The Science of Life - Andrew Huxley, Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow (Hardcover): Alan Macfarlane The Science of Life - Andrew Huxley, Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow (Hardcover)
Alan Macfarlane; Series edited by Radha Beteille
R4,061 Discovery Miles 40 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Science of Life: Andrew Huxley, Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow is part of the series Creative Lives and Works. It is a collection of interviews conducted by one of England's leading social anthropologists and historians, Professor Alan Macfarlane. Filmed over a period of 40 years, the three conversations in this volume are part of a larger set of interviews that cut across various disciplines-from the social sciences, the sciences, to the performing and visual arts. The current volume on two of England's foremost physiologists and a vision scientist is yet another addition to the series of several such books. These Cambridge men of science, Sir Andrew Huxley, Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow, apart from shaping certain very fundamental and critical elements in the disciplines of Physiology and Neuroscience also belong to illustrious lineages. Sir Andrew Huxley, for instance is a direct descendant of T.H. Huxley, while Richard Keynes and Horace Barlow are both the great grandsons of Charles Darwin. Their conversations greatly expand our understanding of physiology and neuroscience. The book will be of very great value not just to those interested in Physiology, Medicine and Neuroscience. The interviews also take us into a fascinating period of Cambridge Science, dominated by certain key families of distinguished thinkers. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Bhutan).

Forensic Art Therapy - The Art of Investigating, Interviewing, and Testifying (Paperback): Marcia Cohen-Liebman Forensic Art Therapy - The Art of Investigating, Interviewing, and Testifying (Paperback)
Marcia Cohen-Liebman
R1,418 Discovery Miles 14 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Forensic Art Therapy is designed as an educational and informative resource for individuals from a diverse array of disciplines that engage in investigatory undertakings, interview victims and witnesses, and provide evidentiary testimony. The material presented serves as a primer for professionals that may potentially present in court on behalf of a client. Ethical issues inherent in the forensic arena and the use of novel scientific evidence in the form of drawing as well as legal proceedings, testimonial capability, and practical tips and strategies for effective witnessing are shared. Research regarding an art therapy-based investigative interview process, the Common Interview Guideline (CIG), examines the facilitative factor associated with the effect of drawing. When utilized as a primary resource within investigative interviews, drawing has the potential to offer support, promote empowerment and enhance disclosure. Understanding how drawing functions in investigative interviews and what it offers for the child, the team and the process contributes to on-going research and best practice. The text serves as a resource and a handbook for students and professionals that investigate and intervene when maltreatment is suspected including child protection, law enforcement, prosecution, advocacy, the judiciary, creative arts therapies, and allied practitioners in medicine and mental health.

Beyond Therapeutic Culture in Latin America - Hybrid Networks in Argentina and Brazil (Hardcover): Piroska Csuri, Mariano Ben... Beyond Therapeutic Culture in Latin America - Hybrid Networks in Argentina and Brazil (Hardcover)
Piroska Csuri, Mariano Ben Plotkin, Nicolas Viotti
R4,070 Discovery Miles 40 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

By focusing on quantitative and qualitative research in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, this book expands on the notion of "therapeutic culture." Usually considered a global phenomenon disseminated from North to South, and associated to "modern" forms of "psychologized" subjectivity, "therapeutic culture" has become a key notion to understanding contemporary culture. However, this path-breaking research, grounded in a bottom-up perspective that follows specific therapeutic narratives, shows that the concept of the "therapeutic" should be extended to encompass a diversity of practices, both "secular" and "religious," "modern" and "traditional," that are deemed as therapeutic by the actors involved, although they are overlooked as such by most of the current literature. Pentecostal and Afro-Brazilian religions as well as New Age practices coexist and interact with "conventional" therapeutic techniques such as Psychoanalysis, conforming complex and hybrid therapeutic networks associated to different (also hybrid) forms of subjectivity. Although the book draws upon two cases from the "Global South," its theoretical conclusions are applicable to the analysis of the realm of the therapeutic at large. The book is aimed at university students (both graduate and undergraduate) and at the general public interested in the notion of the therapeutic and, specifically, in Latin American culture.

The Politics of Remembrance in the Novels of Gunter Grass (Hardcover): Alex Donovan Cole The Politics of Remembrance in the Novels of Gunter Grass (Hardcover)
Alex Donovan Cole
R4,063 Discovery Miles 40 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This manuscript argues for the importance of Gunter Grass as a political thinker in addition to his status as a novelist and public intellectual, capable of forming ethical responses to contemporary issues like neoliberalism and place of the petit bourgeoisie in social life. I define Grass's trajectory as a thinker through his novels and speeches. Primarily, I draw attention to the role memory plays in Grass's thought: that his work represented an intellectual and aesthetic response to the role Nazism continued to play in West German politics in the post war era. To Grass, Nazism represented a resurgent threat unaddressed following the end of World War II. Later, Grass amended his concept of memory politics to address neoliberal capitalism, reiterating his radicalism and affirming the need for German society to resist the rise of extreme ideologies.

Myles Sweeney
R4,085 Discovery Miles 40 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second of two volumes, it introduces the UDT model and examines its application to organization development and change management. The book presents UDT comprising seven developmental levels, showing how using its methodical progression can help to avoid issues such as unsustainable growth and change failure while examining how the model improves collaboration, digital transformation, change management and team development. It shows how the model clinically transforms concepts such as culture which is often cited as the cause of failure for change, re-defining it as habituated maturation stage and simplifying culture change accordingly. This book is designed to accompany Volume 1 which details the psychology of the model and its equal applicability to mental-health recovery. Showing how UDT can be used as an overarching model to optimize organization development, this book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars and postgraduate students from the fields of organizational psychology, organization development and change management.

