Digital Broadcasting - An Introduction to New Media (Hardcover): Jo Pierson, Joke Bauwens Digital Broadcasting - An Introduction to New Media (Hardcover)
Jo Pierson, Joke Bauwens
R3,705 Discovery Miles 37 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Digital Broadcasting presents an introduction to how the classic notion of 'broadcasting' has evolved and is being reinterpreted in an age of digitization and convergence. The book argues that 'digital broadcasting' is not a contradiction in terms, but-on the contrary-both terms presuppose and need each other. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary and international field of research and theory, it looks at current developments in television and radio broadcasting on the level of regulation and policy, industries and economics, production and content, and audience and consumption practices.

New Directions for Catholic Social and Political Research - Humanity vs. Hyper-Modernity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Guido... New Directions for Catholic Social and Political Research - Humanity vs. Hyper-Modernity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Guido Giacomo Preparata
R3,423 Discovery Miles 34 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers scholars who ground their research in compassion and pacifism a new framework for the socio-political analysis of current global events. By tackling a broad range of critical themes in various disciplines, the essays compose a critical narrative of the ways in which power and violence shape society, culture, and belief. In addition to the contemporary dynamics of international economics, political murder, and the rhetorical antagonism between Christianity and Islam, the book addresses cultural strife in the West, the societal effects of neoconservative hegemony in the United States and the world, and the overall question of religious credence in connection with political action. All such topics are discussed with a view toward providing solutions and policies that are informed by a comprehensive desire to resist violence and war, on the one hand, and to foment cohesion and harmony at the community level, on the other.

Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric (Hardcover, New): Barry Brummett Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric (Hardcover, New)
Barry Brummett
R2,754 Discovery Miles 27 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intellectuals today cringe when a politician speaks of the Second Coming, the millennium, or the Antichrist. Certain questions naturally arise about those who literally expect the end of the world in our day: Why do they think this? Why do some people believe them? How do their exhortations work to persuade an audience and to move that audience to actions and commitments? These are the motivating questions of Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric, which describes "apocalyptic" as a rhetorical genre of discourse. Barry Brummett first recasts insights drawn from past scholarly and theological studies to demonstrate their relevance to contemporary apocalyptic, then examines a variety of "real" apocalyptic to illustrate the ways in which these rhetorical discourses actually work. The discussion focuses on those strategies, arguments, and stylistic features that are peculiar to apocalyptic and that support its social and political claims. Following an introductory first chapter, Chapter Two describes how apocalyptic rhetoric links a psychological context to an esoteric "grand order" underlying all of time and the cosmos. Chapter Three compares premillennial and postmillennial apocalyptic on three dimensions to show the different approaches they take to reach their audiences. Chapter Four describes specific rhetorical techniques designed to maintain a mystic persona and urge social and political commitments on audiences. The final two chapters apply the author's theories to secular and religious apocalyptic, both premillennial (Hal Lindsey and Ravi Batra) and postmillennial (Francis Fukuyama). Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric will appeal to readers across many disciplines, includingcommunications, religion, sociology, and psychology.

Globalization and Latin American Cinema - Toward a New Critical Paradigm (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Sophia A. McClennen Globalization and Latin American Cinema - Toward a New Critical Paradigm (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Sophia A. McClennen
R5,526 Discovery Miles 55 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Studying the case of Latin American cinema, this book analyzes one of the most public - and most exportable- forms of postcolonial national culture to argue that millennial era globalization demands entirely new frameworks for thinking about the relationship between politics, culture, and economic policies. Concerns that globalization would bring the downfall of national culture were common in the 1990s as economies across the globe began implementing neoliberal, free market policies and abolishing state protections for culture industries. Simultaneously, new technologies and the increased mobility of people and information caused others to see globalization as an era of heightened connectivity and progressive contact. Twenty-five years later, we are now able to examine the actual impact of globalization on local and regional cultures, especially those of postcolonial societies. Tracing the full life-cycle of films and studying blockbusters like City of God, Motorcycle Diaries, and Children of Men this book argues that neoliberal globalization has created a highly ambivalent space for cultural expression, one willing to market against itself as long as the stories sell. The result is an innovative and ground-breaking text suited to scholars interested in globalization studies, Latin-American studies and film studies.

