Mathematical Control Theory - Deterministic Finite Dimensional Systems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998): Eduardo D Sontag Mathematical Control Theory - Deterministic Finite Dimensional Systems (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998)
Eduardo D Sontag
R2,394 Discovery Miles 23 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Geared primarily to an audience consisting of mathematically advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students, this text may additionally be used by engineering students interested in a rigorous, proof-oriented systems course that goes beyond the classical frequency-domain material and more applied courses. The minimal mathematical background required is a working knowledge of linear algebra and differential equations. The book covers what constitutes the common core of control theory and is unique in its emphasis on foundational aspects. While covering a wide range of topics written in a standard theorem/proof style, it also develops the necessary techniques from scratch. In this second edition, new chapters and sections have been added, dealing with time optimal control of linear systems, variational and numerical approaches to nonlinear control, nonlinear controllability via Lie-algebraic methods, and controllability of recurrent nets and of linear systems with bounded controls.

Blade-Pitch Control for Wind Turbine Load Reductions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Wai Hou (Alan) Lio Blade-Pitch Control for Wind Turbine Load Reductions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Wai Hou (Alan) Lio
R3,806 Discovery Miles 38 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This thesis investigates the use of blade-pitch control and real-time wind measurements to reduce the structural loads on the rotors and blades of wind turbines. The first part of the thesis studies the main similarities between the various classes of current blade-pitch control strategies, which have to date remained overlooked by mainstream literature. It also investigates the feasibility of an estimator design that extracts the turbine tower motion signal from the blade load measurements. In turn, the second part of the thesis proposes a novel model predictive control layer in the control architecture that enables an existing controller to incorporate the upcoming wind information and constraint-handling features. This thesis provides essential clarifications of and systematic design guidelines for these topics, which can benefit the design of wind turbines and, it is hoped, inspire the development of more innovative mechanical load-reduction solutions in the field of wind energy.

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Alessandro Astolfi, Dimitrios Karagiannis, Romeo Ortega Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Alessandro Astolfi, Dimitrios Karagiannis, Romeo Ortega
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control with Applications provides a detailed treatment of the design of robust adaptive controllers for nonlinear systems with uncertainties. The authors employ a new tool based on the ideas of system immersion and manifold invariance. Departing, in part, from the Lyapunov-function approach of classical control, new algorithms are delivered for the construction of robust asymptotically-stabilising and adaptive control laws for nonlinear systems. The methods proposed lead to modular schemes. These algorithms cater for nonlinear systems with both parametric and dynamic uncertainties. This innovative strategy is illustrated with several examples and case studies from real applications. Power converters, electrical machines, mechanical systems, autonomous aircraft and computer vision are among the practical systems dealt with. Researchers working on adaptive and nonlinear control theory or on control applications will find this monograph of conspicuous interest while graduate students in control systems and control engineers working with electrical, mechanical or electromechanical systems can also gain much insight and assistance from the methods and algorithms detailed.

Flexible Spacecraft Dynamics, Control and Guidance - Technologies by Giovanni Campolo (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Leonardo... Flexible Spacecraft Dynamics, Control and Guidance - Technologies by Giovanni Campolo (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Leonardo Mazzini
R5,431 Discovery Miles 54 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an up-to-date compendium on spacecraft attitude and orbit control (AOC) that offers a systematic and complete treatment of the subject with the aim of imparting the theoretical and practical knowledge that is required by designers, engineers, and researchers. After an introduction on the kinematics of the flexible and agile space vehicles, the modern architecture and functions of an AOC system are described and the main AOC modes reviewed with possible design solutions and examples. The dynamics of the flexible body in space are then considered using an original Lagrangian approach suitable for the control applications of large space flexible structures. Subsequent chapters address optimal control theory, attitude control methods, and orbit control applications, including the optimal orbital transfer with finite and infinite thrust. The theory is integrated with a description of current propulsion systems, with the focus especially on the new electric propulsion systems and state of the art sensors and actuators.

