'The book is of first-rate importance. It is a fundamental subject, extremely well done.' The Times Literary Supplement In this book, first published in 1971, the author seeks to determine within broad limits the size of the Italian population in the period covered, chiefly on the basis of Roman census figures and of estimates of the number of men under arms year by year; use is made by way of analogy of demographic data from other ages.

International Blogging - Identity, Politics and Networked Publics (Hardcover, New edition): Adrienne Russell, Nabil Echchaibi International Blogging - Identity, Politics and Networked Publics (Hardcover, New edition)
Adrienne Russell, Nabil Echchaibi
R2,201 R1,869 Discovery Miles 18 690 Save R332 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bloggers around the world produce material for local, national and international audiences, yet they are developing in ways that are distinct from the U.S. model. Through case studies of blogs written in English, Chinese, Arab, French, Russian, and Hebrew, this book explores the way blogging is being conceptualized in different cultural contexts. The authors move beyond the most highly trafficked sites to shed light on larger developments taking place online, calling into question assumptions that form the foundation of much of what we read on blogging and, by extension, on global amateur or do-it-yourself media. This book suggests a more nuanced approach to understanding how blogospheres serve communication needs, how they exist in relation to one another, where they exist apart as well as where they overlap, and how they interact with other forms of communication in the larger media landscape.

Indeterminacy - Waste, Value, and the Imagination (Hardcover): Catherine Alexander, Andrew Sanchez Indeterminacy - Waste, Value, and the Imagination (Hardcover)
Catherine Alexander, Andrew Sanchez
R2,837 Discovery Miles 28 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What happens to people, places and objects that do not fit the ordering regimes and progressive narratives of modernity? Conventional understandings imply that progress leaves such things behind, and excludes them as though they were valueless waste. This volume uses the concept of indeterminacy to explore how conditions of exclusion and abandonment may give rise to new values, as well as to states of despair and alienation. Drawing upon ethnographic research about a wide variety of contexts, the chapters here explore how indeterminacy is created and experienced in relationship to projects of classification and progress.

Some of the new topics discussed include: globalization, transnational organizational structures, debt, the transition from socialism to capitalism and human development.

Cosmopolitanism in Practice (Hardcover, New Ed): Magdalena Nowicka Cosmopolitanism in Practice (Hardcover, New Ed)
Magdalena Nowicka; Maria Rovisco
R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What makes people cosmopolitan? How is cosmopolitanism shaping everyday life experiences and the practices of ordinary people? Making use of empirical research, Cosmopolitanism in Practice examines the concrete settings in which individuals display cosmopolitan sensibilities and dispositions, illustrating the ways in which cosmopolitan self-transformations can be used as an analytical tool to explain a variety of identity outlooks and practices. The manner in which both past and present cosmopolitanisms compete with meta-narratives such as nationalism, multiculturalism and religion is also investigated, alongside the employment of cosmopolitan ideas in situations of tension and conflict. With an international team of contributors, including Ulrich Beck, Steven Vertovec, Rob Kroes and Natan Sznaider, this book draws on a variety of intellectual disciplines and international contexts to show how people embrace and make use of cosmopolitan ideas and attitudes.

Economy, Crime and Wrong in a Neoliberal Era (Hardcover): James G. Carrier Economy, Crime and Wrong in a Neoliberal Era (Hardcover)
James G. Carrier
R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Corporate scandals since the 1990s have made it clear that economic wrongdoing is more common in Western societies than might be expected. This volume examines the relationship between such wrong-doing and the neoliberal orientations, policies, and practices that have been influential since around 1980, considering whether neoliberalism has affected the likelihood that people and firms will act in ways that many people would consider wrong. It furthermore asks whether ideas of economic right and wrong have become so fragmented and localized that collective judgement has become almost impossible.

Roma Activism - Reimagining Power and Knowledge (Hardcover): Sam Beck, Ana Ivasiuc Roma Activism - Reimagining Power and Knowledge (Hardcover)
Sam Beck, Ana Ivasiuc
R2,841 Discovery Miles 28 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Exploring contemporary debates and developments in Roma-related research and forms of activism, this volume argues for taking up reflexivity as practice in these fields, and advocates a necessary renewal of research sites, methods, and epistemologies. The contributors gathered here - whose professional trajectories often lie at the confluence between activism, academia, and policy or development interventions - are exceptionally well placed to reflect on mainstream practices in all these fields, and, from their particular positions, envision a reimagining of these practices.

