navigating what they say and how they speak, their confidence,
expressions, and identities, as Black girls in these settings. In
The Influence of Dramatic Arts on Literacies for Black Girls in
Middle School, York demonstrates the impact that practicing drama
strategies has on foundational, digital, and identity literacies
for middle school Black girls. Personal stories of Black girls are
shared on how drama strategies help them navigate discrimination,
racist and misogynistic slurs, and even support their self
confidence and public speaking. The basis of these stories are told
through a Black feminist thought lens, which York uses to take
readers through surprising drama strategies that Black girls adopt
to help them become resilient and confident while embracing
themselves fully. Readers will see the benefits of Black girls
practicing drama in a safe space guided by a drama teacher that is
a Black women who chooses culturally relevant pedagogy for her

Painting and drawing are key artistic expressions which play an
important role in children's physical, emotional and spiritual
development. This comprehensive teachers' manual provides a
complete artistic curriculum for Classes One to Eight in
Steiner-Waldorf schools (age six to fourteen). At each stage, the
book demonstrates the skills that teachers can help children to
develop. There are 280 practical exercises for teachers to use, and
over 800 drawings and paintings as inspiring examples of artistic
possibilities. The curriculum moves from free drawing, to guided
colour exercises, to precise perspective drawing. The exercises
draw on elements of the Steiner-Waldorf curriculum at appropriate
ages, incorporating themes from fables and legends, the Old
Testament, Norse mythology, animals, Ancient Greece and botany.
Throughout, the author draws on art theory and shows that art is
truly a universal language. The book is also suitable for adult
self-study.
Emotions are part of every toddler's day... and now, part of their

included as secondary material for true integration of narrative
and information. It's a perfect introduction to this wonderful
emotion for families of all kinds. Ages 2-4

This book examines the paradox of creativity in art education and
proposes a possible resolution. Based on the findings of a
longitudinal ethnographic study as a particular case of creative
practice in art education, this book is underpinned by Bourdieu's
concepts of the habitus, symbolic capital and misrecognition. The
author offers an insightful account of social reasoning within
creative practice in the senior school art classroom, examining
ongoing exchanges between students and their teacher. Ultimately,
these exchanges culminate in actions, beliefs and desires about
what is creatively conceivable in the making of art, while
providing confirmation without corruption of the pedagogical role
of the art teacher. Allowing the context of creative agency to
emerge afresh, this book will be of interest and value to art
educators and teachers committed to fostering the creative
performances of students in any field.
Kate Greenaway's 'Mother Goose Or The Old Nursery Rhymes' was
originally published in 1881, it contains many nursery rhymes and
tales together with her beautiful illustrations. Many of the
earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the
1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works
in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original
text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of
children. About the Illustrator: Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was one
of the earliest contributors to children's literature and, along
with her contemporaries Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, was
amongst the most influential illustrators in the development of
children's colour picture books. Her collaboration in 1876 with
Edmund Evans who reproduced her paintings using hand-engraved wood
blocks brought her much popularity. She has enchanted people, young
and old, for over one hundred years with her watercolour
illustrations of sweet, charming eighteenth century children with
their quaint costumes and idyllic scenes. In recognition of her
lifetime work, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals of Great Britain established an award in her name in
1955 and to receive the Kate Greenaway Medal today is considered
the highest accolade a British illustrator can be given.

In the last decade alone, the world has changed in seismic ways as
marriage equality has been ruled on by the supreme court, social
justice issues such as #metoo and BlackLivesMatter have arisen, and
issues of immigration and deportation have come to the forefront of
politics across the globe. Thus, there is a need for an updated
text that shares strategies for combining canonical and young adult
literature that reflects the changes society has - and continues to
- experience. The purpose of our collection is to offer secondary
(6-12) teachers engaging ideas and approaches for pairing young
adult and canonical novels to provide unique examinations of topics
that teaching either text in isolation could not afford. Our
collection does not center canonical texts and most chapters show
how both texts complement each other rather than the young adult
text being only an extension of the canonical. Within each volume,
the chapters are organized chronologically according to the
publication date of the canonical text. The pairings offered in
this collection allow for comparisons in some cases, for extensions
in others, and for critique in all. Volume 2 covers The Canterbury
Tales (1392) through Fallen Angels (1988).
This Book Thinks You're an Artist is one of the rare books on the
market to combine art history with practical activities on the
page. It asks the reader to imagine their eccentric-artist
alter-ego before working through six key topics: painting,
sculpture, illustration, decorative art, photography and
contemporary art. Each spread centres on a different technique for
producing a piece of art, and relates the activity back to a famous
artist or movement in a light-hearted and playful tone. Activities
include making a Bruegel circus, playing a Surrealist game, selling
a scribble for a million pounds and painting your face like a
Russian Futurist. A section of paper-based crafts at the end of the
book includes a kit to build a camera obscura.
If you are searching for ideas to teach social studies in fun and
meaningful ways, 50 Ways to Teach Social Studies is a book that

real-world topics that will save the busy teacher time and effort.

content connections (civics, history, geography, economics),
guiding questions, and literacy connections. From community,
primary sources, and music to food, visual media, and experiential
learning, this book will inspire you to make connections in your
own environment to expand the teaching of social studies.

With the aim to help teachers design and deliver instruction around
world films featuring child protagonists, Cultivating Creativity
through World Films guides readers to understand the importance of
fostering creativity in the lives of youth. It is expected that by
teaching students about world films through the eyes of characters
that resemble them, they will gain insight into cultures that might
be otherwise unknown to them and learn to analyze what they see.
Teachers can use these films to examine and reflect on differences
and commonalities rooted in culture, social class, gender,
language, religion, etc., through guided questions for class
discussion. The framework of this book is conceived to help
teachers develop students' ability to evaluate, analyze, synthesize
and interpret. The proposed activities seek to incite reflection
and creativity in students, and can be used as a model for teachers
in designing future lessons on other films.

This book problematizes the role of education in an increasingly
mediatized world through the lenses of creativity, new media, and
consumerism. At the core of the issue, the author argues,
creativity in art education is being co-opted to serve the purposes
of current economic trends towards designer capitalism. Using an
East meets West approach, jagodzinski draws on Deleuze and
Guattarian philosophy to explore visual and popular culture in
Korean society, addressing the tensions that exist between designer
education and art that explores the human condition. In doing so,
he challenges art educators to envision a new paradigm for
education which questions established media ontologies and
incorporates new ways to confront the crisis of the Anthropocene.
Giving students opportunities to read like mathematicians as they
explore content has the potential to move their thinking and
understandings in monumental ways. Each chapter presented in this
volume provides readers with approaches and activities for pairing
a young adult novel with specific mathematics concepts. Chapters
include several instructional activities for before, during, and
after reading as well as extension activities that move beyond the
text as students continue to develop mathematical literacy.
