Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology (Hardcover, 5th edition): Richard Ashton, Barbara Leppard Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology (Hardcover, 5th edition)
Richard Ashton, Barbara Leppard
R5,398 Discovery Miles 53 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS IN DERMATOLOGY Fifth Edition RICHARD ASHTON, MA, MD, FRCP, Consultant Dermatologist, Lighthouse Clinic, Isle of Wight, UK, formerly Consultant Dermatologist to the Royal Navy BARBARA LEPPARD, DM, FRCP, Retired Consultant Dermatologist, Southampton University NHS Trust, UK The ethos of this bestselling text is that however much or little you know about skin disease you can always arrive at the right diagnosis. The secret is to examine the surface of the rash or skin lesion which will help you classify the clinical features correctly - colour, surface features, type of lesion, border and how long it has been present. Algorithms throughout each chapter give the differential diagnosis for the features you have elicited. Accompanying clinical photographs and clear descriptions of the conditions will enable you to check whether you are right or not. If your choice seems unlikely, any conditions that could be confused with the one you selected are listed along the base of the algorithm to help you compare diagnoses so that you can get to the right answer. We hope this new edition - enhanced with specific instructions on treatment - will be the only quick clinical reference you will ever need for dermatology diagnoses. With over 1000 illustrations.

A separate section is devoted to Disorders of Hyperpigmentation like melasma, exogenous ochronosis, Schamberg's disease, etc. This is followed by a section on Disorders of Hypopigmentation like leprosy, vitiligo, and idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis and then a section of inflammatory papulosquamous disorders. Another novel addition to this book is a devoted section on onychoscopy. A focused chapter on onychoscopy of nail psoriasis and onychomycosis and neoplastic nail disorders is added. The section on Trichoscopy is also updated. The last section describes some unique disorders such as granulomas, benign and malignant neoplasms of skin and dermoscopy of vascular lesions of skin, and dermoscopy of infections and infestations. With contributions from over 40 international experts in the field of skin biology, the book presents the central role of the skin barrier to health and disease reviewing; The skin's anatomy and physiology, with focus on the stratum corneum as a barrier to foreign substances. Dermal absorption, cutaneous metabolism, and epidermal transporters. Altered barriers, racial skin types, aged skin, photoaged skin, cosmetics and skin sensitization. Modern approaches to drug delivery across the skin barrier, including liposomes, microneedle technology, active and passive transdermal delivery. Examples and case studies of chemical toxicity after topical exposures ranging from arsenic, metal working fluids, bromine, jet fuel, sulfur mustard and including the emerging area of nanomaterial penetration. Advances in Melanoma, An Issue of Hematology/Oncology Clinics, Volume 23-3 (Hardcover): David E. Fisher Advances in Melanoma, An Issue of Hematology/Oncology Clinics, Volume 23-3 (Hardcover)
David E. Fisher
R1,688 Discovery Miles 16 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The field of melanoma biology has experienced a remarkable surge in recent years, owing to progress which has ranged from the most basic laboratory/preclinical discoveries to clinical developments that have begun to transform the management and prognosis for at least certain melanoma patients. Among the key areas that have contributed to this progress are studies relating to signaling and transcriptional pathways that regulate control over differentiation and survival of the melanocyte lineage. The identification of recurring activating mutations in specific signaling factors (B-RAF, N-Ras, c-KIT), amplification of other melanoma oncogenes (MITF, NEDD9), and the crucial recognition that certain of these genomic events occur within melanomas arising with specific clinical features (eg mucosal or acral origin) have led to clear recognition that melanoma is indeed "many different diseases.? While the various subclasses of melanoma may share common features, such as profound invasive and metastatic propensity, it is also likely that sharply focused therapeutic strategies may exploit the functionally critical molecular engines, which distinguish these subclasses. Certain strategies focus upon the immunogenicity and striking clinical opportunities afforded by immune modulation, while others focus more directly on tumor-specific targeting. This issue brings together some of the leaders who have contributed significant insights from basic melanoma biology to progress in the clinic.
