Ten Lectures on Language, Cognition, and Language Acquisition (Hardcover): Melissa Bowerman Ten Lectures on Language, Cognition, and Language Acquisition (Hardcover)
Melissa Bowerman; Edited by (consulting) Clarissa Schuur, Eva Bowerman, Christy Burow
R3,319 Discovery Miles 33 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In her Beijing lectures, Melissa Bowerman presents a lucid introduction and account of her research on a range of topics: how children acquire the semantics of spatial terms, how they construct categories and acquire the semantics of nouns, and how they master the semantics of verbs in early language acquisition. Bowerman also covers the learning of argument structure and expressions of end-state, with special attention to the adult speech that guides children, and hence also the role of typology in acquisition; how cross-linguistic variation affects, for example, how speakers represent 'cutting' and 'breaking' in different languages, and the relation of the Whorfian Hypothesis to cross-linguistic variations in the semantics of languages. Bowerman's over-riding concern throughout is with how children come to master the first language being spoken to them by their parents and caregivers.

Evolution of Semantic Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Bernd-Olaf Kuppers, Udo Hahn, Stefan Artmann Evolution of Semantic Systems (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Bernd-Olaf Kuppers, Udo Hahn, Stefan Artmann
R3,341 Discovery Miles 33 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Complex systems in nature and society make use of information for the development of their internal organization and the control of their functional mechanisms. Alongside technical aspects of storing, transmitting and processing information, the various semantic aspects of information, such as meaning, sense, reference and function, play a decisive part in the analysis of such systems. With the aim of fostering a better understanding of semantic systems from an evolutionary and multidisciplinary perspective, this volume collects contributions by philosophers and natural scientists, linguists, information and computer scientists. They do not follow a single research paradigm; rather they shed, in a complementary way, new light upon some of the most important aspects of the evolution of semantic systems. Evolution of Semantic Systems is intended for researchers in philosophy, computer science, and the natural sciences who work on the analysis or development of semantic systems, ontologies, or similar complex information structures. In the eleven chapters, they will find a broad discussion of topics ranging from underlying universal principles to representation and processing aspects to paradigmatic examples.

When Language Breaks Down - Analysing Discourse in Clinical Contexts (Hardcover): Elissa D. Asp, Jessica De Villiers When Language Breaks Down - Analysing Discourse in Clinical Contexts (Hardcover)
Elissa D. Asp, Jessica De Villiers
R1,770 R1,579 Discovery Miles 15 790 Save R191 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Doctors, nurses, and other caregivers often know what people with Alzheimer's disease or Asperger's 'sound like' - that is they recognise patterns in people's discourse, from sounds and silences, to words, sentences and story structures. Such discourse patterns may inform their clinical judgements and affect the decisions they make. However, this knowledge is often tacit, like recognising a regional accent without knowing how to describe its features. This is the first book to present models for comprehensively describing discourse specifically in clinical contexts and to illustrate models with detailed analyses of discourse patterns associated with degenerative (Alzheimer's) and developmental (autism spectrum) disorders. The book is aimed not only at advanced students and researchers in linguistics, discourse analysis, speech pathology and clinical psychology but also at researchers, clinicians and caregivers for whom explicit knowledge of discourse patterns might be helpful.

Meaning and Truth in African Philosophy - Doing African Philosophy with Language (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Grivas Muchineripi... Meaning and Truth in African Philosophy - Doing African Philosophy with Language (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Grivas Muchineripi Kayange
R2,880 Discovery Miles 28 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers a new way of doing African philosophy by building on an analysis of the way people talk. The author bases his investigation on the belief that traditional African philosophy is hidden in expressions used in ordinary language. As a result, he argues that people are engaging in a philosophical activity when they use expressions such as taboos, proverbs, idioms, riddles, and metaphors. The analysis investigates proverbs using the ordinary language approach and Speech Act theory. Next, the author looks at taboos using counterfactual logic, which studies the meaning of taboo expressions by departing from a consideration of their structure and use. He argues that the study of these figurative expressions using the counterfactual framework offers a particular understanding of African philosophy and belief systems. The study also investigates issues of meaning and rationality departing from a study on riddles, explores conceptual metaphors used in conceptualizing the notion of politics in modern African political thought, and examines language and marginalization of women and people with disabilities. The book differs from other works in African philosophy in the sense that it does not claim that Africans have a philosophy as is commonly done in most studies. Rather, it reflects and unfolds philosophical elements in ordinary language use. The book also builds African Conception of beauty and truth through the study of language.

