Factor Analysis in Chemistry 3e (Hardcover, 3rd ed): ER Malinowski Factor Analysis in Chemistry 3e (Hardcover, 3rd ed)
ER Malinowski
R5,407 Discovery Miles 54 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fundamentals of the discipline, now complete with the latest experimental research and techniques

Factor analysis is a mathematical tool for examining a wide range of data sets, with applications especially important to the design of experiments (DOE), spectroscopy, chromatography, and chemometrics. Whereas the first two editions concentrated on standardizing the fundamentals of this emerging discipline, the Third Edition of Factor Analysis in Chemistry, the "bible" of factor analysis, proves a comprehensive handbook at a level that is consistent with the research and design of experiments today.

With the exception of updates, the introductory chapters remain unchanged. Chapter 6 has been edited to focus on evolutionary methods, including window factor analysis, transmutation, and DECRA. Selections on partial least squares and multimode analysis have been expanded and consolidated into two new chapters, 7 and 8. Some of the latest advances in a wide variety of fields, such as chromatography, NMR, biomedicine, environmental science, food, and fuels, are described in the applications chapters (chapters 9 through 12).

Other features of the text include:

  • Provides history of the discipline as well as theory, philosophy, and applications
  • Written for all readership levels: introductory, intermediate, and advanced
  • Explains complicated concepts in simple language without sacrificing mathematical rigor
  • Presents concepts and programs in a style that allows the user to develop programs in any computer language
  • Demonstrates the utility of various factor analytical techniques for solving practical problems in chemistry and related sciences
  • Showcases a unique presentation of partial least squares

Factor Analysis in Chemistry, Third Edition remains the premier reference in its field.

This thesis describes novel substrate embedded physical sensors that can be used to monitor different types of cell-based assays non-invasively and label-free. The sensors described provide integrative information of the cells under study with an adaptable time resolution (ranging from milliseconds to days). This information about the dynamic cell response to chemical, physical or biological stimuli defines a new paradigm in fundamental biomedical research. The author, Maximilian Oberleitner, describes approaches in which the cells are directly grown on different sensor surfaces (gold-film electrodes, shear wave resonators or dye-doped polymer films). This approach, with the reacting cells in particularly close proximity and contact with the sensor surface, is key to a remarkable sensitivity, opening the way for a variety of new applications. This thesis not only introduces the fundamentals of each approach, but it also describes in great detail the design principles and elucidates the boundary conditions of the new sensors.

R2,894 Discovery Miles 28 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The thesis provides the necessary experimental and analytical tools to unambiguously observe the atomically resolved chemical reactions. A great challenge of modern science has been to directly observe atomic motions during structural transitions, and while this was first achieved through a major advance in electron source brightness, the information content was still limited and new methods for image reconstruction using femtosecond electron diffraction methods were needed. One particular challenge lay in reconciling the innumerable possible nuclear configurations with the observation of chemical reaction mechanisms that reproducibly give the same kind of chemistry for large classes of molecules. The author shows that there is a simple solution that occurs during barrier crossing in which the highly anharmonic potential at that point in nuclear rearrangements couples high- and low-frequency vibrational modes to give highly localized nuclear motions, reducing hundreds of potential degrees of freedom to just a few key modes. Specific examples are given in this thesis, including two photoinduced phase transitions in an organic system, a ring closure reaction, and two direct observations of nuclear reorganization driven by spin transitions. The emerging field of structural dynamics promises to change the way we think about the physics of chemistry and this thesis provides tools to make it happen.

21st Century Challenges in Chemical Crystallography II - Structural Correlations and Data Interpretation (Hardcover, 1st ed.... 21st Century Challenges in Chemical Crystallography II - Structural Correlations and Data Interpretation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
D.Michael P. Mingos, Paul R. Raithby
R8,297 Discovery Miles 82 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume summarises recent developments and highlights new techniques which will define possible future directions for small molecule X-ray crystallography. It provides an insight into how specific aspects of crystallography are developing and shows how they may interact or integrate with other areas of science. The development of more sophisticated equipment and the massive rise in computing power has made it possible to solve the three-dimensional structure of an organic molecule within hours if not minutes. This successful trajectory has resulted in the ability to study ever more complex molecules and use smaller and smaller crystals. The structural parameters for over a million organic and organometallic compounds are now archived in the most commonly used database and this wealth of information creates a new set of problems for future generations of scientists. The volume provides some insight into how users of crystallographic structural data banks can navigate their way through a world where "big data" has become the norm. The coupling of crystallography to quantum chemical calculations provides detailed information about electron distributions in crystals affording a much more detailed analysis of bonding than has been possible previously. In quantum crystallography, quantum mechanical wavefunctions are used to extract information about bonding and properties from the measured X-ray structure factors. The advent of quantum crystallography has resulted in form and structure factors derived from quantum mechanics which have been used in advanced refinement and wavefunction fitting. This volume describes how quantum mechanically derived atomic form factors and structure factors are constructed to allow the improved description of the diffraction experiment. It further discusses recent developments in this field and illustrates their applications with a wide range of examples. This volume will be of interest to chemists and crystallographers with an interest in the synthesis, characterisation and physical and catalytic properties of solid-state materials. It will also be relevant for the community of computational chemists who study chemical systems. Postgraduate students entering the field will benefit from a historical introduction to the way in which scientists have used the data derived from crystallography to develop new structural and bonding models.

