Small Places, Large Issues - An Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology (Paperback, 5th edition): Thomas Hylland... Small Places, Large Issues - An Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology (Paperback, 5th edition)
Thomas Hylland Eriksen
R564 Discovery Miles 5 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This introduction to social and cultural anthropology has become a modern classic, revealing the rich global variation in social life and culture across the world. Presenting a clear overview of anthropology, it focuses on central topics such as kinship, ethnicity, ritual and political systems, offering a wealth of examples that demonstrate the enormous scope of anthropology and the importance of a comparative perspective. Using reviews of key works to illustrate his argument, for over 25 years Thomas Hylland Eriksen's lucid and accessible textbook has been a much respected and widely used undergraduate-level introduction to social anthropology. This fully updated fifth edition features brand new chapters on climate and medical anthropology, along with rewritten sections on ecology, nature and the Anthropocene. It also incorporates a more systematic engagement with gender and digitalisation throughout the text.

Europe in the Classroom - World Culture and Nation-Building in Post-Socialist Romania (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Simona Szakacs Europe in the Classroom - World Culture and Nation-Building in Post-Socialist Romania (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Simona Szakacs
R2,909 R1,911 Discovery Miles 19 110 Save R998 (34%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an unconventional account of post-1989 education reform in Romania. By drawing on policy documentation, interviews with key players, qualitative data from everyday school contexts, and extensive textbook analysis, this groundbreaking study explores change within the Romanian education system as a process that institutionalises world culture through symbolic mediation of the concept 'Europe'. The book argues that the education system's structural and organisational evolution through time is decoupled from its self-depiction by ultimately serving a nation-building agenda. It does so despite notable changes in the discourse reflecting increasingly transnational definitions of the mission of the school in the post-1989 era. The book also suggests that the notions of 'nation' and 'citizen' institutionalised by the school are gradually being redefined as cosmopolitan, matching post-war patterns of post-national affiliations on a worldwide level.

Women's Activism in the Islamic Republic of Iran - Political Alliance and the Formation of Deliberative Civil Society... Women's Activism in the Islamic Republic of Iran - Political Alliance and the Formation of Deliberative Civil Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Samira Ghoreishi
R3,599 Discovery Miles 35 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through an intersectional feminist re-reading of the Habermasian theoretical framework, this book analyses how women's activism has developed and operated in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Chapters look at three key areas of women's activism in Iran: how women deliberately engaged with media activism despite the government's controlling and repressive policies; women's involvement in civil society organisations, institutions and communities, and cooperation through multilevel activism; and women's activism in the political sphere and its connection with media and civil society activism despite the theocratic system. Drawing upon interviews, analyses of journal and newspaper articles and documentary/non-documentary films, as well as personal experiences, observations and communications, the book examines to what extent Iranian women's rights' groups and activists have collaborated not only with each other but with other social groups and activists to help facilitate the formation of a pluralist civil society capable of engaging in deliberative processes of democratic reform. This book will be of interest to scholars in Gender Studies and Middle Eastern Studies, particularly those who study women's and other social movements in Iran.

Reimagining the European Family - Cultures of Immigration (Hardcover): P. Simpson Reimagining the European Family - Cultures of Immigration (Hardcover)
P. Simpson
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The family remains a fundamental social, emotional, and economic unit, but it is undergoing change, especially in the European Union. Reimagining the Family explores contemporary films and literature about the effects of legal and illegal immigration on the structure and the stories of the contemporary 'European' family, with a focus on Germany. Multiple models, from nuclear to extended, local to transnational, encounter each other in statistics and in fictions. Narratives about work, love, generational difference, and conflicts among them alternately resist and embrace the influences of migration and immigration. Defining cosmopolitan identities in new and more inclusive ways, these stories of transnational families go beyond the demographic studies to expand the range of possibilities for understanding work, parenting, and citizenship in contemporary Europe.

