Maybe you've noticed. Today's superheroes and action heroes aren't as brawny and muscular as they used to be. In fact, almost all the characters in comic books and on TV have a fresh, new look--simplified, streamlined, edgier, with a hint of anime/cartoon design, and appealing to kids and adults alike. Now Christopher Hart, the superhero of how-to-draw books, has come to the rescue of artists everywhere with "Simplified" "Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist." Anatomy has always been a difficult subject, but for this book Hart uses his straightforward approach to show a simpler way. In clear step-by-step illustrations and text, he shows: how to draw streamlined figures in poses; body types and muscles; the mechanics of facial expression; how to know which muscles to eliminate in a simplified drawing; grouping muscles; muscle contours versus bone contours; muscles in classic comic-book poses like flying and punching; and more. Now artist can stop struggling with the fine points of anatomy and start creating modern looking heroes and heroines with help from "Simplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist."

Learning First in Black & White (2nd Edition) (Paperback, 2nd edition): Diane Solvang-Angell Learning First in Black & White (2nd Edition) (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Diane Solvang-Angell
R396 Discovery Miles 3 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Graphic designers combat the equivalent of "writer's block" with this system for creating fresh ideas and great designs on deadline. Learning First in Black and White introduces The Design Code (R), an idea-generating system developed by Northwest artist and educator, Fred Griffin. It is a remedy for the artist's equivalent of writer's block, those times when the well of ideas runs dry. This system makes it possible to find fresh ideas and execute great designs on deadline. Through many years of teaching design principles, Griffin found that if students worked first in black and white their grasp of basic design principles was much clearer than if they were dealing with the confusion of color. Color, a study unto itself, introduces an element of distraction-hence the title, Learning First in Black and White. In this book, each lesson is explained with geometric shapes, followed by illustrations of an apple visually repeating the concepts. At the end of the book is a section that gives tips on how to dig deeper for better ideas. It's an answer to the question, "Where do ideas come from?"

R544 R410 Discovery Miles 4 100 Save R134 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Magnificent! The best how-to manual ever published." - Kevin Kelly, Cool Tools Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand-in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Both comic book devotees and the uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once-underappreciated art form.

The graphic illustrations he produced for the 'broadsheets', the tabloids of the day, distributed on the streets of Mexico City became icons of Revolutionary Mexico, portraying murder, suicides, robberies, and disasters endured by the citizens, especially the Mestizo, of Mexico City.

The volume is dedicated to Shepard Fairey (Charleston, 1970), one of the best known urban art artists in the world. Established under the pseudonym of OBEY thanks to a successful campaign of stickers spread in a viral way, depicting the face of wrestling champion Andre The Giant, the American artist has achieved international visibility thanks to the portrait of Obama, immortalised in the iconic 2008 'Hope' poster for his presidential campaign. In these pages the artist presents 30 recent unpublished graphic works (2019), which retrace 30 years of activity through his most famous icons: many social and political themes that inspired his production, from the struggle for peace and against racial violence, the defense of human and gender dignity up to environment protection. The graphics constitute a unique and unrepeatable concept, designed specifically for the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, where they are put in dialogue with important works from the contemporary art collection of the Capitoline Superintendence, selected by the artist himself. The volume, with an intervention by Shepard Fairey and numerous critical texts, is completed by a biography and bibliographical apparatus. Text in English and Italian.

Up Against the Wall: Art, Activism, and the AIDS Poster offers nearly 200 examples of visually arresting and socially meaningful posters. Taken from more than 8,000 held in the collection in the University of Rochester's River Campus Libraries' Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation. The collection, one of the largest of its kind in the world, was donated to the University of Rochester by Dr. Edward Atwater. The book accompanies an exhibition of AIDS education posters displayed at the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. The posters, spanning the years from 1982 to the present, show how social, religious, civic, and public health agencies have addressed the controversial, often contested terrain of the HIV/AIDS pandemic within the public realm. Organizations and creators tailored their messages to audiences, both broad and very specific, and used a wide array of strategies, employing humor, emotion, scare tactics, simple scientific explanations, sexual imagery, and many other methods to communicate powerfully and effectively.

The Art of Destiny showcases the stunning art and design behind one of the most exciting franchises in gaming today. From the mysterious dunes of Mars to the jungles of Venus and the abandoned aerospace installations on the Moon, Destiny takes players across the ancient ruins of our solar system on their quest to defend Earth's last city and become legend. To build this expansive universe, the team at Bungie drew from a multitude of inspirations--from classic fantasy and science fiction worlds, the myth-meets-technology adventure of space operas, and the ornate design of medieval drapery juxtaposed with modern architecture--all of which combine to create a world uniquely imagined down to the smallest detail. The Art of Destiny is a celebration of the dynamic art at the heart of the game, featuring hundreds of pieces of concept illustrations, cinematic imagery, early sketches, and world-building graphic design. Christopher Finch
R408 R254 Discovery Miles 2 540 Save R154 (38%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the outset of his career, Norman Rockwell was not the most likely candidate for long-term celebrity; he was just one of many skilful illustrators working within the conventions of the day. But there was something tenacious about his vision, and something uncanny about his access to the wellsprings of public taste. Although technically he was an academic painter, he had the eye of a photographer and, as he became a mature artist, he used this eye to give us a picture of America that was familiar - astonishingly so - and at the same time unique. It seems familiar because it was everyone's dream of America; and it was unique because only Rockwell managed to bring it to life with such authority. This was, perhaps, an America that never existed, but it was an America the public wanted to exist. And Rockwell put it together from elements that were there for everyone to see. Rockwell helped preserve American myths, but, more than that, he recreated them and made them palatable for new generations. His function was to reassure people, to remind them of old values in times of rapid change.
