R3,547 R3,222 Discovery Miles 32 220 Save R325 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nanoscience in Dermatology covers one of the two fastest growing areas within dermatological science, nanoscience and nanotechnology in dermatology. Recently, great progress has been made in the research and development of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials related to various applications in medicine and, in general, the life sciences. There is increasing enthusiasm for nanotechnology applications in dermatology (drug delivery, diagnostics, therapeutics, imaging, sensors, etc.) for understanding skin biology, improving early detection and treatment of skin diseases, and in the design and optimization of cosmetics. Light sensitive nanoparticles have recently been explored, opening a new era for the combined applications of light with nanotechnology, also called photonanodermatology. However, concerns have been raised regarding the adverse effects of intentional and unintentional nanoparticle exposure and their toxicity. Written by experts working in these exciting fields, this book extensively covers nanotechnology applications, together with the fundamentals and toxicity aspects. It not only addresses current applications of nanotechnology, but also discusses future trends of these ever-growing and rapidly changing fields, providing scientists and dermatologists with a clear understanding of the advantages and challenges of nanotechnology in skin medicine.

Histamine Intolerance - Histamine and Seasickness (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Reinhart Jarisch Histamine Intolerance - Histamine and Seasickness (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Reinhart Jarisch
R1,772 Discovery Miles 17 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Histamine is an important mediator of allergic diseases, but knowledge of histamine as a cause of numerous non-allergic symptoms and signs is limited. This book offers wide-ranging coverage of histamine intolerance. There is extensive background discussion of the origin of histamine, its content in food and alcoholic beverages and intolerance to red wine. Diagnosis of histamine intolerance is explained and the various symptoms of histamine intolerance are clearly described. Subsequent chapters cover the relation of histamine to a wide variety of conditions, including drug intolerance, atopic dermatitis, seasickness and osteoporosis. This book will prove of value in clinical practice by facilitating differential diagnosis, which is by no means straightforward given the multiplicity of symptoms of histamine intolerance and by assisting in the selection of therapeutic measures.

Human hair is the subject of a remarkably wide range of scientific investigations. Its chemical and physical properties are of importance to the cosmetics industry, forensic scientists and to biomedical researchers. The fifth edition of this book confirms its position as the definitive monograph on the subject. Previous editions were recognized as "concise and thorough" (Journal of the American Chemical Society), "an invaluable resource" (Canadian Forensic Science Society Journal), and "highly recommended" (Textile Research Journal). Chemical and Physical Behavior of Human Hair is a teaching guide and reference volume for cosmetic chemists and other scientists in the hair products industry, academic researchers studying hair and hair growth, textile scientists and forensic specialists. Features of the Fifth Edition: Recent advances in the classification and characterization of the different proteins and genes in IF and keratin associated proteins in human hair are described. The mechanism and incidence of hair growth and loss and hair density vs. age of males & females are described for Asians, Caucasians and Africans in different scalp regions. Details of hair surface lipids and cuticle membranes provide a better understanding of the surface and organization of the CMC and its involvement in stress strain is presented. Recent evidence demonstrates a more bilateral structure in curly hair and a more concentric arrangement of different cortical proteins in straighter hair. SNPs involved in hair form (curl and coarseness) and pigmentation and genes in alopecia and hair abnormalities are described. The latest biosynthetic scheme for hair pigments and structures for these and the different response of red versus brown-black pigments to photodegradation is described. A new method for curvature on 2,400 persons from different countries and groups is used to assign curvature throughout this book. Additional data for age and effects on diameter, ellipticity, elastic modulus, break stress and other parameters are presented with much larger data sets featuring statistical analyses. Hair conditioning, strength, breakage, split ends, flyaway, shine, combing ease, body, style retention, manageability and feel parameters are defined and described. A new section of different life stages by age groups considering collective and individual changes in hair fiber properties with age and how these affect assembly properties.

Microskin Grafting for Vitiligo (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009): Devendra K. Gupta Microskin Grafting for Vitiligo (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009)
Devendra K. Gupta
R3,234 Discovery Miles 32 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book has been written to assist not only postgraduate students, but also int- ested dermatologists, general practitioners, and surgeons. During the last two decades, various surgical therapies have been used in the tre- ment of stable refractory vitiligo, but none of them became very popular because of their intrinsic drawbacks, and thus could not be adopted as a standard procedure. There has always been a need for a technique that gives best results without complications. The commonly used surgical procedures for the treatment of vitiligo have been narrated in short and their characteristic drawbacks have been pointed out. The c- lular graft technique is costly, requires a good laboratory and infrastructure, and except for being able to cover a wider vitiliginous area, the ultimate results are no better than tissue grafting technique. I used the small skin particles prepared from ultra thin or thin split thickness skin graft, the so called "microskin graft," in the tre- ment of vitiligo effectively with good expansion ratio, i.e., small donor skin to treat big vitiliginous area. This procedure covers the bene? t of cellular and tissue graft, but without their inherent drawbacks. The microskin graft technique has been illustrated with minimum necessary text to explain the steps. This technique is very simple to learn and execute. It is extremely 2 cost effective and can treat very large area up to 1,500 cm in an operative session.

Light-Based Therapies for Skin of Color (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009): Elma Baron Light-Based Therapies for Skin of Color (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009)
Elma Baron
R3,501 Discovery Miles 35 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Light-based therapies have been a major component of dermatologic practice. Historically, these treatment modalities have been mainly tailored to the treatment of patients with light skin. Principles governing use of light therapies in skin of color are less defined. However, there is a tremendous need to understand the benefits and limitations of these therapeutic options for dark-skinned patients as well. Demographic data in the United States alone indicate that the population and recipients of health care are rapidly changing with regard to skin phototype. Physicians who are involved in the delivery of care for patients with cutaneous problems that can be addressed by light treatments need to be able to fully understand the mechanisms, applications, risks, efficacy, adverse events, and other pertinent issues in considering treatment options for their patients with pigmented skin.