Educational Research: Material Culture and Its Representation (Hardcover, 2014): Paul Smeyers, Marc Depaepe Educational Research: Material Culture and Its Representation (Hardcover, 2014)
Paul Smeyers, Marc Depaepe
R3,376 Discovery Miles 33 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection discusses and illustrates how educational research is affected by the economic, institutional and physical contingencies of its time, and in our time even increasingly is driven by them. It is argued that the antidote to this is, however, not to aspire to 'thought itself', but instead to do justice to its own rootedness in the 'material', including textuality. From an historical point of view such an innovative approach can itself revamp the material scholarly culture and the way it is represented. The chapters address a variety of topics such as the cultural heritage of the school desk, the significance of images for research into long-term educational processes, the way iconic signs function, and how modes of enquiry relate to the materiality of education. Attention is also given to standards for reporting on educational research studies and how these limit the scope and communication and moreover shape researchers, to the forms of citation practices as substantially influencing methods and content, and to the centrality of conversation not just as the means to an end but as what matters; further to representational and to non-representational theories for educational research. Some examples are drawn from the area of arts-based educational research, from mathematics education, and from the discourse on universities.

Ingo Juchler
R2,408 R1,691 Discovery Miles 16 910 Save R717 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyzes narrations embedded in political disputes, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of modern political reality. The author explores this theme in readings of the Sophocles tragedy Antigone, the Melian Dialogue of Thucydides, Heinrich von Kleist's novella Michael Kohlhaas, Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Grand Inquisitor and E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime novel, taking into account the relevant interdisciplinary aspects of the narratives. His study of these four narrations focuses on key political concepts, such as might and right, self-interest, legality and justice, the nation-state and democracy, and relates them compellingly to current actuality. Since narrations can exert comprehensive and lasting influence on individuals' political discernment, this systematic analysis allows for a better comprehension of politics in education and civics.

H Pant, Y. Joshi, Sowerbutts
R1,774 Discovery Miles 17 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

China's exponential rise and America's relative decline have led to a transition of power in contemporary Asia. The US pivot towards Asia is the most evident manifestation of such a transition, and Indian foreign policy shows signs of a hedging strategy, with attempts to strengthen ties with both China and the US.

Jonathan Wroot, Andy Willis
R4,007 Discovery Miles 40 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book demonstrates, in contrast to statistics that show declining consumption of physical formats, that there has not been a mass shift towards purely digital media. Physical releases such as special editions, DVD box-sets and Blu-Rays are frequently promoted and sought out by consumers. And that past formats such as VHS, Laserdisc and HD-DVD make for sought-after collectible items. These trends are also found within particular genres and niche categories, such as documentary, education and independent film distribution. Through its case studies, this collection makes a distinctive and significant intervention in highlighting the ways in which the film industry has responded to rapidly changing markets. This volume, global in scope, will prove useful to those studying the distribution and exhibition of films, and the economics of the film industry around the world.

#MeToo, Weinstein and Feminism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Karen Boyle #MeToo, Weinstein and Feminism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Karen Boyle
R1,737 Discovery Miles 17 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a feminist analysis of #MeToo and the sexual assault allegations against celebrity perpetrators which have emerged since the Weinstein story of October 2017. It argues for the importance of understanding #MeToo in relation to an on-going history of Anglo-American feminist activism, theory and interdisciplinary research. Boyle investigates how speaking out about rape, sexual assault and harassment on social media can be understood in relation to second-wave feminist traditions of consciousness-raising. Her argument explores the media depiction of feminism - and feminists - in the wake of Weinstein and the cultural values associated with men's abuse, particularly within the film and television industries. The book concludes with an exploration of what the #MeToo era has meant for men as victims/survivors and as alleged perpetrators, in relation to narratives of victimisation and of monstrosity.

Christian Encounters with the Other (Hardcover, New): John C. Hawley Christian Encounters with the Other (Hardcover, New)
John C. Hawley
R2,573 Discovery Miles 25 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why does Christianity feel the need to impose its customs and beliefs on the rest of the world? And why has an impulse driven at least partially by sincere concern for the "salvation" of others so often played into the hands of ruthless colonizers with more cynical aims?

Bringing together scholars in literature, history, and religion, Christian Encounters with the Other Approaches these questions by analyzing literary accounts of historically famous sites of conversion. Covering the Renaissance through to the present and spanning much of the globe, the volume discusses a range of authors and their works--from Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Stephen Riggs's ethnographic representations of the Sioux, to Salvation Army pamphleteers and Victorian missionaries, to China, to the works of Cameroonian novelist Mongo Beti, Guatemalan Nobel laureate Rigoberta Menchu, and Japanese novelist Shusaku Endo.

