Throughout history, arsenic has been used as an effective and
lethal poison. Today, arsenic continues to present a real threat to
human health all over the world, as it contaminates groundwater and
food supplies. Handbook of Arsenic Toxicology presents the latest
findings on arsenic, its chemistry, its sources and its acute and
chronic effects on the environment and human health. The book takes
readings systematically through the target organs, before detailing
current preventative and counter measures. This reference enables
readers to effectively assess the risks related to arsenic, and
provide a comprehensive look at arsenic exposure, toxicity and
toxicity prevention.

Stress in the DSM is referred to only in the sense of post
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, some research studies
estimate up to two thirds of illnesses seen by general
practitioners are 'stress related'-GI problems, sleep disturbance,
mental concentration, headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, high
blood pressure, dermatitis, illnesses from lowered immune system,
and vague aches and pains - all can be symptoms and outcomes of the
elusive stress factor. This issue of Psychiatric Clinics of North
America discusses the scientific medical facets of stress, written
by mental health and medical practitioners. It looks at the
brain-body connection of stress - what the body does to result in
stress and varying results stress has on the body. This fascinating
cross-discipline look at stress is intended for psychiatrists,
general practitioners, cardiologists, GI specialists, neurologists,
sleep medicine specialists, respiratory specialists, and others who
diagnose and treat patients with stress suspected as part of the
illness equation or with self-reported stress. Topics include:
Measurement of stress; Anxiety and stress-how they work together;
Relationship between genetics and stress; Role of glia in stress;
Sleep and stress; Diet and stress; Supplements and stress; Effect
of severe stress on early brain development, attachment, and
emotions; Role of stress and fear on the development of
psychopathology; Expressions of stress in psychiatric illness;
Dermatologic manifestations of stress in normal and psychiatric
populations; Humor and the psychological buffers of stress; Stress
expression in children and adolescents; Stress in service members;
Stress in the geriatric population.
As late as the 1980s, breast cancer was a stigmatized disease, so
much so that local reporters avoided using the word "breast" in
their stories and early breast cancer organizations steered clear
of it in their names. But activists with business backgrounds began
to partner with corporations for sponsored runs and cause-marketing
products, from which a portion of the proceeds would benefit breast
cancer research. Branding breast cancer as "pink"-hopeful,
positive, uncontroversial-on the products Americans see every day,
these activists and corporations generated a pervasive
understanding of breast cancer that is widely shared by the public
and embraced by policymakers. Clearly, they have been successful:
today, more Americans know that the pink ribbon is the symbol of
breast cancer than know the name of the vice president. Hiding
Politics in Plain Sight examines the costs of employing market
mechanisms-especially cause marketing-as a strategy for change.
Patricia Strach suggests that market mechanisms do more than raise
awareness of issues or money to support charities: they also affect
politics. She shows that market mechanisms, like
corporate-sponsored walks or cause-marketing, shift issue
definition away from the contentious processes in the political
sphere to the market, where advertising campaigns portray complex
issues along a single dimension with a simple solution: breast
cancer research will find a cure and Americans can participate
easily by purchasing specially-marked products. This market
competition privileges even more specialized actors with
connections to business. As well, cooperative market activism
fundamentally alters the public sphere by importing processes,
values, and biases of market-based action into politics. Market
activism does not just bring social concerns into market
transactions, it also brings market biases into public
policymaking, which is inherently undemocratic. As a result,
industry and key activists work cooperatively rather than
contentiously, and they define issues as consensual rather than
controversial, essentially hiding politics in plain sight.