Laboratory Experiments in Analytical Chemistry (Hardcover): Maurice O. Iwunze Laboratory Experiments in Analytical Chemistry (Hardcover)
Maurice O. Iwunze
R833 Discovery Miles 8 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the recent past quantitative chemical analysis textbook writers included selected experiments to complete and complement the text and thus give instructors a choice to select the experiments to be performed by students in quantitative analysis course. On the other hand, this is not so for courses in instrumental analysis which is a sequential course to quantitative analysis. This is, perhaps, due to the numerous instrumental techniques that have been developed over the years for chemical analysis. In its stead, textbooks on experiments in instrumental analysis are common, and these are as diversified as the topics covered in lecture courses. Most of the experimental topics covered, especially, in quantitative analysis, lean heavily on determination of materials or compounds of inorganic chemistry origin. This seems to be the tradition with only a few exceptions. However, recently, textbooks on quantitative analysis have emerged and continue to emerge, without any experimental section. This is not quite surprising though, since many instructors nowadays, tend to design their own experiments to suit and complement their lecture materials. On the other hand, the trend in the production of books on instrumental analysis experiments has remained the same. The objective of this book is therefore two fold. One is to design a reasonably comprehensive laboratory text that embodies both areas of analytical chemistry. The other is to shy away from the tradition of making quantitative analysis experiments lean too heavily on inorganic materials. To this end, several topics ranging from inorganic to organic materials are included in this laboratory text book. A new element is also introduced inthis book. That is, students are exposed throughout the book to the analysis of compounds of pharmaceutical relevance.

Dieter Britz, Joerg Strutwolf
R7,631 Discovery Miles 76 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explains how the partial differential equations (pdes) in electroanalytical chemistry can be solved numerically. It guides the reader through the topic in a very didactic way, by first introducing and discussing the basic equations along with some model systems as test cases systematically. Then it outlines basic numerical approximations for derivatives and techniques for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Finally, more complicated methods for approaching the pdes are derived. The authors describe major implicit methods in detail and show how to handle homogeneous chemical reactions, even including coupled and nonlinear cases. On this basis, more advanced techniques are briefly sketched and some of the commercially available programs are discussed. In this way the reader is systematically guided and can learn the tools for approaching his own electrochemical simulation problems. This new fourth edition has been carefully revised, updated and extended compared to the previous edition (Lecture Notes in Physics Vol. 666). It contains new material describing migration effects, as well as arrays of ultramicroelectrodes. It is thus the most comprehensive and didactic introduction to the topic of electrochemical simulation.

Andrea Scozzari, Elissavet Dotsika
R5,645 Discovery Miles 56 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on scientific and technological aspects of groundwater-resources assessment and surveillance. It describes relevant risks and investigates selected techniques for the monitoring and mitigation of the individuated threats to groundwater quality. The authors discuss the concepts of groundwater-resources protection and offer examples of both geogenic and anthropogenic degradation of groundwater quality, such as heavy metals from mining activities and natural water-rock interactions, as well as risk of contamination due to geological CO2 storage practices etc. The volume also covers non-invasive monitoring techniques and briefly addresses innovative sensor technologies for the online assessment of water quality. Furthermore, the role played by geochemical techniques, the potential of environmental isotopes and the support provided by physical modelling are highlighted. The chapters guide the reader through various viewpoints, according to the diverse disciplines involved, without aiming to be exhaustive, but instead picking representative topics for their relevance in the context of groundwater protection and control. This book will be of interest to advanced students, researchers, policy-makers and stakeholders at various levels.