Using a cultural studies approach, each account discusses the missionaries' intentions, how these were perceived, and what social forces helped to shape the messages that were preached, as well as fascinating accounts of counter-conversions, in which "the other" is not only exoticized but valorized and empowered."

The Hidden Among the Hidden - African-American Elder Male Caregivers (Hardcover): Helen K. Black, John T. Groce, Charles E.... The Hidden Among the Hidden - African-American Elder Male Caregivers (Hardcover)
Helen K. Black, John T. Groce, Charles E. Harmon
R1,898 Discovery Miles 18 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The growing number of elder men providing hands-on care to loved ones, particularly spouses, undeniably represents a hidden segment of the home care population. With that in consideration, caregiving in communities of color, in particular, is increasing while numbers of informal (unpaid) caregivers are projected to triple by 2030. Despite statistics, studies on African-American men who care for other elders (such as spouses and parents) - indeed, "the hidden among the hidden" - are negligible. This text follows a study conducted by Helen Black, a research scientist focusing on aging, alongside John Groce and Charles Harmon, founders of Mature Africans Learning from Each Other (M.A.L.E.), in which they interviewed elderly African-American men in caregiver roles. As a whole, The Hidden Among the Hidden is unique in its study of caregiving in the areas of subject matter, methodology, and presentation of findings. The men whose attitudes and behaviors toward caregiving are recorded in this book share a wealth of knowledge for other caregivers, gerontologists, healthcare professionals, students, and the community in general.

R3,326 Discovery Miles 33 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers the first comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the way Chinese humor fits into broader discourses on Chinese identity and modernity in an increasingly globalized world throughout the period of modern China. It brings together the expertise of scholars from a variety of disciplines - history, literature, linguistics, anthropology, sociology and the study of popular culture - to examine the many forms and modes in which political humor is expressed in modern China: films, cartoons, the visual arts, oral performances and online satire.

Britain After Empire - Constructing a Post-War Political-Cultural Project (Hardcover): P. Preston Britain After Empire - Constructing a Post-War Political-Cultural Project (Hardcover)
P. Preston
R1,513 Discovery Miles 15 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tracking the intermingled intellectual and moral response of elites and masses to the loss of empire in the years following the end of the Second World War, this book explores how the elite in Britain sought to fashion a new identity for itself, how this was promulgated amongst the wider population and how ordinary people responded. These responses can be uncovered in elite designs including policies, plans, declarations; high art such as novels, theatre, fine arts and art-house films as well as through the medium of popular culture like radio, film, television, newspapers and magazines. These layers of meanings can be found in the slow development of the public sphere, as events produced reactions that laid down ideas that run into the present. The collective upshot has been the creation of a shifting, contested and finally unsustainable idea of what it is to be 'British'.

Lives of Muslims in India - Politics, Exclusion and Violence (Hardcover): Abdul Shaban Lives of Muslims in India - Politics, Exclusion and Violence (Hardcover)
Abdul Shaban
R4,282 Discovery Miles 42 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fast consolidating identities along religious and ethnic lines in recent years have considerably 'minoritised' Muslims in India. The wide-ranging essays in this volume focus on the intensified exclusionary practices against Indian Muslims, highlighting how, amidst a politics of violence, confusing policy frameworks on caste and class lines, and institutionalised riot systems, the community has also suffered from the lack of leadership from within. At the same time, they have emerged as a 'mass' around which the politics of 'vote bank', 'appeasement', 'foreigners', 'Pakistanis within the country', etc. are innovated and played upon, making them further apprehensive about asserting their legitimate right to development. The important issue of the double marginalisation of Muslim women and attempts to reform the Muslim Personal Law by some civil society groups is also discussed. Contributed by academics, activists and journalists, the articles thus discuss issues of integration, exclusion and violence, and attempt to understand categories like 'identity', 'minority', 'multiculturalism', and 'nationalism' with regard to and in the context of Indian Muslims. The volume will be of great interest to those in sociology, politics, history, cultural studies, minority studies, Islamic studies, policy studies, geography, etc.

