Dimensions of Register Variation - A Cross-Linguistic Comparison (Hardcover, New): Douglas Biber Dimensions of Register Variation - A Cross-Linguistic Comparison (Hardcover, New)
Douglas Biber
R3,820 R3,223 Discovery Miles 32 230 Save R597 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Douglas Biber's new book extends and refines the research and methodology reported in his ground-breaking Variation Across Speech and Writing (1988), and adds for the first time a diachronic dimension. In it he gives a linguistic analysis of register in four widely differing languages: English, Nukulaelae Tuvaluan, Korean, and Somali. Striking similarities as well as differences emerge, allowing Biber to predict for the first time cross-linguistic universals of register variation.

Syllables In Tashlhiyt Berber And In Moroccan Arabic (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002): F. Dell, M.... Syllables In Tashlhiyt Berber And In Moroccan Arabic (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
F. Dell, M. Elmedlaoui
R4,045 Discovery Miles 40 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is intended primarily as an original contribution to the investi gation of the phonology of the two main languages spoken in Morocco. Its central topic is syllable structure. Our theoretical outlook is that of generative phonology. Most of the book deals with Tashlhiyt Berber. This language has a syllable structure with properties which are highly unusual, as seen from the vantage point of better-studied languages on which most theorizing about syllabification is based. On the one hand, complex consonant sequences are a common occurrence in the surface representations. On the other hand, syllable structure is very simple: only one distinctive feature bundle (phoneme) may occur in the onset, the nucleus or the coda. The way these two conflicting demands are reconciled is by allowing vowelless sylla bies . Any consonant may act as a syllable nucleus. When astring is syllabified, nuclear status is preferentially assigned to the segments with a higher degree of sonority than their neighbours. Consider for instance the expression below, which is a complete sentence meaning 'remove it (m) and eat it (m)': /kks=t t-ss-t=t/ [k. st. s . t:"] . k. k~t. t. s. . slt. The sentence must be pronounced voiceless throughout, as indicated by the IPA transcription between square brackets ; the syllabic parse given after the IPA transcription indicates that the sentence comprises four syllables (syllable nuclei are underlined). The differences between the dialects of Berber have to do primarily with the phonology and the lexicon.

Sound Symbolism (Hardcover, New): Leanne Hinton, Johanna Nichols, John J. Ohala Sound Symbolism (Hardcover, New)
Leanne Hinton, Johanna Nichols, John J. Ohala
R3,808 R3,211 Discovery Miles 32 110 Save R597 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sound symbolism is the study of the relationship between the sound of an utterance and its meaning. In this interdisciplinary collection of new studies, twenty-four leading scholars discuss the role of sound symbolism in a theory of language. They consider sound-symbolic processes in a wide range of languages from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America. Beginning with an evocative typology of sound-symbolic processes, they go on to examine not only the well-known areas of study, such as onomatopoeia and size-sound symbolism, but also less frequently discussed topics such as the sound-symbolic value of vocatives and of involuntary noises, and the marginal areas of "conventional sound symbolism", such as phonesthemes. The book concludes with a series of studies on the biological basis of sound symbolism, and draws comparisons with the communication systems of other species. This is a definitive work on the role of sound symbolism in a theory of language. The wide-ranging new research presented here reveals that sound symbolism plays a far more significant role in language than scholarship has hitherto recognized.

Principles of English Stress (Hardcover, New): Luigi Burzio Principles of English Stress (Hardcover, New)
Luigi Burzio
R4,589 R3,866 Discovery Miles 38 660 Save R723 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this provocative work, Luigi Burzio argues that many common assumptions within stress theory, and phonological theory more generally, are in fact rather arbitrary. He proposes radical departures from recent tradition. In Part I he analyzes stress in the underived English lexicon, arguing that the basic accentual groups or "feet" are not monosyllabic or bisyllabic, as often assumed, but rather bisyllabic or trisyllabic. This analysis brings significant simplifications to other recent theorizing, including the elimination of standard extrametrically and all rules destressing. In Part II Professor Burzio deals with morphologically complex words, and argues that various phenomena of stress presevation, including the apparent stress "neutrality" of a class of affixes, are all predictable reflexes of a single principle of Metrical Consistency. In addition to a superior account of stress, the proposed metrical theory yields a unitary account of a wide spectrum of vowel-length alternations, in an overall conception of phonology which is modular, like that of comtemporary syntax. The book makes a major theoretical contribution to the analysis of English word stress and to phonological theory.

