Beyond the Code - A Philosophical Guide to Engineering Ethics (Paperback): Heidi Furey, Scott Hill, Sujata K. Bhatia Beyond the Code - A Philosophical Guide to Engineering Ethics (Paperback)
Heidi Furey, Scott Hill, Sujata K. Bhatia
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For over 80 years, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has been a leader in the promotion of ethical practice within the field of engineering. One of the Society's greatest contributions is the formation and adoption of the NSPE Code of Ethics. But the code, with its six "Fundamental Canons," is only truly instructive if engineers can bridge the gap between principles and action. Here there is no substitute for personal reflection on the ethical and philosophical issues that underlie the code. If done well, such reflection provides an indispensable basis for moral problem solving. Beyond the Code: A Philosophical Guide to Engineering Ethics is designed to complement the NSPE Code of Ethics by helping readers "go beyond" in their understanding of the philosophical issues bound up in the code. Each chapter addresses one of the Fundamental Canons of the NSPE code, and provides a philosophical analysis of the various parts of each canon by employing contemporary and classical texts. This unique approach to engineering ethics guides students and professionals in their readings of the appended selections to refine their understanding of the code in order to apply it to the practical challenges of today's engineers. Key Features: Is the first introduction to engineering ethics that helps students understand and apply the NSPE Code of Ethics to engineering practice Includes a Preface from Arthur E. Schwartz, NSPE Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel, and NAFE Executive Director As a hybrid text, includes primary philosophical texts with extensive introductions and guided reading questions from the book's three authors Offers case studies from the NSPE Board of Ethical Review, allowing students to see a direct connection between the issues discussed in the text and real-world engineering practice Includes the following pedagogical aids: "Key Terms and Concepts" for each chapter "Preparing to Read" sections before each primary source reading "Guided Reading Questions" after each primary source reading "Going Beyond-Our Questions for a Deep Dive" after each case study.

Adaptive Learning Methods for Nonlinear System Modeling (Paperback): Danilo Comminiello, Jose C. Principe Adaptive Learning Methods for Nonlinear System Modeling (Paperback)
Danilo Comminiello, Jose C. Principe
R3,378 R3,208 Discovery Miles 32 080 Save R170 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Adaptive Learning Methods for Nonlinear System Modeling presents some of the recent advances on adaptive algorithms and machine learning methods designed for nonlinear system modeling and identification. Real-life problems always entail a certain degree of nonlinearity, which makes linear models a non-optimal choice. This book mainly focuses on those methodologies for nonlinear modeling that involve any adaptive learning approaches to process data coming from an unknown nonlinear system. By learning from available data, such methods aim at estimating the nonlinearity introduced by the unknown system. In particular, the methods presented in this book are based on online learning approaches, which process the data example-by-example and allow to model even complex nonlinearities, e.g., showing time-varying and dynamic behaviors. Possible fields of applications of such algorithms includes distributed sensor networks, wireless communications, channel identification, predictive maintenance, wind prediction, network security, vehicular networks, active noise control, information forensics and security, tracking control in mobile robots, power systems, and nonlinear modeling in big data, among many others. This book serves as a crucial resource for researchers, PhD and post-graduate students working in the areas of machine learning, signal processing, adaptive filtering, nonlinear control, system identification, cooperative systems, computational intelligence. This book may be also of interest to the industry market and practitioners working with a wide variety of nonlinear systems.

G.I. Schueller, Masanobu Shinozuka
R4,130 Discovery Miles 41 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is based on a number of lectures presented at CISM* -Course on "Stochastic Methods in Structural Mechanics," August 28 -30,1985 in Udine, Italy. The chapters presented here are either expanded and/or updated versions of these lectures. The purpose is to introduce readers to basic principles of stochastic methods of structural mechanics, particularly to those of dynamics. For those readers who wish to pursue the study further, the references provided in each chapter will serve as a useful source of information. Nevertheless the readers find some of the advanced topics presented by the authors immediately useful for their own application. The first section of Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the basic principles of probability theory followed by the discussion of methods to calculate time invariant structural reliability estimates, where the exact methods are particularly emphasized. The Chapter continues with a first introduction to the theory of stochastic processes. The properties of Gaussian and other type of processes are discussed. In dealing with observed data, tests of stationarity, as well as methods to estimate power spectra are described in some detail. The Chapter closes with a first treatice of excursions of stochastic processes in terms of number and duration of excursions, extremes, envelopes and time to first excursions. In Chapter 2 linear structures under stochastic loading are analyzed by applying the concepts as outlined in Chapter 1. The analyses are carried out in the time and frequency range respectively.

The Healthy Indoor Environment - How to assess occupants' wellbeing in buildings (Paperback): Philomena M. Bluyssen The Healthy Indoor Environment - How to assess occupants' wellbeing in buildings (Paperback)
Philomena M. Bluyssen
R1,587 Discovery Miles 15 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite policy directives, standards and guidelines, indoor environmental quality is still poor in many cases. The Healthy Indoor Environment, winner of the 2016 IDEC Book Award, aims to help architects, building engineers and anyone concerned with the wellbeing of building occupants to better understand the effects of spending time in buildings on health and comfort. In three clear parts dedicated to mechanisms, assessment and analysis, the book looks at different indoor stressors and their effects on wellbeing in a variety of scenarios with a range of tools and methods. The book supports a more holistic way of evaluating indoor environments and argues that a clear understanding of how the human body and mind receive, perceive and respond to indoor conditions is needed. At the national, European and worldwide level, it is acknowledged that a healthy and comfortable indoor environment is important both for the quality of life, now and in the future, and for the creation of truly sustainable buildings. Moreover, current methods of risk assessment are no longer adequate: a different view on indoor environment is required. Highly illustrated and full of practical examples, the book makes recommendations for future procedures for investigating indoor environmental quality based on an interdisciplinary understanding of the mechanisms of responses to stressors. It forms the basis for the development of an integrated approach towards assessment of indoor environmental quality.

Brian Fabien
R4,052 Discovery Miles 40 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Analytical System Dynamics: Modeling and Simulation" combines results from analytical mechanics and system dynamics to develop an approach to modeling constrained multidiscipline dynamic systems. This combination yields a modeling technique based on the energy method of Lagrange, which in turn, results in a set of differential-algebraic equations that are suitable for numerical integration. Using the modeling approach presented in this book enables one to model and simulate systems as diverse as a six-link, closed-loop mechanism or a transistor power amplifier.
