Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense - When the Fight Goes to the Ground (Includes DVD) (Paperback): O'Connell Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense - When the Fight Goes to the Ground (Includes DVD) (Paperback)
O'Connell; Foreword by Hiscoe, Weintz
R198 Discovery Miles 1 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This instructional Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu book & DVD combo offers a complete guide to ground fighting principles and techniques to use when the fight goes to the ground. In a street defense scenario, the ground is a dangerous place to be. While it's a good idea to learn defensive strategies for ground fighting, it is important to put those skills into the context of how you want to use them. Whether you're an experienced submission-grappling competitor, a traditional martial artist training in a stand-up striking style, or law enforcement professional, Ground Defense provides you with an essential system of self-protection for street-oriented ground scenarios. Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense: When the Fight Goes to the Ground establishes the risks and hazards of various ground defense scenarios, presenting effective strategies for neutralizing and minimizing them. You will learn a wide range of tools for defense, including the targeting of vital areas, body shifting/control techniques, and the concept of "weapons of opportunity." All of these techniques are easy to learn and apply, providing an adaptable skill set for anyone, regardless of size, strength or gender. These tools are then shown in various combinations, with examples of how to use them against specific types of attacks, including simple hold-downs, ground and pound, submission grappling pins, chokes, arm locks, leg locks, knife attacks and multiple assailant scenarios. In addition, this martial arts book gives you useful training suggestions and regimens, addressing graduated skill development, challenges presented by different body types, and safety practices at all levels of training. All disc content is alternatively accessible on tuttlepublishing.com/downloadable-content.

Rebecca Duncombe
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With growing concerns over declining levels of school readiness and physical activity, this book highlights the importance of quality early movement experiences and explores the connection between poor early Physical Development opportunities and later difficulties in the classroom. The book outlines the Physical Development needs of babies, toddlers and young children up to the age of eight, and suggests practical ways in which these can be provided for. It explores key concepts and terms, such as physical literacy, fundamental movement skills, sport, physical activity and Physical Education (PE), in relation to young children's Physical Development needs and discusses age-appropriate provision. R1,977 Discovery Miles 19 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The amount, composition, and timing of food intake can profoundly affect sports performance. Good nutritional practice will help athletes train hard, recover quickly, and adapt more effectively with less risk of illness and injury. Food can contribute not only to the enjoyment of life, but also to success in sport.
In June 2003, 30 of the world's leading researchers in nutrition met at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss nutrition in sports. The aim of the conference was to review the latest developments in the world of sports nutrition, to follow-up on developments since the previous conference in 1991, and to draw guidelines to help athletes and coaches to optimize their performance by using nutrition to support training.
The subjects discussed include: energy balance and body composition; the role of carbohydrates; the role of proteins and amino acids; athlete fluid and electrolyte requirements; the use of dietary supplements; and nutrition and immune function.

This book explores a spectrum of literacies relevant to dance, physical education and sports. It examines conceptions of movement literacies, disciplinary literacies and traditional school literacies. It includes theory, research and instructional practice related to the uses of traditional print, multimedia, and embodied physical literacies. These literacies function independently but are also overlapping and mutually reinforcing in comprehensive instructional planning. As movement and activity-related fields continue to explore the potential for multiple literacies, this book introduces numerous possibilities, both conceptual and practical, for consideration. ·        Pre-service and in-service teachers in dance and physical education programs will learn how to integrate multiple literacies in curriculum design and teaching. ·        Graduate students will examine theoretical premises of movement and disciplinary literacies and become familiar with original research on these topics. ·        Teachers, school administrators, coaches and athletic directors will use the book in order to guide the inclusion of movement and activity-based fields in the disciplinary literacy agenda now common in Pre-K through secondary schooling. Media rich chapters, including photographic, video and other graphic images, allow students to access concepts through multiple modalities

Team Sports Training - The Complexity Model (Hardcover): Javier Mallo Team Sports Training - The Complexity Model (Hardcover)
Javier Mallo
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Team Sports Training: The Complexity Model presents a novel approach to team sports training, examining football (soccer), rugby union, field hockey, basketball, handball and futsal through the paradigm of complexity. Under a traditional prism, these sports have been analysed using a deterministic perspective, where the constituent dimensions of the sportsmen were independently examined and treated in isolation. It was expected that the body worked as a perfect machine and, once all the components were maximised, the sportsmen improved their performance. If the same closed recipe was applied to all of the players who formed part of the squad, the global team performance was expected to be enhanced. As much as these reductionist models seem coherent, when contrasted in practice we see that the reality of team sports is far more different from the closed conditions in which they were idealised. Team sports contain variable, heterogeneous and non-linear constraints which require the development of a different logic to organise their training. During the last few years, ecological psychology, the dynamical systems theory or the constraints-led approach have opened interesting fields of research from which many conceptual foundations can be applied to team sports. Based on this contemporary framework, the current book presents the study of the players and the teams as complex systems, using coordination dynamics to explain the emergence of the self-organisation episodes that characterise them. In addition, this thinking line provides the reader with the ability to apply all of these innovative concepts to their practical training scenarios. Altogether, it is intended to challenge the reader to re-think their training strategy and to develop an original theory and practice of training specific to team sports.
