Skin Reactions to Drugs (Hardcover): Kirsti Kauppinen, Kristiina Alanko, Matti Hannuksela, Howard I. Maibach Skin Reactions to Drugs (Hardcover)
Kirsti Kauppinen, Kristiina Alanko, Matti Hannuksela, Howard I. Maibach
R6,470 Discovery Miles 64 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Skin reactions to drugs are a ubiquitous problem-the most commonly observed drug sensitivity observed in a wide range of specialties. Skin Reactions to Drugs emphasizes the mechanisms and clinical and laboratory proof of a cause-and-effect relationship between drugs and adverse reactions. It discusses the technique of drug challenge, which has been extensively developed in Finland, but not commonly practiced in the rest of the world.
In this textbook, 12 of the most common drug eruptions are described both clinically and histologically. It features a chapter on systemic contact dermatitis and also addresses cutaneous adverse drug reactions that appear in HIV-infected patients. 40 full-color photographs provide vivid examples of the reactions being discussed. A highly practical resource for practicing physicians and other health care workers, Skin Reactions to Drugs represents the platinum standard of research conducted on the causation of certain adverse reactions of skin.

Obstetric Dermatology - A Practical Guide (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Mark Lebwohl Obstetric Dermatology - A Practical Guide (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Mark Lebwohl; Arieh Ingber
R3,662 Discovery Miles 36 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are many changes in the skin, hair, and nails during and after pregnancy. Patients are certainly aware that those changes are occurring, but few physicians and even fewer patients know how to predict the course of those changes. Pigmentary changes occur, but are they permanent? Can they be prevented or reversed? Hair may become thicker during pregnancy, only to fall out in the postpartum period. When will hair stop falling out? Will it grow back? What hormonal changes are occurring to produce these effects on the skin, hair, and nails? Will those hormonal changes affect other organs? Some cutaneous manifestations of pregnancy are common and recognized by most physicians. Abdominal striae, for example, are easily identified, but physicians have many questions about them. Why do they develop? Can they be prevented or treated? Other cutaneous manifestations of pregnancy are less common and recognized by few. For example, pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy is a debilitating condition that is treatable once diagnosed. Even more important than the treatment, the knowledge imparted to a worried mother that her child will be fine and that the condition is se- limited is priceless; but the condition must first be recognized by the patient's physician. All of these questions and conditions are addressed in this extraordinary book. Pigm- tary disorders are addressed in detail in Chap. 2.

Paul J. Carniol, Gary D Monheit
R2,287 Discovery Miles 22 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Practitioners of aesthetic medicine and surgery already have a series of textbooks instructing on how to treat the standard patient. Unfortunately, they also have patients who do not conform to the average-those who are of a different age, or sex, ethnicity, or medical history, or who have special social requirements. The book contains extensive material on "non-standard" and "non-textbook" patients. It discusses how to evaluate these patients, and when to decide that a patient is not suited for a particular procedure. The Iranian Nuclear Crisis - Avoiding worst-case outcomes (Hardcover): Mark Fitzpatrick The Iranian Nuclear Crisis - Avoiding worst-case outcomes (Hardcover)
Mark Fitzpatrick
R5,186 Discovery Miles 51 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This paper explains how Iran developed its nuclear programme to the point where it threatens to achieve a weapons capability within a short time frame, and analyses Western policy responses aimed at forestalling that capability. Key questions are addressed: will the world have to accept an Iranian uranium-enrichment programme, and does having a weapons capability mean having the Bomb? For nearly two decades, Western strategy on the Iran nuclear issue emphasised denial of supply. Since 2002, there has also been a demand-side dimension to the strategy, aimed at changing Iran's cost benefit calculations through inducements and pressure. But the failure of these policies to prevent Iran from coming close to achieving a nuclear-weapons capability has promoted suggestions for fallback strategies that would grant legitimacy to uranium enrichment in Iran in exchange for intrusive inspections and constraints on the programme. The paper assesses these 'second-best options in terms of their feasibility and their impact on the proliferation risks of diversion of nuclear material and knowledge, clandestine development and NPT break-out, and the risk of stimulating a proliferation cascade in the Middle East and beyond. It concludes that the risks are still best minimised by reinforcing the binary choice presented to Iran of cooperation or isolation, and strengthening denial of supply.