Strategies of Transformation Toward a Multicultural Society - Fulfilling the Story of Democracy (Hardcover): David T. Abalos Strategies of Transformation Toward a Multicultural Society - Fulfilling the Story of Democracy (Hardcover)
David T. Abalos
R2,763 Discovery Miles 27 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How can the culturally diverse communities of America live justly and fruitfully together? Not by assimilation into the dominant culture -- nor by fighting for the freedom to pursue our own self-interest at the cost of our repressing both the wounds and the promising potential of our own cultural roots. This book offers a theory and practice of transformation that shows, especially through literature, education, and politics, how we can create a multicultural society that liberates our being as a fulfillment of the story of democracy. Perhaps for the first time in American history we are seeing the personal, political, historical, and sacred faces of women, people of color, and all ethnic groups as they tell their stories. It is this emerging scholarship that constitutes the new multicultural and feminine face of the story of democracy.

Emiratization in the UAE Labor Market - Opportunities and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Georgia Daleure Emiratization in the UAE Labor Market - Opportunities and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Georgia Daleure
R2,775 Discovery Miles 27 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book combines classic and recent studies investigating challenges to Emiratization - full employment of Emirati nationals who make up only about 10% of the total workforce - in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The book offers a comprehensive overview of the events leading to the country's rapid growth and development, as well as important social and cultural issues arising as the country transitioned from an isolated traditional economy to an open globalized one, and explores the specific challenges of incorporating Emiratis in their own vibrant economy. This topic is of interest to scholars, policymakers, and those considering investing or seeking employment in the UAE since it emerged as a Western-friendly, politically stable, and prospering oil-producing country in a region plagued by political, social, and economic turmoil.

France in Focus - Film and National Identity (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Elizabeth Ezra, Sue Harris France in Focus - Film and National Identity (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Elizabeth Ezra, Sue Harris
R4,042 Discovery Miles 40 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings together the work of leading film scholars from the UK, France and the US who assess a dominant art form's engagement with expressions of national identity at key moments in French cinematic history, from its origins at the end of the nineteenth century, through the inter-war period, the Occupation, the post-Liberation era, and the New Wave, up to the current state of the industry. The essays go against the grain in their attempts to construct an alternative history of French cinema, whether by bringing to light overlooked films or by examining well-known, indeed even 'over-exposed' films or filmmakers in a new light. In re-evaluating the work of Georges MEliEs, Jacques Becker, Jean Renoir, Diane Kurys, FranAois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Jacques Beineix, the contributors to this volume focus on the paradoxical centrality of the marginal in constructions of national identity. In doing so, they reveal the structure of 'l'exception franAaise', in which French culture makes an exception for itself by suppressing alterity within it. This multi-faceted assessment of French visual culture and identity will be of interest to students and scholars in French studies, media and film studies, cultural studies and French history.

The Migration and Politics of Monsters in Latin American Cinema (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Gabriel Eljaiek-Rodriguez The Migration and Politics of Monsters in Latin American Cinema (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Gabriel Eljaiek-Rodriguez
R2,368 Discovery Miles 23 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Migration and Politics of Monsters in Latin America proposes a cinematic cartography of contemporary Latin American horror films that take up the idea of the American continent as a space of radical otherness, or monstrosity, and use it for political purposes. The book explores how Latin American film directors migrate foreign horror tropes to create cinematographic horror hybrids that reclaim and transform monstrosity as a form of historical rewriting. By emphasizing the specificities of the Latin American experience, this book contributes to broad scholarship on horror cinema, at the same time connecting the horror tradition with contemporary discussions on violence, migration, fear of immigrants, and the rewriting of colonial discourses.