Religious Identities and the Global South - Porous Borders and Novel Paths (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Felix Wilfred Religious Identities and the Global South - Porous Borders and Novel Paths (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Felix Wilfred
R3,637 Discovery Miles 36 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary account of religious identities in the Global South. Drawing on literature in various fields, Felix Wilfred analyzes how religious identities intersect with the processes of globalization, modernity, and postmodernity. He illustrates how the study of religion in the Global North often revolves around questions of secularism and fundamentalism, whereas a neo-Orientalist quality often attends study of religion in the Global South. These approaches and theorizing fail to incorporate the experiences of lived religion in the South, especially in Asia. Historically, the religions in the South have played a highly significant role in resistance to the domination by the colonial forces, an important reason for the continued attachment of the peoples of the South to their religious universe. This book puts the two regions and their scholarly norms in conversation with one another, exploring the social, political, cultural, and economic implications.

The Digital City and Mediated Urban Ecologies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Kristin Scott The Digital City and Mediated Urban Ecologies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Kristin Scott
R3,293 Discovery Miles 32 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the phenomenon of the "digital city" in the US by looking at three case studies: New York City, San Antonio, and Seattle. Kristin Scott considers how digital technologies are increasingly built into the logic and organization of urban spaces and argues that while each city articulates ideals such as those of open democracy, civic engagement, efficient governance, and enhanced security, competing capitalist interests attached to many of these digital technological programs make the "digital city" problematic.

Well-Being of Youth and Emerging Adults across Cultures - Novel Approaches and Findings from Europe, Asia, Africa and America... Well-Being of Youth and Emerging Adults across Cultures - Novel Approaches and Findings from Europe, Asia, Africa and America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Radosveta Dimitrova
R2,905 Discovery Miles 29 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The current volume presents new empirical data on well-being of youth and emerging adults from a global international perspective. Its outstanding features are the focus on vast geographical regions (e.g., Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America), and on strengths and resources for optimal well-being. The international and multidisciplinary contributions address the complexities of young people's life in a variety of cultural settings to explore how key developmental processes such as identity, religiosity and optimism, social networks, and social interaction in families and society at large promote optimal and successful adaptation. The volume draws on core theoretical models of human development to highlight the applicability of these frameworks to culturally diverse youth and emerging adults as well as universalities and cultural specifics in optimal outcomes. With its innovative and cutting-edge approaches to cultural, theoretical and methodological issues, the book offers up-to-date evidence and insights for researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the fields of cross-cultural psychology, developmental science, human development, sociology, and social work.

Scandal in a Digital Age (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Hinda Mandell, Gina Masullo Chen Scandal in a Digital Age (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Hinda Mandell, Gina Masullo Chen
R2,346 R1,911 Discovery Miles 19 110 Save R435 (19%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the way today's interconnected and digitized world--marked by social media, over-sharing, and blurred lines between public and private spheres--shapes the nature and fallout of scandal in a frenzied media environment. Today's digitized world has erased the former distinction between the public and private self in the social sphere. Scandal in a Digital Age marries scholarly research on scandal with journalistic critique to explore how our Internet culture driven by (over)sharing and viral, visual content impacts the occurrence of scandal and its rapid spread online through retweets and reposts. No longer are examples of scandalous behavior "merely" reported in the news. Today, news consumers can see the visual evidence of salacious behavior whether through an illicit tweet or video with a simple click. And we can't help but click.

