Principles of Convective Heat Transfer (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2001): Massoud Kaviany Principles of Convective Heat Transfer (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2001)
Massoud Kaviany
R2,817 Discovery Miles 28 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Convective heat transfer is the result of fluid flowing between objects of different temperatures. Thus it may be the objective of a process (as in refrigeration) or it may be an incidental aspect of other processes. Intended for graduate students and for researchers entering the field, this text reviews in a concise and unified manner recent contributions to the principles of convective heat transfer for single and multi-phase systems: It summarizes the role of the fundamental mechanism and the governing differential equations, describes approximation schemes and phenomenological models, and examines their solutions and applications. After a review of the basic physics and thermodynamics, the book divides the subject into three parts. Part 1 deals with single-medium transfers, specifically with intraphase transfers in single-phase flows and with intramedium transfers in two-phase flows. Part 2 deals with fluid-solid transfer processes, both in cases where the interface is small and in cases where it is large, as well as liquid-liquid transfer processes. Part 3 considers three media, addressing both liquid-solid-solid and gas-liquid-solid systems. The emphasis on the presence multiple phases and on energy-conversion mechanisms, such as phase changes or chemical reactions, will make this text a valuable reference for practicing engineers. This new edition has been updated throughout and contains new examples and problems.

Planning of Geothermal District Heating Systems (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Alberto Piatti, Carlo Piemonte, Edoardo Szegoe Planning of Geothermal District Heating Systems (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Alberto Piatti, Carlo Piemonte, Edoardo Szegoe
R5,320 Discovery Miles 53 200 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Geothermal waters, hot enough to provide direct heating, are available in many parts of the world. Some are exploited already but many more are only now being considered, as planners begin to recognize the environmental benefits of this unfamiliar energy resource. The relative economic benefits are more marginal, however, and a successful scheme requires careful design and optimization. The nature of geothermal resources imposes special conditions which may be unfamiliar to many plant engineers. In addition, many different approaches are possible, depending on the characteristics of the resource and the user and on the operator's requirements. Must the scheme be optimized for energy recovery or for financial return, or is it more important that it should remain profitable over as wide a range of conditions as possible? This book, written by professional plant engineers with first-hand experience, is designed to guide plant engineers through the different options and to help in this optimization process.

Robust Control of Diesel Ship Propulsion (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Nikolaos Xiros Robust Control of Diesel Ship Propulsion (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Nikolaos Xiros
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The control of marine engines and propulsion plants is a field of increasing interest to the maritime industry. The author's participation in a number of closely related research projects together with practical shipboard experience allows Robust Control of Diesel Ship Propulsion to present a broad view of the needs and problems of the shipping industry in this area. The book covers a number of models and control types: An integrated nonlinear state-space model of the marine propulsion system is developed. This is based upon physical principles that incorporate uncertainties due to engine thermodynamics and disturbances due to propeller hydrodynamics. The model employs artificial neural nets for depicting the nonlinearities of the thermochemical processes of engine power/torque generation and the engine-turbocharger dynamical interaction; neural nets combine the required mathematical flexibility and formalism with numerical training and calibration options using either thermodynamic engine models or measured data series. The neural state-space model is decomposed appropriately to provide a linearised perturbation model suitable for controller synthesis. The proportional integral (derivative) control law is examined under the perspective of shaft speed regulation for enhanced disturbance rejection of the propeller load. The typical marine shafting system dynamics and configuration allow for a smart implementation of the D-term based on shaft torque feedback. Full-state feedback control is, examined for increased robustness of the compensated plant against parametric uncertainty and neglected dynamics. The H* requirements on the closed-loop transfer matrix are appropriately decomposed to similar ones on scalar transfer functions, which give specifications which are easier to manipulate. In effect, the methods are comparatively assessed and suggestions for extensions and practical applications are given. This synthetic approach to the propulsion plant control and operational problems should prove useful for both theoreticians and practitioners, and can be easily adopted for the control of other processes or systems outside the marine field, as well.

Mixture Formation in Internal Combustion Engines (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Carsten Baumgarten Mixture Formation in Internal Combustion Engines (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Carsten Baumgarten
R4,177 Discovery Miles 41 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A systematic control of mixture formation with modern high-pressure injection systems enables us to achieve considerable improvements of the combustion pr- ess in terms of reduced fuel consumption and engine-out raw emissions. However, because of the growing number of free parameters due to more flexible injection systems, variable valve trains, the application of different combustion concepts within different regions of the engine map, etc., the prediction of spray and m- ture formation becomes increasingly complex. For this reason, the optimization of the in-cylinder processes using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) becomes increasingly important. In these CFD codes, the detailed modeling of spray and mixture formation is a prerequisite for the correct calculation of the subsequent processes like ignition, combustion and formation of emissions. Although such simulation tools can be viewed as standard tools today, the predictive quality of the sub-models is c- stantly enhanced by a more accurate and detailed modeling of the relevant pr- esses, and by the inclusion of new important mechanisms and effects that come along with the development of new injection systems and have not been cons- ered so far. In this book the most widely used mathematical models for the simulation of spray and mixture formation in 3D CFD calculations are described and discussed. In order to give the reader an introduction into the complex processes, the book starts with a description of the fundamental mechanisms and categories of fuel - jection, spray break-up, and mixture formation in internal combustion engines.

Third Generation Photovoltaics - Advanced Solar Energy Conversion (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Martin A Green Third Generation Photovoltaics - Advanced Solar Energy Conversion (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Martin A Green
R4,782 Discovery Miles 47 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, is now the fastest growing technology for electricity generation. Present "first generation" products use the same silicon wafers as in microelectronics. "Second generation" thin-films, now entering the market, have the potential to greatly improve the economics by eliminating material costs. Martin Green, one of the worlds foremost photovoltaic researchers, argues in this book that "second generation" photovoltaics will eventually reach its own material cost constraints, engendering a "third generation" of high performance thin-films. The book explores, self-consistently, the energy conversion potential of advanced approaches for improving photovoltaic performance and outlines possible implementation paths.

The Kuroshio Power Plant (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Falin Chen The Kuroshio Power Plant (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Falin Chen
R4,138 R3,337 Discovery Miles 33 370 Save R801 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

By outlining a new design or the Kuroshio power plant, new approaches to turbine design, anchorage system planning, deep sea marine engineering and power plant operations and maintenance are explored and suggested. The impact on the local environment, particularly in the face of natural disasters, is also considered to provide a well rounded introduction to plan and build a 30MW pilot power plant. Following a literature review, the six chapters of this book propose a conceptual design by focusing on the plant's core technologies and establish the separate analysis logics for turbine design and the relay platforms. This is tempered against the ecological impact of both the construction and operation of the plant. These proposed technologies and plans can be further applied to power generation in other waters such as the Gulf Stream, the East Australian Current the Humboldt Current and the East Africa Coastal Current. Engineers, students and industry professionals are provided with a solid introduction to power plant technology as well as a design with specific real world applications