Aspects of Management Planning for Cultural World Heritage Sites - Principles, Approaches and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Aspects of Management Planning for Cultural World Heritage Sites - Principles, Approaches and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Simon Makuvaza
R3,439 Discovery Miles 34 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every site that is inscribed on the World Heritage List (WHL) must have a management plan or some other management system. According to the UNESCO Operational Guidelines, the purpose of a management plan is to ensure the effective protection of the nominated property for present and future generations. This requirement was in part necessitated by the need to implement real systems of monitoring on the management of World Heritage Sites. Since its implementation in 2005, discussion on the function and the contents of management plans for World Heritage Sites has grown tremendously. The discussions have mainly been focused on the theoretical frameworks of World Heritage site management plans and proposals of practical guidelines for their implementation. This volume provides a platform for heritage practitioners, especially those working at Cultural World Heritage Sites, to put in writing their experiences and impressions about the implementation of site management plans at properties that are inscribed on the WHL. Cultural World Heritage Sites in this case refer to world heritage properties such as archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, religious sites and architectural structures. The book also seeks to examine the extent to which site management plans have been or are being implemented at Cultural World Heritage Sites.

Deviance in Neo-Victorian Culture - Canon, Transgression, Innovation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Saverio Tomaiuolo Deviance in Neo-Victorian Culture - Canon, Transgression, Innovation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Saverio Tomaiuolo
R2,231 Discovery Miles 22 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that 'deviance' represents a central issue in neo-Victorian culture, and that the very concept of neo-Victorianism is based upon the idea of 'diverging' from accepted notions regarding the nineteenth-century frame of mind. However, the study of the ways in which the Victorian age has been revised by contemporary authors does not only entail analogies with the present but proves - by introducing what is perhaps a more pertinent description of the nineteenth century - that it was much more 'deviant' than it is usually depicted and perceived. Deviance in Neo-Victorian Culture: Canon, Transgression, Innovation explores a wide variety of textual forms, from novels to TV series, from movies and graphic novels to visual art. The scholarly and educational purpose of this study is to stimulate readers to approach neo-Victorianism as a complex cultural phenomenon.

An Archaeology of Interaction - Network Perspectives on Material Culture and Society (Hardcover): Carl Knappett An Archaeology of Interaction - Network Perspectives on Material Culture and Society (Hardcover)
Carl Knappett
R3,427 Discovery Miles 34 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Think of a souvenir from a foreign trip, or an heirloom passed down the generations - distinctive individual artefacts allow us to think and act beyond the proximate, across both space and time. While this makes anecdotal sense, what does scholarship have to say about the role of artefacts in human thought? Surprisingly, material culture research tends also to focus on individual artefacts. But objects rarely stand independently from one another they are interconnected in complex constellations. This innovative volume asserts that it is such 'networks of objects' that instill objects with their power, enabling them to evoke distant times and places for both individuals and communities.
Using archaeological case studies from the Bronze Age of Greece throughout, Knappett develops a long-term, archaeological angle on the development of object networks in human societies. He explores the benefits such networks create for human interaction across scales, and the challenges faced by ancient societies in balancing these benefits against their costs. In objectifying and controlling artefacts in networks, human communities can lose track of the recalcitrant pull that artefacts exercise. Materials do not always do as they are asked. We never fully understand all their aspects. This we grasp in our everyday, unconscious working in the phenomenal world, but overlook in our network thinking. And this failure to attend to things and give them their due can lead to societal 'disorientation'.

Writing Friendship - A Reciprocal Ethnography (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Paloma Gay Y. Blasco, Liria Hernandez Writing Friendship - A Reciprocal Ethnography (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Paloma Gay Y. Blasco, Liria Hernandez
R2,557 Discovery Miles 25 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book tells the remarkable story of the friendship between Liria Hernandez, a Roma woman from Madrid, and Paloma Gay y Blasco, a non-Roma anthropologist. In this unique reciprocal experiment, the former informant returns the gaze to write about the anthropologist, her life and her environment. Through finely crafted and deeply moving text, Hernandez and Gay y Blasco suggest new ways of doing and writing anthropology. The dialogue between Hernandez and Gay y Blasco provides a courageous account of the entanglements and rewards of anthropological research. Drawing on letters, conversations, and fieldnotes gathered over twenty-five years, each of the authors talks about herself, the other, and the impact of anthropology on their two lives. They examine their intertwined trajectories as Spanish women and reflect on the challenges of devising their own reciprocal genre. Blending ethnography, life story and memoir, they undermine the dichotomy between author and subject around which scholarship still revolves.
