Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - Recent Advances and Innovations in Assessment, Education, and... Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - Recent Advances and Innovations in Assessment, Education, and Intervention (Hardcover)
James K. Luiselli
R2,268 Discovery Miles 22 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a relatively new diagnostic label which reflects the variability and differentiation of symptomatology among children and youth commonly described as having autistic disorder, high-functioning autism (HFA), and Asperger's syndrome. Current best practices have emerged from decades of evidence-based research, research-to-practice translation of empirically supported procedures, and consensus-driven recommendations from multiple disciplines. As a result, practitioners have many educational and intervention choices for children and youth with ASD-what is critical is that these options are informed by empirical outcomes that have been replicated in experimental trials (group and single-case) and disseminated to professionals and researchers alike. Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a state-of-the-art volume of 15 chapters across four thematic sections that reflect the current convention of viewing autism along a continuum of presenting symptoms. Skillfully edited by James K. Luiselli, sections cover diagnosis, assessment, and measurement; evidence-based practices; health and development; and additional topics such as mindful caregiving and support, CBT, and behavioral family intervention. Compiling the most up-to-date advances in approaches toward diagnosis, education, treatment, and program development, Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be a valuable resource for professionals and trainees in the ASD field including psychologists, educators, therapists, behavior analysts, and similar practitioners. It is also appropriate for academic researchers and courses devoted to clinical psychology, special education, developmental disabilities, and special topics.

Solving Health and Behavioral Problems from Birth through Preschool - A Parent's Guide (Hardcover): Roy Benaroch M.D. Solving Health and Behavioral Problems from Birth through Preschool - A Parent's Guide (Hardcover)
Roy Benaroch M.D.
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emory University Pediatrician Roy Benaroch wrote this guide to help parents understand the most common childhood maladies and misbehaviors and know what the best options are for action. Himself the father of three, Benaroch shares the insights of a medically-trained parent, telling us what he would do if his own child developed each malady. The topics addressed range from abdominal pain, ear infections and vomiting to issues with eating, sleeping and toilet training. Benaroch includes the most recent research in each area and shares vignettes from his own practice and his own household. All parents have faced the frustration of seeing their child sick and not knowing whether to rush to the doctor, offer over-the-counter remedies, or do little and wait to see if the problem passes. So too we have all faced those times when our children seem well but will not cooperate with behaviors involving eating, sleeping, or other activities. Emory University Pediatrician Roy Benaroch wrote this guide to help parents understand the most common childhood maladies and misbehaviors, and know what the best options are for action. Himself the father of three, Benaroch shares the insights of a medically-trained parent, telling us what he would do if his own child developed each malady. The topics addressed range from abdominal pain, ear infections and vomiting to issues with eating, sleeping and toilet training. Benaroch includes the most recent research in each area, and shares vignettes from his own practice, and his own household. Known widely simply as Dr. Roy, he is also the author of How to Get the Best Healthcare for Your Child (Praeger, 2007).

Pediatric Speech and Language: Perspectives on Interprofessional Practice, An Issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America,... Pediatric Speech and Language: Perspectives on Interprofessional Practice, An Issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America, Volume 65-1 (Hardcover)
Brian B. Shulman
R1,218 Discovery Miles 12 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like many other medical and health-related professions, the speech-language pathology and audiology professions have been responding to the changes in the ways in which healthcare is delivered. These changes are occurring at the federal and state levels due to changes in legislative and regulatory policies. To this end and as a result of reports from the World Health Organization (2010, 2011, 2013) and the Institute of Medicine (2000, 2001, 2015), healthcare professionals are now addressing healthcare service delivery within an interprofessional, collaborative practice and patient outcomes context. This volume of Pediatric Clinics will present articles that address clinical care to a variety of pediatric speech and language clinical populations. While it will be the intent of each piece to address interprofessional perspectives of care, the opening and closing pieces, respectively, will introduce and then synthesize, all of the articles into a cogent volume. Articles are devoted to the following topics: The Journey to Interprofessional Practice: Are We There Yet; Late Talkers: Why the 'Wait and See' Approach is Outdated; A Pediatrician's Guide to Cleft Palate Speech and Non-Cleft Causes of Velopharyngeal Insufficiency (VPi); Supporting Children with Autism and Their Families: A Model for Interprofessional Practice; Feeding Problems in Infants and Children: Assessment and Etiology; A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to the Differential Diagnosis of Children with Communication Disorders; Open Up and Let Us In: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Oral Health; Otitis Media: Beyond the Examining Room; Clinical Perspectives on Pre-Literacy Development in Young Children; Using the ICF Framework to Achieve Interprofessional Functional Outcomes for Young Children: A Speech-Language Pathology Perspective; Developmental Care of the Pre-Term Infant: From NICU Through High-Risk Infant Follow Up; Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: What That Means for Early Intervention Service Delivery; The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in Creating a Model for Interprofessional Practice in an Ambulatory Care Clinic; and Identification of Speech and Language Delays in Young Children: An Important Collaborative Role for the Pediatrician.

