Alain Haurie, Shigeo Muto, Leon A. Petrosjan, T.E.S. Raghavan
R2,889 Discovery Miles 28 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The paradigms of dynamic games play an important role in the development of multi-agent models in engineering, economics, and management science. The applicability of their concepts stems from the ability to encompass situations with uncertainty, incomplete information, fluctuating coalition structure, and coupled constraints imposed on the strategies of all the players. This book - an outgrowth of the 10th International Symposium on Dynamic Games - presents current developments of the theory of dynamic games and its applications to various domains, in particular energy-environment economics and management sciences. The volume uses dynamic game models of various sorts to approach and solve several problems pertaining to pursuit-evasion, marketing, finance, climate and environmental economics, resource exploitation, as well as auditing and tax evasions. In addition, it includes some chapters on cooperative games, which are increasingly drawing dynamic approaches to their classical solutions. dynamic game theory and its applications for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering, economics, as well as environmental and management sciences.

Z. Yang
R2,649 Discovery Miles 26 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Herbert Scarf is a highly esteemed distinguished American economist. He is internationally famous for his early epoch-making work on optimal inventory policies and his highly influential study with Andrew Clark on optimal policies for a multi-echelon inventory problem, which initiated the important and flourishing field of supply chain management. Equally, he has gained world recognition for his classic study on the stability of the Walrasian price adjustment processes and his fundamental analysis on the relationship between the core and the set of competitive equilibria (the so-called Edgeworth conjecture). Further achievements include his remarkable sufficient condition for the existence of a core in non-transferable utility games and general exchange economies, his seminal paper with Lloyd Shapley on housing markets, and his pioneering study on increasing returns and models of production in the presence of indivisibilities. All in all, however, the name of Scarf is always remembered as a synonym for the computation of economic equilibria and fixed points. In the early 1960s he invented a path-breaking technique for computing equilibrium prices. This work has generated a major research field in economics termed Applied General Equilibrium Analysis and a corresponding area in operations research known as Simplicial Fixed Point Methods. This book comprises all his research articles and consists of four volumes. The volume collects Herbert Scarf's papers in the area of Applied Equilibrium Analysis.

An Introduction to Polynomial and Semi-Algebraic Optimization (Hardcover): Jean-Bernard Lasserre An Introduction to Polynomial and Semi-Algebraic Optimization (Hardcover)
Jean-Bernard Lasserre
R3,745 Discovery Miles 37 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first comprehensive introduction to the powerful moment approach for solving global optimization problems (and some related problems) described by polynomials (and even semi-algebraic functions). In particular, the author explains how to use relatively recent results from real algebraic geometry to provide a systematic numerical scheme for computing the optimal value and global minimizers. Indeed, among other things, powerful positivity certificates from real algebraic geometry allow one to define an appropriate hierarchy of semidefinite (SOS) relaxations or LP relaxations whose optimal values converge to the global minimum. Several extensions to related optimization problems are also described. Graduate students, engineers and researchers entering the field can use this book to understand, experiment with and master this new approach through the simple worked examples provided.

Convexity and Optimization in Banach Spaces (Hardcover, 4th ed. 2012): Viorel Barbu, Teodor Precupanu Convexity and Optimization in Banach Spaces (Hardcover, 4th ed. 2012)
Viorel Barbu, Teodor Precupanu
R3,383 Discovery Miles 33 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An updated and revised edition of the 1986 title Convexity and Optimization in Banach Spaces, this book provides a self-contained presentation of basic results of the theory of convex sets and functions in infinite-dimensional spaces. The main emphasis is on applications to convex optimization and convex optimal control problems in Banach spaces. A distinctive feature is a strong emphasis on the connection between theory and application. This edition has been updated to include new results pertaining to advanced concepts of subdifferential for convex functions and new duality results in convex programming. The last chapter, concerned with convex control problems, has been rewritten and completed with new research concerning boundary control systems, the dynamic programming equations in optimal control theory and periodic optimal control problems. Finally, the structure of the book has been modified to highlight the most recent progression in the field including fundamental results on the theory of infinite-dimensional convex analysis and includes helpful bibliographical notes at the end of each chapter.

