Tropical Dermatology (Hardcover): Roberto Arenas Tropical Dermatology (Hardcover)
Roberto Arenas
R3,418 Discovery Miles 34 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tropical diseases are not merely a group of nosologic diseases indigenous to the intertropical zone. Many are diseases of poor public health originating from poverty, ignorance, and population upheaval. Tropical dermatoses represent a public health problem in 127 countries with a population of 3 billion people who do not have access to health care. Currently, infectious and parasitic diseases along with emergent diseases such as AIDS, or old re-emergent, drug-resistant diseases constitute the majority of tropical dermatoses. This handbook presents the geographical distribution, etiology, clinical picture, and treatment of dermatoses in the tropics.

It fills a void in the resources available to researchers and practitioners in forensic hair examination by providing photographic archetypes for the microscopic characteristics of human hair and the variates of the characteristics seen in forensic examinations, including curl; color; pigment distribution and density; cortical fusi; and ovoid bodies. These illustrations provide a uniform basis for describing the characteristics and their variations for forensic professionals in differing geographical areas. The documentation of hair characteristics using the scoring system outlined in this atlas allows researchers to develop data regarding the frequency of characteristics within the hairs of one or more individuals and the assessment of whether certain hair characteristics are co-dependent.

Teun Boekhout, Eveline Gueho-Kellermann, Peter Mayser, Aristea Velegraki
R4,390 Discovery Miles 43 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It has been known for many years that the Malassezia yeasts are associated with a n- ber of different human diseases ranging from pityriasis versicolor to seborrhoeic d- matitis. However the evolving history of their taxonomy and pathogenicity, and the management of the diseases that they cause has been a long, and often diffcult, jou- ney. Their fastidious growth requirements defed the initial attempts to culture these organisms on laboratory media and their true identifcation and the relationship between different species only became apparent with the application of modern molecular techniques. Likewise although recognised in the 19th century as potential causes of human infection, piecing together the complex and, in certain cases, still uncertain relationships to different human diseases has taken many years. Recognised initially as causes of infection of the skin, they are now known to be superfcial c- mensals as well as potential causes of infections in domestic animals and more serious human conditions such as fungemia. They have also been implicated in the pathog- esis of allergic and other infammatory diseases. Given this complex, yet fascinating, history it seems appropriate to bring together current thought on these yeasts, their structure and function and their association with both human and animal disease states. This book provides such a view of the genus Malassezia and the diseases caused by its members.

Water-filtered Infrared A (wIRA) Irradiation - From Research to Clinical Settings (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Peter Vaupel Water-filtered Infrared A (wIRA) Irradiation - From Research to Clinical Settings (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Peter Vaupel
R1,674 Discovery Miles 16 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this open access book is to provide a unique, timely, critical and comprehensive compilation of more than 30 years of robust international experimental and clinical research related to the basic science and therapeutic application of water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA) and hyperthermia in oncology, psychiatry (depression), musculoskeletal disorders, dermatology, infectiology, and surgery. This is an internationally absolutely unique attempt which publication is timely and of great interest in medical as well as in natural sciences. The aim is to enhance communication and advance the use of heat therapy for patient benefit, and to generate an environment in which anyone with an interest in hyperthermia can discuss, collaborate, network, and share events and resources. Productive dialogue and discussion among scientists and practitioners on issues relating to hyperthermia therapy is essential, especially relating to thermal transmission by water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA). The specificity and advantage of this technology is its tolerance by tissue, and its penetration of up to 3 cm allows the delivery of high heat dosages that are relevant across multiple clinical indications. Currently, wIRA is being applied in Austria, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK and the USA. The authors' hope is that its use will increase in these countries, and also expand into others. This book will be an invaluable tool for oncologists, surgeons, dermatologists as well as physiotherapists.

Clinician's Guide to Mycosis Fungoides (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Pooya Khan Mohammad Beigi Clinician's Guide to Mycosis Fungoides (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Pooya Khan Mohammad Beigi
R2,762 Discovery Miles 27 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Complete with dozens of color clinical photos to aid readers in diagnosis and treatment, this book includes TNM staging, description of the histopathology, and a step-by-step guide through the diagnosis of the disease. It is the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, generally affecting the skin, though sometimes progressing internally over time. However, there is very little comprehensive information on this subject for dermatologists, dermatopathologists, and oncologists seeking deeper insight into this lymphoma in one all-inclusive text. Clinician's Guide to Mycosis Fungoides meets this need, covering the history, categories of disorder, molecular analysis, etiology, epidemiology, effect on body systems, disorder symptoms, and treatment. Additionally, the various recommended treatments of mycosis fungoides are explained, using clinical research and case studies as guidance in part stemming from the author's extensive research on the topic.

Computer Vision Techniques for the Diagnosis of Skin Cancer (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Jacob Scharcanski, M. Emre Celebi Computer Vision Techniques for the Diagnosis of Skin Cancer (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Jacob Scharcanski, M. Emre Celebi
R2,903 Discovery Miles 29 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The goal of this volume is to summarize the state-of-the-art in the utilization of computer vision techniques in the diagnosis of skin cancer. Malignant melanoma is one of the most rapidly increasing cancers in the world. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma can be cured with a simple excision if detected early. In recent years, dermoscopy has proved valuable in visualizing the morphological structures in pigmented lesions. However, it has also been shown that dermoscopy is difficult to learn and subjective. Newer technologies such as infrared imaging, multispectral imaging, and confocal microscopy, have recently come to the forefront in providing greater diagnostic accuracy. These imaging technologies presented in this book can serve as an adjunct to physicians and provide automated skin cancer screening. Although computerized techniques cannot as yet provide a definitive diagnosis, they can be used to improve biopsy decision-making as well as early melanoma detection, especially for patients with multiple atypical nevi.

