Bruce R. Smoller, Franco Rongioletti
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is a pleasure to introduce this new book, Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional, and Deposition Disease, edited by two of my friends and respected colleagues, Franco Rongioletti and Bruce R. Smoller. In fact, I was very ent- siastic when I learned that they were preparing this work. Although endocrine, metabolic, w, and deposition diseases are regularly included in general textbooks of dermatology and d- matopathology, one gains the general impression that these topics receive little emphasis and are mainly included for completeness. The prospect of having all of this information in one volume, lovingly described and detailed by experts in the feld, should be of great interest not only to dermatologists, pathologists, and dermatopathologists but also to internists and en- crinologists, who may well gain a different perspective on these disorders. As a derma- pathologist, I am also pleased that this project has been organized and undertaken by two distinguished authorities in cutaneous pathology. This assures a close integration of histo- thology and other laboratory techniques with the clinical aspects of these disorders, which will make it possible - perhaps for the frst time - to view these conditions in a truly comprehensive way. So I invite you, the reader, to open this volume and dig in; be prepared for an eye-catching, intellectually stimulating, and ultimately rewarding experience! Charlottesville, VA James W. Clinical Dermatology 5e (Paperback, 5th Edition): R Weller Clinical Dermatology 5e (Paperback, 5th Edition)
R Weller
R1,514 Discovery Miles 15 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The best-selling text has been completely revised and revitalised in this fifth edition, with the authors once again encouraging general practitioners, medical students, general physicians and early stage dermatology specialist trainees and interns to relish the unique challenge of diagnosing and treating skin conditions. Clinical Dermatology, 5th edition contains over 400 high quality pictures and diagrams combined with colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it teaches. The book has established a reputation as a way of learning and as an accessible guide to the subject for the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the maze that too often lies between the presenting skin complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The authors have skilfully crafted an easily read text with enough detail to clarify the subject, but not enough to obscure it. This fifth edition contains new chapters on non-invasive physical treatment and dermoscopy, and new material on cosmetic dermatology, surgical dermatology, the skin and the psyche, and dermatoses of non-Caucasian skin. The text throughout the book has been updated in line with developments in the science and practice of dermatology...brilliantly succeeds in enticing you to look further. The writing is clear, and the joint British-American authorship avoids any parochial views. From a review of a previous edition in BMJ ...a very well-presented book...an excellent aid for teaching. I recommend this book highly to individuals and departments. From a review of a previous edition in J Derm Treatment provides a good overview of the structure and function of the skin as well as a good foundation for learning dermatology well organized and includes a chapter dedicated to skin signs of systemic disease which is not covered in the other dermatology primers. Clinical Cases in Skin of Color - Adnexal, Inflammation, Infections, and Pigmentary Disorders (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Porcia... Clinical Cases in Skin of Color - Adnexal, Inflammation, Infections, and Pigmentary Disorders (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Porcia B. Love, Roopal V Kundu
R1,837 Discovery Miles 18 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book will identify the top dermatological conditions for patients with skin of color and provide essential features which contrast these conditions in darker skin types. The reader will be able to formulate informed treatment regimens for patients with skin of color. The book will also provide clinical pearls to guide decision making, as well as important cultural beliefs that must be considered in order to provide optimal care to patients with skin of color. Clinical cases are a key component in modern medical education, assisting the trainee or recertifying clinician to work through unusual cases using best practice techniques. Dermatology is an important discipline in this regard since it is a highly visual subject requiring the reader to describe often very subtle differences in the presentation of patients and define accurately the diagnostic and management criteria to base their clinical decision-making on. By the year 2050, people with skin of color (including Africans, African Americans, Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics) will represent more than half of the U.S. population. There is now an increasing demand for dermatologic treatments in patients with skin of color, as well as an accompanying need for education and training in this quickly expanding market. Skin of Color is a key topic within dermatology as specific conditions can be harder to diagnose effectively in darker skin, and their treatment can be compromised by this. Conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis may be more difficult to diagnose in darker skin. There are various other conditions that can provide a challenge in management, including postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, scarring, alopecias, and pseudofolliculitis barbae. If these skin disorders are not diagnosed and treated properly, the initial lesions can become darker as they heal, and the darker spots can last for years in some cases.