Time-Varying Systems and Computations (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Patrick de Wilde, Alle-Jan van der Veen Time-Varying Systems and Computations (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Patrick de Wilde, Alle-Jan van der Veen
R4,270 Discovery Miles 42 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Time-Varying Systems and Computations is a unique book providing a detailed and consistent exposition of a powerful unifying framework (developed by the authors) for the study of time-variant systems and the computational aspects and problems that arise in this context. While complex function theory and linear algebra provide much of the fundamental mathematics needed by engineers engaged in numerical computations, signal processing and/or control, there has long been a large, abstruse gap between the two fields. This book shows the reader how the gap between analysis and linear algebra can be bridged. In a fascinating monograph, the authors explore, discover and exploit many interesting links that exist between classical linear algebraic concepts and complex analysis. Time-Varying Systems and Computations opens for the reader new and exciting perspectives on linear algebra from the analysis point of view. It clearly explains a framework that allows the extension of classical results, from complex function theory to the case of time-variant operators and even finite-dimensional matrices. These results allow the user to obtain computationally feasible schemes and models for complex and large-scale systems. Time-Varying Systems and Computations will be of interest to a broad spectrum of researchers and professionals, including applied mathematicians, control theorists, systems theorists and numerical analysts. It can also be used as a graduate course in linear time-varying system theory.

Extensions and Relaxations (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): A.G. Chentsov, S. I. Morina Extensions and Relaxations (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
A.G. Chentsov, S. I. Morina
R1,635 Discovery Miles 16 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book a general topological construction of extension is proposed for problems of attainability in topological spaces under perturbation of a system of constraints. This construction is realized in a special class of generalized elements defined as finitely additive measures. A version of the method of programmed iterations is constructed. This version realizes multi-valued control quasistrategies, which guarantees the solution of the control problem that consists in guidance to a given set under observation of phase constraints.

Audience: The book will be of interest to researchers, and graduate students in the field of optimal control, mathematical systems theory, measure and integration, functional analysis, and general topology.

Theoretical Developments and Applications of Non-Integer Order Systems - 7th Conference on Non-Integer Order Calculus and Its Applications, Szczecin, Poland (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Stefan Domek, Pawel Dworak
R4,211 R3,410 Discovery Miles 34 100 Save R801 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is devoted to presentation of new results of research on systems of non-integer order, called also fractional systems. Their analysis and practical implementation have been the object of spontaneous development for a few last decades. The fractional order models can depict a physical plant better than the classical integer order ones. This covers different research fields such as insulator properties, visco-elastic materials, electrodynamic, electrothermal, electrochemical, economic processes modelling etc. On the other hand fractional controllers often outperform their integer order counterparts. This volume contains new ideas and examples of implementation, theoretical and pure practical aspects of using a non-integer order calculus. It is divided into four parts covering: mathematical fundamentals, modeling and approximations, controllability, observability and stability problems and practical applications of fractional control systems. The first part expands the base of tools and methods of the mathematical basis for non-integer order calculus. Part two focuses on new methods and developments in process modeling and fractional derivatives approximations. In the third part a bunch of papers which raise problems of controllability, observability and stability of non-integer order systems is provided. Part four is devoted to presentation of different fractional order control applications. This book was created thanks to many experts in the field of fractional calculus: authors, anonymous referees whose comments allowed us to improve the final form of the papers and active and inspiring discussion of the participants of RRNR'2015, the 7th Conference on Non-Integer Order Calculus and Its Applications that was organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin, Poland.

Control Theory of Multi-fingered Hands - A Modelling and Analytical-Mechanics Approach for Dexterity and Intelligence... Control Theory of Multi-fingered Hands - A Modelling and Analytical-Mechanics Approach for Dexterity and Intelligence (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Suguru Arimoto
R2,801 Discovery Miles 28 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The hand is an agency of the brain; it reflects activities of the brain and thereby can be seen as a mirror to the mind. The dexterity of the hand has been investigated widely in developmental psychology and in anthropology. Since robotics launched in the mid-1970s, numerous multi-fingered hands mimicking the human hand have been designed and made in a number of universities and research institutes, in addition to sophisticated prosthetic hands with plural fingers.