Neal M. Ashkanasy, Charmine E.J. Hartel, Wilfred J. Zerbe; Series edited by Neal M. Ashkanasy
R4,525 Discovery Miles 45 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains a further selection of the best papers presented at the Seventh Emonet conference (Montreal, Canada, August 2010), following on from Volume 7 and augmented once again with invited chapters authored by leading scholars in the field. "Experiencing and managing emotions in the workplace" comprises fourteen chapters arranged in four sections: The experience of emotion; The dynamics of emotion; Regulating emotion; and The emotionally intelligent organization. These encompass a variety of methodological approaches, including qualitative and quantitative research, sourced from research conducted in organizations in the USA, Europe, and Australasia. The volume's secondary theme is "care and compassion", the theme of the Academy of Management meetings that followed the Emonet conference in Montreal. In effect, organizations that understand their members' emotions and utilize this information in their management practices become "emotionally intelligent" and capable of showing care and compassion to all stakeholders. The chapters in this book provide a rich and varied coverage of the latest developments in the study of the role of emotions in organizational settings.

Supranationalism in the New World Order - Global Processes Reviewed (Hardcover): Paul Close, Emiko Ohki-Close Supranationalism in the New World Order - Global Processes Reviewed (Hardcover)
Paul Close, Emiko Ohki-Close
R2,671 Discovery Miles 26 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Supranationalism in the New World Order argues that in the post-Cold War distribution of global power and configuration of global players, the European Union is just one among a growing number of regional regimes that are acquiring prominent roles in the process of global governance, to some extent through the operation of differentiated zones of geo-political management. The EU is currently the most advanced and influential example of a regional regime by virtue of having the novel European Community at its core - the EC being uniquely constructed around supranational institutions, decision-making and laws. But the EC's uniqueness is unlikely to last. The evident competitive advantages of supranational regional regimes, in conjunction with the realism generally adopted by the various global players, is conducive to the consolidation and proliferation of SRRs in a manner consistent with the neo-functionalist perspective on the progress of the EU. Other prospective SRRs include the Association of South-East Asian Nations, the East Asian Economic Caucus, the South Asian Society for Regional Cooperation, the North American Free Trade Area, and the Andean Community. It is argued that the emerging character of the global system will increasingly depend on SRRs, the relationships among such organisations, and accordingly the doctrine of supranationalism. The book offers a distinctive way of representing and interpreting the global system, global processes and global developments with the help of a set of freshly articulated concepts. The result is a novel, but highly contentious, treatise.

Psychological Aspects of Modernity (Hardcover, New): Jerome Braun Psychological Aspects of Modernity (Hardcover, New)
Jerome Braun
R2,807 R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Braun's work has a strong psychological focus on the ramifications of social change--with emphasis on modernization for meeting the psychological needs of the people involved. What is unique about the work (it represents the collaboration of seven scholars in such fields as philosophy, psychology, sociology, and political science) is that it makes a serious attempt to provide a realistic and relevant framework of analysis for interpreting the way the human personality reacts to strain and pressure, including cultural and social change. As societies become increasingly bureaucratic, anonymous, and materialistic, and social relationships become increasingly segmented rather than holistic, it is important to study how basic human needs are fulfilled and how personalities are molded.

Advancing Quality of Life in a Turbulent World (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Richard J. Estes Advancing Quality of Life in a Turbulent World (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Richard J. Estes
R2,784 Discovery Miles 27 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

World social development has arrived at a critical turning point. Economically advanced nations have made significant progress toward meeting the basic needs of their populations; however, the majority of developing countries have not. Problems of rapid population growth, failing economies, famine, environmental devastation, majority/minority group conflicts, involuntary population migration, increasing militarization, and other broadly-based social, political and economic forces are challenging the capacity of people to meet their most fundamental needs. For many, the conditions required to live a quality life are being eroded.

The thirteen papers contained in this volume explore a broad range of factors that impact on quality of life worldwide-globalization, regionalization, recently regained political autonomy, population migration, factors that contribute to health and illness, shortages in food and agriculture, the importance of the family, community and sustainable development in promoting quality of life and, even more fundamentally, the contribution of faith and spirituality in advancing personal and collective well-being in an otherwise turbulent world.

R4,040 Discovery Miles 40 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Agent-based modeling and social simulation have emerged as an interdisciplinary area of social science that includes computational economics, organizational science, social dynamics, and complex systems. This area contributes to enriching our understanding of the fundamental processes of social phenomena caused by complex interactions among agents. Bringing together diverse approaches to social simulation and research agendas, this book presents a unique collection of contributions from the Second World Congress on Social Simulation, held in 2008 at George Mason University in Washington DC, USA. This book in particular includes articles on norms, diffusion, social networks, economy, markets and organizations, computational modeling, and programming environments, providing new hypotheses and theories, new simulation experiments compared with various data sets, and new methods for model design and development. These works emerged from a global and interdisciplinary scientific community of the three regional scientific associations for social simulation: the North American Association for Computational Social and Organizational Science (NAACSOS; now the Computational Social Science Society, CSSS), the European Social Simulation Association (ESSA), and the Pacific Asian Association for Agent-bBased Approach in Social Systems Sciences (PAAA)."

