Vibration of Structures and Machines - Practical Aspects (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 1999): Giancarlo Genta Vibration of Structures and Machines - Practical Aspects (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 1999)
Giancarlo Genta
R2,994 Discovery Miles 29 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Addressing important practical aspects of nonlinear vibration analysis, this book presents cases rarely discussed in the existing literature yet are of considerable interest to researchers and practical engineers, such as rotor dynamics and torsional vibration of engines. The book can be used not only as a reference, but also as a graduate-level text, as it develops the subject from its foundations and contains problems and solutions for each chapter. The book begins with a discussion of vibrations in linear systems with one degree of freedom, providing a mathematical and physical basis for the subsequent chapters. Linear systems with many degrees of freedom serve to introduce the modal analysis of vibrations as well as some useful computational procedures. The book then turns to continuous linear systems, discussing both analytical solutions that provide physical insights as well as discretization techniques that supply tools for actual computation. The discussion of nonlinear vibrations includes a treatment of chaotic vibrations and other new insights. The book concludes with detailed discussions of the dynamics of rotating and reciprocating machinery.

Linear Discrete-Time Systems (Paperback): Zoran M. Buchevats, Lyubomir T. Gruyitch Linear Discrete-Time Systems (Paperback)
Zoran M. Buchevats, Lyubomir T. Gruyitch
R2,006 Discovery Miles 20 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers crucial lacunae of the linear discrete-time time-invariant dynamical systems and introduces the reader to their treatment, while functioning under real, natural conditions, in forced regimes with arbitrary initial conditions. It provides novel theoretical tools necessary for the analysis and design of the systems operating in stated conditions. The text completely covers two well-known systems, IO and ISO, along with a new system, IIO. It discovers the concept of the full transfer function matrix F(z) in the z-complex domain, which incorporates the Z-transform of the system, input and another variable, vectors, all with arbitrary initial conditions. Consequently, it addresses the full system matrix P(z) and the full block diagram technique based on the use of F(z), which incorporates the Z-transform of the system, input and another variable, vectors, all with arbitrary initial conditions. The book explores the direct relationship between the system full transfer function matrix F(z) and the Lyapunov stability concept, definitions, and conditions, as well as with the BI stability concept, definitions, and conditions. The goal of the book is to unify the study and applications of all three classes of the linear discrete-time time-invariant system, for short systems.

Topology Optimization of Structures and Composite Continua (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): George I.N. Rozvany, N. Olhoff Topology Optimization of Structures and Composite Continua (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
George I.N. Rozvany, N. Olhoff
R4,231 Discovery Miles 42 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Topology optimization of structures and composite materials is a new and rapidly expanding field of mechanics which now plays an ever-increasing role in most branches of technology, such as aerospace, mechanical, structural, civil and ma terials engineering, with important implications for energy production as well as building and environmental sciences. It is a truly "high-tech" field which requires advanced computer facilities and computational methods, whilst involving unusual theoretical considerations in pure mathematics. Topology optimization deals with some of the most difficult problems of mechanical sciences, but it is also of consid erable practical interest because it can achieve much greater savings than conven tional (sizing or shape) optimization. Extensive research into topology optimization is being carried out in most of the developed countries of the world. The workshop addressed the state of the art of the field, bringing together re searchers from a diversity of backgrounds (mathematicians, information scientists, aerospace, automotive, mechanical, structural and civil engineers) to span the full breadth and depth of the field and to outline future developments in research and avenues of cooperation between NATO and Partner countries. The program cov ered * theoretical (mathematical) developments, * computer algorithms, software development and computational difficulties, and * practical applications in various fields of technology. A novel feature of the workshop was that, in addition to shorter discussions after each lecture, a 30 minutes panel discussion took place in each sesssion, which made this ARW highly interactive and more informal.

Time scales involved in the explosion process and the scaling procedure are ascertained. Explosions over the ground, in water, and the interaction of explosions with objects are examined. In order to keep the text easily readable, the detailed derivation of the mathematical equations is given in the seven appendices at the end of the book. Case studies of various explosions are investigated and simple problems and their solutions are provided for the different topics to assist the reader in internalizing the explosion process. The book is a useful reference for professionals and academics in aeronautics, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering and for personnel working in explosive manufacture and high-energy materials, armaments, space, defense, and industrial and fire safety.