Control Theory of Multi-fingered Hands presents a comprehensive insight into the intelligence and dexterity of robotic multi-fingered hands from both the physical and control- theoretic viewpoints. The book:

  • focuses on the problem of how to control dexterous movements of fingers interacting with an object in the execution of everyday tasks;
  • clarifies what kinds of sensory-motor coordinated signals are necessary and sufficient for realising stable grasping and/or object manipulation, in particular, the synergistic choices of control gains in co-activation signals for finger muscles and tendons crucial in realising secure pinching motions;
  • derives a mathematical model of the dynamics of a complicated mechanism of multiple fingers with multiple joints physically interacting; and,
  • considers the problem of how to recreate the function of "blind grasping."

Control Theory of Multi-fingered Hands will be a useful reference for postgraduate students and researchers in this field, as well as engineers and roboticists.

New Frontiers in Information and Production Systems Modelling and Analysis - Incentive Mechanisms, Competence Management,... New Frontiers in Information and Production Systems Modelling and Analysis - Incentive Mechanisms, Competence Management, Knowledge-based Production (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)

R3,911 R3,380 Discovery Miles 33 800 Save R531 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book demonstrates how to apply modern approaches to complex system control in practical applications involving knowledge-based systems. The dimensions of knowledge-based systems are extended by incorporating new perspectives from control theory, multimodal systems and simulation methods. The book is divided into three parts: theory, production system and information system applications. One of its main focuses is on an agent-based approach to complex system analysis. Moreover, specialised forms of knowledge-based systems (like e-learning, social network, and production systems) are introduced with a new formal approach to knowledge system modelling. The book, which offers a valuable resource for researchers engaged in complex system analysis, is the result of a unique cooperation between scientists from applied computer science (mainly from Poland) and leading system control theory researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences' Trapeznikov Institute of Control Sciences.

Stability and Oscillations of Nonlinear Pulse-Modulated Systems (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Arkadii Kh. Gelig, Alexander N. Churilov Stability and Oscillations of Nonlinear Pulse-Modulated Systems (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Arkadii Kh. Gelig, Alexander N. Churilov
R4,440 Discovery Miles 44 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There are two main fields of application of pulse-modulated sys tems, communications and control. Communication is not a subject of our concern in this book. Controlling by a pulse-modulated feed attracted our efforts. The peculiarity of this book is that all back the sampled-data systems are considered in continuous time, so no discrete time schemes are presented. And finally, we pay a little at tention to pulse-amplitude modulation which was treated in a vast number of publications. The primary fields of our interest are pulse width, pulse-frequency, and pulse-phase modulated control systems. The study of such systems meets with substantial difficulties. An engineer, who embarks on theoretical investigations of a pulse-mo dulated control, is often embarrassed by the sophisticated mathe matical tools he needs to know. When a mathematician, who looks for practical applications of his mathematical machinery, meets with these systems, he faces a lot of of complicated technical schemes and terms. Probably this is the reason why publications on pulse modu lation are seldom in scientific journals. As for books on this subject (save on amplitude modulation), the significant part of them is in Russian and hardly available for a non-Russian reader."

Nonlinear Vibration with Control - For Flexible and Adaptive Structures (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015): David Wagg, Simon Neild Nonlinear Vibration with Control - For Flexible and Adaptive Structures (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015)
David Wagg, Simon Neild
R4,716 R3,645 Discovery Miles 36 450 Save R1,071 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive discussion of nonlinear multi-modal structural vibration problems, and shows how vibration suppression can be applied to such systems by considering a sample set of relevant control techniques. It covers the basic principles of nonlinear vibrations that occur in flexible and/or adaptive structures, with an emphasis on engineering analysis and relevant control techniques. Understanding nonlinear vibrations is becoming increasingly important in a range of engineering applications, particularly in the design of flexible structures such as aircraft, satellites, bridges, and sports stadia. There is an increasing trend towards lighter structures, with increased slenderness, often made of new composite materials and requiring some form of deployment and/or active vibration control. There are also applications in the areas of robotics, mechatronics, micro electrical mechanical systems, non-destructive testing and related disciplines such as structural health monitoring. Two broader themes cut across these application areas: (i) vibration suppression - or active damping - and, (ii) adaptive structures and machines. In this expanded 2nd edition, revisions include: An additional section on passive vibration control, including nonlinear vibration mounts. A more in-depth description of semi-active control, including switching and continuous schemes for dampers and other semi-active systems. A complet e reworking of normal form analysis, which now includes new material on internal resonance, bifurcation of backbone curves and stability analysis of forced responses.Further analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of cables including internal resonance leading to whirling. Additional material on the vibration of systems with impact friction. The book is accessible to practitioners in the areas of application, as well as students and researchers working on related topics. In particular, the aim is to introduce the key concepts of nonlinear vibration to readers who have an understanding of linear vibration and/or linear control, but no specialist knowledge in nonlinear dynamics or nonlinear control.

