Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Melanoma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Melanoma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2012)
Michael J. Murphy
R5,875 Discovery Miles 58 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes both the technologies used in the discovery of melanoma biomarkers and the clinical application of these biomarkers for diagnosis and staging of disease, determination of prognosis, treatment planning, monitoring of response to therapy, identification of novel therapeutic targets and drug development. A broad range of biomarkers (DNA/chromosomal, mRNA, microRNA, mitochondrial DNA, epigenetic and protein) is outlined. As therapies for melanoma become increasingly more target specific, the identification, validation and use of biomarkers will invariably play a greater role in the management of patients with this disease. Diagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Melanoma is an essential resource for oncologists, dermatologists, dermatopathologists, general pathologists with an interest in melanoma, and melanoma researchers.

Molecular Diagnostics in Dermatology and Dermatopathology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2011): Michael... Molecular Diagnostics in Dermatology and Dermatopathology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2011)
Michael J. Murphy
R4,385 Discovery Miles 43 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Molecular Diagnostics in Dermatology and Dermatopathology presents the basics of molecular biology and molecular diagnostic methods most commonly used in the clinical laboratory, with an emphasis on the concepts and testing most relevant to dermatological diseases. Topics include the integration of newer diagnostic and prognostic techniques with 'traditional' histologic approaches, and discussions of regulatory, ethical, legal, economic issues and 'newer' technologies. This important diagnostic tool outlines the clinically relevant uses (i.e.; diagnostic, staging and/or prognostic) applications of these techniques in the field of dermatology. Molecular studies that investigate the pathogenesis of skin diseases will be excluded, unless they also have a direct diagnostic utility. The book will be of interest to practicing pathologists, dermatology and pathology residents, dermatologists, and dermatopathologists.

Andrology - Male Reproductive Health and Dysfunction (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 3rd ed. 2010): Eberhard... Andrology - Male Reproductive Health and Dysfunction (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 3rd ed. 2010)
Eberhard Nieschlag, Hermann M. Behre, Susan Nieschlag
R3,654 Discovery Miles 36 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The decade that has passed since publication of the second edition of this textbook has not only witnessed a tremendous increase in knowledge within the ? eld of and- logy, but also seen the ? eld itself achieve a newfound status within the medical p- fession. Knowledge and status have been of mutual bene? t to the ? eld and the growing critical mass of diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities have caused andrology to be recognized as a medical subspecialty in some countries such as Germany, Poland, and Estonia. The European Academy of Andrology (EAA) served as a pacemaker for this development and continues to strive for establishment of andrology as a clinical ? eld. Well-designed curricula and qualifying examinations have contributed to the of? cial recognition of andrology as a speciality. This recognition of the ? eld helps patients with andrological problems to ? nd the specialist they seek. This textbook summarizes the current state of knowledge in the ? eld of andrology. It is a source of knowledge to all those who are or want to become andrologists. In addition, as andrology is clearly an interdisciplinary ? eld, this book may serve as a compendium and source of reference for all those physicians and biologists active in neighboring areas, who want to obtain an overview of andrology and who require information on special problems. The extensive references are timely and up to date.

A. Bewley
R3,664 Discovery Miles 36 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Skin disease can be more than skin deep Our skin is one of the first things people notice about us. Blemishes, rashes, dry, flaky skin all these can breed insecurity, even suicidality, even though the basic skin condition is relatively benign. Skin disease can lead to psychiatric disturbance. But symptoms of skin disease can also indicate psychological disturbance. Scratching, scarring, bleeding, rashes. These skin disturbances can be the result of psychiatric disease. How do you help a dermatological patient with a psychological reaction? How do you differentiate psychological causes from true skin disease? These are challenges that ask dermatologists, psychiatrists, psychologists and other health care specialists to collaborate. Practical Psychodermatology provides a simple, comprehensive, practical and up-to-date guide for the management of patients with psychocutaneous disease. Edited by dermatologists and psychiatrists to ensure it as relevant to both specialties it covers: * History and examination * Assessment and risk management * Psychiatric aspects of dermatological disease * Dermatological aspects of psychiatric disease * Management and treatment The international and multi-specialty approach of Practical Psychodermatology provides a unique toolkit for dermatologists, psychiatrists, psychologists and other health care specialists needing to care for patients whose suffering is more than skin deep.

This book provides the clinician and the researcher with a broad understanding of the molecular and cellular pathogenesis of melanoma, explores the clinical characteristics and criteria for clinical and pathological staging of the disease, and provides an overview of current and evolving treatment strategies in the adjuvant, metastatic, and preventive settings. The treatment of special populations and rare variants of melanoma that often present particular clinical challenges is also covered. Authored by international experts in melanoma biology and clinical management, this volume concisely explains how to diagnose, treat, and prevent melanoma while reviewing advances in basic science and providing an overview of innovative approaches still under development.

Handbook of Integrative Dermatology - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Peter A. Lio, Toral Patel, Neill T.... Handbook of Integrative Dermatology - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)
Peter A. Lio, Toral Patel, Neill T. Peters, Sarah Kasprowicz
R3,731 Discovery Miles 37 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This user-friendly reference tool presents clinical scenarios and discusses some practical complementary and alternative therapies available in dermatology. It focuses on peer-reviewed data that are suitable for use in a conventional dermatology practice and helps dermatologists guide their patients when faced with questions regarding integrative dermatology using an evidence-based, reader-friendly, and case-focused approach. Within the field of dermatology, there is a marked void in the understanding of complementary and alternative approaches, though dermatologists frequently use off-label therapies to manage chronic conditions. They do so, however, with a range of success and potentially considerable side effect profiles. Handbook of Integrative Dermatology is a must-have tool for any practicing dermatologist.

Immune Infertility - The Impact of Immune Reactions on Human Infertility (Paperback, 2009 ed.): Walter K. H. Krause, Rajesh K.... Immune Infertility - The Impact of Immune Reactions on Human Infertility (Paperback, 2009 ed.)
Walter K. H. Krause, Rajesh K. Naz
R5,108 Discovery Miles 51 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Infertility is defned as the inability to conceive after having unprotected intercourse for a year. Infertility is increasing worldwide and has various causes both in the male and the female partner. Immune reactions to sperm can contribute up to 2-30% of infertility. The sperm has both autoantigenic as well as isoantigenic potential, and is thus capable of p- ducing antisperm antibodies (ASAs) and sperm-reactive T cells in both infertile men and women. Also, over 75% vasectomized men produce autoantibodies to sperm that can cause a problem in regaining fertility even after successful re-anastomosis in vasovasostomy. Early claims regarding the incidence and involvement of ASAs in involuntary human infertility were probably overemphasized because of unreliable techniques and naivety concerning the complexity of the immune response and antigenic nature of the sperm cell. These factors, the lack of well-designed and controlled experimental studies, and the dearth of effective therapeutic modalities resulted in the confusion of the occurrence and importance of ASAs in human infertility. Consequently, evaluation of infertile couples for ASAs and their possible role in infertility was not considered a signifcant proposition. The development of more accurate assays and the discovery of mucosal immunity capable of responses independent of systemic immunity have caused inclusion of sperm cells and genital tract secretions in the analysis of ASAs.