Family Support in Community Pediatrics - Confronting New Challenges (Hardcover, New): Francis Rushton Family Support in Community Pediatrics - Confronting New Challenges (Hardcover, New)
Francis Rushton
R2,803 R2,537 Discovery Miles 25 370 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written by a pediatrician for pediatric clinicians on the front line in response to the ever increasing obligations they acquire for the well being of children, this book focuses on the potential of health care to impact the social morbidities that affect children's health. Dr. Rushton does not suggest that child health practitioners must do more, but rather they must reorient their efforts in order to achieve optimal outcomes for children. As specialists in child health, pediatric clinicians have skills they can utilize to ensure better outcomes for children, but doing so will require a reorganization of health supervision and the establishment of links with other social services. Group visits, psychosocial screening, school health, public-private partnerships, home visitation, parent-child centers, and use of auxiliary anticipatory guidance specialists are all tools described in the development of a coordinated, community-based, family-centered approach to pediatric health care supervision. This is a book for private practitioners, community health professionals, academicians who support them, and all those others who want to ensure that our children are nurtured by the child health care system. The crux of this book is to provide a template for thoughtful consideration by the thousands of pediatric providers who care deeply about their profession.

Through Understanding Comes Respect and Love
This book was inspired by the author's daughter, Jaimie, who struggles with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) every day. It was written to validate Jaimie's feelings and to show her other children feel things the way she does. This book can help children with SPD learn how to explain their disorder to others; help peers understand what children with SPD go through; and also help therapists, teachers and/or counselors learn how to talk about it. Helping others learn about children with special needs brings understanding to them and help to make them seem less... different.
New 2nd edition includes suggested activities teachers or caregivers can do with children to help develop a deeper understanding of how SPD "feels" plus new pages on vestibular and proprioception systems.
Praise for "I'm Not Weird, I Have SPD":
"This book is a must-read for any parent who has a child suffering with Sensory Processing Disorder. It also helps your child put words to what they are feeling on a daily basis. Teachers and other professionals working with children who have SPD also come to a better understanding of how to help these children."
--Tanya Wilson
"A heart-touching book, written in a straightforward, kid-friendly manner that provides an excellent insight to the trials, frustrations, and new discoveries children with SPD and their families may encounter. This book has assisted in creating an appreciation and acceptance of the unique qualities within all of us, and that we are not 'weird'-we are 'wonderful' "
--Lillian Baulkham, Grade 3 teacher, Sweet Grass School, Edmonton, Alberta
"When I read Chynna Laird's I'm Not Weird, I Have SPD, I almost cried. Not because the story of a child struggling with severe sensory disorder is so sad, but because the frustration shared by child and family alike before diagnosis is so heart-wrenching. Ms. Laird leaves the reader with a moment of with a moment of joy and a real hope for a brighter tomorrow "

Susan G. Marshall, Drucy Borowitz
R1,225 Discovery Miles 12 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disease whose symptoms and signs involve the gastrointestinal tract (thus affecting nutritional status), endocrine system, reproductive system and the respiratory tract (nose, sinuses and lungs). Despite new treatments, the median survival for patients with CF is less than optimal, primarily due to complications of obstructive lung disease. Currently there are approximately 60,000-80,000 people worldwide with CF. The clinical manifestations of CF are caused by dysfunction of CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), a multifunctional cyclic-AMP regulated ion channel protein. Over time, there has been dramatic improvement in CF patient life expectancy, in large part related to earlier diagnosis (newborn screening), better understanding of molecular genetics and underlying pathophysiology, the integrated and highly specialized Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Accredited Care Centers, and development of a wide range of new treatments and therapies, some of which target the basic CFTR defect. This edition of Pediatric Clinics of North America will offer general pediatricians and family physicians, as well as subspecialists, an update of the extraordinary progress made in the understanding and treatment of Cystic Fibrosis.