Living Under Austerity - Greek Society in Crisis (Hardcover): Evdoxios Doxiadis, Aimee Placas Living Under Austerity - Greek Society in Crisis (Hardcover)
Evdoxios Doxiadis, Aimee Placas
R3,142 Discovery Miles 31 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since its sovereign debt crisis in 2009, Greece has been living under austerity, with no apparent end in sight. This volume explores the effects of policies pursued by the Greek state since then (under the direction of the Troika), and how Greek society has responded. In addition to charting the actual effects of the Greek crisis on politics, health care, education, media, and other areas, the book both examines and challenges the "crisis" era as the context for changing attitudes and developments within Greek society.

Pilgrimage and Political Economy - Translating the Sacred (Hardcover): Simon Coleman, John Eade Pilgrimage and Political Economy - Translating the Sacred (Hardcover)
Simon Coleman, John Eade
R2,836 Discovery Miles 28 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pilgrimage has always had a tendency to follow-and sometimes create-trade routes. This volume explores how wider factors behind transnational and global mobility have impacted on pilgrimage activity across the world, and examines the ways in which pilgrimage relates to migration, diaspora, and political cooperation or conflict across nation-states. Furthermore, it brings together case studies that explore forms of mobility where pilgrimage is juxtaposed, complements, or is in intimate association with other forms of movement.

Tribal Play - Subcultural Journeys Through Sport (Hardcover, 4th ed.): Kevin A. Young, Michael Atkinson Tribal Play - Subcultural Journeys Through Sport (Hardcover, 4th ed.)
Kevin A. Young, Michael Atkinson
R3,145 Discovery Miles 31 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Traceable as far back as the work of the path-breaking ???Chicago School??? of Sociology in the 1920s and 1930s, ???subculture??? and ???counterculture??? have long been conceptual staples of the discipline. Implemented originally to designate and describe smaller, often deviant or delinquent, groups within larger social communities, the terms gained pace in their use in mid-twentieth century criminological research, and especially with the development of Cultural Studies in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, where they became widely used to describe processes of social class-based opposition, resistance and protest. More recently, sociologists have moved beyond a strict conformity-resistance model in accounting for the behaviour of sub-communities that coalesce around particular values, behaviours, or preferences. Indeed, contemporary sociological research has raised the possibility that the term ???subculture??? in particular may have entirely outgrown its usefulness. While the term ???counterculture??? has also languished, there is no doubt that the sorts of social groups to which these terms have historically referred are more extensive and colourful than ever. Certainly this is the case in sport. Put simply, all societies are replete with their own versions of ???Tribal Play??? which encompass and represent wider social patterns, processes, and struggles.
This volume is a collection of 16 readings on aspects of sub-community life in sport that showcases the breadth and depth of sport subcultural research by a group of international scholars representing varied theoretical and methodological orientations. Some of the sport communities examined include soccer hooligans, enduranceathletes, disabled athletes, environmentally conscious surfers, and X-Games participants. This fourth volume in the Research in the Sociology of Sport series is edited by two sociologists whose academic training, research and teaching span three of the subdisciplines in which the concepts of ???subculture??? and ???counterculture??? have been most avidly used and critically tested (Criminology/Youth/Sport), and whose ???subcultural??? ventures both in sport and as sociologists are extensive. Michael Atkinson is Senior Lecturer in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University in the UK, and Kevin Young is Professor of Sociology at the University of Calgary, Canada.

S.J. Miller, Laura Bolf Beliveau, Peggy Rice, David Kirkland
R836 Discovery Miles 8 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book documents how preservice and inservice English teachers negotiate the transfer of the social justice pedagogies they learn in university methods classes to their own work as beginning full-time teachers. Based on a set of teacher narratives, this critical and evidence-based view of English teachers' interpretations of, responses to, and embodiments of social justice explores the complex shifts and concessions that English teachers often make when transitioning between preservice and inservice spaces - shifts which cause teachers to embrace and negotiate a social justice agenda in their classrooms, or for some, to modify, or even abandon it altogether. This work also offers a fresh perspective on the specific, context-dependent pathways and mechanisms through which English teachers enter school culture and respond to their own racial, sexual, and financial positions in relation to the gendered, raced, and classed positions of their schools, students, and classrooms. The book will be useful to social justice researchers, English teacher educators, inservice and preservice teachers, policymakers, cross-disciplinary teacher education fields, and interdisciplinary audiences, particularly in the fields of anthropology, sociology of education, philosophy, and cultural studies.