Les mutations des discours mediatiques : approche contrastive et interculturelle (English, French, Hardcover, New edition):... Les mutations des discours mediatiques : approche contrastive et interculturelle (English, French, Hardcover, New edition)
Dominique Dias, Nadine Rentel
R1,314 Discovery Miles 13 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contextuality in Translation and Interpreting - Selected Papers from the Åódź-ZHAW Duo Colloquium on Translation and Meaning... Contextuality in Translation and Interpreting - Selected Papers from the Åódź-ZHAW Duo Colloquium on Translation and Meaning 2020–2021 (Hardcover, New edition)
Michał Kornacki, Gary Massey
R1,320 Discovery Miles 13 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The papers compiled in the present volume reflect the key theme of the most recent Duo Colloquium sessions – contextuality. The psychological notion of context has been central to translation research for decades, and it has evolved along with the development of translational thought, translation types and tools. The theme of contextuality can be understood at any level, from the geopolitical to the textual, and embraced by both academic and professional considerations of translational and interpreting phenomena. It is centred on context, contexts and/or decontextualisation in translation and interpreting theory and practice from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Discussing the above-mentioned notions is the subject of the present volume.

Semantics of Complex Words (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Laurie Bauer, Livia Koertvelyessy, Pavol Stekauer Semantics of Complex Words (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Laurie Bauer, Livia Koertvelyessy, Pavol Stekauer
R2,691 Discovery Miles 26 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume offers a valuable overview of recent research into the semantic aspects of complex words through different theoretical frameworks. Contributions by experts in the field, both morphologists and psycholinguists, identify crucial areas of research, present alternative and complementary approaches to their examination from the current level of knowledge, and indicate perspectives of research into the semantics of complex words by raising important questions that need to be investigated in order to get a more comprehensive picture of the field. Recent decades have seen both extensive and intensive development of various theories of word-formation, however, the semantic aspects of complex words have, with a few notable exceptions, been rather neglected. This volume fills that gap by offering articles written by leading experts in the field from various theoretical backgrounds.

Participation & Identity - Empirical Investigations of States and Dynamics (Hardcover, New edition): Alexander Brock, Janet... Participation & Identity - Empirical Investigations of States and Dynamics (Hardcover, New edition)
Alexander Brock, Janet Russell, Peter Schildhauer, Merle Willenberg
R1,313 Discovery Miles 13 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume focuses on the connection between participation constellations and identity construction as a specific, yet under-researched problem of text and media linguistics. It assembles empirical analyses of a wide range of corpora, ranging from naturally occurring talk-in-interaction over TV series and social media discourse to the linguistic landscapes of Namibia. In addition to insights into dynamic participation and identity constellations in the respective corpora, the articles develop new theoretical concepts and categories. This volume is of interest to advanced students and scholars in linguistics, media studies and sociology alike.

Language - From Meaning to Text (Paperback): Igor Mel'Cuk Language - From Meaning to Text (Paperback)
Igor Mel'Cuk; Edited by David Beck
R759 Discovery Miles 7 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents a sketch of the Meaning-Text linguistic approach, richly illustrated by examples borrowed mainly, but not exclusively, from English. Chapter 1 expounds the basic idea that underlies this approach-that a natural language must be described as a correspondence between linguistic meanings and linguistic texts-and explains the organization of the book. Chapter 2 introduces the notion of linguistic functional model, the three postulates of the Meaning-Text approach (a language is a particular meaning-text correspondence, a language must be described by a functional model and linguistic utterances must be treated at the level of the sentence and that of the word) and the perspective "from meaning to text" for linguistic descriptions. Chapter 3 contains a characterization of a particular Meaning-Text model: formal linguistic representations on the semantic, the syntactic and the morphological levels and the modules of a linguistic model that link these representations. Chapter 4 covers two central problems of the Meaning-Text approach: semantic decomposition and restricted lexical cooccurrence ( lexical functions); particular attention is paid to the correlation between semantic components in the definition of a lexical unit and the values of its lexical functions. Chapter 5 discusses five select issues: 1) the orientation of a linguistic description must be from meaning to text (using as data Spanish semivowels and Russian binominative constructions); 2) a system of notions and terms for linguistics (linguistic sign and the operation of linguistic union; notion of word; case, voice, and ergative construction); 3) formal description of meaning (strict semantic decomposition, standardization of semantemes, the adequacy of decomposition, the maximal block principle); 4) the Explanatory Combinatorial Dictionary (with a sample of complete lexical entries for Russian vocables); 5) dependencies in language, in particular-syntactic dependencies (the criteria for establishing a set of surface-syntactic relations for a language are formulated). Three appendices follow: a phonetic table, an inventory of surface-syntactic relations for English and an overview of all possible combinations of the three types of dependency (semantic, syntactic, and morphological). The book is supplied with a detailed index of notions and terms, which includes a linguistic glossary.

