Skin Disease in Organ Transplantation (Hardcover): Clark C. Otley, Thomas Stasko Skin Disease in Organ Transplantation (Hardcover)
Clark C. Otley, Thomas Stasko
R5,799 Discovery Miles 57 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Skin disease is a serious long-term problem for the recipients of solid organ transplants. The potent systemic immunosuppression therapy necessary to sustain a life-saving solid organ transplant is associated with many adverse cutaneous effects, including significantly increased rates of cutaneous malignancies, difficult-to-treat cutaneous infections, and cutaneous adverse manifestations of multiple medications. This book is the first scholarly compilation of the knowledge base surrounding the care of solid organ transplant recipients with dermatologic diseases. Supplemented with dozens of full-color photographs, this work brings together decades of knowledge into a cohesive format and establishes transplant dermatology as an important subspecialty within the field of dermatology and transplant medicine. Skin Disease in Organ Transplantation is an outstanding resource for transplant providers and dermatologists to determine the optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the difficult problems of cutaneous disease in organ transplant recipients.

Baldness - A Social History (Paperback): Kerry Segrave Baldness - A Social History (Paperback)
Kerry Segrave
R914 R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Save R234 (26%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Each year, men spend an enormous amount of time and money searching for a cure to male pattern baldness. Numerous psychological assessments indicate that the reasons behind their futile efforts are sound: attitudes toward bald men are overwhelmingly negative.

From the first torturous attempts at hair implants early in this century to the faddish, well-hyped drug treatments of today, the extremes to which men have gone in an effort to regrow hair or cover their bald scalps are examined in this work. The various causes for baldness advanced by credible members of the medical establishment over the years are detailed, as well as instances of outright quackery prompted by numerous individuals and companies. Wigs, weaving, transplants, flaps and scalp reduction are among the techniques explained.

Adriana Motta, Luis Fernando Gonzalez, Gonzalo Garcia, Jennifer Guzman, Lorena Prada, …
R6,749 Discovery Miles 67 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dermatology is the science responsible for the study of the skin, mucous membranes (oral and genital) and cutaneous appendages, while dermatopathology focuses on its microscopic study. Although the two fields are closely related, in many cases the identification of dermatological diseases is mainly clinical and depends on the physician's ability and experience. The purpose of this atlas, which collects over 900 clinical and histological photographs in high resolution, is to illustrate and describe the most frequent skin diseases on the basis of clinical cases. Offering a complete guide to the etiology, epidemiology, clinical features, histologic findings and diagnosis of the main skin diseases divided into three subgroups (inflammatory, infectious, or tumoral), it represents an invaluable resource for all medical students, residents, clinicians, and investigators learning dermatology.

Manual of Nail Disease and Surgery (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed): R. Baran Manual of Nail Disease and Surgery (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
R. Baran
R3,743 Discovery Miles 37 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is intended as a concise and practical guide to the treatment of nail problems through medical and surgical means. It is aimed at the general practitioner, dermatologist and podiatrist and the emphasis throughout is on practical procedures which are in the main relatively simple. Some procedures are more complicated and really require the additional advice of a tutor. There is no similar book on the market which digests the relevant practical points from larger works for those wishing only a concise overview of the principal practical aspects of the subject. After an introductory chapter on anatomy and physiology of the nail unit, the book goes on to describe infections of the nails, signs of systemic disease manifesting in the nails, dermatological diseases of the nails, occupational nail disorders, cosmetology and nail tumours. There then follows a section of nineteen practical procedures which are described step-by-step in detail.

La scuola dell'atopia (Italian, Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Carlo Gelmetti La scuola dell'atopia (Italian, Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Carlo Gelmetti
R1,489 Discovery Miles 14 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Immunity to and Prevention of Herpes Zoster (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001): A.A. Gershon, C.H.... Immunity to and Prevention of Herpes Zoster (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001)
A.A. Gershon, C.H. Calisher, A.M. Arvin
R1,427 Discovery Miles 14 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Under sponsorship of the National Institutes of Health of Japan, an international conference entitled "Immunity and Prevention of Herpes Zoster" was held in 1 Osaka, Japan, March 8-10, 1999. Attendees included basic and clinical investi gators from Asia, Europe, and North America. The meeting was organized to explore progress made in basic virology and molecular understanding of varicella zoster (VZV), and to provide information on current knowledge of latency of VZV in humans. Updates on the immunology responses of humans to VZV, and a description of the current status of varicella vaccine worldwide were also included. In addition, the possibility of prevent ing zoster in people latently infected with wild-type VZV by immunizing them with varicella vaccine was presented. The papers in this volume include written summaries of most of the presentations given at that conference. Coincidentally but appropriately, the conference marked the twenty-fifth or "silver anniversary" of the first publication of the development and use of live varicella vaccine to prevent varicella, by Takahashi and his colleagues. Because varicella vaccine is the first herpesvirus vaccine licensed in use for humans, it is of special interest to all individuals who studied these pathogens. In view of the interest in developing vaccines against other herpes viruses, there was also a presentation on the current status of vaccines against cytomegaloviruses (CMV) at the conference."

Fatty Acids and Inflammatory Skin Diseases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): Schroeder Fatty Acids and Inflammatory Skin Diseases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
Schroeder
R1,389 Discovery Miles 13 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Fatty acids play an important role in the barrier function of skin and represent a major source of proinflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes and other lipids in inflammatory skin disorders. This book combines the two major functions of fatty acids in skin biology. In the first part the biosynthesis of fatty acids in skin with its role in barrier function as well as the role of dietary fatty acids on skin cell function and in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases is presented. The second part deals with skin as a source of proinflammatory eicosanoids, especially with the keratinocyte as a major cellular source. Metabolism of eicosanoids in skin, its role in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis as well as pharmacological inhibition of eicosanoid biosynthesis is reviewed. The book finishes with a chapter describing the methods used for quantification of fatty acids and derivatives in skin inflammation. Anyone interested in skin physiology would benefit from the overviews about the two sites of fatty acids' function in skin integrity and in skin inflammation.
