Orthodontics in Clinical Practice (Hardcover): Massimo Rossi Orthodontics in Clinical Practice (Hardcover)
Massimo Rossi
R4,313 Discovery Miles 43 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

KEY POINTS Full colour throughout Over 1000 illustrations Combines the latest theories with modern practice All images also viewable on the Anshan web site - www.anshan.co.uk In his book Orthodontics in Clinical Practice, Massimo Rossi sets out a connection between the research field and the daily work of an orthodontist. Scientific data must be applied to individuals according to their own psychology and personality. Therefore a good orthodontist must choose, among various solutions, the best approach for his patient, always respecting the principle of informed consent. Modern orthodontics concerns not only young people but elderly patients as well. If the goal of dental treatment is the achievement of finding the optimum combination of function and aesthetics, then in many cases that cannot be done using prosthesis, implantology, and periodontology alone. By playing a fundamental role in the various interdisciplinary treatments of tooth care, orthodontics changes the concept of modern dentistry. This book provides a bridge between academic theory and clinical practice, encouraging connectivity and cooperation between the proponents of dental and surgical theory, and the orthodontic practitioners who carry out the treatments. It consists of 8 chapters, in which differing levels of treatment are described, the relationship between orthodontics and other fields of dentistry and medicine are explained, and orthognathic surgery is introduced, along with four case studies. Professor Rossi has over 30 years experience as both teacher and clinical orthodontist, with his own private practice. This book draws upon his vast experience of orthodontics, having seen and carried out the advancement of dental treatment in recent years. Originally in italian, Orthodontics in Clinical Practice is now published for the first time in English, to be made available to academics and practitioners worldwide.

Tristan Barrett, Nadeem Shaida, Owen Thomas, Ashley Shaw
R1,283 Discovery Miles 12 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In September 2009, the format of the written Radiology FRCR Part 2A examinations changed. The previous negatively-marked true-false MCQs have become obsolete, replaced by 'single best answer' (SBA)questions, with candidates selecting 1 of 5 options, without negative marking. The author team have themselves recently successfully sat the FRCR exam, and have prior experience in the SBA format, making them ideally suited to write such a book, and have produced an excellent revision guide for the new format exam. There are 750 stem questions covering all 6 modules, including a separate section with a 75 questions-per-module 'mock' examination which readers can use to test themselves against the clock, under examination conditions, to hone their technique. The questions have been extensively researched and cross-checked, with relevant topics being drawn from major radiology textbooks, as well as current radiological journals such as Clinical Radiology and Radiographics. Answers are given with detailed explanations and references are provided, which can also be used for further reading as appropriate. As a bonus the authors pass on their own proven exam tips and techniques. Key Points - Authors recently sat exams themselves - Over 700 questions

Part D discusses mainly clinical pharmacy, pharmacotherapy, important disorders of organ system and their management, therapeutic drug monitoring and concept of essential drugs and rational drug use.To provide a realistic approach to the understanding of the subject, each chapter commences with a crisp introduction followed by classification, treatment of each class of drugs with reference to important 'drugs' vis-a-vis pharmacological actions, pharmacokinetic actions, mechanism of action, therapeutic uses, dosage regimens, adverse drug reactions, drug interaction, etc. The text is profusely illustrated with labelled diagrams, graphics and lucid explanations. It provides the reader an explicit route starting from the molecular understanding of receptors and drug activities to the therapeutic applications of the most important class of drugs.

