Principles of Radical Cv Phonology - A Theory of Segmental and Syllabic Structure (Paperback): Harry van der Hulst Principles of Radical Cv Phonology - A Theory of Segmental and Syllabic Structure (Paperback)
Harry van der Hulst
R857 Discovery Miles 8 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Based on 30 years of research, this book presents a theory about the 'speech sounds' that occur in human spoken and signed languages. Identifying the ultimate elements of which speech sounds consist, Harry van der Hulst proposes a radical theory that recognises only two elements: |C| and |V|. Based on a small set of first principles, the book explains what a possible speech sound is and provides explicit structures for all speech sounds that occur in the world's languages. With numerous examples from hundreds of languages, including Dutch, Czech, Japanese, Kabardian, Hungarian, Korean and Zulu, the book also provides insight into current theories of segmental structure, commonly used feature systems and recurrent controversies.

Syllables In Tashlhiyt Berber And In Moroccan Arabic (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002): F. Dell, M.... Syllables In Tashlhiyt Berber And In Moroccan Arabic (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
F. Dell, M. Elmedlaoui
R4,385 Discovery Miles 43 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is intended primarily as an original contribution to the investi gation of the phonology of the two main languages spoken in Morocco. Its central topic is syllable structure. Our theoretical outlook is that of generative phonology. Most of the book deals with Tashlhiyt Berber. This language has a syllable structure with properties which are highly unusual, as seen from the vantage point of better-studied languages on which most theorizing about syllabification is based. On the one hand, complex consonant sequences are a common occurrence in the surface representations. On the other hand, syllable structure is very simple: only one distinctive feature bundle (phoneme) may occur in the onset, the nucleus or the coda. The way these two conflicting demands are reconciled is by allowing vowelless sylla bies . Any consonant may act as a syllable nucleus. When astring is syllabified, nuclear status is preferentially assigned to the segments with a higher degree of sonority than their neighbours. Consider for instance the expression below, which is a complete sentence meaning 'remove it (m) and eat it (m)': /kks=t t-ss-t=t/ [k. st. s . t:"] . k. k~t. t. s. . slt. The sentence must be pronounced voiceless throughout, as indicated by the IPA transcription between square brackets ; the syllabic parse given after the IPA transcription indicates that the sentence comprises four syllables (syllable nuclei are underlined). The differences between the dialects of Berber have to do primarily with the phonology and the lexicon.

Intelligibility, Oral Communication, and the Teaching of Pronunciation (Hardcover): John M Levis Intelligibility, Oral Communication, and the Teaching of Pronunciation (Hardcover)
John M Levis
R2,974 Discovery Miles 29 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A proper understanding of intelligibility is at the heart of effective pronunciation teaching, and with it, successful teaching of speaking and listening. Far from being an optional 'add-it-on-if-we-have-time' language feature, pronunciation is essential because of its tremendous impact on speech intelligibility. Pronunciation dramatically affects the ability of language learners to make themselves understood and to understand the speech of others. But not all elements of pronunciation are equally important. Some affect intelligibility a great deal, while others do not. With a strong emphasis on classroom practice and how pronunciation teaching can be more effectively approached in different teaching contexts, this book provides an important resource for pronunciation researchers, with a distinctly practical focus. It shows how intelligibility research informs pronunciation teaching within communicative classrooms, enabling language teachers to incorporate intelligibility findings into their teaching. Professionals interested in oral communication, pronunciation, and speech perception will find the book fascinating.

Laboratory Phonology 7 (Paperback, Reprint 2013): Carlos Gussenhoven, Natasha Warner Laboratory Phonology 7 (Paperback, Reprint 2013)
Carlos Gussenhoven, Natasha Warner
R1,084 R945 Discovery Miles 9 450 Save R139 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of recent papers in Laboratory Phonology approaches phonological theory from several different empirical directions. Psycholinguistic research into the perception and production of speech has produced results that challenge current conceptions about phonological structure. Field work studies provide fresh insights into the structure of phonological features, and the phonology-phonetics interface is investigated in phonetic research involving both segments and prosody, while the role of underspecification is put to the test in automatic speech recognition.

The Syllable in Optimality Theory (Hardcover): Caroline Fery, Ruben van de Vijver The Syllable in Optimality Theory (Hardcover)
Caroline Fery, Ruben van de Vijver
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides an overview of the role of the syllable in Optimality Theory (OT) and ways in which problems that relate to the analysis of syllable structure can be solved in OT. The contributions to the book show that the syllable not only sheds light on certain properties of OT itself. They also show that OT is capable of describing and adequately analyzing many issues that are problematic in other theories. The analyses are based on a wealth of languages.