Nonlinear Algebra In An Acorn: With Applications To Deep Learning (Hardcover): Martin J Lee, Ken Kang Too Tsang Nonlinear Algebra In An Acorn: With Applications To Deep Learning (Hardcover)
Martin J Lee, Ken Kang Too Tsang
R1,203 Discovery Miles 12 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A simple algorithm for solving a set of nonlinear equations by matrix algebra has been discovered recently - first by transforming them into an equivalent matrix equation and then finding the solution analytically in terms of the inverse matrix of this equation. With this newly developed ACORN (Adaptive Constrained Optimal Robust Nonlinear) algorithm, it is possible to minimize the objective function [constructed from the functions in the nonlinear set of equations] without computing its derivatives. This book will present the details of ACORN algorithm and how it is used to solve large scale nonlinear equations with an innovative approach ACORN Magic [minimization algorithms gathered in a cloud].The ultimate motivation of this work is its application to optimization. In recent years, with the advances in big-data, optimization becomes an even more powerful tool in knowledge discovery. ACORN Magic is the perfect choice in this kind of application because of that fact that it is fast, robust and simple enough to be embedded in any type of machine learning program.

Jiongmin Yong
R1,945 Discovery Miles 19 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Mathematically, most of the interesting optimization problems can be formulated to optimize some objective function, subject to some equality and/or inequality constraints. This book introduces some classical and basic results of optimization theory, including nonlinear programming with Lagrange multiplier method, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker method, Fritz John's method, problems with convex or quasi-convex constraints, and linear programming with geometric method and simplex method.A slim book such as this which touches on major aspects of optimization theory will be very much needed for most readers. We present nonlinear programming, convex programming, and linear programming in a self-contained manner. This book is for a one-semester course for upper level undergraduate students or first/second year graduate students. It should also be useful for researchers working on many interdisciplinary areas other than optimization.

Algorithmic Governance - Politics and Law in the Post-Human Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Ignas Kalpokas Algorithmic Governance - Politics and Law in the Post-Human Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Ignas Kalpokas
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyses the changes to the regulation of everyday life that have taken place as a result of datafication, the ever-growing analytical, predictive, and structuring role of algorithms, and the prominence of the platform economy. This new form of regulation - algorithmic governance - ranges from nudging individuals towards predefined outcomes to outright structuration of behaviour through digital architecture. The author reveals the strength and pervasiveness of algorithmic politics through a comparison with the main traditional form of regulation: law. These changes are subsequently demonstrated to reflect a broader shift away from anthropocentric accounts of the world. In doing so, the book adopts a posthumanist framework which focuses on deep embeddedness and interactions between humans, the natural environment, technology, and code.

The connected dominating set has been a classic subject studied in graph theory since 1975. Since the 1990s, it has been found to have important applications in communication networks, especially in wireless networks, as a virtual backbone. Motivated from those applications, many papers have been published in the literature during last 15 years. Now, the connected dominating set has become a hot research topic in computer science. In this book, we are going to collect recent developments on the connected dominating set, which presents the state of the art in the study of connected dominating sets. The book consists of 16 chapters. Except the 1st one, each chapter is devoted to one problem, and consists of three parts, motivation and overview, problem complexity analysis, and approximation algorithm designs, which will lead the reader to see clearly about the background, formulation, existing important research results, and open problems. Therefore, this would be a very valuable reference book for researchers in computer science and operations research, especially in areas of theoretical computer science, computer communication networks, combinatorial optimization, and discrete mathematics.

Geometric Flows on Planar Lattices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Andrea Braides, Margherita Solci Geometric Flows on Planar Lattices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Andrea Braides, Margherita Solci
R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book introduces the reader to important concepts in modern applied analysis, such as homogenization, gradient flows on metric spaces, geometric evolution, Gamma-convergence tools, applications of geometric measure theory, properties of interfacial energies, etc. This is done by tackling a prototypical problem of interfacial evolution in heterogeneous media, where these concepts are introduced and elaborated in a natural and constructive way. At the same time, the analysis introduces open issues of a general and fundamental nature, at the core of important applications. The focus on two-dimensional lattices as a prototype of heterogeneous media allows visual descriptions of concepts and methods through a large amount of illustrations.