Hair Restoration Surgery in Asians (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Damkerng Pathomvanich, Kenichiro Imagawa Hair Restoration Surgery in Asians (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Damkerng Pathomvanich, Kenichiro Imagawa
R4,016 Discovery Miles 40 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Hair transplantation is in demand worldwide, but because Asian hair tends to be more sparse and coarse than Caucasian hair, transplantation procedures need to be adapted to Asian patients. This book, exclusively devoted to Asian hair, is a complete and comprehensive text written by a group of authors sharing their experience in their specialized fields of hair restoration. Included are many practical tips as well as chapters on regional transplantation such as eyebrows, eyelashes, sideburns, beards, and mustaches, in addition to the usual scalp hair restoration. With its many illustrations, the book gives readers a complete knowledge of hair restoration surgery and provides a quick, easy-to-use reference on Asian hair and the differences in patients' demands. With an influx of new physicians in this challenging field of medicine, further education and training are imperative and must be available to provide a high standard of medical practice. This compilation meets that objective and ultimately makes the valuable contribution of restoring patients' self-confidence.

Leprosy - A Practical Guide (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Enrico Nunzi, Cesare Massone Leprosy - A Practical Guide (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Enrico Nunzi, Cesare Massone
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It is one of the most disabling disorders in developing countries, with a peak incidence in the tropics and subtropics. With globalization, leprosy is now increasingly spreading to the western world. The impact of this infectious disorder is relevant for the human community due to its transmissible nature, and also important for the individual because of its debilitating consequences. Leprosy is a multifaceted systemic disease with variable presentation and clinical picture. Its identification may therefore not be straightforward, especially outside endemic areas. During its chronic course, leprosy is characterized by acute phases during which there may be exacerbation of symptoms and rapid progression of damage. When leprosy affects the eyes, nerves, and kidneys, it can represent a true medical emergency. The aim of this book is to make the reader familiar with the characteristic signs of disease, including abnormalities of the skin, nerves, eyes, hands, feet, testes, and bone. Early identification of the disease is critical to prevent patient disability and establish appropriate therapy. Emphasis will be given to the current diagnostic tools to identify and quantify the organ damage, including electrophysiology, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, laboratory tests, and histopathology. Specific topics such as leprosy and pregnancy, leprosy and HIV infection, epidemiology, and leprosy control will also be covered.

Shedding Light on Indoor Tanning (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Carolyn J. Heckman, Sharon L. Manne Shedding Light on Indoor Tanning (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Carolyn J. Heckman, Sharon L. Manne
R4,011 Discovery Miles 40 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since the industrialization and urbanization of the Western workforce, tanned skin has been perceived increasingly as attractive and fashionable for naturally light-skinned individuals. However, in addition to causing tanning, photo-aging, and other health effects, ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a well-known carcinogen. Despite wide-spread awareness of UV risks, tanning has become increasingly popular in several Western countries including the USA. While millions of individuals tan indoors each day, relatively little is known about this phenomenon. This book fills that gap by providing an overview of indoor tanning, reasons for its popularity, its risks including skin cancers, and the public health context surrounding the behavior. We have invited some of the preeminent experts in the field to summarize the existing scientific literature for each of the chapters. Shedding Light on Indoor Tanning is an up-to-date and comprehensive book that provides a unique and essential overview of the most significant current issues related to indoor tanning for scientists, educators, students, clinicians, and the general public interested in dermatology, aesthetic trends, skin care, and skin cancer.

Dermal Replacements in General, Burn, and Plastic Surgery - Tissue Engineering in Clinical Practice (Paperback, Softcover... Dermal Replacements in General, Burn, and Plastic Surgery - Tissue Engineering in Clinical Practice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013)
Lars-Peter Kamolz, David Lumenta
R3,455 Discovery Miles 34 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The skin is the largest human organ system. Loss of skin integrity due to injury or illness results in a substantial physiologic imbalance and ultimately in severe disability or death. The most common cause of significant skin loss is thermal injury, followed by trauma and chronic ulcerations. Over the past decades extraordinary advances have been made in the understanding of cellular and molecular processes of wound healing and the pathobiology of chronic wounds. This knowledge has led to wound care innovations that facilitate more rapid closure of wounds with better functional and aesthetic outcome. A sensible and resource-saving utilization of these innovative technologies requires a broad knowledge of these processes and innovations. This book intends to give an overview about today's wound care developments in tissue engineering and skin replacement. It presents a variety of indications and diversities of clinical applications to help the surgeon select a specific procedure for each clinical situation.