Radiological Anatomy for the FRCR Part 1 (Paperback): Vimal Raj, Tristan Barrett Radiological Anatomy for the FRCR Part 1 (Paperback)
Vimal Raj, Tristan Barrett
R922 Discovery Miles 9 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The FRCR examination was recently changed and now comprises two modules: physics and radiological anatomy. The anatomy module is new, and consists of 20 radiological images, with 5 questions on each image, 100 questions in all. The anatomy examination lasts for 75 minutes and incorporates 20 separate images (cases) with 5 questions per case, producing a total of 100 questions. The cases will be presented at computer work-stations, with separate written answer sheets for completion. In this book we present 5 complete `mock' anatomy examinations, with a total of 500 questions. We have stayed true to the lay out of the RCR sample questions and answer sheets to ensure familiarity. The anatomical structures should not be ambiguous and, if necessary, there will be more than one arrow to indicate the appropriate structure (a concept that has been included in some of the example questions in this book). As a rule, the candidate should make an attempt to answer ALL questions in the exam as there is no negative marking. It is advised that answers be as complete as possible, for instance the use of `left' or `right' if this can be derived from the image, or rather than simply stating `acromion', use the `acromion process of the scapula' - if you have the knowledge, use it! This book should not be used as a primary revision tool, rather a practice aid to test the candidate against the clock in exam conditions and highlight any areas of weakness or imaging examinations that the candidate may be unfamiliar with. Primary revision is suggested by using traditional anatomy alongside radiology-based anatomy textbooks. It is also necessary to experience everyday radiological investigations, and even more specialist investigations, as essentially any type of radiological image can be used for assessment of anatomical knowledge in this examination. The authors provide explanatory answers, and have also included extra images to accompany their explanations. In addition there are references to key revision resources, and they have also given advice on exam technique. They have first hand experience of running courses on the new format FRCR anatomy exam, and are therefore the perfect authors for the subject. Key Points 100% relevant to the new format Authors run FRCR Part 1 courses 500 questions

My Friend Anne Frank (Paperback): Hannah Pick-Goslar My Friend Anne Frank (Paperback)
Hannah Pick-Goslar
R476 Discovery Miles 4 760 In Stock

In this never-before-seen memoir, Bergen-Belsen survivor Hannah Pick-Goslar shares incredibly powerful words on the final untold portrait of her childhood friend, Anne Frank. The inspiring and heartbreaking true story of two best friends torn apart and reunited against all odds.

When Hannah Pick-Goslar's family fled Nazi Germany for Amsterdam, she struck up a close friendship with her next-door neighbour; precocious, outspoken and fun-loving Anne Frank. Hannah instantly warmed to happy-go-lucky Anne and for seven blissful years, the inseparable pair navigated school, boys and coming of age in Amsterdam's Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood. But in 1942, life quickly changed for the thirteen-year-old girls.

The Nazi occupation of Amsterdam meant the friends were separated without warning. Hannah called on Anne, but there was no trace of her friend or her precious diary. Hannah was tormented over the fate of Anne, wondering if, by some stroke of fortune she had escaped danger and was alive and well elsewhere. It wasn't until Hannah reached her darkest point, imprisoned with her family in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, that she had an astonishing chance reunion with Anne. Desperate to save her friend who was weak and struggling to survive, Hannah risked everything to toss packages filled with food and clothes over a barbed-wire fence. Hannah only learned of Anne's death after her liberation, when Otto Frank came to visit her in hospital. From that day, Otto became a second father to Hannah, making sure that she was always looked after.

In this groundbreaking memoir, Hannah Pick-Goslar shares an intimate portrait of Anne Frank, the young Jewish diarist who has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

Shunned - Discrimination against people with mental illness (Hardcover): Graham Thornicroft Shunned - Discrimination against people with mental illness (Hardcover)
Graham Thornicroft
R5,347 Discovery Miles 53 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

People with mental illness commonly describe the stigma and discrimination they face as being worse than their main condition. Discrimination can pervade every part of their daily life - their personal life, working life, sense of citizenship, their ability to maintain even a basic standard of living. Though things have certainly improved in the past 50 years, discrimination against the mentally ill is still a major problem throughout the world. It can manifest itself in subtle ways, such as the terminology used to describe the person or their illness, or in more obvious ways - by the way the mentally ill might be treated and deprived of basic human rights. Should we just accept such discrimination as deeply rooted and resistant to change, or is this something that we can collectively change if we understand and commit ourselves to tackling the problem? Shunned presents clearly for a wide readership information about the nature and severity of discrimination against people with mental illness and what can be done to reduce this. The book features many quotations from people with mental illness showing how this has affected their home, personal, social, and working life. After showing, both from personal accounts and from a thorough review of the literature, the nature of discrimination, the book sets out a clear manifesto for change. Written by a leading figure in mental health in a lively and accessible manner, the book presents a fascinating and humane portrayal of the problem of stigma and discrimination, and shows how we can work to reduce it.

