Immersion Education - Lessons from a Minority Language Context (Hardcover): Padraig O Duibhir Immersion Education - Lessons from a Minority Language Context (Hardcover)
Padraig O Duibhir
R3,075 Discovery Miles 30 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The body of research in this volume offers a detailed account of the success of young immersion learners of Irish in becoming competent speakers of the minority language. Taking account of in-class and out-of-class factors, it examines the variety of Irish spoken by the pupils, the extent to which the Irish spoken deviates from native-speaker norms, the degree to which pupils are aware of and attempt to acquire a native-like variety and the extent to which issues of identity and motivation are involved. The results highlight the limitations of an immersion system in generating active and accurate users of the language outside the immersion setting and will help immersion educators to gain a greater understanding of how young immersion learners learn and acquire the target language. The findings are placed in the context of other one-way immersion programmes internationally with a particular focus on minority language settings, and make an important contribution not only to our understanding of the Irish issues, but how the Irish situation can be placed in a broader scholarly and socio-political context.

The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children (Hardcover): Susan Grohs Iwamura The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children (Hardcover)
Susan Grohs Iwamura
R2,979 Discovery Miles 29 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1980 The Verbal Games of Pre-school Children states that in the course of acquiring language, every child recognizes that verbal interaction is a powerful tool which can be used to interpret and manipulate the world. During the last previous two decades developments in the study of both language acquisition and linguistic theory had begun to illustrate that the acquisition of a first language involves considerably more than the mere learning of grammatical structure. This view of learning had led researchers gradually to see children as more than grammarians devising grammatical constructs. The tendency at the time was to see the child as an active partner in what are essentially games of communication and invention during which the rules of usage as well as the rules of grammar are discovered. This study is based on extensive and detailed observation of the verbal interaction of two pre-school children, and as such offers far-reaching ideas and conclusions concerning the manner in which all children determine the role of language in their lives, whilst simultaneously learning how to piece it together.

Language Production (Paperback): Robert J. Hartsuiker, Kristof Strijkers Language Production (Paperback)
Robert J. Hartsuiker, Kristof Strijkers
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bringing together the latest research from world-leading academics, this edited volume is an authoritative resource on the psycholinguistic study of language production, exploring longstanding concepts as well as contemporary and emerging theories. Hartsuiker and Strijkers affirm that although language production may seem like a mundane everyday activity, it is in fact a remarkable human accomplishment. This comprehensive text presents an up-to-date overview of the key topics in the field, providing important theoretical and empirical challenges to the traditional and accepted modal view of language production. Each chapter explores in detail a different aspect of language production, covering traditional methods including written and signed production alongside emerging research on joint action production. Emphasising the neurobiological underpinnings of language, chapter authors showcase research that moves from a monologue-only approach to one that that considers production in more ecologically valid circumstances. Written in an accessible and compelling style, Language Production is essential reading for students and researchers of language production and psycholinguistics, as well as anyone that wishes to learn more about the fascinating topic of how humans produce language.

The Development of L2 Interactional Competence - A Multimodal Study of Complaining in French Interactions (Hardcover): Klara... The Development of L2 Interactional Competence - A Multimodal Study of Complaining in French Interactions (Hardcover)
Klara Skogmyr Marian
R4,035 Discovery Miles 40 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents unique insights into the development of L2 interactional competence through the lens of complaining, demonstrating how closer study of complaining as a social activity can enhance our understanding of certain aspects of language learning with implications for future L2 research. Employs a multimodal, longitudinal conversation analytic (CA) approach in its analysis of data from video-recorded interactions of several elementary and advanced L2 speakers of French as they build their interactional competence, understood as the ability to accomplish social actions and activities in the L2 in context-dependent and recipient-designed ways Calls attention to three key dimensions of complaining in these conversations-its structural organization; the interactional resources people use when they complain; and how speakers' shared interactional histories and changing social relationships affect complaint practices

