Emotional Labour in Health Care - The unmanaged heart of nursing (Paperback): Catherine Theodosius Emotional Labour in Health Care - The unmanaged heart of nursing (Paperback)
Catherine Theodosius
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Do nurses still care? In today's inflexible, fast-paced and more accountable workplace where biomedical and clinical models dominate health care practice, is there room for emotional labour? Based on original empirical research, this book delves into personal accounts of nurses' emotion expressions and experiences as they emerge from everyday nursing practice, and illustrates how their emotional labour is adapting in response to a constantly changing work environment. The book begins by re-examining Arlie Hochschild's sociological notion of emotional labour, and combines it with Margaret Archer's understanding of emotion and the inner dialogue. In an exploration of the nature of emotional labour, its historical and political context, and providing original, but easily recognisable, typology, Catherine Theodosius emphasises that it is emotion - complex, messy and opaque - that drives emotional labour within health care. She suggests that rather than being marginalised, emotional labour in nursing is frequently found in places that are hidden or unrecognised. By understanding emotion itself, which is fundamentally interactive and communicative, she argues that emotional labour is intrinsically linked to personal and social identity. The suggestion is made that the nursing profession has a responsibility to include emotional labour within personal and professional development strategies to ensure the care needs of the vulnerable are met. This innovative volume will be of interest to nursing, health care and sociology students, researchers and professionals.

2008 AJN Book of the Year Winner

Like its popular predecessor, the new edition of "Bathing Without a Battle" presents an individualized, problem-solving approach to bathing and personal care of individuals with dementia. On the basis of extensive original research and clinical experience, the editors have developed strategies and techniques that work in both institution and home settings. Their approach is also appropriate for caregiving activities other than bathing, such as morning and evening care, and for frail elders not suffering from dementia.

For this second edition, the authors have included historical material on bathing and substantially updated the section on special concerns, including:
Pain Skin care Determining the appropriate level of assistance Transfers The environment

An enhanced final section addresses ways to support caregivers by increasing their understanding of the care recipient's needs and their knowledge of interventions to improve care and comfort. It also emphasizes self-care and system-level changes to promote person-directed care. Several chapters include specific insights and wisdom from direct caregivers.

Principles and Methods of Transformative Action Research - A Half Century of Living and Doing Collaborative Inquiry... Principles and Methods of Transformative Action Research - A Half Century of Living and Doing Collaborative Inquiry (Hardcover)
John A. Bilorusky
R4,498 Discovery Miles 44 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Principles and Methods of Transformative Action Research delves into both general principles and specific methods for basic steps in the action research process-asking questions, gathering and analyzing data, communicating findings, and pursuing action. The role of collaboration is emphasized, with strategies of value to experts and engaged citizens in doing participatory research and community-based knowledge-building. Detailed attention is given to specific strategies of interviewing, participant observation, and judging and weighing evidence. The book draws on creative and critically minded elements of scientific traditions, such as transparency in telling the "story" of one's inquiry, identifying data that are "exceptions to the rule," and the value of non-formulaic, improvisational designs. Quite distinctively, the book addresses how to write in one's own voice, how to integrate action-and-inquiry into one's everyday life, issues of ethics and social responsibility, and how to consider both immediate, practical needs and "bigger picture," systemic challenges. This book can serve as an undergraduate or graduate social sciences text on research methods. It is also a guidebook for action-oriented research by academics, professionals, and lay people, alike in community agencies, schools, and grassroots organizations, and for socially relevant academic research concerned with social justice, multiculturalism, and inclusiveness.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: A Practical Guide to Helping People Take Control (Paperback, New edition): Danny C. K. Lam Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: A Practical Guide to Helping People Take Control (Paperback, New edition)
Danny C. K. Lam
R1,159 Discovery Miles 11 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: A Practical Guide to Helping People Take Control explores the premise that negative beliefs play an important role in the development and continuation of mental health problems. The book offers a new integrative model of causality for instigating change, based on giving clients control and choice over these beliefs, and therefore over their mood and behaviour. This practical guide also focuses on the stigmas often attached to people with 'mental illness'. Danny C. K. Lam suggests that by providing both the client and the general public with a more accurate understanding of the nature and causes of mental health problems it is possible to de-stigmatise the 'mental illness' label. This will help the client improve self-esteem and the ability to manage personal and interpersonal difficulties and take control of their problems and responsibility for recovery. Divided into six parts, this book covers: stigma, prejudice and discrimination from societal perspectives the nature and cause of emotional upsets a therapeutic framework for change self-prejudice, personal and interpersonal issues good and bad methods of communication practical approaches to assessing problems methods of taking control. This cognitive behavioural approach to mental health problems is an innovative contribution to the field. Illustrated throughout with clinical examples and practical advice, the book is essential reading for all of those involved in mental health, from nurses to counsellors, and from medical practitioners and social workers to ministers of religion.