Journalism and Memory (Hardcover, New): B. Zelizer, K. Tenenboim-Weinblatt Journalism and Memory (Hardcover, New)
B. Zelizer, K. Tenenboim-Weinblatt
R1,514 Discovery Miles 15 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although journalism has always been an important vehicle of collective memory, it has been neglected in discussions about how memory works. This fascinating book aims to correct that disjuncture, by tracking the ways in which journalism and shared memory mutually support, undermine, repair and challenge each other. How is journalism's address to memory different from that of other institutions? What would the study of memory look like without journalism? And how would our understanding of journalism fall short without paying attention to memory? Bringing together leading scholars in journalism and memory studies, this collection makes explicit the longstanding and complicated role that journalism has played in keeping the past alive. From anniversary issues and media retrospectives to simple verbal and visual analogies connecting past and present, journalism incorporates an address to earlier times across the wide array of its conventions and practices. How it does so and which triumphs and problems ensue in our understanding of collective memory constitute the charter of this volume.

Marie-Theres Albert, Francesco Bandarin, Ana Pereira Roders
R4,869 Discovery Miles 48 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume looks at sustainable protection and sustainable use of cultural and natural heritage, particularly in view of the current challenges of the 21st century. For more than 40 years the World Heritage Convention has regulated the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of humankind, particularly in that heritage shall be protected if it is threatened by modern development. The international community has also adopted sustainability and sustainable development, as objectives to facilitate the protection of cultural and natural heritage. Sustainable heritage protection and use must therefore be preserved in the face of the global challenges it faces and must be perceived in terms of societal, political and corresponding economic paradigms.

The Cowboy Way - The Western Leader in Film, 1945-1995 (Hardcover, New): Robert J Higgs, Ralph L. Turner The Cowboy Way - The Western Leader in Film, 1945-1995 (Hardcover, New)
Robert J Higgs, Ralph L. Turner
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Analyzing a sample of 25 films, including such notables as "Red River," "Shane," "Unforgiven," "The Wild Bunch," "Wyatt EarP," and "Dances with Wolves," this work examines traditional leadership theories as reflected in the western film genre. The western vividly portrays a variety of leadership styles, motifs, and characteristics giving perspective on several traditional leadership theories. The different leadership styles the films exhibit are categorized and described through content analysis. Some of the concepts and underlying theories and styles reveal a universal quality about leadership that transcends theoretical research. As a cultural study that traces the relative popularity of leadership styles, this work provides new insight toward studying leadership effectiveness.

Through the lens of leadership theory, this unique look at the western films from 1945 to 1995 and the American culture they depict will appeal not only to leadership, film, and popular culture scholars but to leaders in business, government, and the military. Chapters group films by their similar depiction of leadership styles. Within each chapter the films are separately described, then each is explored within the context of leadership theory. Films prior to 1980 are included on the basis of their critical or commercial success, while films after 1980 are included on the basis of their box office success or their individual portrayals of gender or cultural leadership.

Kelly Jones, Benjamin Poore, Robert Dean
R3,386 Discovery Miles 33 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This ground-breaking volume is the first of its kind to examine the extraordinary prevalence and appeal of the Gothic in contemporary British theatre and performance. Chapters range from considerations of the Gothic in musical theatre and literary adaptation, to explorations of the Gothic's power to haunt contemporary playwriting, macabre tourism and site-specific performance. By taking familiar Gothic motifs, such as the Gothic body, the monster and Gothic theatricality, and bringing them to a new contemporary stage, this collection provides a fresh and comprehensive take on a popular genre. Whilst the focus of the collection falls upon Gothic drama, the contents of the book will embrace an interdisciplinary appeal to scholars and students in the fields of theatre studies, literature studies, tourism studies, adaptation studies, cultural studies, and history.

