The workout you want is yours when you delve into this ...For Dummies edition. So lace up your cross-trainers! It's time to weight lift on Monday, play volleyball on Wednesday, and take a fitness class on Friday!
Whatever your goals or your level of fitness, this book offers you a plan to make you look and feel great 24/7.
I've tried every workout and fad diet so you don't have to. As a former PE teacher, athlete, personal trainer and now one of the biggest fitness YouTubers in the World (a.k.a an absolute weirdo who films themselves doing stuff), the most common question I get from followers and even people in the street is, 'How do I get a body like yours?'
People will almost whisper it, as if I'm going to usher them into a dark alleyway and reply with some kind of mystical secret. Like they're expecting to be told that they need to drink 263ml of maple syrup three times a day whilst reading the complete works of Shakespeare to their dog. Other times they seem to want me to reveal a protocol of supplements, with an inference that I must be taking steroids or other drugs, because having a good body without chemicals is now seen by some as almost impossible. It's not.
This book is my attempt to shatter all of those myths and give it to you entirely straight. It is about understanding how to live your life in a more healthy, sustainable and happy way-and how to maintain that forever. And I'm not talking about becoming a monk and only eating lettuce. If you want to eat McDonald's, go for it. Eating crappy food doesn't make you fat and by the time you're done with the book you'll understand why. I want to arm you with your own set of tools so that you can tailor my methods and experiences to you and your own unique situation.
A visual presentation of Tibetan yoga, the hidden treasure at the
heart of the Tibetan Tantric Buddhist tradition - Explains the core
principles and practices of Tibetan yoga with illustrated
instructions - Explores esoteric practices less familiar in the
West, including sexual yoga, lucid dream yoga, and yoga enhanced by
psychoactive substances - Draws on scientific research and
contemplative traditions to explain Tibetan yoga from a historical,
anthropological, and biological perspective - Includes full-color
reproductions of previously unpublished works of Himalayan art
Tibetan yoga is the hidden treasure at the heart of the Tibetan
Tantric Buddhist tradition: a spiritual and physical practice that
seeks an expanded experience of the human body and its energetic
and cognitive potential. In this pioneering and highly illustrated
overview, Ian A. Baker introduces the core principles and practices
of Tibetan yoga alongside historical illustrations of the movements
and beautiful, full-color works of Himalayan art, never before
published. Drawing on Tibetan cultural history and scientific
research, the author explores Tibetan yogic practices from
historical, anthropological, and biological perspectives, providing
a rich background to enable the reader to understand this ancient
tradition with both the head and the heart. He provides complete,
illustrated instructions for meditations, visualizations, and
sequences of practices for the breath and body, as well as esoteric
practices including sexual yoga, lucid dream yoga, and yoga
enhanced by psychoactive plants. He explains how, while Tibetan
yoga absorbed aspects of Indian hatha yoga and Taoist energy
cultivation, this ancient practice largely begins where
physically-oriented yoga and chi-gong end, by directing prana, or
vital energy, toward the awakening of latent human abilities and
cognitive states. He shows how Tibetan yoga techniques facilitate
transcendence of the self and suffering and ultimately lead to
Buddhist enlightenment through transformative processes of body,
breath, and consciousness. Richly illustrated with contemporary
ethnographic photography of Tibetan yoga practitioners and rare
works of Himalayan art, including Tibetan thangka paintings, murals
from the Dalai Lama's once-secret meditation chamber in Lhasa, and
images of yogic practice from historical practice manuals and
medical treatises, this groundbreaking book reveals Tibetan yoga's
ultimate expression of the interconnectedness of all existence.

The asanas or postures of yoga have been found so beneficial as to
make yoga virtually mainstream in British and American culture. Yet
traditionally they are just one part of a much larger scheme of
teaching leading the consciousness of the bliss of
non-separateness. Yoga, after all, means union. Jenny Beeken is an
internationally-known yoga teacher with a particular sensitivity
and intuition. For her, the 'Eight Limbs', as the philosophy of
yoga is known, offer the perfect path as well as one of the oldest
on the planet. They instruct the student in meditation and they
offer an ethical system based on ideas such as non-possessiveness,
living with enthusiasm, self-study and contentment. Jenny compares
the ancient wisdom of yoga with that of modern spiritual teachers
and finds remarkable similarities as well as relevance for today.
This is a book that will deepen the understanding of any yoga
student and be a useful introduction for anyone who wishes to see
yoga in its wider context.
How to use Yoga demystifies the art of yoga, making it accessible
to everyone who would like to start to practice at home, safely and
effectively. The first part, Towards Physical Well-Being, presents
a selection of 41 postures and variants, which can be attempted by
beginners of all ages. The following section, Towards Mental Peace,
introduces simple techniques for breath awareness and control. The
second part, A Ten-Week Course, presents a unique course for
beginners of postures and preparatory breath control techniques,
with a photographic catalogue for each week. The book also includes
a section on postures helpful for common problems, such as
headaches, stiffness, pain in the shoulders and backache.
Yoga is not just a modern fad, it is one of the oldest forms of
bodywork, perhaps even the oldest, that we have. The very length of
the tradition behind it is one of the things that appeals to its
followers in the West. "Morning Yoga, Evening Yoga" offers two
sequences of postures that are popular today. One, the Surya
Namaskar, is probably the oldest such sequence in the tradition. It
translates to 'Salutation to the Sun,' a name by which it is often
known in the West. The second sequence, Chandra Namaskar, is much
more recent and is less well known. It translates as 'Salutation to
the Moon,' and where Surya Namaskar is traditionally an early
morning sequence, Chandra Namaskar is to do before sleeping.
"Morning Yoga, Evening Yoga", therefore, has an appeal to both the
larks and the owls among those who do yoga. Indeed, it is designed
to help owls face the morning better and larks cope with the
evening - to become more balanced in their routine. In addition,
Janita Stenhouse writes with a rare depth of understanding about
the history of the sequences, so that she can enlarge on
traditional teaching and provide alternative postures with
authority. She, also, knows the Sanskrit texts behind yoga and is
familiar with the mantra chants that traditionally accompany the
sequences. Almost unique among yoga books, "Morning Yoga, Evening
Yoga" is, also, about sound. Janita Stenhouse writes a column for
"Yoga and Health" and also has had a regular strip cartoon feature
there and in other yoga journals.
Beyond Measure is a fascinating exploration of the rituals,
routines, metrics and expectations through which we attempt to
quantify and ascribe value to our lives. With mordant humor and
penetrating intellect, Arndt casts her gaze beyond event-driven
narratives to the machinery underlying them: judo competitions
measured in weigh-ins and wait times; the significance of the
elliptical's stationary churn; the rote scripts of dating apps; the
stupefying sameness of the daily commute. Rachel Z. Arndt's writing
has appeared in Popular Mechanics, Quartz, The Believer, and
elsewhere. She received MFAs in nonfiction and poetry from the
University of Iowa, where she was an Iowa Arts Fellow and
nonfiction editor of The Iowa Review. After stints in Rhode Island
and New York, she now lives in Chicago and works as a reporter at
Modern Healthcare, covering healthcare technology.