Eberhard Stock, Eva-Maria Krech; Wieland Kranich
R1,655 Discovery Miles 16 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intonation - Analysis, Modelling and Technology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): A. Botinis Intonation - Analysis, Modelling and Technology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
A. Botinis
R4,157 Discovery Miles 41 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

ANTONIS BOTINIS 1. 1 Background This introduction provides essential information about the structure and the objects of study of this volume. Following the introduction, fourteen papers which represent current research on intonation are organised into five thematic sections: (I) Overview of Intonation, (II) Prominence and Focus, (III) Boundaries and Discourse, (IV) Intonation Modelling, and (V) Intonation Technology. Within the sections the papers are arranged thematically, although several papers which deal with various aspects of intonation and prosody are basically intersectional. As the title indicates, "Intonation: Analysis, Modelling and Technology" is a contribution to the study of prosody, with major emphasis on intonation. Intonation and tonal themes are thus the central object of the volume, although temporal and dynamic aspects are also taken into consideration by a good number of papers. Although tonal and prosodic distinctions have been dealt with throughout man's literate history with reference to the study of language, for example by classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, it is in recent decades that we have witnessed the most fertile growth in intonation studies, as with experimental phonetics and speech technology in general. As Rossi (this volume) points out, intonation research really began to blossom in the sixties with a multi fold increase in prosodic studies, reflected in contributions to the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS), and in the international literature."

Phonological Knowledge - Conceptual and Empirical Issues (Paperback, New): Noel Burton-Roberts, Philip Carr, Gerard Docherty Phonological Knowledge - Conceptual and Empirical Issues (Paperback, New)
Noel Burton-Roberts, Philip Carr, Gerard Docherty
R1,530 Discovery Miles 15 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume concerns the nature, status, and acquisition of phonological knowledge, and its place in, or relation to, the theory of language and other capacities of mind. The contributions are written by well-known linguists and phonologists and address a wide range of interrelated issues: for example, whether phonology is 'different' from the rest of language; the implications of sign language; the nature-convention debate; and the data and methods of phonology. Of interest to researchers in phonology, linguistics, and psychology, the volume will also appeal to postgraduates and advanced undergraduates in linguistics. In addition to the editors, the authors are Mary Beckman, Silvain Bromberger, Jennifer Fitzpatrick, Paul Foulkes, Mark Hale, Morris Hallé, John Harris, Harry van der Hulst, Robert Ladd, G. Lindsey, Scott Myers, Janet Pierrehumbert, Charles Reiss, Shelley Velleman, Marilyn Vihman, and Linda Wheeldon.

Laboratory phonology uses speech data to research questions about the abstract categorical structures of phonology. This collection of papers broadly addresses three such questions: What structures underlie the temporal coordination of articulatory gestures? What is the proper role of segments and features in phonological description? and What structures--hierarchical or otherwise--relate morphosyntax to prosody? In order to encourage the interdisciplinary understanding required for progress in this field, each of the three groups of papers is preceded by a tutorial paper (commissioned for this volume) on theories and findings presupposed by some or all of the papers in the group. In addition, most of the papers are followed by commentaries, written by noted researchers in phonetics and phonology, which serve to bring important theoretical and methodological issues into perspective. Most of the material collected here is based on papers presented at the Second Conference on Laboratory Phonology in Edinburgh, 1989. The volume is a sequel to Kingston and Beckman (eds.): Papers in Laboratory Phonology I also published by Cambridge University Press.

Change, Chance, and Optimality (Hardcover): April McMahon Change, Chance, and Optimality (Hardcover)
April McMahon
R1,909 Discovery Miles 19 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is about how languages change. It is also a devastating critique of Optimality Theory-the dominant theory in contemporary phonology and increasingly influential throughout linguistics. The author sets out its basis principles and shows it to be incapable of explaining either language change or variation. OT relies on the innateness of certain human language faculties and therefore needs to explain the origins of allegedly genetically-specified features. Professor McMahon considers the nature and evolution of the human language capacity, and reveals a profound mismatch between the predictions of evolutionary biology and the claims for innateness made in OT. She argues further that any convincing theory of linguistic change must take account of the roles of history and chance.