Eco-Literature - Contemporary Discourses (Hardcover): Candy D'cunha Sr., Ken Saldanha Eco-Literature - Contemporary Discourses (Hardcover)
Candy D'cunha Sr., Ken Saldanha
R3,740 Discovery Miles 37 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Awareness of eco-literature has recalled the central ideology of environmentalism - "to think globally and act locally." As this volume shows, various tags of contemporary discourse have emerged, including transnational, cosmopolitan, hybridity, diaspora, and generally cultural. These concerns highlight such global environmental problems as biodiversity, climate change, and developing new forms of interconnectedness with local and regional communities. In this context, contemporary discourse becomes of immediate concern in understanding the environmental crisis. In a way, reading different cultures and experiences can contribute to a contemporary discourse that can facilitate an environmental sensibility and develop a unique ecological approach.

The Urbanization of Injustice (Hardcover, New): Andy Merrifield, Erik Swyngedouw The Urbanization of Injustice (Hardcover, New)
Andy Merrifield, Erik Swyngedouw
R2,578 Discovery Miles 25 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the advent of AIDS, the proliferation of gangs and drugs, and the uneasy sensation that Big Brother is actually watching us, the dark side of urban living seems to be overshadowing the brighter side of pleasure, liberation, and opportunity.

The Urbanization of Injustice chronicles these bleak urban images, while taking to task exclusivist politics, globalization theory, and superficial environmentalism. Exploring the links between urbanism, power, and justice, The Urbanization of Injustice presents the thoughts and theories of Edward Soja, David Harvey, Marshall Bermann, Doreen Masey, Sharon Zukin, Susan Fainstein, Ira Katznelson, Nell Smith, and Michael Keith in one cohesive volume, bringing us one step closer to genuinely humane and socially just urban practices.

The Revolutionary War Era (Hardcover, New): Randall Huff The Revolutionary War Era (Hardcover, New)
Randall Huff
R2,008 Discovery Miles 20 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume in Greenwood's American Popular Culture through History series recreates the many ways in which a new American culture took root during the Revolutionary period. Tavern culture and pamphlet literature played integral parts in debates surrounding the Revolution. Newspapers spread information while printing the first advertisements. Courtship and marriage rituals varied greatly among the rich and poor, and among city and country folk. Public performance art was a hotly debated component of the increased schism between secular and religious concerns, though many Americans enjoyed recreations of recent military battles. Foodways were distinctly regional, yet food rationing was a universal hardship among army personnel. Randall Huff's narrative essays, as well as many extra front- and back-matter resources, help describe citizen's lives in the newly formed United States of America as the nation fought to win its independence. American Popular Culture through Historyis the only reference series that presents a detailed, narrative discussion of United States popular culture. This volume is one of 17 in the series, each of which presents essays on Everyday America, The World of Youth, Advertising, Architecture, Fashion, Food, Leisure Activities, Literature, Music, Performing Arts, Travel, and Visual Arts.

Poetics of Opposition in Contemporary Spain - Politics and the Work of Urban Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Jonathan Snyder Poetics of Opposition in Contemporary Spain - Politics and the Work of Urban Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Jonathan Snyder
R1,871 Discovery Miles 18 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pairing cultural analysis in urban contexts with interdisciplinary approaches to political culture, this book argues that recent cultural production in Spain grapples with the conditions and possibilities for social transformation in dialogue with the ongoing crisis, neoliberal governance, and political culture in Spain's democratic history.

Culture, Entertainment, and the Bible (Hardcover): George Aichele Culture, Entertainment, and the Bible (Hardcover)
George Aichele
R5,681 Discovery Miles 56 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This topical volume deals with the adoption of biblical language and narrative and the presentation of 'biblical' images and themes in popular literature, art and mass media. The chapters, all written by experts in cultural studies of the Bible, explore how ideologies are produced, in various ways, when biblical texts are brought into play with each other, with other texts, and with the inevitable and continual demands for cultural and historical "translation"-or "recycling"-of the scriptures. The volume contains some theoretical reflections, but focuses on specific examples of cultural translation, and is directed primarily at advanced (graduate) students and scholars in biblical studies, popular studies, media studies, literature, and the arts, although some articles will also be of value and interest to introductory students and the general public. The contributors to this volume are Fiona Black, Susan Lochrie Graham, Chris Heard, Helen Leneman, Phyllis Silverman Kramer, Tina Pippin, Caroline Vader Stichele, Lori Rowlett, Erin Runions, Jan William Tarlin and Richard Walsh.