Sociologies of Poetry Translation - Emerging Perspectives (Hardcover): Jacob Blakesley Sociologies of Poetry Translation - Emerging Perspectives (Hardcover)
Jacob Blakesley
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the sociology of literary translation is well-established, and even flourishing, the same cannot be said for the sociology of poetry translation. Sociologies of Poetry Translation features scholars who address poetry translation from sociological perspectives in order to catalyze new methods of investigating poetry translation. This book makes the case for a move from the singular 'sociology of poetry translation' to the pluralist 'sociologies', in order to account for the rich variety of approaches that are currently emerging to deal with poetry translation. It also aims to bridge the gap between the 'cultural turn' and the 'sociological turn' in Translation Studies, with the range of contributions showcasing the rich diversity of approaches to analysing poetry translation from socio-cultural, socio-historical, socio-political and micro-social perspectives. Contributors draw on theorists including Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann and assess poetry translation from and/or into Catalan, Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish. A wide range of topics are featured in the book including: trends in poetry translation in the modern global book market; the commissioning and publishing of poetry translations in the United States of America; modern English-language translations of Dante; women poet-translators in mid-19th century Ireland; translations of Russian poetry anthologies into modern English; the translation of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets in post-colonial Tanzania and socialist Czechoslovakia; translations and translators of Italian poetry into 20th and 21st century Sweden; modern European poet-translators; and collaborative writing between prominent English and Spanish poet-translators.

Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change (Hardcover): Patrick G. Coy Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change (Hardcover)
Patrick G. Coy
R3,789 Discovery Miles 37 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A long-standing characteristic of the Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change series is publishing new theoretical and empirical work that connects previously disparate sub-fields. This volume continues that tradition by opening with five papers that join social movements research with organizational theory, new institutionalism, strategic action fields, and nonviolent action. One study does this by examining how the Fenian Brotherhood organized a transnational revolutionary movement for Ireland's independence. Another paper analyzes the strategic relations between conservative, moderate and radical organizations in different movements, while a further study zeroes in on nonviolent action campaigns. One chapter examines how the North American SlutWalk campaign responded to the organizational field by strategically adapted their framing to make it more resonant transnationally. Other chapters examine how LGBT organizational presence influences the passage of hate crime legislation, and how the women's movement in Franco's Spain persevered through repression and abeyance partly due to cultural practices.

Teamology: The Construction and Organization of Effective Teams (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Douglass J. Wilde Teamology: The Construction and Organization of Effective Teams (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Douglass J. Wilde
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Teamology: The Construction and Organization of Effective Teams" demonstrates how psychiatrist C. G. Jung's cognition theory, a cornerstone of modern personality typology, may be used to form and organize effective problem-solving teams through a novel quantitative transformation of numbers from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) psychological instrument directly on to Jung's eight cognitive modes. The resulting quantitative mode scores make obvious what is needed to make a good team.

The product of sixteen years of studying student teams in engineering design project courses at Stanford University, "Teamology: The Construction and Organization of Effective Teams" is of value to educators in charge of engineering project courses, as well as to students and working professionals on project teams at all levels of engineering, architecture and business. The book is also useful for users of MBTI, and counselors interested in personal self-awareness and the development of interpersonal ability.

This outstanding volume combines the perspectives of managers, sociologists, and scholars of business ethics in order to analyze the social role of business in society. The authors discuss the organizational dynamics and dimensions of corporate social policies and the ways in which organizational policies are interpreted and evaluated by outside groups. They also develop and apply an integrated conceptual model in a case study of the Community Reinvestment Act and present the responses of selected Boston area banks to the study. Instead of accepting the reductionism of perspectives and polarization along disiplinary lines that have characterized research in the field, the authors focus on the need to explore the role of business in the larger society from a variety of viewpoints within a unified conceptual model.

Beyond Liberal Egalitarianism - Marx and Normative Social Theory in the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover): Tony Smith Beyond Liberal Egalitarianism - Marx and Normative Social Theory in the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
Tony Smith
R4,278 Discovery Miles 42 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Progressive theorists and activists insist that contemporary capitalism is deeply flawed from a normative point of view. However, most accept the liberal egalitarian thesis that the serious shortcomings of market societies (financial excess, inequality, and so on) could be overcome with proper political regulation. Building on Marx's legacy, Tony Smith argues in Beyond Liberal Egalitarianism that advocates of this thesis (Rawls, Habermas, Stiglitz, et al.) lack an adequate concept of capital and the state. These theorists also fail to comprehend new developments in world history ensuring that the 'destructive' aspects of capitalism increasingly outweigh whatever 'creative' elements it might continue to possess. Smith concludes that a normative social theory adequate to the twenty-first century must explicitly and unequivocally embrace socialism.
