Getting into German - Multidisciplinary Linguistic Approaches (Paperback): John Partridge Getting into German - Multidisciplinary Linguistic Approaches (Paperback)
John Partridge
R1,873 Discovery Miles 18 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume, composed mainly of papers given at the 1999 conferences of the Forum for German Language Studies (FGLS) at Kent and the Conference of University Teachers of German (CUTG) at Keele, is devoted to differential yet synergetic treatments of the German language. It includes corpus-lexicographical, computational, rigorously phonological, historical/dialectal, comparative, semiotic, acquisitional and pedagogical contributions. In all, a variety of approaches from the rigorously 'pure' and formal to the applied, often feeding off each other to focus on various aspects of the German language.

Phonetics Workbook for Students, A - Building a Foundation for Transcription (CD-ROM): Heidi Harbers Phonetics Workbook for Students, A - Building a Foundation for Transcription (CD-ROM)
Heidi Harbers
R2,297 Discovery Miles 22 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Understanding how sounds form-and how sounds combine to create words- is imperative to learning how to transcribe speech phonetically. Taking a "meta" approach, A Phonetics Workbook for Students by Heidi Harbers prepares students to transcribe speech phonetically by helping them become aware of the sounds of English phonology. Following a systematic, learning-friendly organization, chapter's progress from awareness of sounds, to articulatory phonetics and IPA symbols, to transcription. Unlike other workbooks, its exercises are varied and challenging and develop both foundational and critical thinking skills. By teaching students how to develop both an ear and eye for phonetics, the workbook provides a superior foundation from which transcription skills can develop.

The authors here promote the reintroduction of temporality into the description and analysis of spoken interaction. They argue that spoken words are, in fact, temporal objects and that unless linguists consider how they are delivered within the context of time, they will not capture the full meaning of situated language use. Their approach is rigorously empirical, with analyses of English, German, and Italian rhythm, all grounded in sequences of actual talk-in-interaction.

R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Ann Banfield - professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley - is best known for her groundbreaking contributions to narrative theory. Working within the paradigm of generative linguistics, she argued that the language of fiction is characterized by two "unspeakable sentences", i.e., sentences that do not properly occur in the spoken language: the sentence of "pure narration" and the sentence of "represented speech and thought" (style indirect libre or erlebte Rede). More recently, Banfield offered a major reconsideration of the novels of Virginia Woolf and modernism in light of the philosophy of knowledge developed by G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, and appropriated by Roger Fry in his critical analyses of impressionism and post-impressionism. The essays gathered here pay tribute to Banfield by addressing those disciplines and topics most closely related to her work, including: narrative theory and pragmatics, the philosophy of language and knowledge, generative syntax, meter and phonology, and modernism.

Asymmetries in Vowel Harmony - A Representational Account (Hardcover): Harry van der Hulst Asymmetries in Vowel Harmony - A Representational Account (Hardcover)
Harry van der Hulst
R3,627 Discovery Miles 36 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book deals with the phenomenon of vowel harmony, a phonological process whereby all the vowels in a word are required to share a specific phonological property, such as front or back articulation. Vowel harmony occurs in the majority of languages of the world, though only in very few European languages, and has been a central concern in phonological theory for many years. In this volume, Harry van der Hulst puts forward a new theory of vowel harmony, which accounts for the patterns of and exceptions to this phenomenon in the widest range of languages ever considered. The book begins with an overview of the general causes of asymmetries in vowel harmony systems. The two following chapters provide a detailed account of a new theory of vowel harmony based on unary elements and licensing, which is embedded in a general dependency-based theory of phonological structure. In the remaining chapters, this theory is applied to a variety of vowel harmony phenomena from typologically diverse languages, including palatal harmony in languages such as Finnish and Hungarian, labial harmony in Turkic languages, and tongue root systems in Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan, and Tungusic languages. The volume provides a valuable overview of the diversity of vowel harmony in the languages of the world and is essential reading for phonologists of all theoretical persuasions.