FUN! - What Entertainment Tells Us About Living a Good Life (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Alan McKee FUN! - What Entertainment Tells Us About Living a Good Life (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Alan McKee
R2,086 Discovery Miles 20 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Combining media effects with aesthetic approaches this book offers the first substantial, systematic and coherent account of fun and its importance. But what exactly is fun and what purposes does it serve? Fun is a vital element of entertainment, and entertainment is the most important form of culture in modern Western democracies. It demonstrates that fun is at the heart of entertainment's effects - entertainment both offers its consumers fun and provides them with the intellectual materials to think about the nature of fun. More than this, the book argues that entertainment shows us that fun - pleasure without purpose - is at the heart of living a good life. Illustrated with detailed examples from entertainment - from the Urban Dictionary to The Simpsons, to the Culture novels of Iain M Banks - this book is intelligent, original, and even (dare we say it) fun.

The First Freedoms and America's Culture of Innovation - The Constitutional Foundations of the Aspirational Society... The First Freedoms and America's Culture of Innovation - The Constitutional Foundations of the Aspirational Society (Hardcover)
Narain D. Batra
R2,613 Discovery Miles 26 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a book about the dynamics of the aspirational society. It explores the boundaries of permissible thought--deviations and transgressions that create constant innovations. When confronted with a problem, an innovative mind struggles and brings forth something distinctive--new ideas, new inventions, and new programs based on unconventional approaches to solve the problem. But this can be done only if the culture creates large breathing spaces by leaving people alone, not as a matter of state generosity but as something fundamental in being an American. Consequently, the Constitutional mandate of "Congress shall make no law..." has encouraged fearless speech, unrestrained thought, and endless experimentation leading to newer developments in science, technology, the arts, and not least socio-political relations. Most of all, the First Freedoms liberate the mind from irrational fears and encourage an environment of divergent thinking, non-conformity, and resistance to a collective mindset. The First Freedoms encourage Americans to be iconoclastic, to be creatively crazy, to be impure, thus, enabling them to mix and re-mix ideas to design new technologies and cultural forms and platforms, anything from experimental social relations and big data explorations to electing our first black president.

In the fourth part, the book explains how existing disciplines relate to Image Studies and how this new scholarly field may be constructed using both old and new approaches and insights. The fifth chapter is dedicated to contemporary thinkers and is the first time that theses of the most prominent scholars of Image Studies are critically analyzed and presented in one place.

Comrades in Arms - Military Masculinities in East German Culture (Hardcover): Tom Smith Comrades in Arms - Military Masculinities in East German Culture (Hardcover)
Tom Smith
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Without question, the East German National People's Army was a profoundly masculine institution that emphasized traditional ideals of stoicism, sacrifice, and physical courage. Nonetheless, as this innovative study demonstrates, depictions of the military in the film and literature of the GDR were far more nuanced and ambivalent. Departing from past studies that have found in such portrayals an unchanging, idealized masculinity, Comrades in Arms shows how cultural works both before and after reunification place violence, physical vulnerability, and military theatricality, as well as conscripts' powerful emotions and desires, at the center of soldiers' lives and the military institution itself.

Sophia Chirongoma, Molly Manyonganise, Ezra Chitando
R4,362 Discovery Miles 43 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings to the fore the interface of religion, women's sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Zimbabwe. It emphasizes that empowering African women is a pivotal pillar for attaining sustainable development. Contributors discuss the need for implementing structural changes as a prerequisite for social progress and development to occur in Southern Africa. They interrogate the extent to which religious beliefs and practices either promote or impede women's SRHR. The contributors also proffer several ways in which addressing the themes of health for all and equality for all women and girls can make a meaningful contribution towards the fulfillment of the goals set for Agenda 2030.