The Beginner's Guide to Sanity - a self-help book for people with psychosis (Paperback): Erica Crompton, Stephen Lawrie The Beginner's Guide to Sanity - a self-help book for people with psychosis (Paperback)
Erica Crompton, Stephen Lawrie
R454 Discovery Miles 4 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Psychosis is possibly the most feared symptom of mental health disorders, other than suicide, as the sufferer loses touch with reality and can be an extreme danger to themselves and occasionally others. It is particularly associated with schizophrenia, but also manic episodes of bipolar disorder, extreme stress and emotional trauma and substance abuse. Erica Crampton, a former psychosis/schizophrenia patient and now mental health activist and writer, and Stephen Lawrie, Professor of Psychiatry in Edinburgh, UK, have come together to write this practical and positive guide to the tools for recovery to help people with psychosis, or at risk of developing psychosis, and their family and friends, lead a happier, more rewarding life. Written in the style of a travel guide, with lifestyle and wellbeing advice to improve outcomes as well as guidance on conventional treatments, each approach is given a `sanity check' regarding its reliability.

Frontiers in Molecular Design and Chemical Information Science - Herman Skolnik Award Symposium 2015 - Jurgen Bajorath... Frontiers in Molecular Design and Chemical Information Science - Herman Skolnik Award Symposium 2015 - Jurgen Bajorath (Hardcover)
Rachelle J. Bienstock, Veerabahu Shanmugasundaram, Jurgen Bajorath
R5,252 Discovery Miles 52 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on broadly defined areas of chemical information science- with special emphasis on chemical informatics- and computer-aided molecular design. The computational and cheminformatics methods discussed, and their application to drug discovery, are essential for sustaining a viable drug development pipeline. It is increasingly challenging to identify new chemical entities and the amount of money and time invested in research to develop a new drug has greatly increased over the past 50 years. The average time to take a drug from clinical testing to approval is currently 7.2 years. Therefore, the need to develop predictive computational techniques to drive research more efficiently to identify compounds and molecules, which have the greatest likelihood of being developed into successful drugs for a target, is of great significance. New methods such as high throughput screening (HTS) and techniques for the computational analysis of hits have contributed to improvements in drug discovery efficiency. The SARMs developed by Jurgen and colleagues have enabled display of SAR data in a more transparent scaffold/functional SAR table. There are many tools and databases available for use in applied drug discovery techniques based on polypharmacology. The cheminformatics approaches and methodologies presented in this volume and at the Skolnik Award Symposium will pave the way for improved efficiency in drug discovery. The lectures and the chapters also reflect the various aspects of scientific enquiry and research interests of the 2015 Herman Skolnik award recipient.

Robert D. Stevens, Nicholas Hart, Margaret S. Herridge
R3,880 Discovery Miles 38 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Surviving critical illness is not always the happy ending we imagine for patients. Many ICU survivors suffer from a range of long-lasting physical and psychological issues such end stage renal disease, congestive heart failure, cognitive impairment, neuromuscular weakness, and depression or anxiety, which affect their overall quality of life and ability to lead productive lives. This lingering burden or 'legacy' of critical illness is now recognized as a major public health issue, with major efforts underway to understand how it can be prevented, mitigated, or treated. The Textbook of Post-ICU Medicine: The Legacy of Critical Care discusses the science of the recovery process and the innovative treatment regimens which are helping ICU survivors regain function as they heal following trauma or disease. Describing the major clinical syndromes affecting ICU survivors, the book delineates established or postulated biological mechanisms of the post-acute recovery process, and discusses strategies for treatment and rehabilitation to promote recovery in the ICU and in the long term. The chapters are written by an interdisciplinary panel of leading clinicians and researchers working in the field. The book serves as a unique reference for general practitioners, internists and nurses caring for long term ICU survivors as well as specialists in intensive care medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.

The Fear of Contamination - Assessment and Treatment (Hardcover): Stanley Rachman The Fear of Contamination - Assessment and Treatment (Hardcover)
Stanley Rachman
R5,136 Discovery Miles 51 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From a leader in the field of psychotherapy, this new book is the first dedicated to the topic of the fear of contamination. The fear of contamination is the driving force behind compulsive washing, the most common manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder. This is one of the most extraordinary of all human fears. It is complex, powerful, probably universal, easily provoked, intense, and difficult to control. Usually the fear is caused by physical contact with a contaminant and spreads rapidly and widely. The book starts by defining the disorder, before considering the various manifestations of this fear, examining both mental contamination and contact contamination, and feelings of disgust. Most significantly, it develops a theory for how this problem can be treated, providing clinical guidelines - based around cognitive behavioural techniques.