Models of Society and Complex Systems (Paperback): Sebastian Ille Models of Society and Complex Systems (Paperback)
Sebastian Ille
R1,416 Discovery Miles 14 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Models of Society and Complex Systems introduces readers to a variety of different mathematical tools used for modelling human behaviour and interactions, and the complex social dynamics that drive institutions, conflict, and coordination. What laws govern human affairs? How can we make sense of the complexity of societies and how do individual actions, characteristics, and beliefs interact? Social systems follow regularities which allow us to answer these questions using different mathematical approaches. This book emphasises both theory and application. It systematically introduces mathematical approaches, such as evolutionary and spatial game theory, social network analysis, agent-based modelling, and chaos theory. It provides readers with the necessary theoretical background of each toolset as well as the underlying intuition, while each chapter includes exercises and applications to real-world phenomena. By looking behind the surface of various social occurrences, the reader uncovers the reasons why social systems exhibit both cultural universals and at the same time a diversity of practices and norms to a degree that even surpasses biological variety, or why some riots turn into revolutions while others do not even make it into the news. This book is written for any scholar in the social sciences interested in studying and understanding human behaviour, social dynamics, and the complex systems of society. It does not expect readers to have a particular background apart from some elementary knowledge and affinity for mathematics.

Music in the Course of Life (Paperback): Joseph A. Kotarba Music in the Course of Life (Paperback)
Joseph A. Kotarba
R1,231 Discovery Miles 12 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book illustrates how social meanings provided by music are experienced throughout the course of life. To this end, the author examines in depth the concepts of self, identity, socialization, and the life course itself. Social scientists have traditionally focused on music experiences among different generations, one at a time, with an emphasis on young audiences. This book explores appreciation for and use of music as a dynamic process that does not begin when we enter adolescence, nor end when we become adults. It demonstrates the relationship between the experience of music and the experience of self as a fundamental feature of the more general relationship of the individual to society. Music completes the circle of life. The author bases his analysis on observations made through a variety of qualitative studies and methodologies, as well as his own music autobiography. Clear and jargon free, this book is a timely application of key concepts from the everyday life sociologies for scholars and students in the sociology of music and culture and other related disciplines such as anthropology and ethnomusicology. It will be of interest for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in culture, music, symbolic interaction, social psychology, and qualitative research methods.

Embodied Social Justice (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Rae Johnson Embodied Social Justice (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Rae Johnson
R4,069 Discovery Miles 40 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Embodied Social Justice introduces an embodied approach to working with oppression. Grounded in current research, the book integrates key findings from education, psychology, sociology, and somatic studies while addressing critical gaps in how these fields have addressed pervasive patterns of social injustice. At the heart of the book, a series of embodied narratives bring to life everyday experiences of oppression through evocative descriptions of how power implicitly shapes body image, interpersonal space, eye contact, gestures, and the use of touch. This second edition includes two new "body stories" from research participants living and working in the global South. Supplemental guidelines for practice, updated references, and new community resources have also been added. Designed for social workers, counselors, educators, and other human service professionals working with members of disenfranchised and marginalized communities, Embodied Social Justice offers a conceptual framework and model of practice to assist in identifying, unpacking, and transforming embodied experiences of oppression from the inside out.

Play, Exploration and Learning - A Natural History of the Pre-school (Hardcover): S. John Hutt, Stephen Tyler, Corinne Hutt,... Play, Exploration and Learning - A Natural History of the Pre-school (Hardcover)
S. John Hutt, Stephen Tyler, Corinne Hutt, Helen Christopherson
R3,661 Discovery Miles 36 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1989, Play, Exploration and Learning was a valuable contribution to the evaluation of nursery practice in Britain at the time, this 'natural history' of the activities of children and caring adults presents a comparative study of four types of provision for the under-fives: nursery schools, nursery classes, playgroups and day nurseries. All four types of provision are seen as happy, busy, caring environments, but they vary greatly in terms of staffing levels, training and material provision. The authors look at the 'play' of three- to five-year-old children and the activities of the adults who care for them. They examine in detail children's choices of materials and their use of them, with special attention given to the way language is used by both children and adults during play. They also describe adults' expectations of the various provisions and the values of the activities pursued in them. Of special interest is the emphasis placed by adults upon fantasy play, and the often large discrepancy between expectation and practice. Also covered are the difference in the play activities of part-time and full-time nursery school children, and the transition from pre-school to first school. The book will still be of historical interest to pre-school practitioners, to developmental psychologists and to educational administrators.

The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children (Hardcover): Susan Grohs Iwamura The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children (Hardcover)
Susan Grohs Iwamura
R2,947 Discovery Miles 29 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1980 The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children states that in the course of acquiring language, every child recognizes that verbal interaction is a powerful tool which can be used to interpret and manipulate the world. During the last previous two decades developments in the study of both language acquisition and linguistic theory had begun to illustrate that the acquisition of a first language involves considerably more than the mere learning of grammatical structure. This view of learning had led researchers gradually to see children as more than grammarians devising grammatical constructs. The tendency at the time was to see the child as an active partner in what are essentially games of communication and invention during which the rules of usage as well as the rules of grammar are discovered. This study is based on extensive and detailed observation of the verbal interaction of two pre-school children, and as such offers far-reaching ideas and conclusions concerning the manner in which all children determine the role of language in their lives, whilst simultaneously learning how to piece it together.