Teun Boekhout, Eveline Gueho-Kellermann, Peter Mayser, Aristea Velegraki
R2,889 Discovery Miles 28 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It has been known for many years that the Malassezia yeasts are associated with a n- ber of different human diseases ranging from pityriasis versicolor to seborrhoeic d- matitis. However the evolving history of their taxonomy and pathogenicity, and the management of the diseases that they cause has been a long, and often diffcult, jou- ney. Their fastidious growth requirements defed the initial attempts to culture these organisms on laboratory media and their true identifcation and the relationship between different species only became apparent with the application of modern molecular techniques. Likewise although recognised in the 19th century as potential causes of human infection, piecing together the complex and, in certain cases, still uncertain relationships to different human diseases has taken many years. Recognised initially as causes of infection of the skin, they are now known to be superfcial c- mensals as well as potential causes of infections in domestic animals and more serious human conditions such as fungemia. They have also been implicated in the pathog- esis of allergic and other infammatory diseases. Given this complex, yet fascinating, history it seems appropriate to bring together current thought on these yeasts, their structure and function and their association with both human and animal disease states. This book provides such a view of the genus Malassezia and the diseases caused by its members.

Cytokines as Potential Therapeutic Targets for Inflammatory Skin Diseases (Paperback, 2006 ed.): R. Numerof, Charles A.... Cytokines as Potential Therapeutic Targets for Inflammatory Skin Diseases (Paperback, 2006 ed.)
R. Numerof, Charles A. Dinarello, Khusru Asadullah
R3,517 Discovery Miles 35 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cytokines and cytokine receptors remain an area of great interest for the development of targeted therapies for cutaneous inflammatory diseases. Anti-TNF therapeutics have proven to be effective in the treatment of psoriasis, and clinical investigations have now begun for other cytokine-directed therapies, such as those targeting IFN-g, IL-12p40, and IL-18. In addition to therapeutics that target cytokines directly, strategies that target cytokine signaling pathways are in development. This book summarizes the findings of the 56th International Workshop of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation that focused on "Cytokines as Potential Therapeutic Targets for Inflammatory Skin Diseases".

Practical Skin Pathology (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Diya F. Mutasim Practical Skin Pathology (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Diya F. Mutasim
R3,392 Discovery Miles 33 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This engaging new text teaches students, residents, and practitioners of all ages how to use insights from both pathologists and dermatologists to improve their comprehension of skin disorders. It is meant to bridge the gap between dermatology and dermapathology and explores the questions that practitioners have that fall between the two subjects. What is a dermatologist to do with a pathology report that has a histological rather than a clinical diagnosis? What is to be done with old names of disorders that some clinicians still use? Why do some disorders have many names, and which is better and why? These and dozens of other questions are answered in Practical Skin Pathology, the only book of its kind to address both the clinical education of each disease as well as the pathology findings. Authored by a leader in clinical dermatology, dermatopathology, and skin immunology, Practical Skin Pathology is written for dermatologists, dermatology residents, and dermatopathologists. Addressing such questions as whether to accept a differential diagnosis from a dermatopathologist rather than a specific diagnosis and when, to how to help a pathologists give a dermatologist the best possible interpretation of a biopsy, this quick reference includes color illustrations, images, and tables to better assist the physician in answering these common questions and concerns.

Animal Models of T Cell-Mediated Skin Diseases (Paperback, 2005 ed.): T Zollner, Harald Renz, Khusru Asadullah Animal Models of T Cell-Mediated Skin Diseases (Paperback, 2005 ed.)

Pharmaceutical companies are spending increasing amounts of money on drug discovery and development. Nevertheless, attrition rates in clinical development are still very high, and up to 90% of new compounds fail in clinical phase I - III trials, which is partially due to lack of clinical efficacy. This indicates a strong need for highly predictive in vitro and in vivo models. The "50th International Workshop of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation" focussed on "Animal Models of T Cell-Mediated Skin Diseases". Such animal models should have impact not only on inflammatory dermatoses but also on other inflammatory disorders due to their model character. The current volume summarises recent advances in animal research that are important for anti-inflammatory drug discovery.

The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in fection, participation in the regulation of body temperature and water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably, the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs are to be found in the literature ; on the other hand, from the large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.