Mycobacterial Skin Diseases (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): Marwali Harahap Mycobacterial Skin Diseases (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
Marwali Harahap
R4,434 Discovery Miles 44 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We have endeavoured in this book to bring the reader up-to-date information, which will contribute to an enhanced ability to diagnose and treat mycobacterial skin diseases. This volume is mainly concerned with conveying to dermatologists, microbiologists, immunologists, dermatologists in training, registrars in other specialties and interested family practitioners, a concise appraisal of some recent developments in the various aspects of myco bacterial skin diseases. The chapters dealing with bacteriology, pathology and immunology have been planned to appear at the beginning of the book to provide the necessary conceptual framework for the section on clinical science, which deals with the variety of clinical states. The value of the clinical descriptions is vastly enhanced by a careful reading of the earlier chapters. The contributing authors have been most cooperative in making this, the tenth volume in the New Clinical Applications in Dermatology series, an excellent treatise. I thank each of them for their superb contributions. If this book stimulates and encourages a greater interest in, and a better understanding of, mycobacterial skin diseases, and enables physicians to serve more effectively those who suffer, the time and effort spent to produce it will be amply rewarded. PROFESSOR MARWALI HARAHAP IX SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD It was with great pleasure that I heard of Professor Harahap's wish to produce a volume on mycobacterial skin diseases."

Skin Disorders in Vulnerable Populations - Causes, Impacts and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Fingani Annie Mphande Skin Disorders in Vulnerable Populations - Causes, Impacts and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Fingani Annie Mphande
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on neglected skin diseases and conditions in resource-poor countries through the lens of livelihoods. These diseases, when neglected, not only affect the skin, but also joint movement and physical appearance, severely influencing the lives and livelihoods of individuals and families in vulnerable communities. The book explores why neglected skin diseases thrive in resource-poor countries, and considers how this cycle might be broken by looking at the impact on livelihoods and access to healthcare in affected communities. The research is shaped by three guiding questions: Firstly, why have some measures been successful in one part of a population and not the other? Secondly, what is unique about vulnerable populations in various parts of the world? And thirdly, can the cycle of debilitating skin diseases and conditions in resource-poor countries be broken? In addressing these concerns, the book excavates past and present efforts in public health measures to combat these diseases, considers the impact of culture and livelihoods, and reviews some of the milestones in disease elimination and eradication. This book will be an indispensable source for health service planners, administrators and practitioners working with vulnerable populations, as well as graduate students and researchers in public health.

Pharmacology of Itch (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Alan Cowan, Gil Yosipovitch Pharmacology of Itch (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Alan Cowan, Gil Yosipovitch
R8,656 R6,862 Discovery Miles 68 620 Save R1,794 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Basic research on the pharmacology of itch has exploded in the wake of two very influential papers that were published in Nature (2007) and Science (2009). Long overlooked as a milder form of pain, itching has rapidly gained a new appreciation in both research and clinical communities because of its complexity and its negative effects on the quality of life of the distressed patients. Like pain, not all itches are the same. Unlike pain, there are no standard drugs equivalent to aspirin and morphine. Epidemiological studies emphasize the high incidence and economic costs of itch (pruritus). It is the most prevalent symptom of a wide variety of allergic and inflammatory skin conditions (e.g., psoriasis, atopic dermatitis), is associated with several systemic diseases (e.g., chronic kidney and liver disease), and occurs in patients undergoing hemodialysis, spinal administration of opioids, and in those suffering from AIDS. The reader will learn about the multiple pathways for itch and their interactions with pain. The relationship between these closely related, yet distinct sensory phenomena, will be emphasized. Both itch and pain use several common molecules to send signals to the brain. Thus, drugs that have been, and are being, developed as analgesics may also attenuate intractable itch. This has been an exciting and very necessary turn of events since traditional H-1 receptor antagonists are ineffective in blocking the pruritus associated with kidney failure and cholestasis. The clinical chapters will provide insights into contemporary treatment regimens for pruritus in different human scenarios.

Dermal Drug Selection and Development - An Industrial Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Lionel Trottet, Howard Maibach Dermal Drug Selection and Development - An Industrial Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Lionel Trottet, Howard Maibach
R5,516 Discovery Miles 55 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors show how the pharmaceutical industry faces the development of dermal drugs and provide the only book of its kind that describes how the industry develops and selects dermal drugs, complete with the challenges and opportunities of the field. Delivery of drugs through the skin has been an attractive and challenging area for research, and advances in modern technologies have resulted in a larger number of drugs being delivered transdermally, including conventional hydrophobic small molecule drugs, hydrophilic drugs and macromolecules. Offering the perspective from the industrial side of selection and development of drugs, the primary audience is geared towards the pharmaceutical industry but can also offer valuable information to clinicians, compounding pharmacists, and similarly pharmacy students. Dermal Drug Selection and Development covers the scientific gaps that exist in terms of dermal pharmacokinetics and the resulting uncertainty by clinicians when choosing a drug candidate.