The Phonology of Hungarian (Hardcover): Peter Siptar, Miklos Toerkenczy The Phonology of Hungarian (Hardcover)
Peter Siptar, Miklos Toerkenczy
R2,944 Discovery Miles 29 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first comprehensive account of the phonology of Hungarian to have been published in English. Hungarian is a Uralic (Finno-Ugric) language. It is unlike other European languages, and atypical among the members of the Uralic family. The lexicon reflects the country's history, with the earliest layers of loanwords coming from Iranian, various Turkic and Slavonic languages, and German. The book is divided into three parts. Part I introduces the general features of the language and its major dialects. Part II examines its vowel and consonant systems, and its phonotactics (syllable structure constraints, transsyllabic constraints, and morpheme structure constraints). In Part III the authors describe the phonological processes that vowels, consonants, and syllables undergo and/or trigger. They provide a new analysis of vowel harmony, as well as discussions of palatalization, voice assimilation, and processes targetting nasals and liquids. The final chapters of the work are devoted to processes conditioned by syllable structure, and to surface phenomena. The book concludes with a full list of references and a comprehensive index. The authors have framed their discussions within a rule-based, non-linear framework to achieve optimum accessibility and concision. Their authoritative account of the sound-system of this unique language will interest phonologists and their advanced students throughout the world.

Hacking Cyberspace (Paperback): David J. Gunkel Hacking Cyberspace (Paperback)
David J. Gunkel
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In "Hacking Cyberspace" David J. Gunkel examines the metaphors applied to new technologies, and how those metaphors inform, shape, and drive the implementation of the technology in question. The author explores the metaphorical tropes that have been employed to describe and evaluate recent advances in computer technology, telecommunications systems, and interactive media. Taking the stance that no speech is value-neutral, Gunkel examines such metaphors as "the information superhighway" and "the electronic frontier" for their political and social content, and he develops a critical investigation that not only traces the metaphors' conceptual history, but explicates their implications and consequences for technological development. Through "Hacking Cyberspace," David J. Gunkel develops a sophisticated understanding of new technology that takes into account the effect of technoculture's own discursive techniques and maneuvers on the actual form of technological development.

The Phonology of Dutch (Paperback, New edition): Geert Booij The Phonology of Dutch (Paperback, New edition)
Geert Booij
R1,328 Discovery Miles 13 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this, the first comprehensive survey of the phonological system of Dutch, Geert Booij lays particular stress on the relation between morphology, syntax, and prosodic structure at both word- and sentence-level. His primary aim is to provide an overview of the system as a whole, based in part on a number of more detailed studies of particular aspects of Dutch phonology. As a reference work, the book directs the reader to the available literature. The book is not primarily intended as a contribution to phonological theory; however, it is couched in terms of present-day non-linear generative phonology, and the author's analyses are relevant for a number of current issues in phonological theory such as the principles of syllable structure, the interaction of phonology and morphology, underspecification, rule typology, the domain specification of phonological rules, cliticization, and the role of rhythm in word stress.

Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy - The Meaning of Democratic Education in Unsettling Times (Paperback, New ed): Dennis Carlson Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy - The Meaning of Democratic Education in Unsettling Times (Paperback, New ed)
Dennis Carlson
R1,767 Discovery Miles 17 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The essays in this volume explore the educational implications of unsettling shifts in contemporary culture associated with postmodernism. These shifts include the fragmentation of established power blocs, the emergence of a politics of identity, growing inequalities between the haves and the have-nots in a new global economy, and the rise in influence of popular culture in defining who we are. In the academy, postmodernism has been associated with the emergence of new theoretical perspectives that are unsettling the way we think about education. These shifts, the authors suggest, are deeply contradictory and may lead in divergent political directions--some of them quite dangerous. "Power/Knowledge/Pedagogy" examines these issues with regard to four broad domains of educational inquiry: state educational policy and curriculum reform, student identity formation, the curriculum as a text, and critical pedagogy. The book contributes to the dialogue on the forging of a new commonsense discourse on democratic educational renewal, attuned to the changing times in which we live.