Learning and memory processes are basic features of human existence. They allow us to (un)consciously adapt to changes in our social and physical environment in a variety of ways and may have been a precursor for survival in human evolution. Through several reviews and original work the book focuses on three key topics that enhanced our understanding of the topic in the last twenty years: first, the role of real-time auditory feedback in learning, second, the role of motor aspects for learning and memory, and third, representations in memory and the role of sleep on memory consolidation. The Syllable in Speech Production - Perspectives on the Frame Content Theory (Hardcover): Barbara L. Davis, Krisztina Zajdo The Syllable in Speech Production - Perspectives on the Frame Content Theory (Hardcover)
Barbara L. Davis, Krisztina Zajdo
R6,767 Discovery Miles 67 670 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As a testament to the scope of Peter MacNeilage's scholarly work across his 40 year career, contributions to this tribute volume represent a broad spectrum of the seminal issues addressed by phonetic and evolutionary science over a number of years. Approaches to the problems raised by attempting to understand these fundamental topics are illustrated in the broad diversity of paradigms represented in the volume. This diversity in itself is a tribute to the breadth of scholarly questions pursued by MacNeilage across his career. Chapters are arranged around five thematic areas. Two themes, Evolutionary Perspectives on Speech Production and Acquisition of Speech, reflect the major thrust of Peter's scholarly career over the past 25 years. The other themes are reflective of the broad implications of MacNeilage's work for scholars in disparate scientific domains. One of the strengths of this volume is the unitary focus of contributions by scientists from diverse scientific backgrounds in considering the applicability of the Frame Content Theory within their own scholarly perspectives. Thematic strands in the volume include: - Evolutionary Perspectives on Speech Production - Neurobiological Aspects of Speech - Perception / Action Relationships - Acquisition of Speech Production Skill - Modeling and Movement - Alternative Perspectives on the Syllable.

This comprehensive resource profiles the articulation ability of a client, identifies areas in particular need of treatment and provides the material and tools to create tailor-made practice worksheets. The downloadable resources generate word lists according to the linguistic and phonetic criteria defined by the therapist. Words can also be added to the Library by the therapist allowing it to grow over time and to store a large number of words for articulation practice. Tailor-made lists of practice words and sentences, as well as pictures and instructions, can be designed and printed for individual clients or students. There are seven levels of articulation practice in the order of single sounds; consonant-vowel combinations; DDK rates; short words; multisyllabic words; short phrases with the target sound in one word; and longer sentences saturated with the target sound. The work includes an articulation screening test using words not in the Library to indicate the areas of greatest difficulty and to assess the generalisation of articulation skills. This versatile resource can be used with adults or children and will be invaluable to speech language therapists, teachers, and students of phonetics.

Speech Production - Models, Phonetic Processes, and Techniques (Hardcover): Jonathan Harrington, Marija Tabain Speech Production - Models, Phonetic Processes, and Techniques (Hardcover)
Jonathan Harrington, Marija Tabain
R4,504 Discovery Miles 45 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Speech Production: Models, Phonetic Processes andTechniques brings together researchers from many different disciplines - computer science, dentistry, engineering, linguistics, phonetics, physiology, psychology - all with a special interest in how speech is produced. From the initial neural program to the end acoustic signal, it provides an overview of several dominant models in the speech production literature, as well as up-to-date accounts of persistent theoretical issues in the area. A particular focus is on the evaluation of information gleaned from instrumental investigations of the speech production process, including MRI, PET, ultra-sound, video-imaging, EMA, EPG, X-ray, computer simulation - and many others. The research presented in this volume considers questions such as: the feed-back vs. feed-forward control of speech; the acoustic/auditory vs. articulatory/somato-sensory domains of speech planning; the innateness of human speech; the possible architecture of a speech production model; and the realization of prosodic structure in speech. Leaders in speech research from around the world have contributed their most recent work to this volume.

This book is a comprehensive study on the phonetic characteristics of citation tones in Chaoshan Chinese. It presents the tonal patterns of 65 localities in the Chaoshan area under the "multiple-register and four-level" tonal model. Three case studies are conducted to delve into the evolutionary paths of Chaoshan tones. This book not only provides a large-scale typological study on Chaoshan Chinese, but also offers a good example of how to figure out the evolutionary paths of tones from the perspective of variation. The natural alliance of phonetics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and dialect geography is reinforced. It is also suggested in this book that the joint use of these four disciplines is very promising for the study of Chinese.

