Rebekka Lang Fuentes
R2,260 Discovery Miles 22 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Olympic Education is tasked by both Olympism (Olympic Movement's underlying philosophy) and the United Nations to educate on human rights. This study explores how present this call is in contemporary European Olympic Education. National Olympic Education programmes from twelve countries are examined and compared: Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Israel, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, and Spain. Responses by individuals with NOAs' leadership positions to a semi-standardized research questionnaire as well as written information by NOAs on implemented national Olympic Education programmes, collected during February-May 2021, are subjected to a content analysis. Results indicate that human rights are explicitly and implicitly included as an educational theme in contemporary Olympic Education programmes. Parallels between human rights education and Olympic Education can be drawn.

Tactile Sensing, Information, and Feedback via Wave Propagation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yitian Shao Tactile Sensing, Information, and Feedback via Wave Propagation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yitian Shao
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A longstanding goal of haptic engineering is to develop haptic interfaces that can provide realistic sensations of touch. A fundamental step towards this goal is to understand what mechanical tactile signals the hand feels during daily touch interactions. This book reveals the complex patterns of mechanical waves propagating throughout the hand that can be elicited even by simple touch interactions, which helps in expanding existing knowledge of tactile function beyond the region of near skin-object contact and inspires new designs for haptic sensing and feedback technologies. The first part of this book describes new methods for capturing dynamic, spatially distributed tactile signals in the whole hand during natural hand interactions. The second part characterizes these signals and evaluates how well and how efficiently they encode the information of touch, relating to the transmission of mechanical waves in hand tissues. The final part demonstrates how these findings can be utilized to create novel haptic effects and tactile displays. Tactile Sensing, Information, and Feedback via Wave Propagation provides a unique view of tactile sensing and feedback and will appeal to researchers, engineers, and students who are interested in learning cutting-edge haptic science and technology.

Modeling the Electrochemo-poromechanics of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites and Cell Clusters (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022):... Modeling the Electrochemo-poromechanics of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites and Cell Clusters (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Alessandro Leronni
R5,264 Discovery Miles 52 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a novel continuum finite deformation framework addressing the complex interactions among electrostatics, species transport, and mechanics in solid networks immersed in a fluid phase of solvent and ions. Grounded on cutting-edge multiphysics theories for soft active materials, the proposed model is primarily applied to ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs). First, the influence of shear deformation on the IPMC response is analyzed through semi-analytical solutions obtained via the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Second, the novel electrochemo-poromechanical theory is used to predict the curvature relaxation and electric discharge that are observed in IPMC actuation and sensing, respectively, under a sustained stimulus. This newly formulated theory is, in turn, applied to biological cell clusters. Here, important mechanical considerations are integrated into classical bioelectrical models, thus offering novel insights into the interplay of mechanical and electrical signaling in the coordination of developmental processes.

The amount, composition, and timing of food intake can profoundly affect sports performance. Good nutritional practice will help athletes train hard, recover quickly, and adapt more effectively with less risk of illness and injury. Food can contribute not only to the enjoyment of life, but also to success in sport.
In June 2003, 30 of the world's leading researchers in nutrition met at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss nutrition in sports. The aim of the conference was to review the latest developments in the world of sports nutrition, to follow-up on developments since the previous conference in 1991, and to draw guidelines to help athletes and coaches to optimize their performance by using nutrition to support training.
The subjects discussed include: energy balance and body composition; the role of carbohydrates; the role of proteins and amino acids; athlete fluid and electrolyte requirements; the use of dietary supplements; and nutrition and immune function.

Human Movements in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Cezary Biele Human Movements in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Cezary Biele
R4,219 Discovery Miles 42 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses human-computer interaction (HCI) which is a multidisciplinary field of study which aims at developing and implementing tools and techniques to attain an effective and efficient interaction between the humans (the users) and computers. In recent years, there is an increase of interest of HCI researchers and practitioners in the inclusion of gaze gestures which can greatly enhance the communication between the human user and the computer, as well as other more "physical" communication involving all what can be learned from movements of the human body, from face, hand, leg, foot, etc., to the whole body movement, even extending to the involvement of groups of agents, even society. These explicitly human-centric issues in the development, design, analysis, and implementation of the HCI systems are discussed in the book. A comprehensive state of the art is given complemented with original own proposals. As opposed to more traditional formal and IT based analyses, the discussion is here more focused on relevant research results from psychology and psychophysiology, and other soft, cognitive, etc., sciences. Remarks on the relevance of affective computing are also mentioned.
