This title was first published in 2001. An important book presenting the results of the European Union funded EURICON project in biomedical ethics. Involving experts in eleven countries, this project was motivated by European neonatal clinicians' concerns about the problem of obtaining informed consent in neonatal research. It addressed the difficulties of obtaining consent from subjects involved in such research, and investigated the relevance and appropriateness of obtaining consent from parents. The project also examined the work of Research Ethics Committees in Europe. It explored their responses to EURICON's analysis of the views of clinicians and parents, and their attitudes towards the relevant laws and legal requirements. The wide geographical scope of the project enabled international comparisons of the opinions of clinicians and parents, the legal frameworks governing neonatal research, and the effectiveness of Research Ethics Committees. This is the first such investigation on a European scale, and it offers a unique interdisciplinary approach to these issues. Incorporating clinical, ethical, legal and sociological perspectives, the results and recommendations presented in this book will be of widespread significance to practitioners, researchers and policy makers throughout Europe and beyond.

This title was first published in 2002: This book is an analysis of the ways in which mental states ground attributions of responsibility to persons. Particular features of the book include: attention to the agent's epistemic capacity for beliefs about the foreseeable consequences of actions and omissions; attention to the essential role of emotions in prudential and moral reasoning; a conception of personal identity that can justify holding persons responsible at later times for actions performed at earlier times; an emphasis on neurobiology as the science that should inform our thinking about free will and responsibility; and the melding of literature on free will and responsibility in contemporary analytic philosophy with legal cases, abnormal psychology, neurology and psychiatry, which offers a richer texture to the general debate on the relevant issues.
There are 60 million health care workers globally and most of this workforce consists of nurses, as they are key providers of primary health care. Historically, the global nurse occupation has been predominately female and segregated along gendered, racialised and classed hierarchies. In the last decade, new actors have emerged in the management of health care human resources, specifically from the corporate sector, which has created new interactions, networks, and organisational practices. This book urgently calls for the reconceptualisation in the theoretical framing of the globalised nurse occupation from International Human Resource Management (IHRM) to Transnational Human Resource Management (THRM). Specifically, the book draws on critical human resource management literature and transnational feminist theories to frame the strategies and practices used to manage nurses across geographical sites of knowledge production and power, which centralise on how and by whom nurses are managed. In its current managerial form, the author argues that the nurses are constructed and produced as resources to be packaged for clients in public and private organisations.