According to a leading cognitive scientist, we've been teaching reading wrong. The latest science reveals how we can do it right. In 2011, when an international survey reported that students in Shanghai dramatically outperformed American students in reading, math, and science, President Obama declared it a "Sputnik moment": a wake-up call about the dismal state of American education. Little has changed, however, since then: over half of our children still read at a basic level and few become highly proficient. Many American children and adults are not functionally literate, with serious consequences. Poor readers are more likely to drop out of the educational system and as adults are unable to fully participate in the workforce, adequately manage their own health care, or advance their children's education. In Language at the Speed of Sight, internationally renowned cognitive scientist Mark Seidenberg reveals the underexplored science of reading, which spans cognitive science, neurobiology, and linguistics. As Seidenberg shows, the disconnect between science and education is a major factor in America's chronic underachievement. How we teach reading places many children at risk of failure, discriminates against poorer kids, and discourages even those who could have become more successful readers. Children aren't taught basic print skills because educators cling to the disproved theory that good readers guess the words in texts, a strategy that encourages skimming instead of close reading. Interventions for children with reading disabilities are delayed because parents are mistakenly told their kids will catch up if they work harder. Learning to read is more difficult for children who speak a minority dialect in the home, but that is not reflected in classroom practices. By building on science's insights, we can improve how our children read, and take real steps toward solving the inequality that illiteracy breeds. Both an expert look at our relationship with the written word and a rousing call to action, Language at the Speed of Sight is essential for parents, educators, policy makers, and all others who want to understand why so many fail to read, and how to change that.

Phonological Relations Between Words (Hardcover): Laura Benua Phonological Relations Between Words (Hardcover)
Laura Benua
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This work develops a parallelist theory of word formation based on the notion of paradigmatic identity. Words related by morphology may be phonologically similar, beyond what is expected on the basis of their standard constituents, and achieving this similarity can lead to phonotactic violations. The standard generative analysis is that word formation is (sometimes) "cyclic", so the one word functions as an intermediate stage in the derivation of another. This allows phonology derived early to be preserved by a later cycle, producing surface violations of phonotactic constraints. The alternative theory elaborated here is that identity between related words is enforced directly by the grammar. "Cyclic effects" results when paradigmatic identity takes precedence over phonotactic restrictions. It is purposed that morphological derivation is mirrored by a phonological relation between the derived word and its base and that ranked and violable Optimality Theoretic constraints demand identity of these word pairs. Following an elaboration of the theoretical framework, case studies are presented to show how paradigmatic faithfulness can supersede phonotactics and force related words to be identical in featural content or prosodic organization. This study will be of particular interest to linguist working in phonology, morphology, and the interface between the two components.

What is the role of prosody in the generation of sentence structure? A standard notion holds that prosody results from mapping a hierarchical syntactic structure onto a linear sequence of words. A radically different view conceives of certain intonational features as integral components of the syntactic structure. Yet another conception maintains that prosody and syntax are parallel systems that mutually constrain each other to yield surface sentential form. The different viewpoints reflect the various functions prosody may have: On the one hand, prosody is a signal to syntax, marking e.g. constituent boundaries. On the other hand, prosodic or intonational features convey meaning; the concept "intonational morpheme" (as e.g. an exponent of information structural notions like topic or focus) puts prosody and intonation squarely into the syntactic representation. The proposals collected in this book tackle the intricate relationship of syntax and prosody in the encoding of sentences. The contributions build their cases on the basis of solid empirical evidence, adducing data from experiments or from the careful analysis of natural speech. The volume thus represents a state of the art survey of research on the syntax-phonology interface.

The Phonology / Paraphonology Interface and the Sounds of German Across Time (Hardcover, New edition): Irmengard Rauch The Phonology / Paraphonology Interface and the Sounds of German Across Time (Hardcover, New edition)
Irmengard Rauch
R2,282 Discovery Miles 22 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Phonology / Paraphonology Interface and the Sounds of German Across Time is an excursion into the phonology of the German language in the present, the remote prehistoric past (Indo-European and Germanic), and throughout the almost thousand-year historical era. It accordingly addresses all eras pertaining to the study of the German language in its innermost core, namely, its phonology. This book makes accessible to linguists and non-linguists alike the elements of acoustic and articulatory phonetics. It provides the reader with insight into phonological methods from the Prague Structuralism and Chomskyan Generativism of the last seventy-five years to an array of today's non-linear approaches by applying them to given phonological changes that act as leitmotifs in the research of German sounds through time. The dynamic acts that infuse the structure of German phonology, such as ablaut, umlaut, and various other assimilations, diphthongizations, monophthongizations, and consonant shifts, are all woven into the book. In each of the three time frames, the interface with ample paraphonological data allows the reader to experience "flesh and blood" phonology, that is, how it occurs and to what purpose in the mouth / ear of the speaker / listener of the German language. Not least, the reading of a piece of literature, be it a Runic inscription, the Old High German Otfrid, a Middle High German dawn song, the Early New High German Ackermann aus Boehmen, or a Rilke poem, adds delight to the understanding of the sounds that belong to our most vital and prized human possessions.