"This well written and well edited book fills a unique gap.... one of the] precious few books] that focus on science or medicine and one of] even fewer that cover the history of nursing."(Three Stars)--"Doody's Book Review Service"

While there have been many research texts in the nursing literature, and nursing history is both taught in courses and of popular interest to practicing nurses, there has "never" been a hands-on text that describes the process of doing historical research in nursing. This book, contributed by well-known and respected nurse historians, provides the necessary direction, guidance, and examples needed to conduct historical research. It covers such topics as historiography, biographical research, using artifacts in historical research, doing archival and other data searches, doing international historical research, and locating funding sources for historical research. Case studies will be used throughout to illustrate various methods and describe how, why, when, and where historical research is used in nursing.

Features of this edition:
Provides direction and tools for conducting historical research Describes types of research, including biographical and oral histories Covers frameworks used to study historical events, such as social, political, feminist, intellectual, and cultural Addresses contemporary issues such as preserving and storing digitalized and tape-recorded data and obtaining institutional review board (IRB) approval for research, and addressing ethical and legal issues in historical research Includes case studies that provide a "how-to" guide to conducting research

Clinical Challenges - Focus on Nursing (Hardcover): Debbie Picone, Judy Lumby Clinical Challenges - Focus on Nursing (Hardcover)
Debbie Picone, Judy Lumby
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nurses work across the health care system in a great variety of roles. From patient care to administration, nurses see where the pressures are, and how well we are managing to look after some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Clinical Challenges explores contemporary issues central to nurses' work. Part I explores clinical concerns such as pain and wound management, the role of the nurse practitioner, and the effects of extending life. For many years the health sector has been coping with cutbacks in government funding, and Part II examines how this impacts on the way we handle social illnesses such as suicide and drug dependence, as well as the needs of our growing ageing population. Part III looks at management issues affecting nurses including the growing use of business strategies and rhetoric in the health care system, and the introduction of information systems and of more flexible ways of working. Written by nurses working in a variety of professional roles in the system and critiqued by experts in the field, Clinical Challenges offers valuable insights for nurses at every level, including students.

The Ethics of Care and Empathy (Hardcover): Michael Slote The Ethics of Care and Empathy (Hardcover)
Michael Slote
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eminent moral philosopher Michael Slote argues that care ethics presents an important challenge to other ethical traditions and that a philosophically developed care ethics should, and can, offer its own comprehensive view of the whole of morality. Taking inspiration from British moral sentimentalism and drawing on recent psychological literature on empathy, he shows that the use of that notion allows care ethics to develop its own sentimentalist account of respect, autonomy, social justice, and deontology. Furthermore, he argues that care ethics gives a more persuasive account of these topics than theories offered by contemporary Kantian liberalism. Michael Slote's use of the notion of empathy also allows him to provide care ethics with its first full-scale account of moral education, and he shows that the often-voiced suspicion that care ethics supports the status quo and is counterproductive to feminist goals is actually the very opposite of the truth. A care ethics that takes empathy seriously can say what is wrong with patriarchal ideas and institutions in a highly persuasive and forward-looking way.The most philosophically rich and challenging exploration of the theory and practice of care to date, The Ethics of Care and Empathy also shows the manifold connections that can be drawn between philosophical issues and leading ideas in the fields of psychology, education, and women's studies.

Support workers are key deliverers of care in the UK, often hugely valued by those people they provide care for. Their roles and responsibilities are increasing in the midst of ever-changing health and social care systems. A Handbook for Support Workers in Health and Social Care recognises the contribution of support workers and provides an introduction to the core knowledge, legislation and models of practice required to work across health and social care settings. Communication, both written and in person, is a central theme, and key values such as compassion and dignity are explored in relation to this. There is a thought-provoking discussion of working with people, covering topics including respecting choices, thinking about risk and safeguarding. The book ends by looking at what it means to be a competent practitioner and the importance of continual professional development. The first textbook introducing the core theory and practice knowledge necessary to work as a support worker in health and social care, it includes case studies, tasks and exercises to help the reader apply their learning. The authors share more than 20 years of experience in the design and delivery of support worker courses in higher education.