Educating Emergent Bilingual Youth in High School - The Promise of Critical Language and Literacy Education (Hardcover): Jie Y.... Educating Emergent Bilingual Youth in High School - The Promise of Critical Language and Literacy Education (Hardcover)
Jie Y. Park
R4,159 Discovery Miles 41 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book revolves around educating recently arrived immigrant youth in the US who are emergent bilinguals. Drawing on a seven-year research collaboration with three ESL teachers in an urban secondary school in the US, it addresses questions around taking a critical approach to language and literacy education and what this looks like in everyday practice, as well as how recently arrived youth and emergent bilinguals participate in critical language and literacy education, and what can be learned and developed as a result. The chapters illustrate the praxis of critical language and literacy education undertaken by everyday ESL teachers; curricular materials and pedagogical practices that promote youths' engagement with, and analysis of, words and worlds; and finally, a methodological and relational approach to researching with classroom teachers. The book introduces teaching practices such as dialogic problem-posing, translanguaging and translation, the use of multimodal texts, and youth research on language. Arguing for the potential power of critical language and literacy education for immigrant youth and their teachers, this book will benefit educators, researchers, and graduate students in the fields of language and literacy, second language acquisition (SLA), ESL and TESOL pedagogy, and in curriculum studies, education of immigrant children and youth, and multicultural issues in education.

Diagnostic Writing Assessment - The Development and Validation of a Rating Scale (Hardcover, New edition): Ute Knoch Diagnostic Writing Assessment - The Development and Validation of a Rating Scale (Hardcover, New edition)
Ute Knoch
R2,081 Discovery Miles 20 810 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The diagnostic assessment of writing is an important aspect of language testing which has often been neclected in the literature. However, it is an area which poses special challenges to practioners both in the classroom and in large-scale testing situations. This book presents a study which set out to develop and validate a rating scale specifically designed for the diagnostic assessment of writing in an academic English setting. The scale was developed by analysing a large number of writing performances produced by both native speakers of English and learners of English as an additional language. The rating scale was then validated using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study showed that a detailed data-based rating scale is more valid and more useful for diagnostic purposes than the more commonly used impressionistic rating scale.

Expanding the Lexicon - Linguistic Innovation, Morphological Productivity, and Ludicity (Hardcover): Sabine Arndt-Lappe,... Expanding the Lexicon - Linguistic Innovation, Morphological Productivity, and Ludicity (Hardcover)
Sabine Arndt-Lappe, Angelika Braun, Claudine Moulin, Esme Winter-Froemel
R3,866 Discovery Miles 38 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon - understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level - by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers' motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Fundamental Considerations in Technology Mediated Language Assessment (Hardcover): Karim Sadeghi, Dan Douglas Fundamental Considerations in Technology Mediated Language Assessment (Hardcover)
Karim Sadeghi, Dan Douglas
R4,173 Discovery Miles 41 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fundamental Considerations in Technology Mediated Language Assessment aims to address issues such as how the forced integration of technology into second language assessment has shaped our understanding of key traditional concepts like validity, reliability, washback, authenticity, ethics, fairness, test security, and more. Although computer assisted language testing has been around for more than two decades in the context of high-stakes proficiency testing, much of language testing worldwide has shifted to 'at home' mode, and relies heavily on the mediation of digital technology, making its widespread application in classroom settings in response to the COVID-19 outbreak as unprecedented. Integration of technology into language assessment has brought with it countless affordances and at the same time challenges, both theoretically and practically. One major theoretical consideration requiring attention is the way technology has contributed to a re-conceptualisation of major assessment concepts/constructs. There is very limited literature available on theoretical underpinnings of technology mediated language assessment. This book aims to fill this gap. This book will appeal to academic specialists, practitioners or professionals in the field of language assessment, advanced and/or graduate students, and a range of scholars or professionals in disciplines like educational technology, applied linguistics and TESOL.

The Fluency Construct - Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Kelli D Cummings,... The Fluency Construct - Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Kelli D Cummings, Yaacov Petscher
R3,785 R2,184 Discovery Miles 21 840 Save R1,601 (42%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive overview of fluency as a construct and its assessment in the context of curriculum-based measurement (CBM). Comparing perspectives from language acquisition, reading, and mathematics, the book parses the vagueness and complexities surrounding fluency concepts and their resulting impact on testing, intervention, and students' educational development. Applications of this knowledge in screening and testing, ideas for creating more targeted measures, and advanced methods for studying fluency data demonstrate the overall salience of fluency within CBM. Throughout, contributors argue for greater specificity and nuance in isolating skills to be measured and improved, and for terminology that reflects those educational benchmarks. Included in the coverage: Indicators of fluent writing in beginning writers. Fluency in language acquisition, reading, and mathematics. Foundations of fluency-based assessments in behavioral and psychometric paradigms. Using response time and accuracy data to inform the measurement of fluency. Using individual growth curves to model reading fluency. Latent class analysis for reading fluency research. The Fluency Construct: Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in clinical child and school psychology, language and literature, applied linguistics, special education, neuropsychology, and social work.

Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners - Stories about Us (Paperback): Yan Liu, Jingjing Ji, Grace Wu, Min-Min Liang Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners - Stories about Us (Paperback)
Yan Liu, Jingjing Ji, Grace Wu, Min-Min Liang
R1,189 Discovery Miles 11 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners aims to serve as a stepping-stone for Chinese heritage language learners' future Chinese learning, inspiring them to reflect on their identities, learn Chinese American history, and embrace their cultural heritage. The book starts with talking about individuals and families and then expands to the Chinese and Asian American communities in the U.S. and eventually to the entire American society, all from the unique perspective of Chinese American students. Taking a macro approach (Kagan & Dillon, 2008) that builds learners' literacy skills on their initial abilities in speaking and listening, each lesson starts with listening and speaking activities and then moves to reading and writing. The content complexity and language difficulty are balanced to present rich content that matches students' critical thinking abilities in a language appropriate for their literacy level. Lively and humorous language makes the book a joy to read. Each lesson has a conversation and an essay to expose students to informal and formal registers. Moreover, authentic tasks are designed to facilitate students' language output, following the three modes of communication promoted by the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. This theme-based Chinese textbook is written for high school and college-level Chinese heritage language learners.

Consciousness and the Cultural Invention of Language (Hardcover): Filippo-Enrico Cardini Consciousness and the Cultural Invention of Language (Hardcover)
Filippo-Enrico Cardini
R4,023 Discovery Miles 40 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book studies the origins of language. It presents language as the product of a unique non-linguistic cognitive feature (i.e. metacognition) that emerged late in human evolution. Within this framework, the author lays special emphasis on the tight links that exist between language and consciousness, with the conviction that the creation of language was ultimately made possible by the onset of a new type of awareness that enabled the invention of words. The volume studies the parallels between human cultural behaviour and human language, discusses the motivational underpinnings that favoured the emergence of language, and offers a possible evolutionary timeline for the advent of language. It also addresses the question of whether artificial intelligence will ever develop the kind of thinking and language observable in humans. A unique look into the beginnings of human language, this book will be indispensable for students and researchers of language and linguistics, language evolution, cultural studies, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science.

Contact Linguistics - Bilingual Encounters and Grammatical Outcomes (Hardcover): Carol Myers-Scotton Contact Linguistics - Bilingual Encounters and Grammatical Outcomes (Hardcover)
Carol Myers-Scotton
R6,887 R2,980 Discovery Miles 29 800 Save R3,907 (57%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contact Linguistics is a critical investigation of what happens to the grammars of languages when bilingual speakers use both their languages in the same clause. It consolidates earlier insights and presents the new theoretical and empirical work of a scholar whose ideas have had a fundamental impact on the field. It also shows that bilingual data offer a revealing window on the structure of the language faculty. Carol Myers-Scotton examines the nature of major contact phenomena, especially lexical borrowing, grammatical convergence, codeswitching, first language attrition, mixed languages, and the development of creoles. She argues forcefully that types of contact phenomena often seen as separate in fact result from the same processes and can be explained by the same principles. Her discussion centers around two new models derived from the Matrix Language Frame model, previously applied only to codeswitching. One model recognizes four types of morphemes based on their different patterns of distribution across contact phenomena; its key hyothesis is that distribution depends on differential access to the morphemes in the production process. The other analyzes three levels of abstract lexical structure whose splitting and recombination across languages in bilingual speech explains many contact outcomes. This is an important volume, of unusual relevance for theories of competence and performance and vital for all those concerned with language contact. Carol Myers-Scotton is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the University of South Carolina. She is a specialist in language contact phenomena and sociolinguistics and has a special interest in East and Southern African linguistics. In 1993, she published two volumes on codeswitching, Social Motivations for Codeswitching: Evidence from Africa, and Duelling Languages: Grammatical Structure in Codeswitching (both OUP). She has also edited a volume of essays on language and literature (OUP 1998) and published many articles in her areas of interest.

