Marginalisation and Events (Hardcover): Trudie Walters, Allan Stewart Jepson Marginalisation and Events (Hardcover)
Trudie Walters, Allan Stewart Jepson
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is the first to take an in-depth examination of marginalisation and events. Marginalisation has been the subject of academic research for some time now. However, little research has been carried out within the field of event studies. Using of a range of different theoretical and methodological approaches from a variety of disciplines, the volume applies a critical approach to events as they relate to marginalisation that seeks to address the 'how' and 'why', and to provide a holistic picture of their place and influence in the lives of marginalised individuals and communities. International through authorship and examples, it encompasses case studies from around the world, including South Africa, the United Kingdom, Italy, Afghanistan, the United States, Brazil, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand. This is essential reading for students and researchers in the fields of critical event studies, anthropology, cultural studies, tourism, sociology and management.

China's event market is full of dynamic and exciting developments, innovation, new players and novel ideas, but at the same time of certain shortcomings. R2,037 Discovery Miles 20 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility in Tourism - A Transformative Concept (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Dagmar... Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility in Tourism - A Transformative Concept (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Dagmar Lund-Durlacher, Valentina Dinica, Dirk Reiser, Matthias S Fifka
R4,943 Discovery Miles 49 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers essential insights into how the world's second largest industry, tourism, is responding to challenges involved in expanding the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept to corporate sustainability and responsibility, referred to as CSR 2.0. It analyzes the typical setup of tourism with various types of commercial agents: corporations, small and medium sized enterprises, public-private partnerships, social enterprises and local cooperatives. In addition, the book examines a broad range of voluntary initiatives, the effectiveness of these efforts, and how contextual and wider policy features shape these relationships. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which elaborates on strategic drivers and rationales for CSR. In turn, the second part introduces readers to design approaches for CSR programs and envisaged impacts, while part three focuses on implementation, certification, reporting, and possible outcomes. Each part offers a mixture of theoretical perspectives, synthesis analyses and case studies. The respective chapters tackle a broad spectrum of tourism sub-sectors, e.g. the cruise industry, aviation, gastronomy, nature-based tourism, and urban destinations.

Ralph Thomas Kam
R1,251 R904 Discovery Miles 9 040 Save R347 (28%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From the hiding of the bones of Kamehameha the Great, to the half-mile-long funeral procession of King Kamehameha III, to the somber return of the embalmed remains of King Kalakaua from San Francisco, Hawaii experienced changing responses to the deaths of Hawaiian royalty. Missionary journals, government publications, and articles in Hawaiian and English language newspapers provide the source material for the first comprehensive look at the transformation of funerary practices following permanent contact with the West. The documentary evidence tells the story of the adoption of new ways of honoring Hawaii royalty and the persistence of traditional practices. Although the funeral observances for British royalty provided an extravagant model for their Hawaii counterparts, indigenous practices survived. While mourners no longer knocked out their teeth or tattooed their tongues, other traditional forms-the mass wailing, feather standards, and composing of funeral dirges-continued well into the twentieth century. Besides the contemporaneous accounts, dozens of historic drawings and photographs provide rarely seen glimpses of the obsequies of the Kamehameha and Kalakaua dynasties. Burial locations, too, saw transformation as secret burial caves and thatched structures housing ancient bones gave way to coral sepulchers, Gothic mausoleums and underground crypts. The description of the burial sites includes the locations of the final resting places of the royalty of Hawaii.

R1,556 Discovery Miles 15 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The digital turn in leisure has opened up a vast array of new opportunities to play, learn, participate and be entertained - opportunities that have transformed what we recognise as leisure. This book also demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of studying digital leisure cultures. To make sense of how individuals and institutions use digital spaces it is necessary to draw on history, science and technology, philosophy, cultural studies, sociology and geography, as well as sport and leisure studies. This important and timely study discusses both the promise of the digital sphere as a realm of liberation, and the darker side of the internet associated with control, surveillance, exclusion and dehumanisation. Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare (Paperback): Jay Liebowitz, Amanda Dawson Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare (Paperback)
Jay Liebowitz, Amanda Dawson
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book shows healthcare professionals how to turn data points into meaningful knowledge upon which they can take effective action. Actionable intelligence can take many forms, from informing health policymakers on effective strategies for the population to providing direct and predictive insights on patients to healthcare providers so they can achieve positive outcomes. It can assist those performing clinical research where relevant statistical methods are applied to both identify the efficacy of treatments and improve clinical trial design. It also benefits healthcare data standards groups through which pertinent data governance policies are implemented to ensure quality data are obtained, measured, and evaluated for the benefit of all involved. Although the obvious constant thread among all of these important healthcare use cases of actionable intelligence is the data at hand, such data in and of itself merely represents one element of the full structure of healthcare data analytics. This book examines the structure for turning data into actionable knowledge and discusses: The importance of establishing research questions Data collection policies and data governance Principle-centered data analytics to transform data into information Understanding the "why" of classified causes and effects Narratives and visualizations to inform all interested parties Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare is an important examination of how proper healthcare-related questions should be formulated, how relevant data must be transformed to associated information, and how the processing of information relates to knowledge. It indicates to clinicians and researchers why this relative knowledge is meaningful and how best to apply such newfound understanding for the betterment of all.