The Use of Definite and Indefinite Reference in Young Children - An Experimental Study of Semantic Acquisition (Paperback):... The Use of Definite and Indefinite Reference in Young Children - An Experimental Study of Semantic Acquisition (Paperback)
Michael M. Maratsos
R1,145 Discovery Miles 11 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book presents a series of studies that probe young children's knowledge of a relatively well-defined, abstract semantic realm, that of definite and indefinite reference. Topics investigated include children's knowledge of the difference between referring to particular objects (e.g. I have a dog, which refers to a particular dog) and no particular objects at all (e.g. I don't have a dog, which makes reference to no particular dog) and their knowledge of how to account for the knowledge of their listeners in situations, e.g. in which they have in mind a particular reference but their listen does not. Because overlapping problems are investigated by a wide variety of methods, it is possible to verify more certainly the true level of children's performance. At the same time, the investigation by many methods illustrates how methodological problems may systematically affect and at times even distort our picture of development if not carefully allowed for.

Marta Boguslawska, Alina Andreea Dragoescu Urlica, Lulzime Kamberi
R1,099 Discovery Miles 10 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent decades of studies have been human-centred while zooming in on cognition, verbal choices and performance. (...) [and] have provided interesting results, but which often veer towards quantity rather than quality findings. The new reality, however, requires new directions that move towards a humanism that is rooted in holism, stressing that a living organism needs to refocus in order to see the self as a part of a vast ecosystem. Dr Izabela Dixon, Koszalin University of Technology, Poland This volume is a collection of eight chapters by different authors focusing on ecolinguistics. It is preceded by a preface (..) underlin[ing] the presence of ecolinguistics as a newly-born linguistic theory and practice, something that explains the mosaic of content and method in the various chapters, with a more coherent approach being the aim for future research. Rhetoric of InSecurity - The Language of Danger, Fear and Safety in National and International Contexts (Paperback): Victoria... Rhetoric of InSecurity - The Language of Danger, Fear and Safety in National and International Contexts (Paperback)
Victoria Baines
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book demands that we question what we are told about security, using tools we have had for thousands of years. The work considers the history of security rhetoric in a number of distinct but related contexts, including the United States' security strategy, the "war" on Big Tech, and current concerns such as cybersecurity. Focusing on the language of security discourse, it draws common threads from the ancient world to the present day and the near future. The book grounds recent comparisons of Donald Trump to the Emperor Nero in a linguistic evidence base. It examines the potential impact on society of policy-makers' emphasis on the novelty of cybercrime, their likening of the internet to the Wild West, and their claims that criminals have "gone dark". It questions governments' descriptions of technology companies in words normally reserved for terrorists, and asks who might benefit. Interdisciplinary in approach, the book builds on existing literature in the Humanities and Social Sciences, most notably studies on rhetoric in Greco-Roman texts, and on the articulation of security concerns in law, international relations, and public policy contexts. It adds value to this body of research by offering new points of comparison, and a fresh but tried and tested way of looking at problems that are often presented as unprecedented. It will be essential to legal and policy practitioners, students of Law, Politics, Media, and Classics, and all those interested in employing critical thinking.

The Semantics of English Aspectual Complementation (Hardcover, 1979 ed.): A. F. Freed The Semantics of English Aspectual Complementation (Hardcover, 1979 ed.)
A. F. Freed
R2,748 Discovery Miles 27 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Complementation has received a great deal of attention in the past fifteen to twenty years; various approcahes have been used to study it and different groups of complement-taking verbs have been examined. The approach taken here employs analytic techniques which have not been systematically applied before to this group of temporal aspectual verbs. In other works which have concentrated on these same verbs (perlmutter, 1968, 1970 and Newmeyer, 1969a, 1969b) few insights about the semantic properties of the verbs are formalized. In the present study, the various verbs and their complement structures as they appear in surface forms are considered for their associated presuppositions and consequences (entailments). The notions of presup position and consequence are defmed and used so as to take conversational interaction into consideration. This adds considerably to the information that can be obtained about the verbs in question. Furthermore, the analysis of these temporal aspectual verbs leads to a description of their complement structures in terms of 'events', a semantic category found to appropriately characterize the quality of most of these structures. In this analysis, events are described as consisting of several different temporal segments; thus the sentences contained in the complements of these verbs are described as naming events, each containing one or more of several possible temporal segments. The aspectualizers in tum, act as referentials, each referring to one or another of the event-segments named in their complements."

