Originally published in 1993, this book addresses the issue of the
place of the expressive arts in primary schools in the years around
and beyond the implementation of the National Curriculum. It
comprises a set of case studies on the language arts, painting and
drawing, dance, drama and music, that suggest ways forward in
teaching these arts to children aged between four and eleven.
This book concentrates on the deep historical, political, and
institutional relationships between art, education, and excess.
Going beyond field specific discourses of art history, art
criticism, philosophy, and aesthetics, it explores how the concept
of excess has been important and enduring from antiquity through
contemporary art, and from early film through the newer interactive
media. Examples considered throughout the book focus on disgust,
grandiosity, sex, violence, horror, disfigurement, endurance,
shock, abundance, and emptiness, and frames them all within an
educational context. Together they provide theories and
classificatory systems, historical and political interpretations of
art and excess, examples of popular culture, and suggestions for
the future of educational practice.
Is it Art? is a series of books focusing on exciting contemporary
art forms. From graffiti to junk sculptures and from urban street
art to installations, Is it Art? offers young readers examples from
each medium and tells the story behind their creation. The series
also encourages discussion and suggests activities so that readers
can try making their own art. So what is Junk Sculpture? Well, it's
basically rubbish! Junk sculpture can be made from just about
anything that has been thrown away, from coat hangers to Cadillacs.
Some sculptors see junk as a fantastic source of otherwise
expensive materials and a way of recycling and reusing the planet's
resources. Others see junk as a way of making art contemporary and
thought-provoking by using modern or unusual materials, rather than
classic sculpting materials such as bronze or marble. Whatever your
opinion, the sculptures in this book are guaranteed to get you
thinking about the things we throw away.
Form drawing, allowing children to understand the idea of a form
and encouraging them to recreate it in their own way, is a key
principal of Steiner-Waldorf education and its study enriches the
teaching of all subjects in the curriculum. This unique book first
explains form drawing and its role in Steiner-Waldorf schools,
while also tackling practicalities such as advice on suitable paper
and pencils. It goes on to offer a wide selection of exercises for
Classes 2 to 5, with step-by-step instructions on how they can be
taught, arranged both by class and by theme, drawing on examples of
pupils' work and images of forms from nature and cultural heritage.
Teachers can use these lessons as an inspiring starting point. This
fascinating and beautiful book will allow Waldorf educators, at
school and home, to confidently teach form drawing to their pupils.

Learn to Draw: Dragons shows children how to draw six incredible
dragons, from magical, wicked and flying dragons to fire-breathing,
water and Chinese dragons. Each drawing is broken down into seven
simple, easy-to-follow steps to help children create, and then
colour in, their own dragon pictures. Fact boxes on each spread
provide information about dragons, allowing children to learn
about, as well as to draw, them. A glossary at the back of the book
explains any complicated words, and a 'More Information' section
gives suggestions as to how children can find out more about
dragons and dragon myths. If children have loved learning to draw
dragons, why not try learning to draw dinosaurs, baby animals,
fairies, mermaids, unicorns, knights, castles, pirates and pirate
ships in other titles in the series?
This enchanting volume by an artist couple who are also parents
tells a very touching rite of passage story. Jeppe Hein and his
wife Silke have teamed up to create a very special kind of picture
book. It tells of the multifaceted experiences of the caterpillar
Aya and its metamorphosis into a no less multifaceted radiant
butterfly. The illustrations bring the story to life: Jeppe Hein's
watercolor drawings are congenially and sensitively enhanced by
Silke Hein's nature photography. Areas of color and texture of
almost magical depth are created. There is no question that this
attractive work is not only just for kids. Images of such
sophisticated colorfulness will captivate viewers of all ages and
lend wings to their own flights of fancy.
Learn to Draw: Pirates shows children how to draw six piratical
things, from pirate captains and peg-leg sailors to enormous pirate
sailing ships. Each drawing is broken down into seven simple,
easy-to-follow steps to help children create, and then colour in,
their own pirate pictures. Fact boxes on each spread provide
information about pirates, allowing children to learn about, as
well as to draw, them. A glossary at the back of the book explains
any complicated words, and a 'More Information' section gives
suggestions as to how children can find out more about pirates. If
children have loved learning to draw pirates, why not try learning
to draw dinosaurs, dragons, fairies, mermaids, unicorns, knights,
castles, baby animals in other titles in the series?
In ancient Rome, the slaves are rebelling--and they've even stolen
Julius Caesar's own warship, the finest in the Roman navy. Under
the heroic leadership of Spartakis, the former galley slaves make
for the small town where Caesar's old enemies Asterix and Obelix
live. Now everyone must sail to the wonderful continent of Atlantis
to find a cure. But, the Romans are on the ocean blue, too...and
the battles are about to come fast and furiously.
This book places observational filmmaking in the context of the
rapidly developing landscape of creativity and arts based research
in education. The author uses observational filmmaking as a lens to
address debates surrounding video based and arts based research.
Utilising the work of Dewey and Deleuze as the theoretical
underpinnings of the volume, this is combined with numerous
practical examples of observational filmmaking in schools. The
author argues that observational video camera and editing
techniques combine careful observation with rigorous visual
analysis: they place sensory, affectual and aesthetic qualities in
experience centre stage. While observational filmmaking in itself
has enormous potential as a methodology for education research, it
may also become a fulcrum for children's learning. Children record
their experiences in the world around them as they look carefully
with a video camera. This pioneering yet practical book will be of
interest and value to students and scholars of creativity,
learning, and education research methods, as well as constituting a
useful guide for teachers, arts practitioners and education policy
makers.

This book features effective artistic practices to improve literacy
and language skills for emergent bilinguals in PreK-12 schools.
Including insights from key voices from the field, this book

emergent language learners and students with limited access to
academic English. Challenging current prescriptions for teaching
English to language learners, the arts-integrated framework in this
book is grounded in a sense of student and teacher agency and
offers key pedagogical tools to build upon students' sociocultural
knowledge and improve language competence and confidence. Offering
rich and diverse examples of using the arts as a way of talking,
this volume invites teacher educators, teachers, artists, and
researchers to reconsider how to fully engage students in their own