Intonation and Stress - Evidence from Hungarian (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002): L. Varga Intonation and Stress - Evidence from Hungarian (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002)
L. Varga
R2,847 Discovery Miles 28 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first comprehensive account of Hungarian stress and intonation to appear in English. The emphasis is on description, but a large number of theoretical issues are also dealt with in an original way. Hungarian is a Uralic or Finno-Ugric language spoken by over thirteen million people in Central Europe. The study of its stress and intonation will be of special interest to intonationists, phonologists, Hungarian language specialists, and their students at intermediate level and above.

Intonation - Analysis, Modelling and Technology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): A. Botinis Intonation - Analysis, Modelling and Technology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
A. Botinis
R4,507 Discovery Miles 45 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

ANTONIS BOTINIS 1. 1 Background This introduction provides essential information about the structure and the objects of study of this volume. Following the introduction, fourteen papers which represent current research on intonation are organised into five thematic sections: (I) Overview of Intonation, (II) Prominence and Focus, (III) Boundaries and Discourse, (IV) Intonation Modelling, and (V) Intonation Technology. Within the sections the papers are arranged thematically, although several papers which deal with various aspects of intonation and prosody are basically intersectional. As the title indicates, "Intonation: Analysis, Modelling and Technology" is a contribution to the study of prosody, with major emphasis on intonation. Intonation and tonal themes are thus the central object of the volume, although temporal and dynamic aspects are also taken into consideration by a good number of papers. Although tonal and prosodic distinctions have been dealt with throughout man's literate history with reference to the study of language, for example by classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, it is in recent decades that we have witnessed the most fertile growth in intonation studies, as with experimental phonetics and speech technology in general. As Rossi (this volume) points out, intonation research really began to blossom in the sixties with a multi fold increase in prosodic studies, reflected in contributions to the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS), and in the international literature."

Phonetics For Dummies (Paperback): William F. Katz Phonetics For Dummies (Paperback)
William F. Katz
R548 Discovery Miles 5 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The clear and easy way to get a handle on the science of speech

The science of how people produce and perceive speech, phonetics has an array of real-world applications, from helping engineers create an authentic sounding Irish or Canadian accent for a GPS voice, to assisting forensics investigators identifying the person whose voice was caught on tape, to helping a film actor make the transition to the stage. Phonetics is a required course among students of speech pathology and linguistics, and it's a popular elective among students of telecommunications and forensics. The first popular guide to this fascinating discipline, "Phonetics For Dummies" is an excellent overview of the field for students enrolled in introductory phonetics courses and an ideal introduction for anyone with an interest in the field.

Segmental Phonology in Optimality Theory - Constraints and Representations (Hardcover): Linda Lombardi Segmental Phonology in Optimality Theory - Constraints and Representations (Hardcover)
Linda Lombardi
R3,112 Discovery Miles 31 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It was not clear from early work in optimality theory how the theory could attack the rich range of phenomena now found in segmental alterations. However, there is now a body of work that concentrates on working out the details of featural phonology with OT, demonstrating that the theory allows superior explanations of the typological possibilities and the underlying motivations for these phenomena. This volume brings together current work by some of the influential researchers in this area, ranging from the authors of recent influential dissertations to prominent senior faculty.

Papers in Laboratory Phonology V - Acquisition and the Lexicon (Hardcover): Michael B. Broe, Janet B. Pierrehumbert Papers in Laboratory Phonology V - Acquisition and the Lexicon (Hardcover)
Michael B. Broe, Janet B. Pierrehumbert
R3,417 Discovery Miles 34 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The traditional focus of the Papers in Laboratory Phonology series has been on the relationship of phonology to phonetics. The present volume expands this domain in setting two new themes: language acquisition and lexical representation. Contributors tackle the central problem of what constitutes a possible word in generative phonology, employing contemporary approaches such as Optimality Theory, connectionism, and stochastic grammars. Several papers integrate the issues of lexical representation and language acquisition by undertaking to explain the organization of the adult phonological system as the end product of the acquisition process. Others explore the role of sequential frequency in the lexicon and the development of fine temporal control in production in the emergence of phonological segments and features. Papers in Laboratory Phonology V: Acquisition and the Lexicon will thus be of interest to a wide range of researchers in phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, cognitive science, and the study of speech and communication disorders.

