Building on the previous volume "Vibrations of Rotating Machinery - Volume 1. Basic Rotordynamics: Introduction to Practical Vibration Analysis," this book is intended for all practical designers and maintenance experts who are responsible for the reliable manufacturing and operation of rotating machinery. It opens with the dynamics of oil film bearings and their influences on unbalance, vibration resonance and the stability of rotor whirl motion. Subsequently, the book introduces readers to vibration diagnosis techniques for traditional ball bearings and active vibration control from magnetic bearings. Case studies on vibration problems and troubleshooting in industrial turbo machines are then presented and explained, showing rotor designers how to eliminate instability and modify resonance characteristics. Torsional vibration and other coupled vibration phenomena are discussed, and vibration measurement techniques and related signal processing procedures for vibration diagnosis are provided. Our latest three topics are included, covering: (a) the importance of the modeling order reduction (MOR) technique; (b) the approximate evaluation for oil-wheel/whip instability; and (c) a systematic method for shafting-blading coupled vibration analyses. In closing, a 100-question trial test is supplied as an example of the certification of vibration experts based on the ISO standard.
The term active fluids refers to motions that are created by transforming energy from the surroundings into directed motion. There are many examples, both natural and synthetic, including individual swimming bacteria or motile cells, drops and bubbles that move owing to surface stresses (so-called Marangoni motions), and chemical- or optical-driven colloids. Investigations into active fluids provide new insights into non-equilibrium systems, have the potential for novel applications, and open new directions in physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. This book provides an expert introduction to active fluids systems, covering simple to complex environments. It explains the interplay of chemical processes and hydrodynamics, including the roles of mechanical and rheological properties across active fluids, with reference to experiments, theory, and simulations. These concepts are discussed for a variety of scenarios, such as the trajectories of microswimmers, cell crawling and fluid stirring, and apply to collective behaviours of dense suspensions and active gels. Emerging avenues of research are highlighted, ranging from the role of active processes for biological functions to programmable active materials, showcasing the exciting potential of this rapidly-evolving research field.

There is still room for research in computational contact mechanics, hence engineering analysis includes unilateral constraints when a detailed modelling of a problem is needed. Contact modelling within real structures includes e.g. rolling wheels, metal forming processes and car crash analysis, and is outcome of the increasing power of modern computers. Also, multi-physics modelling of thermo-mechanical or electro-mechanical contact and microscopic modelling are used in order to get a deeper insight into the mechanism of friction and wear. Moreover, new numerical simulation techniques were developed within the finite element or boundary element method yielding better discretization tools and more efficient algorithms for contact. However, up to now there exists no approach which solves all problems of the above mentioned areas in a robust and reliable way, hence investigations and developments are still needed. The aim of the symposium was to bring scientists together who work on the frontier of research in computational contact mechanics described above, or in closely related subjects. During the symposium 37 scientists presented their newest findings in the area of discretization techniques for contact, algorithms and interesting numerical simulations of contact problems. The symposium gave detailed insight in the newest development in the area of simulation techniques for contact problems. Topics treated included new mathematical techniques like multi-level approaches, new discretization techniques like the mortar-method, advanced applications of unilateral contact to masonry structures, decohesion analysis and tractive rolling of tires. The current volume provides a goodoverview of modern techniques and state-of-the-art discretizations schemes applied in contact mechanics, and will stimulate future collaboration in science related to computational contact mechanics and in the organization of minisymposia and workshops in the area contact mechanics.

The transport sector continues to shift towards alternative powertrains, particularly with the UK Government’s announcement to end the sale of petrol and diesel passenger cars by 2030 and increasing support for alternatives. Despite this announcement, the internal combustion continues to play a significant role both in the passenger car market through the use of hybrids and sustainable low carbon fuels, as well as a key role in other sectors such as heavy-duty vehicles and off-highway applications across the globe. Building on the industry-leading IC Engines conference, the 2021 Powertrain Systems for Net-Zero Transport conference (7-8 December 2021, London, UK) focussed on the internal combustion engine’s role in Net-Zero transport as well as covered developments in the wide range of propulsion systems available (electric, fuel cell, sustainable fuels etc) and their associated powertrains. To achieve the net-zero transport across the globe, the life-cycle analysis of future powertrain and energy was also discussed. Hydrogels are highly hydrated three dimensional networks with the ability to mimic the extracellular matrix of bodily tissues and have thus found application in a wide range of biomedical applications. Unique physiochemical properties such as biocompatibility, water permeability, stimuli responsiveness and self-healing characteristics make them especially useful for use as scaffolds and matrices drug delivery, tissue engineering/regeneration and sensing. Their weak and brittle nature, however, often limits their widespread application where improved mechanical strength is required. To resolve this problem, there has been a significant amount of research into the improvement of their mechanical properties. Among these efforts, versatile multicomponent hydrogels have received much attention as their physiochemical properties can be structurally engineered to provide a wide range of desired properties. These multicomponent formulations also allow for the combination of natural and synthetic polymers, which offers the scope to exploit the advantages of each component, with the synergistic effects resulting from mutual interactions. This is a comprehensive biography of Ludwig Prandtl (1875-1953), the father of modern aerodynamics. His name is associated most famously with the boundary layer concept, but also with several other topics in 20th century fluid mechanics, particularly turbulence (Prandtl's mixing length). Among his disciples are pioneers of modern fluid mechanics such as Heinrich Blasius, Theodore von Karman and Walter Tollmien. Furthermore, Prandtl founded the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA) and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut fur Stroemungsforschung in Goettingen, both of them seeds for the growth of fluid mechanics in Germany. Yet Prandtl was also a representative of aeronautical research - from Imperial Germany via the Weimar Republic to the "Third Reich". Although not a party member, he assumed the role of a goodwill ambassador for Nazi Germany. This objective treatment of his career will be of interest to all scientists and historians wanting to learn more about Prandtl's influence and the early development of fluid- and aerodynamics.