Meaning and Speech Acts: Volume 2, Formal Semantics of Success and Satisfaction (Paperback): Daniel Vanderveken Meaning and Speech Acts: Volume 2, Formal Semantics of Success and Satisfaction (Paperback)
Daniel Vanderveken
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The primary units of meaning in the use and comprehension of language are speech acts of the type called illocutionary acts. In Foundations of Illocutionary Logic John Searle and Daniel Vanderveken presented the first formalized logic of a general theory of speech acts. In Meaning and Speech Acts Daniel Vanderveken further develops the logic of speech acts and the logic of propositions to construct a general semantic theory of natural languages. Volume I, Principles of Language Use, explains the general principles that connect meaning, reason, thought and speech acts in the semantic structure of language. It presupposes no detailed knowledge of logical formalism, and will be accessible to a large readership of students and scholars from philosophy, lingustics, cognitive psychology and computer science. Volume II, Formal Semantics of Success and Satisfaction uses the resources of philosophical and mathematical logics to develop a formalization of the laws of the semantic theory advanced in Volume I. It will be of interest to theoretical linguists and those involved in mathematical logic and artificial intelligence.

Particle Verbs in English - A Cognitive Linguistic Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Han Luo Particle Verbs in English - A Cognitive Linguistic Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Han Luo
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explains why cognitive linguistics offers a plausible theoretical framework for a systematic and unified analysis of the syntax and semantics of particle verbs. It explores the meaning of the verb + particle syntax, the particle placement of transitive particle verbs, how particle placement is related to idiomaticity, and the relationship between idiomaticity and semantic extension. It also offers valuable linguistic implications for future studies on complex linguistic constructions using a cognitive linguistic approach, as well as insightful practical implications for the learning and teaching of English particle verbs.

Competition in Inflection and Word-Formation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Franz Rainer, Francesco Gardani, Wolfgang U. Dressler,... Competition in Inflection and Word-Formation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Franz Rainer, Francesco Gardani, Wolfgang U. Dressler, Hans Christian Luschutzky
R4,645 Discovery Miles 46 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first volume specifically dedicated to competition in inflection and word-formation, a topic that has increasingly attracted attention. Semantic categories, such as concepts, classes, and feature bundles, can be expressed by more than one form or formal pattern. This departure from the ideal principle "one form - one meaning" is particularly frequent in morphology, where it has been treated under diverse headings, such as blocking, Elsewhere Condition, Panini's Principle, rivalry, synonymy, doublets, overabundance, suppletion and other terms. Since these research traditions, despite the heterogeneous terminology, essentially refer to the same underlying problems, this volume unites the phenomena studied in this field of linguistic morphology under the more general heading of competition. The volume features an extensive state of the art report on the subject and 11 research papers, which represent various theoretical approaches to morphology and address a wide range of aspects of competition, including morphophonology, lexicology, diachrony, language contact, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition.

The Rhetoric of the American Political Party Conventions, 1948-2016 (Hardcover): Theodore F Sheckels The Rhetoric of the American Political Party Conventions, 1948-2016 (Hardcover)
Theodore F Sheckels
R3,184 Discovery Miles 31 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Rhetoric of the American Political Party Conventions, 1948-2016 establishes the rhetorical goals of the thirty-six political party conventions that have taken place since 1948 against the backdrop of the fundamental changes that television brought to the conventions. Theodore F. Sheckels analyzes these conventions to determine whether the gatherings met or failed to meet those goals, including addressing civil rights, unifying divergent wings of the party, celebrating the triumph of a single wing, overcoming dissent inside and outside the meeting hall, overcoming-or capitalizing on-scandal, reconstituting the party after defeats, arguing for change, and advocating for inclusion. Sheckels observes that although speeches are the primary vehicle through which attendees strive to reach these goals, the crucial addresses are not always by the principal players; often, events other than speeches such as negotiations, demonstrations, and media spin can be just as consequential. Sheckels discusses both the similarities and differences in the ways in which the conventions do business and constitute and reconstitute what the political parties are, aiming to persuade the public with rhetorical images and messages. Scholars of communication, rhetoric, political science, and American studies will find this book particularly useful.
