. Christopher Bayer, the Wall Street Psychologist. This volume advances readers into an examination of the effect of money problems on the body and mind. It presents research that supports solutions offered throughout the series to fix maladjustments of the mind and highlights the importance of developing a sound grasp of the mind-body connection to ensure there is an unbreakable bond at all levels. Strategies for developing stress-free solutions for avoiding depression, in addition to detailed data that point to high recovery rates from depression, offer readers practical, tangible tools for managing real-life, money problems. Pointers on how to avoid The Triggers That Produce Multiple Wounds play a critical role in helping readers to equip their gyroscope (internal compass) to cope with stress. Moneystrewn professions, such as finance, are littered with those who want it all-many of them high-functioning addicts to stress, alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, and the accumulation of money in its pure state. This book offers plenty of stories of excess and closes with a meaningful invitation to the reader: Envision Your Own Eden and the Good Life-words of encouragement to help them consider how much money is enough.

The Routledge Companion to Risk, Crisis and Security in Business (Paperback): Kurt J Engemann The Routledge Companion to Risk, Crisis and Security in Business (Paperback)
Kurt J Engemann
R1,842 Discovery Miles 18 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Aware that a single crisis event can devastate their business, managers must be prepared for the worst from an expansive array of threats. The Routledge Companion to Risk, Crisis and Security in Business comprises a professional and scholarly collection of work in this critical field. Risks come in many varieties, and there is a growing concern for organizations to respond to the challenge. Businesses can be severely impacted by natural and man-made disasters including: floods, earthquakes, tsunami, environmental threats, terrorism, supply chain risks, pandemics, and white-collar crime. An organization's resilience is dependent not only on their own system security and infrastructure, but also on the wider infrastructure providing health and safety, utilities, transportation, and communication. Developments in risk security and management knowledge offer a path towards resilience and recovery through effective leadership in crisis situations. The growing body of knowledge in research and methodologies is a basis for decisions to safeguard people and assets, and to ensure the survivability of an organization from a crisis. Not only can businesses become more secure through risk management, but an effective program can also facilitate innovation and afford new opportunities. With chapters written by an international selection of leading experts, this book fills a crucial gap in our current knowledge of risk, crisis and security in business by exploring a broad spectrum of topics in the field. Edited by a globally-recognized expert on risk, this book is a vital reference for researchers, professionals and students with an interest in current scholarship in this expanding discipline.

Organized Uncertainty - Designing a World of Risk Management (Hardcover): Michael Power Organized Uncertainty - Designing a World of Risk Management (Hardcover)
Michael Power
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the mid-1990s risk management has undergone a dramatic expansion in its reach and significance, being transformed from an aspect of management control to become a benchmark of good governance for banks, hospitals, schools, charities and many other organizations. Numerous standards for risk management practice have been produced by a variety of transnational organizations. While these many designs and blueprints are accompanied by ideals of enterprise, value production, and good governance, it is argued that the rise of risk management has also coincided with an intensification of auditing and control processes. The legalization and bureacratization of organizational life has increased because risk management has created new demands for proof and evidence of action. In turn, these demands have generated new risks to reputation.
In short, this important book traces the rise of the managerial concept of risk and the different logics and values which underpin it, showing that it has much less to do with real dangers and opportunities than might be thought, and more to do with organizational accountability and legitimacy.

R4,508 Discovery Miles 45 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Decision analysis has become widely recognized as an important process for translating science into management actions. With climate change and other systemic threats as driving forces in creating environmental and engineering problems, there is a great need for understanding decision making frameworks through a case-study based approach. Management of environmental and engineering projects is often complicated and multidisciplinary in scope and nature, thus issues that arise can be difficult to solve analytically. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis: Case Studies in Engineering and the Environment provides detailed description of MCDA methods and tools and illustrates their applications through case studies focused on sustainability and system engineering applications. New in the Second Edition: Addresses current and emerging environmental and engineering problems Includes seven new case studies to illustrate different management situations applicable at the international level Builds on real case studies from recent and relevant environmental and engineering management experience Describes advanced MCDA techniques and extensions used by practitioners Provides corresponding decision models implemented using the DECERNS software package Gives a more holistic approach to teaching MCDA methodology with a focus on sustainable solutions and adoption of new technologies, including nanotechnology and synthetic biology Given the novelty and inherent applicability of this decision-making framework to the environmental and engineering fields, a greater number of teaching tools for this topic need to be made available. This book provides those teaching tools, covering the breadth of the applications of MCDA methodologies with clear explanations of the MCDA process. The case studies are implemented in the DECERNS software package, allowing readers to experiment and explore and to understand the full process by which environmental managers assess these problems. This book is a great resource for professionals and students seeking to learn decision analysis techniques and apply similar frameworks to environmental and engineering projects

Improving Learning Environments - School Discipline and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Richard... Improving Learning Environments - School Discipline and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Richard Arum, Melissa Velez
R1,456 Discovery Miles 14 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Improving Learning Environments" provides the first systematic comparative cross-national study of school disciplinary climates. In this volume, leading international social science researchers explore nine national case studies to identify the institutional determinants of variation in school discipline, the possible links between school environments and student achievement, as well as the implications of these findings for understanding social inequality.
As the book demonstrates, a better understanding of school discipline is essential to the formation of effective educational policies. Ultimately, to improve a school's ability to contribute to youth socialization and student internalization of positive social norms and values, any changes in school discipline must not only be responsive to behavior problems but should also work to enhance the legitimacy and moral authority of school actors.

Conservative Options Trading - Hedging Strategies, Cash Cows, and Loss Recovery (Paperback): Michael C. Thomsett Conservative Options Trading - Hedging Strategies, Cash Cows, and Loss Recovery (Paperback)

R694 R612 Discovery Miles 6 120 Save R82 (12%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The world of options is considered high-risk by many. At its original options treading in the modern era began in the early 1970s when the first listed calls were offered on a short list of companies; a few years later, put trading was added. Since this time, options trading has become available on most companies on the large public exchanges. However, the high-risk reputation of options has persisted through the years, even as dozens of new and often conservative strategies have been introduced. Today, the best use of options is not to speculate on price movement, but to hedge market risk in equity portfolios. Many strategies can combine hedging with income, establishing advantageous circumstances for risk-averse traders. It is possible to apply several strategies to reduce risk and in some instances, to eliminate market risk completely. This book examines the many ways this can be accomplished, based on options for three highly-rated companies. These are qualified as a first step by exceptionally attractive fundamental attributes and trends: Higher than average dividend yield with dividend increases over at least 10 years; a range of moderate price/earnings ratios each year; growing revenue, earnings and net return; and level or declining long-term debt as a percentage of total capitalization.

This book explains and demonstrates the concept of momentum in chart analysis, which is of great interest to technical analysts. It includes complete explanations of overbought and oversold, where momentum fits in the broader science of technical analysis, and the importance of moving average crossover. Five major momentum oscillators are explained in depth: relative strength index, MACD, rate of change, stochastics, and Bollinger Bands. Finally, the book provides trading guidance based on momentum, involving coordination of oscillators with other indicators, reversal, and continuation signals. Momentum powerfully identifies the strength and speed of price movement. Through the use of index calculations, momentum is effective when used as a confirming indicator for other signals found in price, volume, or moving averages. Often overlooked by traders focused solely on price reversals or continuation signals, momentum provides a context to price behavior and to the price trend, and can vastly improves the timing of both entry and exit of trades.