Complex Conjugate Matrix Equations for Systems and Control (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Aiguo Wu, Ying Zhang Complex Conjugate Matrix Equations for Systems and Control (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Aiguo Wu, Ying Zhang
R3,626 Discovery Miles 36 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book is the first book on complex matrix equations including the conjugate of unknown matrices. The study of these conjugate matrix equations is motivated by the investigations on stabilization and model reference tracking control for discrete-time antilinear systems, which are a particular kind of complex system with structure constraints. It proposes useful approaches to obtain iterative solutions or explicit solutions for several types of complex conjugate matrix equation. It observes that there are some significant differences between the real/complex matrix equations and the complex conjugate matrix equations. For example, the solvability of a real Sylvester matrix equation can be characterized by matrix similarity; however, the solvability of the con-Sylvester matrix equation in complex conjugate form is related to the concept of con-similarity. In addition, the new concept of conjugate product for complex polynomial matrices is also proposed in order to establish a unified approach for solving a type of complex matrix equation.

A Practical Approach to Robustness Analysis with Aeronautical Applications (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Gilles Ferreres A Practical Approach to Robustness Analysis with Aeronautical Applications (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Gilles Ferreres
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

1. MOTIVATION In many physical situations, a plant model is often provided with a qualitative or quantitative measure of associated model uncertainties. On the one hand, the validity of the model is guaranteed only inside a frequency band, so that nearly nothing can be said about the behavior of the real plant at high frequencies. On the other hand, if the model is derived on the basis of physical equations, it can be parameterized as a function of a few physical parameters, which are usually not perfectly known in practice. This is e.g. the case in aeronautical systems: as an example, the ae- dynamic model of an airplane is derived from the flight mechanics eq- tions. When synthesizing the aircraft control law, it is then necessary to take into account uncertainties in the values of the stability derivatives, which correspond to the physical coefficients of the aerodynamic model. Moreover, this airplane model does not perfectly represent the be- vior of the real aircraft. As a simple example, the flight control system or the autopilot are usually synthesized just using the aerodynamic model, thus without accounting for the flexible mechanicalstructure: the c- responding dynamics are indeed considered as high frequency neglected 1 dynamics, with respect to the dynamics of the rigid model .

Computer Intensive Methods in Control and Signal Processing - The Curse of Dimensionality (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Kevin Warwick,... Computer Intensive Methods in Control and Signal Processing - The Curse of Dimensionality (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Kevin Warwick, Miroslav Karny
R2,822 Discovery Miles 28 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Due to the rapid increase in readily available computing power, a corre sponding increase in the complexity of problems being tackled has occurred in the field of systems as a whole. A plethora of new methods which can be used on the problems has also arisen with a constant desire to deal with more and more difficult applications. Unfortunately by increasing the ac curacy in models employed along with the use of appropriate algorithms with related features, the resultant necessary computations can often be of very high dimension. This brings with it a whole new breed of problem which has come to be known as "The Curse of Dimensionality" . The expression "Curse of Dimensionality" can be in fact traced back to Richard Bellman in the 1960's. However, it is only in the last few years that it has taken on a widespread practical significance although the term di mensionality does not have a unique precise meaning and is being used in a slightly different way in the context of algorithmic and stochastic complex ity theory or in every day engineering. In principle the dimensionality of a problem depends on three factors: on the engineering system (subject), on the concrete task to be solved and on the available resources. A system is of high dimension if it contains a lot of elements/variables and/or the rela tionship/connection between the elements/variables is complicated."