Relationship Based Leadership (Paperback, New): Chad Richardson, Kathleen Earle Relationship Based Leadership (Paperback, New)
Chad Richardson, Kathleen Earle
R1,196 Discovery Miles 11 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Relationship Based Leadership has been written primarily for child-care leaders looking for a better way to manage their agencies-one that emphasizes cooperation rather that control; motivation from within rather that from without; and accountability to a team, more than to a boss. Such changes not only require fundamental shifts in how managers and workers think, but even greater changes in their relationships to one another. It carefully explains the basic changes needed to bring about relationship-based leadership, including principles of motivation, managing social situations, principles of team leadership, strategic planning, keys to being more effective in relationships, staff development strategies, and working through personality conflicts at all levels of an organization. The text illustrates these concepts with case studies (derived from on-site interviews with early childhood program directors) and anecdotal experiences in actual childcare settings. The book's applied focus utilizes learning exercises that allow the reader to apply the principles and skills presented in each chapter.

R1,549 Discovery Miles 15 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Cultural heritage and contemporary arts benefit from being showcased in events. It therefore contributes to a greater understanding of how arts events can create a beneficial experience for the individual and the community as well as their future sustainable development. The title explores a broad range of events from around the globe including: inspirational events for building creative (social, cultural and human) capital; affirming events for encouraging links to cultural identity or heritage; pleasurable events that offer enjoyable recreational, leisure and touristic experiences; enriching events that create opportunities for personal growth and/or to sell products or experiences, and finally, celebratory events that enhance cultural diversity. Fashion, Design and Events (Paperback): Kim Williams, Jennifer Laing, Warwick Frost Fashion, Design and Events (Paperback)
Kim Williams, Jennifer Laing, Warwick Frost
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The importance of fashion and design in an events context remains under-researched, despite their ubiquity and significance from a societal and economic perspective. Fashion-themed events, for example, appeal to broad audiences and may tour the globe. Staging these events might help to brand destinations, boost visitor numbers and trigger popular debates about the contributions that fashion and design can make to identity. They may also tell us something about our culture and wider society. This edited volume for the first time examines fashion and design events from a social perspective, including the meanings they bestow and their potential economic, cultural and personal impacts. It explores the reasons for their popularity and influence, and provides a critique of their growth in different markets. Events examined include fashion weeks, fashion or design themed exhibitions, historical re-enactments, extreme/alternative fashion and design events, and large-scale public events such as royal weddings and horse races. International examples and case studies are drawn from countries as diverse as the USA, UK, Germany, Bhutan, New Zealand and Australia. These are used to develop and critique various thematic concepts linked to fashion and design events, such as identity, gender, aspirations and self-image, commodification, authenticity, destination development and marketing, business strategy and protection/infringement of intellectual property. Fashion, Design and Events also provides a futurist view of these types of events and sets out a future research agenda. This book has a unique focus on events associated with fashion and design and features a swathe of disciplinary backgrounds. It will appeal to a broad academic audience, such as students of art and design, cultural studies, tourism, events studies, sociology and marketing.

Media, Culture, and the Meanings of Hockey - Constructing a Canadian Hockey World, 1896-1907 (Hardcover): Stacy L. Lorenz Media, Culture, and the Meanings of Hockey - Constructing a Canadian Hockey World, 1896-1907 (Hardcover)
Stacy L. Lorenz
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume examines the cultural meanings of high-level amateur and professional hockey in Canada during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, the author analyzes English Canadian media narratives of Stanley Cup "challenge" games and championship series between 1896 and 1907. Newspaper coverage and telegraph reconstructions of Stanley Cup challenges contributed significantly to the growth of a mediated Canadian "hockey world" - and a broader "world of sport" - during this time period. By 1903, Stanley Cup hockey games had become national Canadian events, followed by audiences across the country. Hockey also played an important role in the construction of gender and class identities, and in debates about amateurism, professionalism, and community representation in sport. The author also explores the connections between violence and masculinity in Canadian hockey by examining media descriptions of "brutal" and "strenuous" play. He analyzes how notions of civic identity changed as hockey clubs evolved from amateur teams represented by players who were members of their home community to professional aggregations that included paid imports from outside the town. As a result, this volume addresses important gaps in the study of sport history and the analysis of sport and popular culture. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.