Complications.
The increase of immigrant population in developed countries (mainly
in Europe and North America) together with an important increase of
international travel worldwide are the two most important causes
that have contributed to the introduction and diagnosis of
imported/tropical infectious diseases in these countries. These
factors have had an important impact in developed countries in both
social and economic aspects. Imported Infectious Diseases focuses
not only on describing the infections, but also in evaluating the
current epidemiology, the economic and social impact and the
possibility to apply immunization measures and vaccines. The main
purpose of this book is to give an overview of the current most
important and frequent imported infectious diseases in developed
countries. The first chapter informs about the medical services
that are being offered to the immigrants in the main developed
countries depending on the legal situation. Following chapters
describe the main surveillance systems for these kinds of diseases,
mainly in Europe and North America. Finally, remaining chapters
contain sections on epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features,
diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Hospice care is one of the fastest-growing segments of the U. S.
healthcare system, a trend that is expected to accelerate as the
median age of the population continues to rise over the next three
decades. Despite over forty percent of the population now dying
while on hospice care, very little has been published on the
ethical opportunities and challenges experienced in the everyday
lives of those giving and receiving hospice care. This book is the
first comprehensive collection devoted to analyzing distinctive
ethical issues arising in the delivery of hospice care and designed
to promote best ethical practices for hospice care professionals
and organizations. Thirteen newly commissioned chapters by
seventeen hospice experts populate three thematic sections of the
book, each devoted to an aspect of the intersection between ethics
and hospice care. Contributors have unique qualifications and
abilities to articulate and respond to ethically significant
phenomena that - while not always unique to hospice care - arise in
especially poignant and complex ways when caring for patients
enrolled in hospice. As the shift or return to home-based care at
the end of life continues, hospice professionals and programs will
be faced with a broader array of terminal illnesses, cultural
beliefs and traditions, and patient and family values than ever
before. Hospice will no longer be tailored solely to the final
stage of cancer, but will need to accommodate patients whose
illnesses are variable in their progression and whose treatment
plans include many medical options. The ethical orientations and
frameworks that have served hospice for the past 50 years will need
to be supplemented and refined if hospice is to fulfill this
changing social mission. Hospice Ethics explores a new paradigm for
hospice ethics from a multi-disciplinary and provides an important
educational resource for professional training in end of life care.
Student feedback has appeared in the forefront of higher education
quality, in particular the issues of effectiveness and the use of
student feedback to improve higher education teaching and learning,
and other areas of student tertiary experience. Despite this,
little academic literature has focussed on the experiences of
academics, higher education leaders and managers. The final title
in the Chandos Learning and Teaching Series to focus on student
feedback, Enhancing Learning and Teaching through Student Feedback
in the Medical and Health Sciences expands on topics covered in the
previous publications, focussing on the medical and health science
disciplines. This edited title includes contributions from experts
in higher education quality, and student feedback from a range of
countries, such as Australia, Europe, Canada, the USA, the UK,
South East Asia and India. The book is concerned with the practices
of evaluation and higher education quality in medical and health
science disciplines, with particular focus on student feedback. The
book begins by giving a discipline-specific overview of student
feedback in medical and health sciences, before moving on to take a
global perspective. The penultimate chapter considers the
accountability of student evaluations in health and medical
sciences, before a conclusion summarises the practices of student
feedback and accountability in medical and health sciences, and
suggests future improvements.

Disasters are confronting communities across the globe on a scale
and intensity not previously witnessed. Following devastating
earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand, Haiti, China, Indonesia and
Pakistan, hurricanes in the Philippines and USA, floods in
Bangladesh, the Balkans and Canada, famine and droughts in Africa
and Australia, and ferocious wildfires in Europe, USA and
Australia, to epidemics, conflicts and terrorism unleashing
indiscriminate suffering across all continents... NO ONE IS
IMMUNE... BUT SOME ARE MORE VULNERABLE THAN OTHERS. Allied health
workers, including occupational therapists, are seeking ways to
engage in a meaningful way...as professionals...individuals...and
global citizens. Disaster and Development is a ground breaking book
that crosses cultures and contexts to provide a foundation for
critical reflection on the role of occupation in disaster and
development. Drawing upon the experiences of survivors, and of
practitioners, personnel from local and international
organizations, researchers and academics, an occupational
perspective is illuminated with implications for policy, practice
and education. ENDORSEMENTS: WFOT - World Federation of
Occupational Therapists "Timely, accessible, and reflecting the

Knowledge of cutaneous lymphomas has been growing significantly as
a result of important discoveries in immunology, molecular biology,
and immunohistochemistry. Improved clinical pathologic correlation
and follow-up data, as well as the synergistic collaboration among
different lymphoma registries and specialists from several academic
medical centers have greatly contributed to the understanding of
the difficult field of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders.
While these advances have increased understanding of skin
lymphomas, they have also produced an extensive and sometimes
confusing litany of articles, studies, and classification schemes.
This issue on Cutaneous Lymphomas in Surgical Pathology Clinics
provides an organized and updated review of this challenging topic
by leading experts. It bridges critical knowledge gaps in the
diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas. Sezary Syndrome, Mycosis
Fungoides and variants are presented along with B-cell, CD30,
lymphoproliferative disorders among others. In addition to multiple
clinical and microscopic images, tables and algorithms are
presented to aid in diagnosis and staging. Beyond its usefulness to
general pathologists, dermatopathologists, and hematopathologists,
this information is intended to be helpful for dermatologists,
hematologists/oncologists, fellows, and residents.