Hacking Cyberspace (Paperback): David J. Gunkel Hacking Cyberspace (Paperback)
David J. Gunkel
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In "Hacking Cyberspace" David J. Gunkel examines the metaphors applied to new technologies, and how those metaphors inform, shape, and drive the implementation of the technology in question. The author explores the metaphorical tropes that have been employed to describe and evaluate recent advances in computer technology, telecommunications systems, and interactive media. Taking the stance that no speech is value-neutral, Gunkel examines such metaphors as "the information superhighway" and "the electronic frontier" for their political and social content, and he develops a critical investigation that not only traces the metaphors' conceptual history, but explicates their implications and consequences for technological development. Through "Hacking Cyberspace," David J. Gunkel develops a sophisticated understanding of new technology that takes into account the effect of technoculture's own discursive techniques and maneuvers on the actual form of technological development.

Coarticulation means the overlapping gestures that occur during the pronunciation of any sequence of speech sounds. This topic in the science of phonetics provides a challenge to speech production theory as well as to various projects in the field of speech technology, including that of building a natural sounding speech synthesizer. The eighteen chapters in this book cover the experimental techniques used for investigating the phenomenon, the experimental findings to date, and the theoretical background.

Zur Sprachlautkonstituierung im phonetischen Wahrnehmungsprozess - Psycho- und elektrophysiologische Untersuchungen (German,... Zur Sprachlautkonstituierung im phonetischen Wahrnehmungsprozess - Psycho- und elektrophysiologische Untersuchungen (German, Hardcover, Reprint 2011)
Hans Georg Piroth
R4,809 Discovery Miles 48 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Phonology of Dutch (Paperback, New edition): Geert Booij The Phonology of Dutch (Paperback, New edition)
Geert Booij
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this, the first comprehensive survey of the phonological system of Dutch, Geert Booij lays particular stress on the relation between morphology, syntax, and prosodic structure at both word- and sentence-level. His primary aim is to provide an overview of the system as a whole, based in part on a number of more detailed studies of particular aspects of Dutch phonology. As a reference work, the book directs the reader to the available literature. The book is not primarily intended as a contribution to phonological theory; however, it is couched in terms of present-day non-linear generative phonology, and the author's analyses are relevant for a number of current issues in phonological theory such as the principles of syllable structure, the interaction of phonology and morphology, underspecification, rule typology, the domain specification of phonological rules, cliticization, and the role of rhythm in word stress.

Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy - The Meaning of Democratic Education in Unsettling Times (Paperback, New ed): Dennis Carlson Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy - The Meaning of Democratic Education in Unsettling Times (Paperback, New ed)
Dennis Carlson
R1,785 Discovery Miles 17 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The essays in this volume explore the educational implications of unsettling shifts in contemporary culture associated with postmodernism. These shifts include the fragmentation of established power blocs, the emergence of a politics of identity, growing inequalities between the haves and the have-nots in a new global economy, and the rise in influence of popular culture in defining who we are. In the academy, postmodernism has been associated with the emergence of new theoretical perspectives that are unsettling the way we think about education. These shifts, the authors suggest, are deeply contradictory and may lead in divergent political directions--some of them quite dangerous. "Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy" examines these issues with regard to four broad domains of educational inquiry: state educational policy and curriculum reform, student identity formation, the curriculum as a text, and critical pedagogy. The book contributes to the dialogue on the forging of a new commonsense discourse on democratic educational renewal, attuned to the changing times in which we live.

Rhythmus und Kontrast im Turkischdeutschen (German, Hardcover): Friederike Kern Rhythmus und Kontrast im Turkischdeutschen (German, Hardcover)
Friederike Kern
R4,604 Discovery Miles 46 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This study draws on the theory and methodology of interactional linguistics to examine the effects of multilingualism on the syntax and prosody of young Germans of Turkish extraction in everyday conversation. The study concludes that prosodic categories such as rhythm and intonation are influential substrate elements. Yet the influence of Turkish is not one of mere transfer. New, rule-based forms have arisen that serve as resources for specific tasks in conversation.

Phonology and Phonetic Evidence - Papers in Laboratory Phonology IV (Hardcover): Bruce Connell, Amalia Arvaniti Phonology and Phonetic Evidence - Papers in Laboratory Phonology IV (Hardcover)
Bruce Connell, Amalia Arvaniti
R3,297 Discovery Miles 32 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The work published in Phonology and Phonetic Evidence presents an integrated phonetics-phonology approach in what has become an established field, laboratory phonology. This 1995 volume is divided into three sections. Part I deals with the status and role of features in phonological representations; Part II, on prosody, contains, amongst others, two papers which present for the first time detailed acoustic and perceptual evidence on the rhythm rule; and Part III, on articulatory organisation, includes several papers which from different perspectives test hypotheses derived from articulatory phonology, thereby testifying to the great influence this theory has exerted in recent years. This, the fourth in the series of Papers in Laboratory Phonology, will be welcomed by all those interested in phonetics, phonology and their interface.