Primatology, Ethics and Trauma - The Oklahoma Chimpanzee Studies (Hardcover): Robert Ingersoll, Antonina Anna Scarna Primatology, Ethics and Trauma - The Oklahoma Chimpanzee Studies (Hardcover)
Robert Ingersoll, Antonina Anna Scarna
R2,807 Discovery Miles 28 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Primatology, Ethics and Trauma offers an analytical re-examination of the research conducted into the linguistic abilities of the Oklahoma chimpanzees, uncovering the historical reality of the research. It has been 50 years since the first language experiments on chimpanzees. Robert Ingersoll was one of the researchers from 1975 to 1983. He is well known for being one of the main carers and best friend of the chimpanzee, Nim Chimpsky, but there were other chimpanzees in the University of Oklahoma's Institute for Primate Studies, including Washoe, Moja, Kelly, Booee, and Onan, who were taught sign language in the quest to discover whether language is learned or innate in humans. Antonina Anna Scarna's expertise in language acquisition and neuroscience offers a vehicle for critical evaluation of those studies. Ingersoll and Scarna investigate how this research failed to address the emotional needs of the animals. Research into trauma has made scientific advances since those studies. It is time to consider the research from a different perspective, examining the neglect and cruelty that was inflicted on those animals in the name of psychological science. This book re-examines those cases, addressing directly the suffering and traumatic experiences endured by the captive chimpanzees, in particular the female chimpanzee, Washoe, and her resultant inability to be a competent mother. The book discusses the unethical nature of the studies in the context of recent research on trauma and offers a specific and direct psychological message, proposing to finally close the door on the language side of these chimpanzee studies. This book is a novel and groundbreaking account. It will be of interest to lay readers and academics alike. Those working as research, experimental, and clinical psychologists will find this book of interest, as will psychotherapists, linguists, anthropologists, historians of science and primatologists, as well as those involved in primate sanctuary and conservation.

The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning - The Tornado Effect (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Carol Griffiths The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning - The Tornado Effect (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Carol Griffiths
R3,342 Discovery Miles 33 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses fundamental questions regarding the relationships between successful language learning and strategy use and development, according to learner, situational or target variables. It considers strategy effectiveness from an individual point of view and discusses pedagogical issues, especially relating to teacher perceptions and training, classroom and learner factors, methodology and content. This new edition has been reworked and revised to include an extensive review, analysis and re-interpretation of the existing literature and an update on the theoretical debate surrounding language learning strategies. The research methodology section has been considerably extended and detailed explanations are now given for how to analyse data from research studies. Rather than focusing on strategies divorced from the 'real world' of the classroom, this book explores the issues from the teaching/learning point of view and will be of interest to students, teachers, trainee teachers, teacher educators and researchers alike.

Linguistics and Psychoanalysis - A New Perspective on Language Processing and Evolution (Hardcover): Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Linguistics and Psychoanalysis - A New Perspective on Language Processing and Evolution (Hardcover)
Thomas Paul Bonfiglio
R4,012 Discovery Miles 40 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This ground-breaking, provocative book presents an overview of research at the disciplinary intersection of psychoanalysis and linguistics. Understanding that linguistic activity, to a great extent, takes place in unconscious cognition, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio systematically demonstrates how fundamental psychoanalytic mechanisms-such as displacement, condensation, overdetermination, and repetition-have been absent in the history of linguistic inquiry, and explains how these mechanisms can illuminate the understanding of the grammatical structure, evolution, acquisition, and processing of language. Re-examining popular misunderstandings of psychoanalysis along the way, Bonfiglio further proposes a new theoretical configuration of language and expertly sets the future agenda on this subject with new conceptual paradigms for research and teaching. This will be an invaluable, fascinating resource for advanced students and scholars of theoretical and applied linguistics, the cognitive-behavioral sciences, metaphor studies, humor studies and play theory, anthropology, and beyond.
